CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Spring is almost in the air, although it would be easy to think it's already arrived with the warmer weather and the abundance of daffodils on display at the Daffodil Day run. Thanks to everyone involved in organising and helping out with the event, with another great turnout of a huge range of vehicles and as usual some excellent one make club displays. Particular thanks to Colin Hey for once again overseeing things, and Michelle Little for the very generous donation of the raffle prizes. With the AGM done for another year and the calendar of events sorted it's time to look forward to getting out and enjoying the summer, thanks to those members who took the time to attend the AGM and offer their thoughts. There is still a vacancy for a committee member if there is someone willing to contribute some time to help out with the running of the branch, so if that sounds like you please get in touch. Looking forward to seeing you out and about. Neil Shaskey Branch Chairman.

Secretary REPORT It's been a busy old time in the Secretary's seat over the last couple of months, evident perhaps by the missing July update from me. So here is my bumper July and August update combined. My focus in July was largely on getting ready for our AGM and making sure all the moving parts were lined up and ready to go. As mentioned at the AGM, a huge thank you to those "special people" who lent a hand coordinating meeting notices, gathering reports, assisting with AGM arrangements, and generally guiding me through preparing for and presenting my first AGM as Secretary. July was certainly a busy month, with correspondence covering member enquiries, club matters, VIC/DOMAS administration, the Branch AGM, and preparation for the National AGM in Palmerston North. Moving into August, it became the month of firsts for me when it came to meetings! Canterbury Branch AGM - 9 August First up was our Canterbury Branch AGM. It just goes to show that preparation pays off. Thanks again to everyone who helped on the day, especially after I managed to injure my writing-hand thumb. Thankfully, with a little teamwork from Neil, Brodie and Wayne, we got the minutes completed without too much drama. No further nominations for committee positions were received, so all current committee members were re-elected for another term. We are, however, still looking for two additional committee members and a Convenor for the Commercial Section following Michael's decision to step down. A huge thank you to Michael for all his time and effort in the role. I would encourage anyone considering becoming more involved to step forward and join us.

You won't be on your own, there is plenty of support available, and many hands certainly make light work. Congratulations to everyone continuing in their roles, and a warm welcome to Michael H, who takes over from Leigh as Branch Awards Co-ordinator. Congratulations also to all our trophy winners. Special recognition goes to Leigh, who received the Cutler Park Special Events Trophy in acknowledgement of her generosity and 15 years of dedicated service as our Branch Awards Co-ordinator. And, much to my surprise, I was presented with the Secretary Rose Bowl on behalf of Marilyn McKinley in recognition of the often-unseen work undertaken by the club secretary. While it feels a little undeserved given my relatively short time in the role, I was genuinely humbled and very grateful to receive it. Thank you.

National AGM - Palmerston North, 15-16 August Next came another first, attending the National AGM in Palmerston North, where Katryna attended as delegate and I tagged along as an observer. Katryna has prepared a comprehensive report that will be shared with the committee at our next meeting, so I'll stick to some of the highlights.

From the moment we landed we were made to feel incredibly welcome, even being chauffeured from the airport in a vintage vehicle to our accommodation and venue. We collected our "racing packs" (otherwise known as information packs!), met delegates from around the country over refreshments, squeezed in a little sightseeing and outfit shopping, then headed back for dinner and the Delegates' Meeting. Saturday began with a warm welcome from Palmerston North Mayor Grant Smith before we settled into the National AGM. The meeting ran with remarkable precision and covered a wide range of topics including the national financial position, constitutional compliance, branch accounts, member experiences with Vero Insurance, and the establishment of the new Regional Representative structure and associated responsibilities. A Life Membership was also awarded to Kevin Clarkson. Congratulations again, Kevin, on a well-deserved and fitting recognition of your contribution to the club. I hope by the time you got home Kevin, the shock has subsided some what for you. To conclude the formal proceedings, George presented Karren Smylie with the Presidential Award for her incredible work leading the Daffodil Rally for Cancer Appeal in partnership with the Cancer Society and Ford New Zealand. Karren then shared her own cancer journey, offering an inspiring yet confronting reminder of why this initiative matters so much. Her presentation reinforced the importance of continuing to support this worthy cause. This year the goal is to raise more than $300,000 nationwide. What an incredible achievement that would be if VCC members across New Zealand once again get in behind the rally. The afternoon saw the newly appointed Regional Representatives meeting with their branch groups. Canterbury forms part of the Upper South Island Group, alongside Marlborough, Nelson, West Coast and Banks Peninsula, with Andy Fox appointed as our Re10

