Chairman’s Chat Hello again and welcome to the first month of Spring which has burst through with its typical changeable weather patterns. Conditions underfoot are quite damp which becomes challenging to us agrarian types who are battling with the onslaught of newborn lambs and calves. As I write it is persisting down again just in case we are tempted to take the gumboots off too soon. Daffodil Day has been and gone and thanks to Denis Knight and his helpers it went off well despite the lousy weather conditions of the day. This made for less vehicles than previous years but all participants donated generously and over $2,000 was raised for a very good cause. The tour to Lawrence was very scenic but would have been much more picturesque obviously on a nice day. However the sun came out to welcome us to the township and many a good yarn was exchanged. The branch held the monthly meeting this week with no major issues, we are still waiting for the builders to begin the toilet renovations but have been assured this will happen soon – watch this space. Also drawn to our attention was the fact that Gerry Kennedy and his lovely wife, Mary, recently celebrated their 58th year of wedded bliss. Congratulations to both of you and I’m sure Gerry will present Mary with a suitable medallion for her years of patience and understanding very soon. The branch is still short of a House Convenor, this is not a big job but one that ensures the smooth operation of our branch. It would be nice to see someone step forward to fill this position since I am sure you will agree we all need to have our turn to help keep things tracking. Rest assured there will be plenty of support from all our branch members when required. It also seems that our national body is running on empty, we all know costs are increasingly astronomical. After some careful consideration a proposal has been ignited to marginally increase our subs to continue such things as Beaded Wheels which I know we all enjoy reading but come at a cost. Club Captain’s Report I start this report by thanking all the members who inquired about my health with good wishes over the last three months. The pacemaker is in and I feel great. The rally year has started with the Daffodil Run to Lawrence, expertly organised by Denis & Marie Knight. It was unfortunate for Denis & Marie that the weather was shocking with snow & sleet around Gore and Lawrence. Fifty cars consisting of 30 club members plus 20 non-members braved the conditions to travel, via Raes Junction, to Lawrence. With raffles, donations & entries, $2200 was raised for the Cancer Society. A special thanks must go to Nathan Abernethy and his team from Regional Ford Gore for their support and help. As Club Captain this year, I was unable to present a winner for the Roudie Trophy for restoration. After discussion with several branch officers, it was decided that Allan Young’s restoration of his 1928 Model A Tourer be declared the winner. To this end I must thank David North for checking to find the criteria agreed by vote at the Dec 2016 meeting. (For “The best individual effort of restoration each year”. All types of restorations are to be considered, i.e. effort can include saving funds for paid restoration.) To finish off I was very happy to view photos of four of our hard-working members in the last Beaded Wheels: John & Katy Parish enjoying a motor rally, and Gerry Kennedy & Greg Elder having the honour of cutting the branch 60th Anniversary cake. These members deserve all the credit that’s available for the hard work they do for the Gore Vintage Car Club. Alan Ritchie

From the Editor’s Keyboard This month, I begin with an apology to those members who receive their copies by post. As The Wiper grew to 48 pages, I knew it was getting marginal for the maximum thickness for a single Kiwistamp. The last issue fell foul of this and the posted copies were held at NZ Post’s Christchurch Mail Centre until I had paid the excess postage. As a result, this month’s issue is slightly slimmer, at 44 pages. To do this, while including all the event notices I have been asked to include, I have had to cut the two regular “historical” items. What you do have are information about August’s Delegate meeting and the proposal to increase subscription rates, reports on Gore’s VCC Daffodil Day from Denis Knight and August’s Tuesday Ramble from Murray & Marilyn Proctor plus another of Julia Evans’ amusing accounts of holidaying with Star McDougall. There is also a notice for next March’s National North Island Easter Rally and full details of the Vero National South Island Easter Rally, based in Dunedin, so you have plenty of time to plan a trip, book accommodation, fettle a vehicle and be prepared to write a story for The Wiper! Subscription Increase Proposal

Delegate meeting/conference, August 2026 Branch Delegates met twice during the VCC AGM weekend - on the evening of Friday 14 and the afternoon of Saturday 15 August. The Friday meeting was described as an “informal gathering”, whereas the Saturday one was a Delegate meeting/conference under the new constitution. No Minutes were taken for either meeting, although the constitution states that Minutes shall be kept of every Delegate meeting/conference. Following questions and complaints from delegates and members, brief Minutes of the Saturday meeting were drawn up at some stage after the meeting and these were circulated on 10 September. A PowerPoint presentation of the VCC budget for 2026/27, showing a projected deficit of c.$86K, was presented at the informal meeting on Friday evening and this, and potential remedies, were discussed. Suggestions included increasing subscriptions, four rather than six issues of Beaded Wheels each year and not holding the March Delegate meeting/conference (despite the constitution specifying two meetings per year). A copy of the PowerPoint presentation was circulated in early September. A number of delegates were unhappy that the budget was not pre-circulated or available as hardcopy at the meeting, so it could be studied and considered properly. There is also concern that the July accounts and PowerPoint figures differ, the lack of proper consideration of options other than increasing subscriptions and a perception that discussion was shut down prematurely. 13
As a result, a number of branches have indicated that they intend to vote against the proposal to increase subscriptions and are calling for more scrutiny of the figures and of other options. •
The Motion will be discussed and voted on at the 13 October Gore Branch meeting.

