Dean Packwood Summer’s coming and it’s time for an old school Turkey Shoot! Well, no actual Turkeys will be harmed, but while the ladies having a creative art night with Maggie Dawson at Studio 92, the guys will be getting together on the 14th November, 5pm-7pm (venue TBA) to the smell of gunpowder and musket ball grease. A chance to fire some vintage guns! Cost will be $10 for those that want to shoot, spectators free. Please send me an email (editor@taupovcc.org) by the 10th if you’re interested and I will confirm venue prior to event. If the weather turns to custard, we’ll meet at the clubrooms for a casual night instead. We will be meeting up with the ladies for dinner at the clubrooms, $10 per head BYO drinks. November Club Day Combined Run Sunday 18th November 2018 This run will be a Combined activity/run for Branches in the region. We will travel from Taupo to Rotorua leaving our Clubrooms at 9.45am and will be meeting the other Clubs a the Te Amorangi Steam Museum at Holdens Bay Rotorua. Information: • There will be an entry charge to visit the Museum. • The museum is about 1km down this road. The carpark is behind the museum and access if via a driveway just before the museum as per photo below. • Parking all on grass. There is also a vacant property to the right of the driveway with a small brown bach on it, and we can also park on that large lawn. • Entry is $10pp (max $20 per car if more than 2 in car). • The museum will have all their steam machinery operating, including their large steam engine. • BYO chairs and mats for lunch, there is only limited indoor or covered seating available. Rotorua branch will be supplied complimentary tea at coffee at the venue, but all else is BYO for lunch. In the event weather is really bad, we will travel to the VCC clubrooms for lunch. I believe that Rotorua Museum are hosting a special visit of a Sculpture Park in Tikitere, just north of the museum at 3pm on the same day, details in the link below, some of your members may want to make a really big day of it and add this to their journey home. This allows you to print 2 pages up on an A4 or even a booklet if your printer supports it. If you open the magazine file in Acrobat Reader, and select file>print, under Page Size and Handling (see image below), you can print multiple pages per sheet. Click File>Print>Multiple>Pages per sheet> 2 If your printer supports printing both sides of the paper, you can also print a ‘Booklet’. Which allows you to print, then staple and fold up into an A5 magazine.

Chairman’s Report

Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – November 2018 As reported in the October newsletter the club was again supporting the annual Daffodil Day appeal with the delivery of fresh daffodils to local Taupo businesses and thanks to all that arrived to help out with this. Our club night was a presentation by one of our local police – Constable Barry Shepherd about his work with both Search & Rescue and in many countries supporting local communities after a disaster such as the downing of the Malaysian flight over the Ukraine, the Australian bushfires and many other international incidents. Barry is a very experienced investigator and has over the years received a number of awards for his work. Our monthly club run is the Captain’s Run over the ‘Gentle Annie’ to Hawkes Bay, and it’s great to see such a large number of members joining in for this event. Tony will cover this in more details after the event held late in October. Planning for the Club’s Annual Rally – March 2019 is well underway, and the committee is to meet again later in October to keep the momentum going with the planning. At this stage, we have a committee to cover most of the aspects of this event which as has been already mentioned may well include other clubs involved with the North Island Club Captain’s Tour. Again if you would like to come along to the rally planning committee meeting – please let us know as you will be most welcome! As a final note again our club rooms has been the victim of theft with the Rinnai Infiniti water heater stolen from the front of the building so at present we have no hot water. The police have of course been advised, and Tony is organising a replacement, and we shall be looking at ways & means to burglar-proof the replacement. Neil Chave

Club Captain’s Report

Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report – November 2018 Due to family commitments, I was not able to attend the October Club Night. Sounds like I missed a great night. Barry Shepherd was talking on Search and Rescue missions around the world. Thanks to Owen and Heather for asking Barry along for the guest speaker duties. As Neil said October has been quiet, but the storm is about to “Hit.” Because of Labour Weekend, we put our Club Captain Tour over the Gentle Annie forward one week so our report for the weekend will appear in the November newsletter. We are all fuelled up, lunch boxes packed with 16 cars, drivers and navigators ready to go and we will be leaving the Clubrooms in groups from 8.00am Saturday morning. The newsletter will properly miss our departure. Looking forward to the Novembers “Big Hits” is our special night for The Ladies to enjoy themselves without hearing about broken clutches or gearboxes. Pam and Maureen have arranged an evening with Maggie Dawson at Studio 92. Art Experience from 5pm until 7:30pm. Cost $15.00 per person and limited to 15 ladies. We are arranging a dinner at the clubrooms afterwards, where the men can meet up after their evening at the shooting range (weather permitting) and have dinner together at 7.45pm. Please, we need to know numbers so arrangements can be put in place. We are committed to Maggie for the ladies, who will then join us at the Clubrooms for dinner.