gional Representative. The group agreed that Andy will visit each branch in person once a year, either at a club run or AGM. Each branch will have a single designated contact person responsible for communication and feedback. Updates will alternate between bi-monthly email updates and Zoom meetings, with the first Zoom call planned for September. The Saturday evening function was another highlight. Despite my assumption that the theme was the 1920s, actually it was the 1940s! A great meal, cake, and live twopiece band playing 1940s classics made for a thoroughly enjoyable night. On Sunday morning we were once again chauffeured in vintage vehicles, this time to the Manawatu Branch clubrooms. What a wonderful facility, and one that is also available for community functions. A delicious morning tea awaited us, and we were made to feel exceptionally welcome. A huge thank you to Glyn, Cathy and the entire Manawatu Branch team for their outstanding hospitality throughout the weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity. I met wonderful branch members from all corners of the country, learnt a great deal about the workings of National Office, swapped stories with fellow secretaries, and discovered that agreeing to attend every rally you're invited to may not be the wisest strategy! Thank you for the opportunity to attend, learn, network and represent Canterbury.

Every dollar raised, every kilometre driven, and every act of support goes a long way toward helping those facing a cancer diagnosis, as well as the families and friends who support them every step of the way. Don’t forget to get your entries in NOW for Women’s and Young Driver Rally (6 September). We want to see as many young drivers and women as we can at this event! CLUB CAPTAINS Catherine, our Branch Secretary, and I attended the National AGM and Delegate Meeting on behalf of the branch. It was a wonderful opportunity to introduce Catherine to fellow secretaries from around the country, and she was warmly welcomed.

The discussion and presentations were informative and provided valuable insights. We have prepared a report summarising the key matters covered and the benefits gained from attending. We were picked up and dropped back to the airport in Vintage Cars and the Saturday evening was dressed up in 1920s. Something Interesting this month…….

If your key fob won't unlock your car from a distance, hold it up to your chin. Your skull acts as a temporary signal amplifier. Cruise control was invented in 1948 by Ralph Teetor, a mechanical engineer who had been blind since the age of five! This Thursday, I will be meeting with the Banks Peninsula Branch. The objective is to maintain the unique identity of each branch while exploring opportunities to collaborate, share ideas, and work together more effectively. Andy Fox will also be attending to help strengthen connections between our branches and encourage the sharing of knowledge, experiences and best practices. Henry is quietly working on our Show Weekend Run. Have decided to have a Sunday run If there is enough interest getting back to Christchurch early evening or stay an extra night

In Greymouth. Let me know your thoughts. The Women and Young Drivers is next month. Please encourage family members or take a grandchild to get experience in driving an older car so our history is not lost! Don’t forget the Motorcycle Trial is on the 20th September following OCBC - it is always a great watch if you don’t participate. VETERAN REPORT We finally managed to get out and do our July Random Run just before the close of the month, which for a change of scenery was held on the north side of the Waimakariri. Meeting in South Eyre Road not far from Tram Road at 11.00am, we welcomed first-time participant Bill Woodhouse in his lovely dark Blue Model T Tourer and also Adrian Whiteman with his Bullnose Morris Tourer, along with 6 more of our regular veterans, this time also including Gavin Hunt from Ashburton in his 1903 Daraqu, and Allan Familton & Lesley Colsell who had swapped out the De Dion for the Stanley Steamer for this outing. Our first destination was only about 3km away in Ohoka, with a visit to Kelvin Finlay’s shed to see progress on the several cars that are being rebuilt in his large workshop. There had been significant progress made since my last visit six months ago on the Mors belonging to John Lyn, and also Kelvin’s Matallurgique and the Kaiser, which are both now being built up mechanically on the finished chassis. To show the benefits of using technology to assist restoration work, Kelvin showed us a prototype oil reservoir and pump assembly for the Kaiser engine which had just been made. It was drawn up after 3D scanning the area where it goes after all the external fittings were put in place. The scan had picked up all the attachment points and exact locations of the external oil pipes, together with the available space required to shape the reservoir so it would fit properly, and then it was then drawn up then and printed full size in a 3D printer. This hugely facilitates casting or fabricating the unit in its finished form, providing full confidence that it will fit exactly and work when made up. After about 45 minutes at Kelvin’s we headed into Kaiapoi, where we stopped and had a very nice lunch at the ‘Paris for the Weekend’ café, next to the river, sitting out on the deck in the sun. An hour or so later we were back in/on the cars, and headed out to Kairaki, where we stopped in the car park next to the Waimakariri River and enjoyed a fruit ice-cream from the ‘Lady in the Bus’

there. By about 2.30pm it was still sunny, but starting to cool down quite a bit, so we headed back to our start point in South Eyre Road to wrap up the day. Another very good outing! Our July coffee morning went ahead as usual at Kirwee on the second Tuesday of the month, but we have delayed deciding on the day for the August Random Run while we wait for the Spring weather to settle down a bit. Keep your eye on the Veteran Facebook page for an announcement once the day is chosen – probably during the week of 3rd to 7th August. This time we will be starting in Tai Tapu and probably heading to Greenpark and Motukarara using the many sealed back-roads in that area.

