CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Another busy month has gone by, and for a change I've actually managed to find time to participate in branch activities in amongst the other things that need attention, all the more difficult with the evenings disappearing into darkness earlier each day.
The P group rally was a very pleasant day out, ending with a look around the very interesting Ashburton aviation museum, including a warm smoko room to have lunch out of the rather cold wind, and a talk from one of the volunteers on the history of the museum and it's expansion over the years, and the story behind some of their more interesting acquisitions. Many thanks to John Enright and his helpers on the day for an enjoyable event, and to everyone who attended in the wide range of vehicles that make up the group from 1933 to 1996.
As a branch we are very fortunate to have sufficient volunteers to look after the various things necessary to keep things running, speaking to members from other branches this is not the case for many branches around the country. After a couple of months since joining the committee Catherine Tibbles is getting acquainted with what's involved as branch secretary, and Kevin Clarkson is getting things sorted for bookings for camping and use of our branch facilities, thanks to both of you for putting up your hands to help out.
Looking forward there's still plenty to do, and plenty of events on the calendar to keep you amused and your vehicles exercised, so will see you out and about.

As we move into the autumnal months, with the cooler mornings and the falling leaves there is still plenty happening within the Canterbury branch!
With the price of petrol going up by the minute, the committee decided to combine the Runs since they were a week apart. liams are organising it this year. 9th May 2026. up on the day situation - costing $10. Please see the advertisement in this hub.
As part of their Noggin, the motorcycle section have organised an after hours' viewing of the new John Britten Motorcycle Museum, cnr Cashel St & Cambridge Terrace, right opposite the Bridge of Remembrance. This will commence at 7.30 pm on the 13th May.
As this is after hours the museum wants to know how many people are likely to turn up as they need to put on enough staff for security and showing us about. Please contact Paul Ainsworth if you are interested on 0274 321 391.
Fraser Kear and Jronte Clarke are organising the Ross Butler Memorial Grasskhana this year. They tell me it is not a speed test but a technically challenging ride! See the advertisement in this Hub. Should be a good day out!