MGB 01 from Cairns, Australia to Taupo, New Zealand by Chris Smith Chris Smith shares about the acquisition of his MGB 01

My MGB has had 2 known owners first in the UK & then 2 in Australia. Back in 1986 whilst living in Cairns Australia, I decided to sell my Kawasaki 750 motorbike cruiser as it was too hot to wear protective gear & riding using jandals was not a good look. Even worse fun in the wet season so what sort of sports car should I get to replace it? An MGB convertible fitted

the requirements, good looking, fun to drive, easy to maintain, parts were easy to get & most important a roof for very hot sunny days. (Every day in the dry season) The search to find a good MGB: I contacted The “House of MG” in Brisbane giving them a $200 search fee. Instructions were I wanted a British Racing Green MGB convertible, not a yellow one please. Many months later they called to say they had found the perfect 1972 MGB, an original condition chrome bumper, overdrive model and were so confident they had confirmed the sale for me. But the only bad news was it was Harvest gold (yellow to me) and bad luck I had to take it. Onto the truck and up to Cairns it went. 1988 and I got a job with Air NZ, luckily my contract with my old employer Air Niugini included freighting my car back to NZ so into the hold of an Air NZ 767 went the MG. No importing issues & it was driven home from the airport. A bonus with my new job meant every time I arrived at Heathrow airport I was only a few bus stops from Moss Motors for any small parts I needed & no baggage limit to carry them home. Now in NZ the MG needed rego & personalized number plates had started, MGB01 was available, I bought it. Luckily nothing else was needed to comply. The Auckland MG car club were happy to have me return, as back in the 70’s I had a MGTF 1250. (I should have kept it but sold it to pay for my ticket to go to Papua New Guinea to look for a flying job). Sadly my new job with Air NZ of mainly long haul gave little time for club rally’s, but my retirement 2 years ago & a move to Taupo gave the MGB a reason to get on the road again. We joined the Taupo Vintage Car Club, a great bunch of members & went on a rally. The photo is of the ignominious sad end of the very first rally on the back of a tow truck. The hydraulics failed. Since 1986 it has had only had 3 repairs, a clutch, the hydraulic failure & replacement of the front shocks. Hopefully no more for a while. Not bad for an old girl of 1972 and only 65000 miles on the clock (genuine to the best of my knowledge). The engine is original and is running with the controversial fuel star installed in the fuel line to replace leaded fuel. Garth Bagnall in Auckland installed it 25 years ago & it seems to work despite all the tests that say it is a waste of money. MGB’s were made from 1962 to 1980 with 500,000 produced.

History of the Taupo Vintage Car Club - Part Three

It is with pleasure that I join with others in writing for this history of the Vintage Car Club of Taupo.

My interest in Vintage Cars led me to belong to the Manawatu Branch in the 1970’s. My first restoration was a 1922 Wolesley 15 Tourer. In it’s life it had been a car, truck, tractor and finally a hen house complete with 16 eggs when recovered. It took three years to bring it back to it’s original condition. The second project was a 1914 Royal Enfield Motor Cycle, found in a dismantled state in a Woodville barn. The purchase deal called for it to be restored within a year to take part in the Woodville Centenary Parade. This was achieved and the proud original owner led the parade on it - then the bike was mine. Next project was a 1925 Chrysler 4 Roadster. This sadly neglected vehicle lay in a shed that had collapsed on top of it. After agreeing to build the owner a new trailer the deal was sealed and the Chrysler had a new home. Another three year restoration project. In 1983 the family moved to Taupo along with these three Vintage vehicles

plus a replica Stirling Boneshaker Push Bike that I built from a photograph. A transfer from the Manawatu Branch to Taupo Branch was effected and straightaway my involvement with this Branch was warmly welcomed. Taupo had no club rooms of their own and my first memory is meeting in the Cosmopolitan Club. The Chairman, Ron Clerke agreed to purchase a works shed to be placed at the A C Reserve. This soon became outgrown so the hunt was on for a bigger building. Tom Biggar and myself negotiated a deal with the Tauhara Rugby Club for their unused premises for a grand fee of $1,000.00. A club project took place to unite these two buildings and since then further extensions have been added to more than treble the size. During this period I obtained a very neglected 1935 B S A Sedan Car. This was another ground up restoration and was completed in time to take it to the 50th Anniversary Rally of the VCC NZ in Christchurch. Having always wanted an Austin 7, I at last found most of one in Palmerston North. Having now completed the restoration of this car in 2007 we now intend this to be our Rally car. Over the last 24 years Beryl and I have many happy memories of both local runs and National Rallies that we have helped to organise or take part in. We have especially enjoyed the projects, club nights and fellowship of the Taupo Branch of the VCC NZ.

