OCTOBER EVENTS The club events are starting to line up on the horizon, beginning with club night and a much needed Health & Safety refresh by committee member Russell Hulbert, something we all need to be aware of. The Mid Month shed run being organised by Doug Brown is going to be a beaut and a definite calendar marker. Doug will update us at the club night. The End of Month brunch is being organised and an update will follow. September Nog & Natter at the Tauranga Citz Club was an enjoyable get together with a number of members arriving for good food and company. October N&N is at The Rain Bar, Papamoa. The menu is great with a Tuesday night special always available. Come along and join us for an excellent evening. 6pm start time. Contact Lynn Howard 027 3106451. September club room movie night showing ‘The Castle’ proved to be a humorous viewing and the complimentary ice cream intermission went down well. I was surprised (shocked) to see the movie being aired on TV the following night! Octobers movie is ‘Open All Hours” series three, a nowadays politically incorrect and full of humour movie that will be well worth the watch. BYO dinner and refreshments starts 6pm. Movie 7pm with the usual intermission treats. NOVEMBER SWAP MEET AND SHOW
Our next major event will be the swap meet and car show. This event raises money for the club funds which contributes to our enjoyment and also promotes awareness of our club. To make this event successful your help is required to assist in managing the morning on a roster basis. Organiser Bruce Tait has a list of intending help for such duties but would certainly appreciate more names. Please assist Bruce by confirming your attendance for the day and what duties you would like to perform. Bruce or any committee member will appreciate you contacting them. Advertising for the show is well under way and we intend to make this our best show and swap meet ever. Billboards are available at the clubroom for members to advertise this event. At just a month away it’s time to sort your cars for not only the resto awards but for the morning display. See you all there for this amazing spectacle.
CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY The December Christmas get-together is being organised as a run to the Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel. The venue has offered us an exceptional Pre-Christmas Carvery Lunch Menu at a great price. Chairman Donn is organising an alternative to the Kaimai SH29A route which will circumvent the “hill” This will be a fabulous get together which I am very much looking forward to. What we urgently need is your early registration so that booking can commence. Please indicate your intention at the October club night and join in the Christmas Festivities.

EDS RAMBLINGS Lynn, Graham & Helen Meredith and myself jumped in the Dodge and had the pleasure of joining the September Mid Month “Katikati 150th Anniversary” run and although the weather was a ’little’ windy, we made it to the designated assembly area on time. Included in a good turn-out of our members, a variety of veteran, vintage vehicles and tractors arrived for the parade and we were led off by Doug Brown in his Model ‘A’ on a route lined by happy waving and pic snapping people to the parking area alongside the Saturday market. After lunch, we wandered into town to check out the numerous Op shops for period clothing and were met by their staff who were very inviting and appreciative of the parade.
There was a general consensus that we had definitely ‘clicked’ with the town. The journey back to Tauranga was an adventure in itself with the main road closed from a large tree being blown down and taking a few large concrete power poles with it, blocking the road. We were diverted along the back roads that were too minor for large trucks to navigate and it added an extra hour to the normal drive time home. Many thanks to Doug for organising the clubs participation in this event.
The September end of month event involved joining the Distinguished Gentleman’s Drive to raise funds for prostrate cancer and men’s mental health and is part of the ‘movember’ initiative. The drive idea is to dress ‘dapper’ in conjunction with the vehicle you drive. Lynn and I dressed in our appropriate clothing, jumped in the Dodge and met up with a number of our club members and other participants at the Classic Flyers venue Tauranga with one couple in a classic Volkswagen that had driven from Auckland to take part in the event. We had morning refreshments while photo’s were being taken of the vehicles and participants then we collected our route sheets and started on the rally.
The route took us through a busy down-town Mount Maunganui and out onto Marine Parade, heading towards Domain Road,
Papamoa where we all stopped to regroup. From there we travelled onto Welcome Bay Road turning left onto SH2A and then turning right onto Cameron Road. We continued on Cameron Road to finish at the Oaktree Restaurant for a very filling buffet lunch. Presentations were made at the venue for most monies raised and I am pleased to say that the couple from Auckland won a prize. For the event, On the day Tauranga had raised just under $5000 with the final total to be published soon. We thoroughly enjoyed this drive and meeting up with our fellow VCC members and would recommend anyone to do this campaign next November.
I have received correspondence from a former BOPVCC member Max (mad) Allen, the late Ivan Allen’s brother, who although resides in the UK, is still a member of Far North VCC. My memory was jogged by Max who remembered that we worked together for the NZ Forest Service many years ago and when conversing with Ivan, I never twigged to the relationship. Max still has a passion for cars and sent some photo’s from the shows that he visits in the UK. His interesting comment was that it cost an equivalent of NZD53 entry fee to get into these large shows which are disappearing each year as greater safety legislation, higher organisational costs and huge insurance requirements make them no longer profitable. The once global Great Dorset Steam Fair covering 1200 acres of exhibits stopped a couple of years ago, unlikely to ever reappear. His last visit to the Goodwood Revival some years ago set him back $150, so no longer attends.
So far I feel we have been lucky not to have been affected by these sorts of restrictions and I sincerely hope that it doesn't come to that in New Zealand. Max’s VCC qualified German, Cologne built Ford Scorpio Ultima. Cosworth 2.9ltr engine with auto transmission.