Coming Veteran Events

Saturday 5th September – Annual Veteran Car Club Garage Raid. Come and see a few projects on the go, meet the people doing them, and the sheds that house them. Meet at the Pedal Pusher Café & Restaurant, 55 Farringdon Boulevard, Rolleston, at 9.30am. We’ll have a coffee and then head off to the first destination. At the last location we visit there will be a simple BBQ lunch, gold coin donation please. Tuesday 8th September - Veteran Coffee Morning at Thirsty Acres from 11.00am. All welcome. The September Random Run will be planned there – keep an eye on the Veteran Facebook Page for details. Saturday 26th September – Veteran Car Club 60th Anniversary Rally. A special run to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Veteran Car Club. Meet for the run in the Sheffield Hall car park, Railway Terrace, Sheffield (on the other side of the Railway Line from Sheffield Pie Shop), at 10am. Trailer parking is available in the Sheffield Domain. You can grab a coffee and something for lunch at the Sheffield Pie Shop, and we will leave on the run to at 10.30am sharp for Terrace Station in Hororata where both the 40th and 50th Anniversaries were held. Please bring a donation for the visit. Looking and Booking ahead: 24th & 25th October (Labour Weekend) – South Canterbury Branch Veteran and Commercial Rally. Based in Timaru, this 19

Our August OCBC was the first wet and cold one for this year, so there was no hesitation to open up the hall doors and put SueAnne and Deb and the coffee van inside and turn the heaters on. We are very lucky we can do that, as we can be sure that there is still the opportunity to catch up on OCBC day despite what the weather is doing outside. Towards 11am it did brighten up a bit outside, so a few of the hardier souls spent a bit of time out there too. Sunday 20th September is the next opportunity to catch up at OCBC, and this is also the day that the Motorcycle Section will be having their Trials Event in the club grounds, so some good spectator opportunities will be on offer. See the Motorcycle Report for more information. Remember you can bring any vehicle out to OCBC, especially if it’s a bit special to you. Invite your mates, and come and enjoy a coffee with fellow enthusiasts. 20

During the month as I was getting the Daffodil Day Rally together, I couldn’t help but think that the thing that gives me the MOST STRESS (Grrrr) when organising a big event for the Club is finding enough helpers for the event. As organisers (and yes, there are many of us in our Branch) we simply cannot make an event happen properly without enough help. Fortunately, we have a very willing band of helpers who volunteer for Daffodil Day year after year, so it’s not too much of a problem, but we need SO MANY for Swap Meet, that despite our loyal regulars once again stepping up, we always struggle to get enough to carry out all the necessary jobs to make Swap Meet happen. Most of the team on the Swap Meet Committee are retired and can find time to do what they personally need to do, but we still need help, and lots of it. Swap Meet won’t run itself unless of course we just throw the gates wide open and let everyone in for free, which means we lose money, and a lot of it. Similarly, if we don’t have marshals looking after security, car parking, setting up and then packing up afterwards, total chaos will prevail. Last year and again this year, in addition to building up rosters at our Noggins (and there are only the September and October ones left now), we now also give all members the opportunity to volunteer to help online, by sending out an email to everyone. Please, please, please, do your bit and help out. We are a Club, and the reason we have a Club, is to help each other collectively to make things happen and one of those things is to fundraise to keep our organisation going. If you haven’t already done so, please look for the email again from Bronwyn McKinlay (search for ‘swap meet rosters’), and book your time to help out. All we need is an hour or so, and there is nothing hard about what we need people to do. If you’d prefer not to do it online, just fill out a spot at Noggin, or simply pick up the phone and give me or Katryna Shaw a call – we will slot a 21

time in for you. Other than that, things are progressing, and the date is getting closer. Please don’t cause me or our hard-working Swap Meet Committee to be stressed out as the time gets closer. We don’t need or want that at all! We want to look forward to Swap Meet, not worry about it night and day. Cheers Colin