VETERAN REPORT
April’s veteran activities got underway with a rather relaxed (for most) display over the weekend of 11th and 12th April at the annual Steam Extravaganza, with many of us cooling our tyres somewhat after the rather hectic February and March period, especially including the Vero Rally. Held right next to our home grounds at Cutler Park, seven cars were put on display, with the weather just holding out over the whole weekend whilst the cyclone swept across the North Island. It was a very good weekend there – the crowds numbered well into the thousands, and there was a continuous stream of activities happening in the grounds to keep everyone happy and entertained. Thirty traction engines turned up, and all had a turn either driving various bits of machinery or just doing a display circuit around their central track at different times. There was always something moving and/or belching black smoke to look at, including a few slow rides on our cars on request for anyone who asked. We were very happy to oblige! We have a few VCC members who are involved in Steam Scene, and I have to say I was impressed with the enthusiasm of some of them for the work they put into this event. In particular I’d like to mention Allan Familton and Lesley Colsell, who had 2 full size traction engines, the Foden steam truck, their Stanley steam car, a steam boat, and a working miniature traction engine all there for the weekend, and all operational. On top of that they were looking after their two young grandchildren, and were helping run the event as well!
The Stanley was used both days for the children’s lolly scramble, and there were literally hundreds of children running behind it both days trying to collect the lollies. As happened last year too, Cutler Park was used for the public car parking, and the whole front and eastern side of our grounds was full on both days – we are very lucky to have our neighbouring clubs and to be able to share each other’s facilities for events like these which each of us run during the year.
A couple of days later, after brushing the soot and dust off ourselves and our cars, we had our monthly coffee meeting at Thirsty Acres in Kirwee. A good turnout this month, including a first time appearance for Lindsay De Groot, who drove his 1910 REO single cylinder car all the way from Weedons and back. I think this was his first run in this car in his ownership, and apart from the speedometer gear on a front wheel coming loose, it made it there and back without a problem.
Included in the discussions at Kirwee was where and when our next Random Run would be, and with the weather forecast looking very good for the following Friday (17th), it was decided to aim for that. We arranged to meet at Malcolm McGibbon’s place near Darfield at 11am, and three of us did a run from there to Glentunnel for lunch at the Golf Course café, and then carried on to Whitecliffs. From there we took Hartleys Road and Waianiwaniwa Road over the hill to join Malvern Hills Road, then came out onto the Inland Route 72 using Auchenflower Road, before heading back to Malcolm’s place. A lot of gravel in the 60km we drove, but most of it was in great condition, so just a bit of dust to contend with and clean off the cars later. The weather was great and it was certainly nice being out in the cars – Malcolm in his Model T Speedster, Allan & Lesley in the 1908 De Dion, and Jenny and I in our 1909 Wolseley.
The events for the month were rounded off with the Malvern Anzac Day Run on Anzac Day. There were 10 veteran vehicles on the run, including the 1915 Douglas motorcycle ridden by Percy Ralston from Ashburton, and the 1902 Rambler recently recom-
missioned by Chris Stephens from our Branch which did the full distance of the run. And of course we were also joined by a mixture of 35 other vintage and PV cars for the run around the Malvern War Memorials. The weather was picture perfect, and it was absolutely great being out to enjoy it again and take in the significance of the day as we stopped at the several memorial sites on the way, finishing at the Glentunnel memorial and Community Centre for lunch. It was pointed out that next year will be the 10th running of this event, so we’ll have to have a think about what we can include to make it just that little bit more special. I already have a few ideas which I’d better write down now rather than try and commit them to memory! I’d also like to thank Auto Restorations Group, Birchfield Energy and Resources, and the Malvern and Rolleston News for their assistance in promoting the event.
Coming Veteran Events
Tuesday 12th May - Veteran Coffee at Thirsty Acres, Kirwee, 11am. Feel free to come on the cheapest form of transport you have if it doesn’t happen to be your Veteran machine.
May Mid-week Random Run – destination will be discussed at the Veteran Coffee morning, but distance will be kept in mind wherever we decide to go, and it will be a shorter all-sealed route this month. Keep an eye on the Veteran Facebook Page after Tuesday 12th May for final details.
Our first (unofficial) committee meeting was held on Thursday 9th April, the main topic of discussion being the debrief notes from last year’s Swap Meet, promotions for this year, and then the election of the Swap Meet committee for 2026. Nominations are still open for any financial member of the branch to join the committee, and all positions are open. Nomination forms can be picked up at the May Noggin, or you can request one from the Contact Us page on the club website, or from the Branch Secretary, email secretary@vcccanterbury.org.nz Nominations will close on Monday 11th May 2026. Our next committee meeting will be on Thursday 11th June following ratification of the new committee at the June full Branch Committee meeting, but regardless of that planning is proceeding well to ensure all the detailed background details proceed as normal. Already sites are about 85% sold, so if you haven’t already secured one and want one this year, please contact Neil Shaskey.

Another good turnout for the April OCBC, despite the current uncertainties around fuel prices. It’s good that Cutler Park isn’t far out of town, meaning probably a run of no more than 20km or so for most to get there. A few new or different cars again this month, including a potential trials car that has been built up by 15 year-old Zac Poulden out of the leftovers from his father James’ recent restoration of a 1939 Renault 12. A very rusty spares car was bought for that project which yielded a number of hard-to-get parts, so with still plenty left over, Zac decided to have a go at making up a motor-able machine which he could learn some mechanical skills on and even some basic driving techniques. They brought the ‘thing’ out on a trailer to OCBC to show it off, where Zac proved it was mobile (it had already done bout 1km around the paddock at home). It certainly created a lot of interest. There was also plenty of other nice machinery brought out, which is always worth looking at and talking about. May’s OCBC is on Sunday 17th May, which will also see the running of our annual Ross Butler Memorial Grasskhana in our grounds, so come out and enjoy a coffee and stay a bit longer for the entertainment the
grasskhana provides (or even take part in it). Remember too that OCBC is for anyone to come to, so if you have friends who are into old cars or bikes and are not club members, please don’t hesitate to invite them out as well.