The National Committee will vote on the Motion at its in-person meeting on 17 October, and our Regional Representative must be notified of how the branch wishes to vote on or before Thursday 15 October.

N.B. Regional Representatives sat with their respective Branch Delegates at the Saturday meeting to provide feedback on the budget options and to discuss how they would communicate on a regular basis. The Lower South Island Regional Representative, Glenys McKenzie, was overseas and did not attend the AGM weekend. This means that Glenys has not been able to provide her own feedback about the two meetings to “her” branches (Gore, Southland, South Otago, Otago and Central Otago). The Gore Branch did not elect a Branch Delegate at its AGM this year. Consequently, it was not represented at either of the two meetings and has no direct knowledge of the proceedings. However, I believe that the other branches in the Region did send Representatives. The above notes are based on information from branch newsletters, emails from branch delegates and the documents circulated by the National Office. At our September meeting, I incorrectly said that the Motion to increase subscriptions was passed at the Delegate meeting, it was actually proposed and passed at the National Committee meeting after the Delegate meeting. 2026 Daffodil Day Run Report
Well, what you can say about that!! What a let-down with the weather after such a lovely week of sunny hot weather prior. I woke up Sunday 23rd to rain, hail, gale force winds and even a bit of thunder and lightning - just bloody marvellous. Anyway, the show must go on.

I did not bother unpacking the new gazebo I purchased on Saturday because I thought it may be going to be a bit wet. I reckoned if I did take it, there was a good chance it would probably get to Lawrence before we did. Got down to the Showgrounds by 10.00 am to set up, a huge thanks to Ken Youngson for arranging some shelter in the sheep pens. We tried and failed to get in to the covered shed but at least we were out of the rain. By 10.40 am cars began steadily arriving, continuing until 1.00 pm. Thanks to David North for staying with me until the end and helping with the packing up.

I went home to drop off gear, get some dry clothes and a warm drink. I then headed away to catch up with everyone at Lawrence, sell some raffles and thank the shop owners for their support and have a bite for lunch. As with the rest of the day that did not really go to plan either. I had to turn back as I reckon I got a bit of a chill earlier, so for safety and health reasons I turned back and went and helped Marie at work for the afternoon instead. I did make a few calls to let people know where I was. Believe it or not I actually got half my Wiper report done before all the cars were even back from the Run. (David will be impressed!) 16
It was nice to have Ainsley Dermody there from the Cancer Society and thanks to Nancy Stronach for the beautiful Narcissus cyclamineus supplied for sale. As with the raffles, due to a bit of a shortage of helpers and not going on the Run I was unable to sell many. However, thanks to the very generous donations from our VCC members and members of the public, including Nathan Abernethy from Regional Ford Gore we were still able to raise more funds than last year. This makes me very proud to be part of such a great club thanks to you all. 17

A good example of resilience is Gore VCC member, Alister Graeve, who came from Invercargill in his Daimler 250 V8, his windscreen wipers gave up but he kept going anyway. A great effort. Numbers for the day were 30 VCC members’ vehicles, 20 private vehicles and approx. 130 people in attendance. We also collected a total of $2,200.00. Considering the day from hell we did OK. PS. Guess what - Monday was a beautiful sunny day. Invercargill postponed their run for a week and Dunedin ran theirs the same day as us and got 70 vehicles. Tuesday Ramble August 2026 The morning was a bit cold, overcast with a breeze. 10.30am and seven clubeligible and two modern vehicles met at the Gore branch carpark before heading off to Mossburn at 11.00am. There was a fairly strong westerly wind, and it did cause our car to wander a wee bit as we came out from behind trees, hedges etc. Approximately 12.00 we arrived in Mossburn meeting up with another four members, two club-eligible and two modern.

It’s still cool, so, inside the pub we go to be warmed up by a nice woodburning fire and some with a pre-meal drink. It was quite nice to just sit around and have a catch up with fellow Ramblers before going through to the dining room and to then getting down to the serious business of deciding what to select from the menu. It all looks pretty good. Steamed gurnard for me and very nice it was, Marilyn’s choice was the fillet chicken burger.
After lunch, we again sat and talked before paying for the meal, leaving the hotel at around 2.30pm and headed for home with the wind now behind us, which made driving a lot easier. A stop was called for in Lumsden where we had a look around the St John’s charity shop along with a couple of other Ramblers before moving next door to buy ourselves an ice-cream. We then headed for home arriving in Gore at about 4.00pm. Being winter we didn’t visit any display, we had a nice day out, nice drive, great company and Mossburn again put on a very good meal. Perhaps they were in a hurry to buy something at the shops.
Gerry’s Jokes My brother took going to jail really badly. He refused food and drink, he spat and swore at anyone who came near him and started throwing things everywhere! After that we never played Monopoly again. 31