Daffodil Rally 2026

After lots of planning and preparation for the day, Sunday the 23rd of August duly arrived and it was time to get organised for the Daffodil Rally. I woke to the sound of heavy rain on the roof at home, exactly as forecasted when I had last checked the weather forecast. I immediately hoped the second part of that forecast was correct, saying clearing by morning, and then a fine day with NW winds. As daybreak came, the rain did indeed stop, so time to head off to Cutler Park and finish off preparations for the secondbusiest event held there every year, surpassed only by Swap Meet about 6 weeks later. I had spent about 3 hours the day before sorting out areas requested by some of the one-make clubs attending to help them try and keep their members cars together, so all that was left to do now was put up some ‘Event’ signs on either side of McLeans Island Road just a few hundred metres away from the gates we were using, shift some tables outside for the raffle tickets and various trophies, and then checking in with the Avonhead Rotary Team who arrived to run the BBQ lunch, and with Philip Chapman and his band who began setting up their sound system and instruments on the balcony in front of the main door into the hall. By then the first cars were starting to arrive, these ones probably coming straight from home to Cutler Park, rather than one of the five official start locations around Christchurch. The marshals looking after the gates were dispatched and collection of the donations began. The cars arrived steadily up until about 11am, by 22

which time first of the cars that had completed the rally routes around town began arriving, and from then on the collectors and parking marshals got particularly busy. The queue on the road briefly extended towards the stop bank by the Gun Club, but by 12pm the majority of people had arrived with the cars stacked in every available space around the clubrooms, and then beyond the hedges outside of the main area. Without counting, it was hard to estimate how many cars we had, but it was probably in the region of about 700, plus about 15 motorcycles as well. The two coffee carts stayed busy the whole time, and the Avonhead Rotary Club BBQ was dispensing sausages and burgers as fast as they could possibly make them, and Henry and Michelle Little were doing a great job selling raffle tickets and daffodils to the many people wanting them. People were milling around everywhere, and many were simply relaxing in a sunny spot out of the very cool wind and enjoying their lunch with friends and family. It was great seeing so many car clubs supporting the event, some of which managed to group their cars together in an allocated area. The Canterbury Mustang Owners Club especially made a big effort to capture every Ford Mustang that came in the two gates, and must have had at least 40 cars present by the time everyone arrived. They had certainly taken on board the fact the Ford NZ were sponsoring the event, and put on a great display to support the brand and at the same time promote their club. At 1.30pm we had a brief prize giving ceremony, which also provided the opportunity to draw the raffle prizes, and to thank everyone for turning up and donating money to the Daffodil Day appeal and the Cancer Society. We were privileged to have Nichola Coomb, the National CEO for the Cancer Society, and Chris Aylish who is the Fundraising Leader for the Canterbury Branch, both present on the day. Nichola gave a short talk about the importance of this National VCC event to the Society, and explained briefly outlined how the funds will be used. Also present were Kaaren Smylie the National VCC coordinator for the event, and Garry Jackson (Chairman of the NZ Federation of Motoring Clubs) who is also a keen Ford Mustang owner and was instrumental in getting Ford NZ involved throughout the country as well. The following day it was my privilege to deliver just over $10,000 to the Christchurch office of the Cancer Society on behalf of eve23

ryone who attended. A special thanks to everyone in our Branch who helped out with the event, whether collecting donations, parking cars or helping organise the many bits and pieces that make up the event. A great effort, and a great example of how the VCC can work in the community, and have fun doing it as well. Also a special thanks to the Avonhead Rotary crew, Phil Chapman and the amazing musicians he assembled to make up the band (which incidentally included Allan Barron, one of NZ’s leading Country and Western singers), Mag & Turbo Christchurch, and to the teams at Avon City Ford and Team Hutchison Ford who looked after a lot of the promotion and advertising for the event. VOG LOG August 11th started off with a thick pea souper fog in Halswell but promised to be a fine but cooler day. Thanks goodness for that as this was the day the VOG boys were back on the Roads again after our winter hibernation although we did have a couple of succesful lunches during this time off with an excellent turnout in both June and July. The ride on the 11th was organised by VCC member John Thomson a Model T enthusiast but also known to drive many of his collection of other vehcles. John’s property in Sawyers Arms Road was the start off point for the ride and headed out around the Harewood area to include a History lesson. You might ask why is the writer showing a photo of a large tree with this article? Well you should recognise this tree as it stands proudly near the corner of Harewood Road and the round about of Johns Rd motorway and the only reason it is still standing and hasn’t been cut down to make way for “progress” is due to the good work of the late Jenny Heald wife of Colin Heald both of VCC fame. Jenny was known in the day as the “Mayoress of Harewood” and when the Council of the day wanted to cut this tree down Jenny had very strong views on the matter and residing in nearby Whitchurch Place said NO it is a very important tree of this area and no way is it to be removed. She apparently even went to the effort of finding a tree in another area with a “Heritage Plaque” attached to it and went out in the still of the night and removed this plaque and then attached this to “her protected tree” The workers arrived the following morning with chainsaws in hand ready for the task of the “big chop” but were confronted by Jenny all fired up and ready to tackle them “whoa!!” says she what do you think you’re doing “This Tree is coming down” said the contractors. NO it isn’t said Jenny this is a “Heritage Tree” and has a tag attached to prove it. And guess what this action of Jenny’s worked and the tree stands there to this day. “Bless you Jenny” your fame lives on. History lesson completed we headed off on a ride along some busy roads in the Harewood district and eventually out through to 26