THE VOG’s LOG
Tuesday April 14th dawned to a cracker of a day and the thrill of another day out for the “VOG Gang” to partake on a run organised this time by Gary Thompson starting from Nga Puna Wai sports complex in Hillmorton. A fantastic centre this is with all the sports facilities here including the new undercover Netball courts. A very busy place over the weekends with parking at a premium.
The run this month took us mainly along cycleways in the Wigram and Spreydon areas this being a very safe environment for our wee machines keeping out of the way of cars trucks and those speedy electric scooters which really annoy us immensely when we see how much we need to pay in ACC levies included in our registration fee – how “dangerous” is riding a ‘Solex compared to an electric scooter! Say no more.
As usual these rides never go smoothly and there is always a drama along the way. This time our faithful backup Colin got snarled up in the closure of parts of Wigram Rd then was slowed down by large trucks hogging the road and not allowing him to make a right hand turn where he needed to. (How frustrating for him!!) We awaited him at the point where he was meant to rendezvous with us. This meant cutting off our motors (thinking pollution here with an idling 2 stroke motor) and to save fuel (probably around 2mls). No sign of Colin for some time due to his delays but after a phone call to him discovered he was nearly with us again. This was when Gary’s mechanical problems reared there head yet again – his bike wouldn’t start and after much pedalling and sweating and cursing he gave up. Good ole Dave Backhouse our “Team Mechanic” came to the rescue and Gary’s bike soon fired up and we were on our way once again.
Smooth riding in the sunshine from then on we thought but alas we had two hills to climb firstly the overbridge on Wigram Road
and then the Aidanfield Drive one. These are always a challenge for the “.01 hp” engine to ascend without the need of some pedalling which none of us wish to resort to - maybe it’s because of the embarrassment of failure or the exhaustion of the pedalling that creates this situation. All part of the fun.
The ride ended up once again at the “Good Home Gastropub” in Wigram Sky’s. I think they must enjoy us patronising their establishment as we seem to be frequent visitors there. Nothing wrong with that.

9-90s
Hi Everyone. We were once again blessed with a beautiful day for 9-90s and Graeme and Marlene came up with a great short run to save us all a bit of petrol. (excuse my French) Although it was only 45 km it seemed longer as we wove around little used roads lined with trees just starting to show their autumn colours. We drove through Ohoka then out through Kaiapoi red zone and curled back to cross over the old Waimac bridge and through Kianga and Brooklands then Spencerville to go right out to Marshlands Rd and into Ouruhia park where Graeme had obtained a key to let us across the park to set up in a beautifully sheltered area handy to facilities. Our usual social circle had a bit of a blowout as people spread out in a long line to enjoy the view and keep the sun on their backs giving Lloyd & Diane a bit of a walk selling tickets and some winners in the raffle a longer walk to collect their prizes.
A Great day had by all. Thanks to Graeme & Marlene.
May’s outing will start at the Peg Belfast pub car Park on the 13th at 9.55am. Many Thanks to Phil B for stepping up to organise this one for us. A short run on sealed roads to an interesting collection / workshop. There will be an entry fee of $15.00 per person.

Vintage Report
April has been the converse of March, much quieter on the motoring front for me. There was no way that I could continue that frequency of activities and events.
I have also consciously cut back on being out and about too, trying to do my bit for fuel conservation and be fiscally responsible.
Is everybody enjoying this lovely balmy warm weather! An ode to a summer that we never really had!
I did manage to get to the Malvern ANZAC Day Run which was on Saturday 25th April.
Colin Hey, the organiser, seems to nearly always arrange the most perfect weather! There was a good range of cars taking part from Veteran through to 1970’s. I find it a really enjoyable run as there are options in route distance, which can be determined enroute, as it is very easy to lose time at the war memorials and of course chatting over cars at each stop. The start of the run was preceded by a representative from the RSA to say a few words and a bugler for Last Post.
As always, the mountains form the back drop to the run. This time they were cloaked in snow so made the run quite spectacular. It was a great day out!

Once again, it was time for the annual P Group Rally. This year’s destination was the Ashburton Aviation Museum, providing an excellent focal point for a great day out.
The weather threatened to spoil the fun, and rising petrol prices also had an impact, resulting in a smaller turnout than usual. Despite this, those who attended were enthusiastic and keen, which helped maintain the great spirit of the event.
As always, the field trials were hotly contested, with some very impressive scores recorded throughout the day.
Following the trials, we set off on a scenic run across the Canterbury Plains. The route took us through Rolleston, skirting around Lake Ellesmere before heading on to Southbridge. From there, we continued to the Rakaia Bridge, where a left turn at Rakaia led us along back roads through classic Canterbury farmland.
At the museum, the team hosted us exceptionally well. One of the museum members generously gave us a talk outlining the history and development of the collection. They are close to completing a new building, which will significantly improve the way their aircraft are displayed.
The aircraft collection was extensive and fascinating, featuring a wide range of historic planes. Highlights included the only Harrier jump jet in the Southern Hemisphere, which attracted plenty of attention from members.
For those who ordered a plaque, these will be available for collection at the next Noggin.

