CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
Greeting to you all. As I write this report, I realise that this is my last for the year as Chairman, as we approach the end of the club year. I would like to express my thanks to the committee members who have served the club so well over the past year, together with all those members that have got involved through the organising of runs, assisting at event’s and generally getting involved in the wider activities of the branch. A big thank you. The year has been a challenge for many, mainly through the Covid pandemic, but we persevered and as a club managed to get some normality into life and hold runs, meetings and kitchen nights. Those members that attended the Vero Rally in New Plymouth were treated to a great event, and we were very lucky with the timing, and our branch was well represented at the event. Our own Safari weekend was another success story, venturing to Whanganui for a well organised & planned weekend.

Over the course of the year there have been a number of new members signing up, and a warm welcome is extended to you all. Sadly, as with all clubs, we have had members signing off and it always sad to see them go. As I sign off for the year, again thank you all for your support over the year. While I have refrained from naming individuals in my report, those close to the action know who you are, so a special thank you. Moving forward I know that you will all support the incoming committee and we look forward to a good vintage year.
CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT// By Paul Anderson
Autumn Tones Jaunt; I did not go on the actual May Club Run as I remained at the Clubrooms, assisting Wayne Richards who ensured that everything was in order for the return of the Tourists. My wife Janine, despite having been over the route on a reconnaissance trip the week before still wanted to go on the trip and talked her way into the back seat of Malcolm and Lesley Blairs Chrysler – anything to get out of a bit of work…. So, it fell to her to write the report on the trip. Janine takes up the story….. It was a sunny but cold day for our Autumn run. Members assembled at the clubrooms and 23 cars departed for the run heading south along the east side of the Tuki Tuki River to Waimarama Beach. There were lovely views over the river and the trees, all in their autumn colours. From the top of the hill above Waimarama we had a good view out to Bare Island. However, on turning inland and climbing up from the coast, the cloud descended and obscured any views looking back toward the sea and at times the car in front of you. Fortunately the cloud lifted as we joined the Maraetotara Road allowing lovely views of the hills and surrounding farm land. On crossing back over the Tuku Tuki we followed the road passing Craggy Range Winery through the avenue of trees and again great views over the river.

Finishing point for the run was back at the Club rooms for tea and coffee, light refreshments followed by a BBQ meal cooked by Wayne. A great way to finish a nice day out. May Club Meeting; Our guest speaker was Neil Dunn who regaled us with stories about his time as a radio announcer at Bay City Radio in the early days. Neil is also a Brand manager for Skoda and brought along a Skoda Superb Wagon (PHEV – plug in Hybrid). His presentation on this vehicle was very interesting and he answered a lot of questions I had on electric Vehicles in general. He also answered the difficult questions honestly and without hiding behind slick manufacturers presentations. As an aside, the car drove into the Club shed with a few millimetre’s spare on each side of the folded wing mirrors, but we were not so clever backing it out and had to remove one of the doors. MAD MEANDERINGS IN MAY// Or should it say The Wednesdays Wanderers at it again, or “From Dust to Dost” By SlipShod Speers(other half of Slasher Speers). Wednesday 4th May. Grey and overcast. Erk-who was going to take this run on? We’d heard it was organised by Crafty Cadwallader’s missus.( who shall be known as Judge Juliet henceforth.Well, she DID warn us we’d probably love her less after we’d done the run. Yes, she described “some of the run as“corrugated”. Dictionary meaning of corrugated?:”ridged,fluted,gro oved, ,channelled,furrowed,wrinkled,crink led,rumpled and creased”. Which describes most of the participants after doing the run!) About 12 of us were just standing around at the Clubrooms, yarning, before the run started, when up roared Livewire Ackerley. Skidding to a halt beside us, he alighted with a spectacular back fire(of the Model A, not him) at which his poor redfaced wife looked as though she’d rather be somewhere else. Cracking start to the day! Anyway, Judge Juliet set us off out the gate and up the road to Church Road. Slasher Speers got caught up by the coffee cart again, no sign of Basher Browne this month, and Bomber and Mrs Ball still in Melbourne,but Carryon Cocking and Fantastic Freeman were well off up ahead of us, respendant in Bomber jackets and goggles and helmets. I did admire the 11
fact that they completed the whole run in the open Austin 7, in the dust, which we presumed they would have eaten a fair bit of, but they seemed to be very chirpy at the lunch stop.And not spitting !! In the interim, as warned, there was a fair bit of dust. And Corrugations. We traversed along the Wairoa Rd to the tunrnoff to Tangoio, and there the lovely tarseal said goodbye. Oh yes, there were bits of it now and then. Along beside schools and scattered settlements. But mostly Dust. And Corrugations. It sounded like a bucket of bolts were rattling in the boot of the PT Cruiser at times.Up and over the bluff,”watch out for Logging trucks”(we saw a few but not up too close), up along the Waipunga Eskdale road, (where I swear I saw sheep with short legs on one side, which makes it easier for them to go round the hills). Spectacular scenery but chattering teeth and rattling car bits made conversation difficult, if at all impossible. It was a huge relief to get on to calm, quiet, tarsealed Hedgley Rd,then Seafield Rd., and cruise down to the lunch stop at the amazing old King George’s Hall in Bay View. There we get to the other “Dost”. Judge Juliet has been attached to this wonderful old
building for nigh on 26 years.She has trod the boards, been on the committees and can tell you a lot about how the building survived from 1911 till now,threatened by extinction,earthquake,flooding and incipient closure.After hearing her speak to us assembled at the lunch stop in one of the attached supper rooms, we went on a tour of the building, admiring the Proscenium Arch(rare nowadays), gasping at the lead-lined channel along the front of the stage, opened up for us to see by Crafty Cadwallader to show us where the 19th century “lighting” was created by rows of candles-- and buying the book that