the Main North road via some of the newer housing areas of Bishopdale, Casebrook and Regents Park. Wow all these areas are now in full swing of development. As a Velosolex rider you have plenty of time to safely view the landscape as you pass by at a sedate speed. John as a safety concious leader advised us to ride single file along the way and just as well he did – it was quite “hair raising” on some of the roads with trucks, trucks, trucks passing you by and probably with our minute size hardly even saw us. But we all scraped through safely and made it to the Papanui Club for an enjoyable lunch and comradeship. By the way don’t order a “seniors roast” when you go to the Papanui unless there are two of you. 9-90s Many Thanks to the 29 hardy car loads of people who turned out for Bruce’s August 9-90s outing on a cold damp day. Unfortunately the beautiful scenery which came into view as we crested the Evans Pass road was enveloped in a mist which at least did have it’s own attraction. We toured around the bays and ended up in Diamond harbour where we had a choice of staying on the tarseal and negotiating a tight right hand turn to travel up the hill or turning right to travel a short section of shingle / dirt (mud) road to come back down the hill to Peter’s place. It was all worth while as we crowded into Peter’s driveway to view his collection which included a one wheel motorbike! Which he has ridden from Lyttelton to Governors Bay and Teddington to Gebbies pass on the “Sid’s run”. Several other unusual bikes, some beautifully restored older motorcycle engines and lots of unusual parts of interesting items waiting to be restored. One of which is a little V twin engine made to power spotlights used to light up German airships sent to bomb London during the Blitz so they could be shot down. The crowning item for me is the beautiful AVANZO. A car originally built by Brent Rollinson as a race car. This car has an Alfa Romeo two litre twin cam engine in the front driving an alfetta transaxel and rear suspension, the chassis is designed by Martin Webster and built by Brent to very exacting standards. The body is a Buckler which has been extensively modified to accentuate the Ferrari appearance The car was raced successfully at Pukekohe and other meetings before being retired. AVANZO is Italian for “a collection of spare parts” Since then Peter has acquired the car and worked his magic on it turning it from a retired older style race car into a beautiful road going fully certified piece of New Zealand motoring history. Another piece of New Zealand History one of you may be able to 29

help Peter find the story of, and which he intends to restore is a four cylinder 1000 cc two stroke engine with stepped pistons he believes to be from around 1910-1920s and probably used to power a launch used on one of the southern lakes to transport tourists. If you do have any idea of the make or history of this engine (see photo) Peter would love to hear from you. petejones@xtra.co.nz. After viewing Peter’s treasures we carried on to Purau with the expectation of a lovely picnic lunch in the sun by the sea... Ha Ha! The cold damp wind caused some hardy souls to stay, sheltering behind shrubs and cars, some went back to Diamond Harbour seeking better shelter and some just went home. A sad end to what has been a very interesting and enjoyable day. Thanks to Bruce for his contacts and organisation. Next Month Ray & Linda Maginness are organising the run, meeting at the sports ground car park in Dunsandel beside the railway line ready to start at 9.55am. We will have a shortish run to a small collection but with an item we don’t see in collections very often. The owner has a wonderful garden and shelter for our picnic if the weather is bad. Commercial Report Greetings all, Well, we’re nearly done with the official Winter of 2026. Looking forward to spring now. There haven’t been too many weekends where it’s too cold to be in the garage which has been great. The A30 has the engine back in and by the time this is article published I’m hoping it might be running again. Currently the engine looking highly polished and painted but it’s waiting for a few more bits and pieces before I can start it up again. I worked out it’s done 4500 miles in the past 34 years so I’m hoping with the new mechanical upgrades we can cover a few more miles in the future without fear it’s going to self-destruct!