Proposed amendment to Branch Constitution
The Branch Committee have been advised by the Club Management Committee that the Club legal advisers have recommended an amendment to the Winding Up clause of the Branch Constitution.
This amendment is due to IRD rules regarding tax on income for Incorporated Societies, which provides an exemption for sporting clubs, the Vintage Car Club is included under this exemption.
In the unlikely event that the Branch ceases its activities, there could be tax implications for any funds distributed to other organisations if they are not included under this exemption. The proposed amendment is to add the word ‘sporting’ to clause 25.2 of the Branch Constitution, to reads as follows;
25.2 If such resolution is confirmed at that further meeting, then the Branch shall be wound up under the provisions of the Act. If there remains after the satisfaction of all its debts and liabilities any property whatsoever, such property shall not be paid to or distributed among Members of the Branch but shall be donated, as the Branch in Special General Meeting shall determine, to the Club (so long as it is a not-for-profit entity), some other Branch or Branches of the Club (so long as it is a not-for-profit entity) or to such other not-for-profit sporting or charitable organisation as approved by the Club Secretary/Treasurer.
As this amendment has no material effect on how the branch conducts its business, it is proposed to be made by unanimous resolution of the Branch Committee as allowed for under clause 22.4 of the Branch Constitution (available on the Branch website or printed copy at the clubrooms) without the requirement for a notice of motion and vote at a Branch AGM, providing that it is notified and there is no objection from any branch member.
Accordingly, if any branch member has an objection to this amendment the objection is to be advised to the Branch Secretary by 11th June 2026, if no objection is forthcoming the amendment will then be proposed and voted on at the July meeting of the Branch Committee.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT
Now firmly in the grips of Autumn… Rain and winds galore, but at least the temperatures are holding out…
Past Events.
15th – 22nd March – Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring, Nelson. A great representation from the VCC Canterbury Branch. Nobody on bikes from Canterbury, but to be fair there were only 6 motorcycles registered for the Festival, and they were veteren or early vintage in the main. Canterbury did win the trophy for the most entries as a percentage of their branch membership…
18th March – Old Codger’s Run. Remember, the OCR is NOT an official VCC event! Met at the Dot Com Cafe, 48 Marriner Street, Sumner, then round to Church Bay to visit the Two Thumbs Brewery for an inspection and bite of lunch. Apparently quite successful, a reported 38 bikes attended.
28th March – Fish & Chip Run. Met at the Peg Hotel for a run to the Hurunui Pub for lunch. 8 intrepid riders made the journey…
8th April – M/C Noggin – We had a garage raid on a member’s shed containing the restoration prioject to end all restoration projects – a 1901 Fowler Steam Traction Engine… What a BEAST!!! In spite of him thinking “Who’d be interested in an old steam engine? 28 people turned up, much to his surprise!! Many thanks to the owner, and to Mike for organising!
10 – 12th April 2026, Jim Toohey Run. Not sure, but I think about 2 dozen made the trip including the back-up driver. See elsewhere for the write-up from Joseph McClintock.
15th April – Old Codger’s Run. Remember, the OCR is NOT an official VCC event!! Beautiful sunny day with no wind greeted the OCR riders as they made their way to Ravenswood then a circuit through Leeston, Birch Hill Road, Ashley Gorge, Oxford then to lunch at Cust. An excellent turnout of 35 bikes!
18th April – Small Motorcycle (<250 cc) Run. Starting from the Papanui WMC 13 riders on classic British 2 & 4 stroke and Hon-
das, a few European classics, and a few other gems thrown in. No wind (much to the rider’s relief), but plenty of fine weather. Lunch and final venues provided plenty of motor racing enertainment to top up the adrenalin!! Thanks to Pete for organising, sounds as though it was a blast!!
19th April – Fish & Chip Run. Brought forward a week so that we can join in with the Canterbury Classic Trials Club event which is out near Cust. Unfortunately, not a good turnout from our members. Excellent turnout from our hosts, but only 2 from VCC and 3 TOMCC. Hosts showed considerable skills in manouvering around the many courses, skills greatly appreciated!!
25th April – Fish & Chip Run. Rather than plan this for a long weekend it was decided to bring the F&C run forward a week to Sunday 19th and join in the Canterbury Trials Club on their outing at Cust – see above.
Future Events.
13th May – Motorcycle Noggin. Noggin is at John Britten's new museum in the city. Meet at the Museum at 7.00pm, entry fee will apply which will be payable by the individual. Paul Ainsworth is the organiser of this visit. Address is - corner of Cashel Street & Cambridge Terrace, opposite The Bridge of Remembrance. A notice was put out seeking registrations as the hosts wanted to know how many so appropriate staffing is put on. Please respond to register!
17th May – Distinguished Gentlemen’s Run. Note, This is a SUNDAY. Distinguished Gentlemen's Run; a world wide ride to promote men's health. To register for this event go to https://gentlemansride.com/ Dress in your best attire.
20th May – Old Codger’s Run. Remember, the OCR is NOT an official VCC event! ANY rider on ANY motorcycle of ANY age is invited to gather for a coffee then ride. It is all about getting bums on seats! We generally stop the OCR over the colder winter months so this will be the last until August. More info to be advised by email a week prior.
23rd May – Fish & Chip Run. Brought forward as the next Saturday is Kings Birthday Weekend. Meet PMH at 10.15 for 10.30 start. Weather dependent but maybe a ride to Glentunnel for coffee at the cafe at the golf club cafe.
7th June – Restoration of the Year. Have you finished a restoration of your motorcycle over the last 12 months? “The Eric Walker Trophy for the Best Motorcycle Restoration” awaits to recognise your best efforts!! You do need to enter in advance, so to start off you should be hasstling the Club Captain, Katryna Shaw, for the required entry form. All you need is plenty of photos taken throughout the restoration and a bit of a story and you are all good to go!
10th June – Noggin Night plus AGM of the Motorcycle Section. Time to get re-elected, or to elbow your way onto the committee. As a further inducement after the proceedings have been completed it is not unknown for some bribery supper to be put on by the section. Come along with YOUR ideas on the running of the section, YOUR input is vital to the ongoing success. Balloon goes up at 7.30pm.

