Dean Packwood Welcome to another issue of Taupo Torque. I had hoped to bring you part 3 of the Packmobile Restoration, but progress has stalled a bit... I’ll have an update next month. In the meantime however, we’ve got some photos of some wonderful cars from the Chairman’s Run and the Daffodil Rally. Neil Chave, our club chairman, shares a little history of his 1963 Rover 110 and we also start a series on the history of the Taupo Vintage Car Club, compiled by Life Member Graham Mock. Chairman’s Report
Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – August 2018 By the time you receive this newsletter the Daffodil Rally for Cancer will have happened and we will be looking forward towards September and the events scheduled for that month. Also this month (August) the club will again be delivering the daffodil bunches to local businesses. Thanks to all those willing drivers and their helpers that assisted with this important fund-raising activity for the local Cancer Society branch. During the month we held the annual ‘Fish & Chips Quiz Night’ and this year we had Chris Smith as our quiz master. Chris entertained us with a wide range of questions as well as some mystery recordings to add to the list. The fish & chips were pretty hot and well received and it was a fun night with as expected a great turnout of members.

We also in August had the Chairman’s Run to Tihoi Tavern over in the Western Bays. Fortunately, we were treated to a fine sunny day for a leisurely drive to the tavern where an enjoyable lunch was arranged for the 40 or so that came along. The run also allowed members to see some interesting club cars for the first time with Barry Hoffman in his Porsche 356 and Hugh Wake in his recently restored Mercedes 230 convertible. Nice to see some of our new members including Peter Lockie in his Volkswagen Kombi Westfalia. With better weather on the way and spring just around the corner – now is the time to get the dust off your car and give it a run. On the weekend of August 5th, I attended the national VCC AGM in Napier. I attended as the club delegate with Tony Mannington & Kelvin Trim as observers. I have prepared a brief report to club members on some of the key issues and highlights in the newsletter. It is important to note the commitment that the management committee provides to the efficient & professional operation of the club as well as the hard work the staff at the national office provide. As we now seem to be rushing towards the last months of 2018, we are planning for the 2019 Taupo Rally, and we would like you to join our committee to help with the organisation. For next year’s rally we will need a rally director & rally secretary. These roles are not onerous and the committee shares much of the planning as well as the operational component of organising the rally so if you would like to offer yourself for one of these positions or join the organising committee then we will be having our first meeting on September 18th 5.00PM at the club rooms. If we cannot get a committee together, then it is likely there will be no rally in March, so your support is vital. In September the club night, Wednesday 12th September, will be a presentation from ‘Computers at Work’ on computers – how to use them and more importantly computer security. With loads of scams arriving in our emails, we need to be well informed as to how to deal with them. Steven Fox from this local Taupo company will be there to answer our questions. Also in September on Sunday 16th is the ‘Breakfast Run’ where you get to do the driving & the committee gets to do the cooking. The run will leave the Taupo Library at 9.00AM ‘sharp’ and go on a short drive around Taupo to arrive at the club rooms at about 10.00AM for brunch. It’s $5.00 pp so bring your car and some cash and enjoy a full brunch. Neil Chave

Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report – September 2018 Earlier this year the North Island Wolseley Car Club requested the use of our Clubrooms for their AGM on August the 4th and also asked the committee would they be prepared to cater for morning tea and lunch. While Neil, Kelvin and myself were attending the National AGM (more from Neil on page 11) at Napier on the 4th, Maureen our Treasurer/Committee Member along with Club members Pam and Jan agreed to make scones and cake for morning tea and Hot soup, sandwiches and others goodies for them at the Clubrooms. Thanks again to Maureen, Pam and Jan for looking after this fundraiser, and adding a good profit to the Club funds. Yes, the rumours are true that the Taupo VCC had a very successful impromptu breakfast with 20 members meeting at The Coffee Club on the first Sunday of the month, August. This is an event that Owen Duncan has put in place to encourage more member to get out and about on the first Sunday of each month over breakfast or just a coffee. Club Captain’s Tour over the Gentle Annie has now 14 cars. We will send out an update tour program when Pam and I return back to Taupo in September. Still trying to sort out Sunday, a day of interesting sites. Thanks to all, for the support and attending our always successful Fish & Chip/ Quiz Night. Great F&C, well I liked them. Chris, you did a wonderful job with the quiz questions, a little bit of this and a little of that. Music questions went down well and good feedback from the members, so Chris looks like you have got yourself a job for next year. I might sound like a broken record but we need help for our 2019 Rally otherwise our Rally may have to be put on hold for the year 2019. I am writing this Report early (Friday the 10th August) as we head off to Auckland in the morning to fly to Italy and France for four weeks.) Can’t wait to get some sunny weather. Highlights from the VCC AGM Over the weekend of 4/5th August the VCC National body held the AGM in Napier. I attended as the branch delegate for Taupo and Tony Mannington with Kelvin Trim attended as observers. On the Friday evening the Executive Meeting followed by the formal AGM on the Saturday was held and a number of issues discussed including • It was decided that a status-quo budget for 2018/9 would be agreed to with no substantial increases in expenditure however there will be an increase of $5 in subs to ensure the national body does not need to use its reserves to operate. • There was recently a vote by all members on the ’30 – year’ rule for determining the eligibility of VCC cars. This was carried. • There was a presentation by the organisers of the 2021 New Plymouth Rally. This one is planned to be quite different and will have more opt in/opt out driving activities with only a limited amount of competitive ‘rallying’. This next rally will be more like the Americana event that also takes place in New Plymouth each year. • There was a presentation by Mark Holden who ids the VCC Marketing Officer. There is a lot of work going in to promote the VCC and the branches through the websites and social media. • Rod Brayshaw – the Registrar- outlined some of the happenings with historic cars in other countries. Many other countries simply bunch historic cars with ‘Old Cars’ and don’t see the distinction so every effort is being made to ensure we can continue to use our cars as and when we choose. Some countries are now banning use of 30 year old cars on the roads and others are severely restricting use. • Other presentations included the ongoing request to the NZTA to allow us to also have 12 month WOF’s – however there is no plan to change this at present. • Beaded Wheels also provided an update and most are happy with the changes to the magazine’s presentation & layout. • There was also a presentation from the VCC Archivist and if you are in Christchurch it’s worth going to the VCC office to have a look – phone first to check it’s open. Rover’s Return
Neil Chave shares a little history about his 1963 Rover 110.

We acquired our Rover 110 some 27 years ago from Auckland where it had been living on a farm in Swanson. The car started its life in 1963 in Dunedin being sold by the local Rover dealer to its first owner in Mosgiel. It then went to Cromwell for many years and was owned by a farmer at Ripponvale who could not drive. Seems he & his son traveled to Dunedin on the bus and the son drove it back then taught his father how to drive. Later it went to Auckland and had 3 owners and was an active Auckland Rover club car.

The car has the distinction of being the last car built in 1963 that was the final right-hand drive export model, and the ‘Heritage Certificate’ confirms this. In 1991 when we bought it although in good condition with only 67,000 original miles the car was ‘tired’ and over a few years was slowly brought back to somewhere near its early glory. The suspension was rebuilt with new bushes etc. with the springs re-tempered to eliminate the rear end ‘sag’ leaf springs usually succumb to. New original Wilton carpets were made using the old set as a pattern and the leather restored. At the same time, the head was removed to replace a burnt valve, and new valve seals (vital on an IOE engine) were replaced. The prop shaft was balanced as the car had a vibration at 100KPH. In later years the woodwork was re-varnished in 2-pack, bumpers re-chromed and stainless finishers polished. About 15 years ago the top half of the car was re-sprayed in the original ‘steel gray,’ and just 2 years ago the bottom half was also repainted in ‘light navy.’ The Rover 110 was the last of the P4 models that were launched by Rover in 1948 – many will recall the ‘Cyclops’ model with the third (passing) lamp centred in the grille as the first version of the P4 and the P4 range carried on to early 1964. Rover had launched the P6 ‘Rover 2000’ a year earlier but wanted to ensure their ‘traditional’ customers would buy this new 2000 model before ending production

of the P4. When the P4 production was ended the assembly moved to Land Rover production as demand for these 4WD vehicles was booming. The final years of production had two P4 cars in the range with the 110 having the ‘Westlake’ head which increased power by 10% to 123HP as well as featuring a Laycock-de Normanville overdrive. The electric overdrive makes highway travel much more comfortable with the engine turning over at only 2,600 rpm at 100KPH. The other model – the 95 had to do with a slightly lower powered engine and no overdrive but to compensate the final drive ratio was slightly higher. The 110’s were all built up cars from the Solihull factory in the UK. There was never any local assembly of Rovers until the P6 models, and these were built by NZMC in Nelson (although some very early Rovers were briefly built in Petone just before the Great Depression). The 110 features disc brakes on the front so driving and stopping in traffic is not too much an issue. The P4’s are a little slow off the mark but once moving are stable and relatively quiet since in their day they were an expensive car. Even more expensive than a MK11 Jaguar! It is with pleasure that I join with others in writing for this history of the Vintage Car Club of Taupo.