so describes such a rare, old,much loved building. So-Dost Thou, Dame Juliet, accept our apologies for berating thee while we were out there in the Dust! As a postscript to Peerless people, this week Carryon Cocking goes to Wellington to become a Peer of the Realm-well, not quite, but getting a QSM is quite something. Well done, Bertie!(and apologies for pinching your idea!)
BACK TO YOUR ROOTS NO.6// By Graham Smith This was reprinted from The Mag when Esther was editor so apologies if you have already seen this. - Graham Smith 2022. Staying with our 1961 Series IIIB Hillman Minx for a while, but straying to an account I did some years ago for the Hawke’s Bay VCC magazine The Mag extolling the virtues of cars like the Series Minx (as opposed to the owners). My wife Esther was the editor and I wrote a rather tongue-incheek ‘Editorial Bliss’. From 2004 – ‘EDITORIAL BLISS’ “What are you contemplating Lustful? “ “Oh, just the charge of the light brigade, Madam.” “Yes, I know dear, it is absolutely scandalous how much they expect us to pay for electricity these days, especially considering the water in the rivers doesn’t cost them anything, and now they are using free wind as well.” “No. no, the heroic Charge of the Light Brigade at Sevastopol”. “Oh, you mean the Safari to Gisborne - why didn’t you say so Lustful. Heroic too, was it? “Well possibly Madam, but really they were quite different; actually the events do happen to be separated by a mere 150 years to the day.” “So what has all that to do with motoring, Dear?”
“Very little madam, although I do see it was the first war to involve railroads, steamships, nurses and reporters with cameras.” “Very interesting I am sure, Lustful, but as you still appear to have half a page blank, perhaps you could tell me more about those drivers’ cars you spoke of in June and explain just how designers of modern cars have forgotten the real driver”. “Well Madam, this is both a technical and a sensitive matter but it really needs to be told. You see in a modern car the driver and front passenger are cocooned and constrained into separate capsules and need a cell phone to communicate, but this was not always the case. You see some 50 years ago a cleaver and considerate designer came up with the idea of removing that ungainly gear leaver from the floor and placing it near the steering wheel.“ “What did that achieve, Lustful?” “It enabled that wonderfully comfortable, considerate and congenial feature to be reintroduced to motorists.” “And what was that?” “Ah! The front bench seat. Not only did it allow an extra person to sit in the front seat, but on more social occasions, one could be rather more agreeably arranged. However, there was one problem to overcome.” “What was that Lustful?” “Slippery vinyl seats with no seatbelts. You see your young lady friend was liable to slid

from one side of the car to the other on the windy back roads you frequently went. Now the young man would then grasp the steering wheel with the right hand and take a firm hold of the lady with the left.” “How thoughtful Lustful, considering all the sharp curves.” “Exactly Madam! But living in the great metropolis there was yet another obstacle that would test the real driver - tolls on the harbour bridge. However, like all true enthusiasts a technique was soon developed. It went something like this. While approaching the toll booth from the City you would steady the steering wheel with your right knee, depress the clutch with your left foot, reach over with your right arm to the column gear lever and change down to third while gently braking with the right foot toe and blipping the throttle with the right heal. Still steering with your right knee you reached into your fob pocket with your right hand for the florin, which you then placed in your left hand. You then made steering wheel corrections with your right hand so that you were lined up with the toll booth you had selected and again transferred steering to the right knee while you wound down the window with your right hand and