2026 Jim Toohey Rally
20 riders & 1 Pillion lined up on Friday morning at Cuttler Park for the start of the Jim Toohey rally, The weather was fine but overcast the first stop was Culverden for a coffee, heading over Weka pass there was a few spots of rain on the visor but at Waikari the sun was out for the rest of the day. Lunch stop was at Hanmer springs then onto Springs Junction to stretch the legs continuing on to Murchison. The more adventurist riders went through Maruia Saddle a shingle road with several fords. Johnathan Ables Triumph twin decided to only run on 1 cylinder so with the help of our backup team Royce & Jan Baker it was loaded onto the trailer, that evening the fault was diagnosed as a faulty ignition coil. The next day we left Murchison in light fog but this soon cleared as we headed to Reefton, a local VCC member in Reefton provided Johnathan a coil so the bike was off the trailer & back on the road & on to Blacks Point Museum for a guided tour then back into Reefton for lunch, next stop was Blackball for a refreshment before continuing onto Ross for the night. The Hospitality & food at the Ross Hotel was 10 out of 10 with the bonus of a motorcycle collection just across the road. The next morning the skies were overcast, heading up to Otira there was some light rain but this soon stopped the road was wet through Arthurs Pass but no rain. The primary chain on Mike Glenday’s Triumph started rattling so it was on the trailer for the last part of the trip. Final stop was at Springfield before everyone headed home.

Greetings all,
March has been a busy month and that crazy war in the middle east has caused some issues for VCC members. Not only do our vehicles require fuel, which is in short supply, but the cost has skyrocketed! Maybe those EV’s aren’t so bad after all?! But I’m still not convinced.
Canterbury had the Brooklands to Brighton run on March 1st which was nice. Unfortunately, it rained in New Brighton, but we had lunch in the dry and put the hood up on the way home and did the drive between showers.
I was in Nelson for the Vero festival of historic motoring which was great fun. The weather was amazing, and it was nice to travel some different roads. The festival was well organised and apart from a few meal and traffic issues getting in and out of the venue all at the same time it seemed to go quite well. The Lagonda performed well which was great! We trailered it up to save time and wear on the vehicle.