Prepped for painting! Coming events – Women and Young driver is on Sunday 6th September and the Annual Vintage Rally on Sept 27th. You can bring your commercial on these rallies if they fit the criteria or another vehicle if you have one. Let’s be honest – how many of our members have just the one vehicle!? If you are thinking about the Show weekend tour it might pay to book your accommodation now. This year it is off to Greymouth. Over one pass and home via the other. Should be a great weekend. Past Events - we had the Around town rally on 02nd August. It was a chilly start and finished up for Fish and Chips at Cutler Park. As the Austin is out of commission, I only had the Lagonda at home, so it was top-down motoring in winter which is a first for me – I normally leave it tucked up in the garage over winter and take the 32

Daimler with its heater! Thanks Brodie and helpers for organizing such a fun event. These 12-month WOF’s make a big difference. In the past I might choose not to WOF the car in Winter but now with it being 12 months we can get our cars out and use it where we might choose not to if it meant getting a WOF for it. Daffodil day was on the 23rd of August. Another great event and we were super lucky with the weather. We took the Lagonda again – it’s first daffodil run. Starting in Rangiora. The rain hammered down during the night before, but we woke to a sunny day. I held my cap on most of the time while driving but the second I let go of it, a side gust whipped it off and I had to stop and retrieve it! I’ll stick a pin through my head next time. Thanks to Colin Hey and his band of merry helpers who made the day a great success. The August Commercial Noggin was on Wednesday 19th August and was at the Papanui Club in Sawers Arms Road. A few of the regular members turned up and had a social chat over a drink. The September Commercial Noggin is to be held at Tony Brown’s place. 17 Cam Road, Kaiapoi on Wednesday 16th September from 7pm. Thanks Tony for offering to host the group. This is probably my last report in my official capacity as Commercial Convenor. I have taken a new role looking after the Awards ceremony after Leigh Craythorne announced her desire to step down after many years of dedicated service. Marques have been shelved in the main room alphabetically to make them more accessible, books from England, America, Australia etc have been gathered and shelved, and sections on veteran, vintage, autobiographical/biographical, general interest, sports and speed etc etc continue to grow as new donations are catalogued. During our cataloguing, we have found duplicate books to those already held in the library and these are now available for a small donation. The sunscreen roller blinds are in place and the light bulbs have been upgraded to LED which makes the lighting in the room much improved. The library continues to be open on Noggin nights 7.30 pm – 9.30 pm and on most OCBC days. I look forward to seeing you as you browse around.

Vintage Report Daffodil Rally for Cancer on Sunday 23rd August. What a turnout! Spectacular! When I woke to rain pounding on the roof at 4.00am my hopes for a successful day sank. What a difference a few hours make. So many vehicle types turned out for the rally and display at Cutler Park. A great turnout of people looking at the vehicles on display and with raffles, sausage sizzle, live music and coffee carts there was plenty going on to be occupied. Let’s hope our 2026 contribution to the Cancer Society is a good one! As I mentioned in my last report we have the club’s Vintage Annual Rally on the 27th September. So, if you’re a Vintage vehicle owner this is your day.

As previously we will use Cutler Park as our base. The rally and time section will commence after morning tea and return to Culter Park. After lunch there will be trials and events along with prizegiving and afternoon tea. If for whatever reason your Vintage is not available and if you have another club eligible vehicle bring it along and enjoy the day. Just to note that non Vintage vehicles will not be ‘prize’ eligible. Please get your entry forms in. This can be found in the Hub and online. See you motoring out and about. Jeremy Wise

MOTORCYCLE REPORT Into Spring now, the days are longer, soon the sharp winds will drop away… Past Events. It has been very quiet these last couple of months or so, the insistent rain and very cold winds have ensured that common sense prevails when it comes to choosing an activity on any given day… 12th August – Noggin Night. The Mid Winter dinner night out for members and partners. Close on 40 enjoyed the Hornby Club’s Chalmers Restaurant. The night was wet and cold, so the warmth of the Hornby Club surroundings was a bonus. Future Events. As this report has to be in by Sunday 23rd, the Round the Bays Run will be reported next month. 29th August – Round the Bays Run. Start at PMH (Princess Margaret Hospital), meet there at 10.00 am for a 10.30 am start. Rider’s briefing etc. by the organiser, Quentin Wearing. No entry required, just turn up and ride. 9th September – Noggin Night. This is a new visit, to the engineering and plant room of St Georges Hospital. Chris Stevens, Facility Manager, will be conducting the visit. Meet 7.30 pm, at 153 Leinster Road, look out for the VCC sign. 20th September – Trials Event, VCC Grounds. Organisers are the very experienced pairing of Peter Barnett and Joseph McClintock, plus Roger Abel. That being the case, this should be a good event Starts 10.00 am, with BBQ lunch as well. See the advert elsewhere for full details. 26th September – Fish & Chip Run. This will be the first F&C run for the new summer season, so meet at The Peg 9.30 am, hour run to Waikari, then 2 hours to wander through the sheep shearing museum, then a BBQ lunch at about 1.00 pm. Check the Event Reminder emails if necessary 7th October – Noggin Night. A week earlier due to the Swap Meet Weekend. People will be out at the Island dropping off bikes etc. for the display and setting up Swap Meet sites so decision made to bring the monthly noggin

