WhatagreatnighttheJulymeetingwaswiththeAuctionofthe lateJohnFoot’sbooksandmodels.Also,intheMainHall,Ken hadsetupafewtableswithJohn’stoolsandgaragebitsand pieces.Thesewerenotauctioned(wewouldhavebeenthereall night!),butinsteaditwastakewhatyouwantandpaywhatyou consideredafairvalue.Iknowalotofmembersgotsome bargains,theClubcoffersgotaboostandKenhadonelessthing toworryaboutinsortingJohn’sEstate.ManythanksKenforyour generositywithover$1300comingintoclubfundsandagreatnight’sentertainmentthrown in!

Well,winterhascertainlymadeitselfathome!Thecolder morningshaven'tslowedthingsdownthough-it'sbeenanother busymonthforourBranch,andthecalendaraheadisjustasfull. AugustkicksoffwiththeNationalAGM,beinghostedherein PalmerstonNorthatTheDistinctionCoachmanfrom14-16 August.It'safantasticopportunitytoshowcaseourBranch,and wehavebeenworkinghardbehindthescenestomakeita successfulweekend.

Beforewe'veevenhadachancetocatchourbreath,we'llbe gearingupforourannualDaffodilDayRallythefollowingweekend.Thisisalwaysan enjoyableevent,raisingmuch-neededfundsfortheCancerSocietywhileenjoyingthe camaraderieofourclubandsomegreatmotoring.

Then,afteraverybriefbreather,SeptemberarriveswithourannualBranchSwapMeetat Manfeild-anothermajoreventonourcalendarthatreliesonthesupportofourfantastic membersandvolunteers.

Duetocancellations,themonthlySundayrunwasdifferenttothe oneadvertised,armedwithafewadditionalinstructions,fourteen carssetofffromtheCoachHousetoretracethenighttrialrally routewhichencompassedbothtarsealandgravelroads.Witha bitofgravelthrownintothemix,itmakesforexcitingrallyingandweweren'tdisappointed. Attheheightofthewarthey werefittedtonearly2000privatecarsand500trucks.Thelimitedrangeofthegasproducer,the slowstoke-upbeforethecarcouldrun,theconstantneedtocleanclinkersfromthefirebox,and thesoot,smell,smokeandfireriskconfinedtheuseofthedevicetothebravest.

On1st June1950,after11yearsofrestriction,petrolsaleswerefinallyfreedfromcontrols. AccordingtothePrimeMinister,SidneyHolland,rationingofpetrolinNewZealandhadbeen maintainedintheyearsafterthewar“essentiallybecauseoftheneedtorestrictdollar expenditure.

TECHNICAL STUFF - ‘HOWOFTENYOU SHOULD GREASE WHEEL BEARINGS

Beforedivingintothe frequencywithwhichyou shouldgreasewheel bearings,weshouldnote thatnotallwheel bearingsneedtobe greased.Wheelbearing guidancepublishedina November1980Hot Rodarticlepointedout thatsomewheelbearings arelubricatedforlifeand sealedatthefactory.

Mostmodernautomobilesusesealedwheelbearingsthatneverneedtoberegreased.That's anadvantage.However,bythetimeitsoundslikethewheelbearingisgoingbad,you'llhave toreplaceit,andyoumayevenhavetoreplacemoreparts,includingthehubassembly.That said,ifyouhaveaclassiccar,boat,utilitytrailer,ortow-behindcamper,you'llmostlikelystill needtogreaseyourwheelbearingsperiodically.

Oddlyenough,the45-year-oldHotRodarticle'srecommendationforrepackingtheserviceable frontwheelbearingsofautomobileswithnewgrease"every12,000milesor12months"is stillaccurate.Lippert,aleadingmanufactureroftrailersusedforcampers,boats,livestock, andmore,recommendsrepackingbearingswithgreaseannuallyataminimumandmore oftenifyouusethetrailerfrequentlyorinharshconditions.Amsoil,asupplieroflubricants, agreeswithgreasingwheelbearingsannuallyasapartofroutinemaintenance.

THEBESTWAYTOGREASEWHEELBEARINGS

Thereare differentwaysto applygreaseto wheelbearings. Eachmethodhas alistofprosand conssurrounding theprocessesand efficacy.For example,thebest methodislabour intensive,while theeasiestway canleadtomore problems.Unlike

rubberbushingsthatneedgreaseappliedtotheoutersurface,wheelbearingsarebestserved bygreasepackedintotheirinternals.

Theeasiestmethod,forsomewheelbearings,istopumpadditionalgreaseintothehub throughthehollowspindleoranattachmentfittedwithagreasenipple.Greasenipplefittings thatapplygreasedirectlytowheelbearingsarecommononsomeboatandRVtrailers,either directlyfromthefactoryorasaftermarketadd-ons.It'sasystemcommonlyknownasa BearingBuddy(brandname)orwet-boltdesignthatdoesn'tevenrequireremovingthetire. Thedownsidestothistypeofapplicationarethatnewgreasemaynotreachtheinner bearing,oritmayoverpressurizethesealsandleakgreaseintothebrakeassembly.

Thebestwaytogreasewheelbearingsistorepackthembyhand.However,itrequires removingthetire,disassemblingthehub,andthoroughlycleaningthebearings,races,and hubassembly.Upsidestothisprocessincluderemovingalltheoldgreaseandany contaminatesandprovidinganopportunitytoinspectthebearingsandracesfordamageor wearbeforereassembly.

Originalequipment(OE)tyres-theonesfittedtoacarontheproductionline-areoften developedindirectconsultationwiththevehiclemanufacturer.

Iswappedhighway-biasedtyresforall-terrainsonmyPrado

Intheseinstances,thetyresareengineeredtosupportthecar'skeyperformancepriorities, whichtypicallymeansdry-weatherbraking,lowcabinnoiseandefficientrollingresistanceto aidfuel(orenergy)consumption.Tomeetthosetargets,OEtyresarecommonlyconstructed withashallowertreaddepththantheirretailequivalents,whichmeanstheywearoutfaster.

Replacementtyres,evenwhentheycarrythesamebrand,modelnameandsizecodeasthe factoryfitment,tendtobetunedtoadifferentbrief.Aftermarketversionsaregenerally engineeredforstrongerwet-weatherperformanceandalongerservicelife,ratherthanthe narrowersetofprioritiesthemanufacturerspecifiedfortheOEversion. Neitherversionisobjectivelysuperior-they’resimplybuiltfordifferentjobs.Butthe differencemattersifyou’reassumingalike-for-likeswap.