Phil Andrews and Graham Mock got together and at Phil’s suggestion, put an advert in the paper to gauge the support for forming a Taupo branch of the VCC NZ. It was obvious from a meeting at Phil and Fay’s home on 5th July 1967 with 21 enthusiasts present and 11 apologies that this was sufficient encouragement for them to write to the VCC NZ with a proposal to form a Branch in Taupo. They then attended the Annual Meeting of the Vintage Car Club in Christchurch on the 5th of August 1967 to gain acceptance. Cautious approval was given subject to the proposed boundaries being accepted by the Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay and Manawatu Branches. This was obtained, and the Taupo Branch was constituted at a Public Meeting in Taupo on 9th September 1967.

The Minutes from that meeting record the attendance of Graham Mock, Phil Andrews and Jack Hindess, three of the resident members of the VCC, plus Anne & Roly Goodson, Bruce Carrard, Roy Stewart, Ollie Twist, Jim Vernon, Neil Hapgood, Bill Quirke, Bernie O’Brien, Dennis Amor, Keith Booth, Les Hayter and Mr. Wiley. There were six apologies and two guests, Ken Wright, Club Captain of the Vintage Car Club of NZ and Bob Hunter.

Jack Hindess – His Story It would have been in 1955 when I first experienced the lure of the Vintage Car movement, attending as a spectator, a rally of the Canterbury Branch of the VCC NZ at Riccarton Bush – or as I knew it then Dean’s Bush, with some friends, one of which was fortunate to own a Fiat Topilino. Parking at the event was fairly heavy as in those days kerbside parking was the only option, off-street parking was in its infancy. We were lucky enough to find a gap between two vehicles wide enough to allow us to reverse the Topilno at right angles or square off the curb line without impeding the passing traffic. A Traffic Officer at the time could not fault this parking technique.
As with most young men, it was an ambition to own a vehicle and in my case, it was a 1928 Durant. This was a six-cylinder model Sedan that was extremely thirsty and it was not long after gaining this acquisition that Arnold Nordmeyer presented his 1957 Black Budget, putting up the tax on a number of discretionary items that included petrol. This was the end of my association with the Durant because I simply could not afford to run it. History may have vindicated the Black Budget but in my case, I have never forgiven nor forgotten the imposition it had on my particular situation. Some years later I attended a static display run by the Waikato Branch VCC NZ and my interest in the Vintage movement was rekindled. In 1966 and now living in Taupo, I acquired a 1928 Austin Chummy. Phil Andrews – A Thumbnail Sketch Phil’s love affair with cars (his words) has lasted a lifetime. It possibly began when his grandfather, an engineer, made him a pedal car that was the envy of his friends. His first real car was a 1929 Austin 7 bought for 25 pounds ($50). This was followed by a succession of Rileys and Austins. Also at this time Phil was into Speedboat racing and was a foundation member of the Manawatu Boating Club from 1939. In 1941 Phil started work in his father’s business Motor Lines Ltd., as a storeman. The business was set up preWWII to import automotive products and after the war was successful in picking up the N Z sole agency for Alvis cars which it held until the demise of Alvis in 1967. On the death of his father in 1957, Phil took over the role of Managing Director and the following year formed Andrews Motors Ltd., a retail motor company with new premises in Palmerston North—the two companies being run in conjunction with each other.
So much for his business activities. In 1946 Phil was a founder member of the Manawatu Car Club and so commenced his passion for founding motoring clubs. He was very much involved in rallies, hill climbs, and speed events and was on the original committee to organise the Ohakea Motor Races in the early 1950s. His greatest claim to racing fame was when he won the Saloon Car Race in 1952. This brings us to Phil’s interest in Vintage Cars. His first such car was a 1922 Alvis 12/40, purchased in excellent condition for 60 pounds ($120). This car recently changed hands for $55,000.00. His next Alvis was a 1937 speed 25. In 1952 the Alvis DB 21 Sports, that Phil brought to Taupo in 1966, arrived in Wellington with just 12 miles on the clock. This car will be the subject of a separate story. Returning to true vintage cars in 1964 Phil restored a 1928 Chevrolet National Sedan and he rallied that very successfully on the 1965 Haast Rally. It never missed a beat and they finished 2nd in class and 4th overall. At this time he also owned a Fiat 501 and a 1924 Lea Francis Doctors Coupe plus a Riley Continental—none of which could match the Chevrolets reliability. SEPTEMBER 2018