21st International Rally 1980 saw the 21st International Rally in Rotorua and Taupo Branch was again fully involved. Graham Mock was appointed route controller for the Taupo section and responsible for the day run for all entrants from Rotorua via forestry roads between the Blue and Green Lakes, SH5 and Broadlands Road to Taupo. There were five groups totaling 1060 entries and over the 5 days each of these groups were parked adjacent to the Memorial Hall in the centre of town at lunch time. This created a spectacular display for all to appreciate. The whole branch was involved in marshalling with our ladies in particular providing suitable refreshments for the entrants.

First Club Rooms 1983 was a significant year in the Branch history. Ron Clerke the then chairman enthused the committee to obtain a builders shed for use as a clubrooms. In 2007 that shed is part of toilet block of the existing clubrooms. This facility gave the branch a higher profile within the community being sited on the A. C. Reserve renamed Hickling Park; a recreation area set aside by the Borough Council for kindred groups. Many members have joined the Club or just passed through Taupo Branch over the years. As a predominantly tourist town with an ever changing population, we have come to accept this as a fact of life and have exploited the enthusiasm of all who have been willing to give. Tribute must be expressed to the Manawatu Branch members who have moved to Taupo and contributed so much. The first Brass Monkey Run took place and is still firmly established on the Branch annual calendar of events.

Kuratau Run 1986 The October run to Kuratau was well attended and it was nice to see so many open cars heralding the beginnings of summer and that all the cars with tourer tops had them down for the day. Laurie and Colleen Tyler had their debut in the A.J. S. and sidecar combination. From all accounts they had a trouble free journey in spite of Colleen’s misgivings about the steep grade on the Hatepe hill. Brian Grace also made his debut in his very nicely restored M.G. ‘TF”. The run was purely social and it was free of mechanical mishaps. We took off from the clubrooms and made our way south down the eastern lakeshore. stopping briefly at Tauranga - Taupo to meet up with Frank and Kath Kernohan who decided to bring the 12/4 out for the day. We proceeded on to Turangi where Sandra Frame flagged us down and gave us directions to Kuratau. Tony had gone on to light the barbecue, which was immediately put into use when everyone arrived. They provided us with a variety of salads, fresh bread rolls and a very pleasant venue to enjoy the first barbecue of the year. After lunch a pleasant walk down to the Kuratau river mouth and then along the lakeshore. The return journey followed the same route and we again stopped at the Kernohans - this time to enjoy a very nice afternoon tea. All in all a very relaxed outing. Our thanks to Sandra and Tony for the lunch and Kath & Frank for the afternoon tea.

1st Pan Pacific Rally 1986 was the first Pan Pacific. Taupo members who participated were Ron Anderson, Jack Hindess 1939 Fiat Topilino, Colin Wallace 1936 Chevrolet. The Pan Pacific Rally is so named because Lord Montague when in Rotorua for the 21st International Rally in 1980 was horrified to see 1200 so called Vintage Cars assembled in one venue. Being concerned that it would downgrade the exclusiveness of the International prestige of the Vintage Car movement his comment was instrumental in the decision by the VCCNZ to adopt the name Pan Pacific for future Rally’s so as not to offend the International body.

Harold Watkins’ Story My involvement with old cars began after my retirement in 1982. After getting house alterations done to include a five car garage—what else? - Although I was NOVEMBER 2018