FORWARD one week. The noggin will be at Motorcycle Corner, the fire will be going, so it will be a natter session. Balloon goes up 7.30 pm. 9th – 11th October – Swap Meet. Motorcycle display organised, theme is advancing technology. About 26 – 28 bikes lined up by Joseph McClintock.. Well worth the effort to take a look, and promote this amongst your mates as they take in the bargains and sights of yet another Swap Meet. 17th – 18th October – Girder Fork Rally. This will be the 40th running of this event so a concerted effort will be made to get as many eligible bikes on this run. Also, looking for members who in the past frequented this run but in recent years have not been able to. Your entry is needed NOW, so see the advert elsewhere and respond accordingly. 31st October – Fish & Chip Run. Possibly to the Vintage Machinery Club (next door but one…) As most would like some sort of ride/run rather than just climb over the fence, the thought is to meet at PMH at 9.30 am, a short run of about an hour or so until 11.00 am to arrive at the Machinery Club, then a BBQ lunch at the Motorcycle Shelter 1.00 pm. Look out for the Event Reminders to confirm details etc. of this and any other events this next month or two.

Motorcycle Fun Day/Trial Cutler Park Sunday 20th September 2026 10.00 am Start. The Motorcycle Section will be running a fun day/trial. Any type of motorcycle/moped is welcome. Bikes do NOT have to be club eligible, registered, or have a WOF. In fact, anything that has an engine and two wheels will be OK for this event. So, get that old bike out from the back of the garage or shed and have a go! The Classic Trials Club will be joining us, but they will be setting up their own courses. The courses will be suitable for any level of experience. This is NOT a speed event; the aim is to complete the same course twice, in the same time. Bring your friends, children and grandchildren, and have a go. A couple of years ago we had our youngest competitor, a 5 year old on a small electric bike, he had a ball!! The Classic Trials Club support this event with a great turnout of their members, please support YOUR club by coming out and having a go. There will be a BBQ lunch supplied at a cost of $5.00 pp, so come prepared for a great day out.

Mid-Winter Motorcycle Run Kaikoura

The annual Vintage Car Club Motorcycle Mid-Winter Run was held over the weekend of 25–26 July, with Kaikoura as our destination this year. A total of 25 entrants took part, with Royce and Jan providing the allimportant backup support. The run was organised by Paul Ainsworth and Mike Glenday, who put together an excellent weekend of riding, sightseeing and good company. We left Cutler Park and headed north to Waikari, where we stopped for scones and coffee before continuing through the Waikari Valley Road to the coast. From there, we made our way north, stopping at Cheviot for lunch before continuing on to Kaikoura. One of the highlights of the afternoon was a visit to Amanda and Phipps, who were kind enough to open up their amazing collection of motorcycles and cars for us to admire. There was plenty to interest everyone, and it was a great opportunity to see such an impressive collection. From there it was on to our accommodation at Donegal House. After a day's riding in typical mid-winter conditions, it was particularly welcome to settle in for the evening and enjoy an excellent meal and some good conversation. The following morning we climbed back onto the bikes and headed south towards Christchurch, with a lunch stop at Greta Valley before completing the journey home. The weather certainly lived up to the "Mid-Winter" part of the event. It was cold, and Saturday was a little damp, but that did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm. With a great group of riders, some excellent roads, interesting stops and plenty of good company, it was another very successful Motorcycle Mid-Winter Run. A big thank you to Paul and Mike for organising the event, to Royce and Jan for providing the backup, and to Amanda and Phipps for generously sharing their wonderful collection with us. It was another fine example of what the Vintage Car Club is all about - getting our old vehicles out on the road, enjoying some good country roads, and spending a weekend with fellow enthusiasts. 44

Report from the National Delegate Meeting The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand Inc 2026. You will notice the new name, this was brought in following the change in the constitution. At Friday night's meeting, we reviewed our projected budget for the coming years to evaluate the club's financial path moving forward.