We now come to 1966. Phil sold up in Palmerston North and moved to Taupo bringing just the 1952 Alvis and the 1928 Chevrolet. Once settled in Taupo Phil didn’t take long to find other motoring enthusiasts. Meeting June and Graham Mock was a real bonus—their enthusiasm matched Phil and Fay’s and it was not long before an interest meeting was called and the rest is the continuing history of the Taupo Branch of VCCNZ.
modern vintage motoring, the Perry and the Alvis were sold and Wolseley came into the picture. In 1992 Phil formed the BOP Branch of the Wolseley Club, is a founder member of the British Cars BOP and was the prime mover for the founding of the NZ Federation of Motoring Clubs. We are indebted to Phil’s vision and ability to promote, foster and influence the motoring pleasure of thousands of motoring enthusiasts in New Zealand.
Following the Inaugural Rally in 1968, where Watty Watkinson rallied the 1916 Perry for his first run to Taupo. Watty then swapped it for Phil’s Chevrolet and Phil and Fay rallied in the Perry and the Alvis in and from Taupo for many years.

For 2019 the main rally is again on Friday and we plan to have a 3 or 4 hour run plus a picnic lunch at an historic Hawkes Bay homestead. The Daffodil Rally - photos The Daffodil Rally for the Cancer Society was a great success, and there was a wonderful turnout on the day. With a clear sunny day, plenty of open-tops came out for the run. The run started at the Taupo VCC club rooms and ended out by the lake in Kinloch.

The 356 originated as a coupé only 1948-1955. Over time a variety of other styles appeared, including roadster, convertible, cabriolet, and a very rare split-roof. One of the most desirable collector models is the 356 “Speedster”, introduced in late 1954 after Max Hoffman advised the company that a lower-cost, somewhat spartan open-top version could sell well in the American market. With its low, raked windscreen (which could be removed for weekend racing), bucket seats and minimal folding top, the Speedster was an instant hit, especially in Southern California. It was replaced in late 1958 by the “convertible D” model. It featured a taller, more practical windshield (allowing improved headroom with the top erected), roll-up glass side-windows and more comfortable seats.

VCC Car Torque Breakfast As an attendee of the now defunct ‘Petrolhead’ breakfast and the fact that Dixie Brown’s restaurant is extremely busy I thought it was time for a change. In consultation with a few of our members and at short notice I organised a VCC breakfast on the first Sunday of this month. It was very successful, so we thought we would trial this on a regular basis. The Coffee Club on Lake Terrace has agreed to book us a table on the first Sunday of every month, with an option of purchasing a full breakfast from their menu or a $10 special of either ham, cheese and tomato omelette; eggs, tomato and toast (poached or scrambled); breakfast brioche burger or pancakes with banana, popcorn and maple syrup. The start time is 9am but they do ask us to be aware that at 10am they start getting very busy as the motels empty out. This is a chance for our members to interact, chat about their projects, get ideas of where to go for help, or generally chinwag and make new friends. It also gives us the rest of the day to do the chores, mow the lawns or go for a drive. We are also looking at opening the parts shed at the club rooms afterwards from time to time. This will give the men a chance to rat around and find some treasures and the girls to make a cuppa or get in some retail therapy. As this is the same weekend as the new Taupo Car Jam get together we can still join their cars and park in the grass area between Roberts Street and Lake Terrace - weather permitting. Everyone, and anyone is welcome to come along. If you’re interested in attending please let me know on 07 378 8327 or 0274 482 484, so I can ensure there’s plenty of seating set aside.