recovered the florin from your left still gently braking with the right foot. It was now time to change down to second gear so again you depressed the clutch, reached over with your right arm to the column gear lever and changed down while gently braking with the right foot toe and blipping the throttle with the right heal and being careful not to drop the florin. By this time you were alongside the toll booth, passed the florin to the officer who greeted you with a “Good evening Sir”, wound up the window, changed up into third and then top using the right hand and finally steered again with the right hand. Not for one moment did your left arm loosen its firm grip on your lady!” “How chivalrous Lustful!” “Yes, those were the days of the real drivers’ cars - I do think the Light Brigade would have approved” The Series IIIB Minx was certainly a drivers’ car and the technique described for paying the tolls was well mastered! More next month.
ARTICLE FROM NZ CLASSIC CAR// Alastair Chalmers enjoyed a strong debut in his Chevron B32 at Hampton Downs. (New Zealand Classic Car) May 2022 PROPITIOUS DEBUT. Earlier in the day, the categories handicap race was won by local man Tony Galbraith (Lola T332) ahead of the fastest finishing (Talons) of David Banks and Grant Martin Fourth, after grabbing an early lead off fellow front row starter Toby Annabell (McLaren M10B) on the first lap, then hanging on onto it tenaciously for the next 4 laps, was category new face - Alastair Chalmers ( Chevron B32). In 5th place was Tony Roberts, in the former Kip Ackerman (South African series) McLaren M10B leading home the similar Class A era McLaren cars of Frank Karl and Tony Annabel. Unfortunately out before the race proper even got underway, Glenn Richards, spun his Lola T400 into tyre barriers exiting the hairpin, ripping off the car's Right rear wheel in the process. Chalmers couldn't have wished for a better debut, qualifying with a conservative 1:09.425 before getting progressively quicker and quicker until he signed off with a very respectable 1:05.271 in Sundays feature final. Great effort from HBVCC Club members Alastair Chalmers and Tony Roberts.

Hawkes Bay VCC member John Cocking received his QSM from Her Excellency The Right Hon Dame Cindy Kiro on May 10th at Government House Wellington. John was accompanied by a group of family and friends to celebrate the occasion and after a High Tea and Bubbles the group were invited to a private audience with the Governor General. Congratulations again to John on his award and for the amazing work he has done in promoting Napier’s Heritage and Tourism.

I placed an add in beaded wheels a long shot for a BMW Isetta to restore,and joked if one turns up I bet it will be in Bluff, well one did turn up in Invercargill. He wouldn't sell sight unseen, so a six day drive and wella I have it at home. One complete car and enough mechanicals and chassis for at least 2 more. Happy as a pig in ------. Lyn Gentry

Hi All The swap meet was very successful considering, with just over $600 made from The Parts Store, but we didn’t get the numbers turning up so had a lot of stuff we had put aside unsold so will used for the next one, also would like to thanks all the helpers us on that day. We do get a lot of members dropping scrap off into our bin, which is very much appreciated, and added to our figures, but we can not accept wheels with tyres on them, as the tyres cost more than the scrap price to dispose of, we will accept rims but with no tyres please. Seems to be a lot of car movement this month with, B.T. and his Packard, L.G. with his Fiat 500, sold on trademe in 3 minutes, will be good to see his new project, the Messerschmitt which will be a challenge, also a rear car. I’m sure theirs others as well. Also learnt of a member buying back one of his old cars after 30 years. Until next time.

WANTED// WANTED: ROYAL ENFIELD MOTORCYCLE BITS. Indian or English, anything up to a complete derelict considered. Particularly looking for gearbox and clutch. Ideally we want a vehicle that is user friendly i e that will cruise at 95 – 100 kph as we will be using it for trips away and on daily trips out. We do not want a ‘show queen’ but something clean and tidy. Ideally it will be a coupe. It needs to be Registered and WOF. I am 73 and are past restoring vehicles but just want to drive and enjoy. I’m thinking a 1934 Chrysler, Dodge, Desoto, Plymouth coupe would be good. Possibly a Model A Ford but it would need to have period speed equipment and overdrive to attain the travel speed we need. 1932 33 34 Fords and Chevys are probably more than we want to spend. I’m aware of a ’34 Plymouth Roadster for sale on trade me which would be good but it’s a Roadster and we are both past being baked in the sun or getting wet and cold.