not a member of the Vintage Car Club I had been taking â€˜Beaded Wheelsâ€™ for some time with a view to sorting out a vehicle. What was wanted was a Dodge or Chrysler of around 1928-30 vintage. In mid 1986 a 1928 Dodge Victory 6 (six cylinders) Coupe was for sale in Tauranga, dismantled but all there. Ron Anderson and I had a look at it and decided that it was worth restoring so we struck a deal. So began 18 months of almost fulltime work, as everything but the back axle had been dismantled ten years before and it had survived a shift from Wellington, so there was a lot of sorting out to do. After the usual panel work, plating, engine reconditioning, fitting new wheels and front bumper it was starting to look like a car. Fortunately the original paint colour was uncovered inside and was able to be matched up by the local paint shop. Our first outing was the 21st Rally of the Taupo Branch and later that year we went on The Far North Tour starting from Whangarei. Since then we have been back up north several times and to most major rallies in the North Island as well as a 3,000 mile tour of the South Island that included the 1996 50th Anniversary Rally of the VCC NZ. The only problems we had was a blocked vacuum tank and a tyre blow out due to a split rim. We sold the car in 1999 because of lack of space when we shifted house, thus ending eleven years of enjoyable and trouble free vintage motoring. In 1990 while on holiday in New Plymouth I found a 1937 D5 Dodge partially restored, this was the longer wheelbase model which is the more desirable version. After towing it home it was found to require more work than originally thought, so the body came off, the engine came out and a complete restoration started. When it was finished it became a great touring car and for many years was used for events around the North Island Unfortunately it had to go when we again shifted house. I currently own a 1965 Sunbeam Series IV Rapier. This is catered for in VCC NZ events and also doubles as a second car and fits along with the modern in our two car garage.

100 Years of Motoring Rally The 100 Years of Motoring Rally passed through Taupo on their journey through the country in 1986. We visited with them on their overnight stay at the Wairakei Resort.

Peter Attwood Returns as Chairman Peter Attwood went back in as Chairman in 87-8889 charged with celebrating the 21st Anniversary in fitting style. It was Tom & Bronwen Biggars enthusiasm and network of friends including Joe & Beryl Ridley that set in motion the framework for the biggest Rally ever of the Taupo Branch. The planning started in 1986.

The phone rings in Graham Mock’s office—”Hello its Bob (Pettigrew) next weekend is the long weekend (Auckland Anniversary) and there is not much happening in Taupo. What say we arrange a Vintage Motor Show? “Sure Why Not!” was the reply. It just so happened that Tom Vincent had just covered in a large commercial building in Nukuhau Street. How could he say No to a club fund raising venture? He couldn’t! In four days we had organised 25 cars , mostly local but not necessarily club members’ cars to display, plus sign writing, advertising, pricing at $2 adults, $5 for the whole family, volunteers to take the money and supervisors to keep sticky fingers off the cars. It was a great success and sadly there is not one mention in the Newsletter or the Branch Minutes that it even took place. My only reference, other than our memories - Jack Hindess for one, remembers sleeping on the premises for security purposes, is the (Free) Newspaper advertisement on the front page of the ‘Driver’ part of the Taupo Weekender Jan 30th 1988 “Show opens 21st Year for Vintage Car Club” with the details of time, cost and venue. The feature car was Bob Taylor’s 1905 Reo from Hamilton. Lloyd Cotton’s 1929 Packard created a lot of favourable comment. This show was a good commercial success and the forerunner of many more to come. NOVEMBER 2018

21st Birthday Rally In March 1988 the 21st Birthday Rally was held and thanks to Tom & Bronwen Biggars' abilities this was a resounding success with 101 entries. This Rally put Taupo Branch back on the National Calendar of Events of the VCC NZ. Previously a so called Picnic Run was held in February each year and was, in earlier years, on the National Calendar but due to clashes with other Branches it was allowed to drop off and become just a Sunday Club Run. The Taupo Branch Emblem was designed by Jim Montgomery of the Northland Branch who was a regular participant in our Taupo events in the 1980-90s. The 21st Logo includes Jack Hindessâ€™ Fiat Topilino, the actual badge that is used as the Rally Plaque and the Branch Pin features the lake as the central theme. Special Invitation From HBVCC A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM HBVCC TO OWNERS OF CLUB ELIGIBLE COMMERCIAL VEHICLES 2019 IS THE YEAR OF THE COMMERCIAL For the first time ever Commercial Vehicles will be the Featured Marque for 2019. Come to Napier and join the HBVCC for Art Deco Weekend 2019 from February 14th -17th. Kindly sponsored again this year by Euro City Ltd. 45000 people attended ADW in 2018. The Grand Parade on the Saturday will be limited to pre 1946 vehicles with a wheelbase of 160” or less. No tractors or trailers allowed. A weight limit of 3 tons will also apply. Here is your chance to show off that great Commercial vehicle along with Commercials from the Bill Richardson Transport Museum. We suggest you plan to arrive in Napier on Wednesday 13th Feb so you can participate in a special run for just the Commercials on the Thursday ending up at Off the Track restaurant for lunch. Attend our Valentine’s Dinner at the HBVCC Clubrooms that evening. Prizes for best dressed COUPLES this year. For 2019 the main rally is again on Friday and we plan to have a 3 or 4 hour run plus a picnic lunch at an historic Hawkes Bay homestead.