Here are the main outcomes and proposals from the discussion: ● Digital Election Papers: The updated constitution now permits us to email election papers and reports. Transitioning to email will immediately alleviate our heavy postage costs. ● Beaded Wheels Magazine: Production and mailing for our six annual editions remain a top expense. The meeting included a proposal to potentially reduce the number of editions produced per year to cut down on printing and distribution fees. ● Meeting Costs: The amount of meetings we have per year between the reps. Using “Teams” meetings rather than in person. We will continue to refine these budget projections as we move forward. Please let me know if you have any questions or additional feedback before the upcoming discussions. Constitutional Compliance & Branch Accounts: Unfortunately, some branches have not yet gotten their accounts in order in accordance with our new constitution. It was pointed out that support is available from Linda and Murray from the National Office to provide direct help and guidance to any branches struggling to update or standardise their financial records. Vero Insurance Member Experiences: There was mixed feedback regarding member insurance claims. While some members reported highly positive outcomes, others experienced negative coverage issues and struggled to get assistance. This friction was largely caused by representatives from Vero giving conflicting information, making the process very confusing for our members. To address these issues, George has been in discussions with 46

the National Manager from Vero as he attended our recent National Rally in Nelson. His attendance gave him a much better, firsthand understanding of our unique cars/motorbikes. He acknowledged that our vehicles are not "run of the mill" daily drivers. They require highly specialised insurance because they cannot be easily replaced and frequently depend on rare parts sourced from overseas. To streamline future claims and remove stress for our members, George is putting forward a formal proposal to Vero. The proposal suggests that our own team, at the National Office, handle the intake and administration of Vero claim forms. Our National Office staff could be fully trained on the precise ins and outs of Vero Insurance products. By acting as the primary, knowledgeable point of contact, we aim to eliminate conflicting advice and deliver a smoother, stress-free claims experience. The AGM minutes will be sent out by the National Office and this report does not contain any of those minutes. But of note, Kevin Clarkson, from Canterbury Branch, was awarded life membership. This was well deserved after many years of producing the Beaded Wheels magazine and many hours on the National Management team. After the AGM: The delegates were broken into branch groups with the representative for their area. Our group includes Canterbury, Bank Peninsula, Greymouth, Nelson and Marlborough with our representative being Andy Fox. It was decided within each group how the communication was going to work. A meeting on teams every two months done on “Teams” with all 5 branches. The alternate month will be a quick chat either via email or phone to the individual branch delegate. Our branch delegate has not been confirmed yet but Catherine is the current contact person. The purpose of the role is to facilitate communication and relay suggestions between the National Committee and the branches. It was acknowledged that not all proposals put forward by an individual branch will necessarily be adopted, as recommendations must be considered and approved by both the other branches and the National Committee. Members should be prepared for out47

comes that may differ from their branch’s preferred position, recognising the decisions are made in the best interests of the organisation as a whole. The voting system is still one vote per branch. We both enjoyed the opportunity to meet new delegates and for me, reconnect with others who were experienced in their roles. The sharing of knowledge and experiences was the key objective of the meeting and was successfully achieved. "Ma Bolton's" Long Term Taxi service. Irene Bolton was a very well known New Brighton identity. Born in 1908, she was one of the first women taxi drivers in Christchurch. The New Brighton Taxi business operated from 27 Beresford Street, with a public stand on the corner of Seaview Road and Oram Ave. The Bolton's first taxi was a 1928 Essex Super Six, replaced later with the above 1938 Studebaker. In 1939 Irene's husband, Vic, enlisted for WWII, and Irene carried on the business alone . She would wear a black armband with her taxi smock when a local soldier was killed. As well as driving the taxi, Mrs Bolton ran the pie shop opposite the taxi stand, serving pea, pie and pud, to the soldiers who were training at the New Brighton Race course (Now QEII park). She also sewed soldiers' shirts at home, for Duckworth and Turner's New Brighton factory. She received one shilling for each shirt. When the war ended the taxi service was combined with Gold Band Taxis, and the cab was updated to the black 6 cylinder 1954 Chevrolet 150 Saloon above. Many brides were driven to the church by Mrs Bolton, with the cab fully dressed with dolls, white ribbons, and fresh flowers inside. The taxi business was maintained until 1960, and then Mrs Bolton drove the Chev as a volunteer driver for Handi-scope classes at Burwood Hospital.