What We Did On Our Holidays Another Holiday with Star by Julia Evans We left Auckland for Canada on Wednesday 2nd July 2026, arriving in Calgary late afternoon. On the Friday morning we watched the Stampede participants parade through the streets.
We then took a train to the Stampede grounds where we queued with crowds to gain entry. It was FREE the first day until midday and after going through security we were in the grounds. So much to see, a large fun fair, food stalls with huge portions of food!! We walked through the agricultural area and were asked if we were farming, which I answered “Yes”. We were then taken to the International area, given a drink and refreshments and a Pass to enter this area for the rest of our time at the Show. 33
Most people wore cowboy boots and hats. Star bought a cowboy hat, he looked good and blended in well. We had three more days there…..chuck wagon racing, rodeo etc. On the last evening we took the train further into Calgary for a meal. So many shops to look around. I went into one shop “just looking” and Star had disappeared. I walked up and down this long street, crowded with people and outside eateries. It was getting dusk so I took the train back to our hotel. Star was back there! He’d got fed up waiting and walked back. It was a long way. He didn’t have his phone on him so I hadn’t been able to contact him!!
We then started our coach tour Banff……cable car, beautiful scenery and very warm. Lake Louise, Jasper, Athabasca Glacier. It was cold on the glacier but Star was wearing shorts. When they asked if anyone wanted to taste the water ‘for eternal youth’ I suggested Star volunteer! The ice was sharp and he cut his knees. They were bleeding and the Tour Guide was very concerned, but all was well. Our tour took us to Vancouver Island. The beautiful Butchart Gardens, hot and sunny. Then a guided tour through Victoria. A piper piped us into our hotel. The next day Star and I took the open-top bus, saw deer walking around the houses and had lunch at the Fisherman’s Wharf where some of the houses float on the water. We returned by ferry to Vancouver and started our cruise along the Inside Passage on Wednesday 15th July. The first day was a scenic cruise. We arrived in Juneau, Alaska. We explored the town, visited the husky dogs and had a sleigh ride, pulled by 16 of them! 34
The next day we embarked in Skagway. A train trip for three hours, lunch at the Red Onion Saloon bar, where we could have had a Brothel tour for $20 but Star decided it was too expensive!! We went to a local stage show where the Can-Can was danced! We then had a day cruising through the Glacier Park. We could see icebergs, glaciers etc. Beautiful scenery. Star went into the hot pool while I had a massage. He was waiting for me when I finished. He was still in his bath robe and swimming trunks. He had lost the room key! He returned to the hot pool to search for it. He asked a young girl wearing goggles if she could look at the bottom of the pool. She retrieved it for him! Next stop Ketchikan. Walked around town. Very warm so Star took our coats and purchases back to the boat which was moored nearby, before we went to Saxman to watch Alaskan Native dances etc. When we arrived back at the boat Star could not find his phone and thought he must have left it in the container for phones etc. when we were going through security. We informed the Help Desk on numerous occasions. Nothing found.
The next day we set sail for Vancouver. I decided to treat Star to a head and beard wash and massage. He was not a happy man as he still could not locate his phone. I thought it would help to relax him. He looked much improved afterwards! 35
On Wednesday 22nd July we embarked. We then took a very short flight (15 minutes) to Nanaimo where my cousin lives. I had a phone call in the evening from Gore Hospital!! I am named as a contact for Star. He had apparently left clothing in the hospital after his admission two weeks before our holiday to Canada! I told them that he had lost his phone. They informed us that they had spoken to a clothing shop in Alaska. Star had obviously left it there after shopping. We did contact them, but the phone was unable to be returned due to the battery which cannot be removed. Knowing the phone was NOT on the boat but in Alaska…. We had three lovely days in the Nanaimo area of Vancouver Island. On arriving back in Auckland on Monday 27th July 6.30am, breakfast in the Koru Lounge with the Right Honourable Winston Peters, “Crusher” Collins, the PM, Chris Luxon, and other MPs before our homeward flight to Invercargill! What (was) In My Garage 1960 Borgward Hansa by Rod McKay My first car was a 1960 Borgward Hansa, made in Bremen, Germany. The model was previously known as the Goliath. It had a 40hp water-cooled, flat four (boxer) engine of 1100cc. Subaru later adopted the same engine format, said by some to have been copied from the Borgward. The car was very advanced for its time, being front-wheel drive and equipped with very light rack & pinion steering and an all-synchromesh gearbox but with only 6-volt electrics. The engine, clutch and gearbox were all under the bonnet and there was no firewall bulge under the dash, making for lots of room. Front suspension was a transverse leaf spring bolted to the top of the engine, while the rear was a simple axle mounted on leaf springs. Top speed was around 80mph, although torque steer could become a problem. My car had a 2-door body and was coloured red.
