Chairman’s Report

Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – April 2020 It’s hard to believe that in such a short time, our lives have changed. It was only a couple of weeks ago the club ran a very successful rally with nearly 80 coming to our rally dinner at the clubrooms. If this rally was scheduled for a week later we would have had to cancel. All members will have received the information from our national president Diane Quarrie, as well as the Taupo club, that all events local and national are cancelled. We will reassess at the end of June to decide what future steps might take place from that date. The clubrooms will remain empty until that time, with some committee members checking in from time to time to ensure the building remains secure. We will be continuing to produce and distribute our monthly newsletter, and we hope this will help members keep up to date on any changes to the club’s position. As mentioned in my message to you, we may be able to arrange runs provided members do not socialize, but this will depend on whether the current crisis worsens, and we move to Level 3. In the meantime, we trust everyone can take extra care as we work through this pandemic and keep well. Again if any member needs help, please contact any of our committee members. Neil Chave

Club Captain’s Report

Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report – April 2020 “Be Positive, Stay Strong” You would have all read Neil’s report, and it is with heavy hearts that we have put “ALL” Club activities on hold until the 1st of July. We will review the situation and keep all members up to date. Dean will continue with our newsletter (Thank you, Dean) so that our members are kept well informed. Please, if you have interesting information you wish to share, please forward it to Dean (editor@taupovcc.org). This year’s Rally Pam and I took a step back and helped where required. Our plan has always been to participate in the Rally, and this was going to be our year. Our very capable Chairman Neil took on the role of Rally Chairman, and Murray took on the role of Rally Course Plotter. Murray delivered a great opportunity for Rally Entrants to test their skills at Navigation, cryptic questions, speed section, and some silent checks. With every VCC class represented, a total of 37 cars, the markers managed to find the winners of each class. Thanks to our major sponsor, Kirk Automotive, also all other sponsors that provided an excellent selection of prizes, we were able to provide 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes per category. Taking part, as a rally entrant, was certainly a different experience for me rather than being involved with its organization. I have been part of the Plotters group over the last four years, Murray managed to find roads that we hadn’t traveled on before. We certainly enjoyed being part as a competitor, and at the end of the day, I didn’t manage to take away any prizes. Taking wrong turns doesn’t help, but all APRIL 2020

part of the fun. The Ngakuru School PTA, at the Whirinaki Valley Hall, providing a wonderful lunch, one comment “best lunch ever!!” Feedback I received was very positive, and we put it down to Murray’s setting this VCC Rally. Copy of the Rally results in this mag on “Country Roads 2020 Rally Results” on page 19. As I write my report, the NZ Government, (due to the Covid-19 pandemic) has announced we go to level 3 and in 48 hrs to level 4. By the time you get this newsletter, level 4 will apply, and we will all be in lockdown. Please look after yourself, and if you require assistance, please don’t forget to make contact with your family and friends for a chat. A big percentage of our members are over the 70+ group, and this creates problems as we are urged to stay in lockdown in our homes. If you need to have a chat or need supplies, let us know, we may be able to help. I will finish off with a motto that NZ Plumbers adopted in 1902: “Salus Populi Suprema Lex” The Health of the People is Supreme. Cheers, Tony

Eulogy of Norman A. Pointon

25 March 1933 - 14 March 2020

Norman was a lifelong enthusiast of Taupo, it’s Lake and environs. He holidayed in Taupo as a teenager and on graduating commenced teaching parttime at Taupo High School in the 1950’s. In 1960 he and Jocelyn moved to Taupo, and his teaching career progressed at the now known as Taupo-nui-a-Tia College, and in the 1970’s he became Dean of the Senior school and Deputy Principal. In 1979 he was appointed Principal of the new Tauhara College as it was being built and was responsible for the completion of the buildings and landscaping plus the fittings required for it to function. As a predominately Maori collective area, his foresight for their culture resulted in the first School Marae complete with a Whare Kai and traditional Meeting House capable of sleeping up to 80 inhabitants. This was the first such complex funded by the Education Department in New Zealand. APRIL 2020

Such was his negotiating skills and capabilities that we were to enjoy in his lifetime hobby of Vintage Cars. Norm joined the Riley Car Club in 1974 and settled on two outstanding models of Riley Sports cars, which he restored to perfection a 1935 Kestrel Sport and a 1951 RMB 2.5 litre Saloon. Norm rallied extensively with the Riley Club and was a stalwart of this club. In 1994 he was a founder member of the Federation of Motoring Clubs, which was formed in our clubrooms in Taupo, and he joined our club. He has been an executive member of the federation since that time, and thanks to his ability and enthusiasm was invited to join the NZ Vintage Car Club Technical Committee in 2006. This committeeâ€™s job is to liaise with the appropriate Governmental authorities charged with the administration of all vehicles over the age of 40 years. It is thanks

to Norm and this committee that we still have unrestricted use of all roads within New Zealand for our old cars. To get back to Normâ€™s involvement at our branch at a local level, he was elected Chairman in 2006 and continued in this office for five years. Under his direction, the final building phase of our clubrooms was completed. The kitchen was doubled in size and fully equipped to the satisfaction of our lady members. A library room was also included to give us a very impressive clubroom. Norm was honoured with Life Membership of the Taupo Branch NZVCC in May 2019 for his services to our club. He will be sorely missed for his constructive and pertinent advice plus his enthusiasm for Vintage car motoring. We extend our deepest and sincere sympathy to Jocelyn and her family. Graham Mock

Country Roads Rally Report

Notes From the Country Roads Rally Route Planner Be careful what you agree to â€“ things can turn out to be bigger than you imagine. When Club Captain Tony asked me to plan the route our 2020 Country Roads Rally, I agreed without too much thought. However, gradually it dawned on me what I had taken on, but with amazing help from the experienced Rally Committee, we got there in the end. The rally this year was a little unusual because it required quite a long drive to get to the morning tea stop at Waiotapu. This necessitated splitting the stage into two parts, stages 1A & 1B. The checkpoint between the stages, which was in River Road on the way to Broadlands, seemed to intrigue many participants (including locals). So many had no idea the settlement there existed. One of the visiting entrants wondered whether he was at Reporoa!

Stage 1B was a timed stage which some found easy, and others found it challenging. Those that did best on the stage were those that figured out that target speed and distance given in the stage instructions meant that 60 minutes was the target time... Easy. Stage 2 from morning tea through the Waikete Valley involved Tulip navigation. News of this caused some alarm at the rally pre-briefing, but as it happened, this stage was well done by most participants. Feedback afterward was that people generally enjoyed tulip navigation as a change from straight-line navigation.

In setting the route, I thought that Stage 1A around the streets of Taupo would be easiest, but it actually turned out to be the hardest with an average score of only

9/20. The average score on the timed Stage 1B was 12/20, and the easiest stage turned out to be the Tulips Stage with an average score of 16/20. At the morning briefing, I read out a message from NZ Vintage Car Clubâ€™s National President, Diane Quarry, asking members to be conscious of holding up faster traffic while participating in club events. I was pleased to see that entrants in our rally seemed to take this message on board because, as I anxiously drove around the rally course in my Mazda 6, whenever I encountered a vintage car on the road, they invariably pulled over and let me fly past.

So thanks once again to everyone for your help, be it those out on the course, at the lunch stop, the marking team, or those assisting at the clubrooms, in making our 2020 rally a great success. Murray Stanley APRIL 2020

Country Roads Rally Report

Friday, 13th March It was the start of a great weekend for the Taupo Branch of the Vintage Car Club. Late afternoon, early evening, many entrants accepted the invitation to collect their rally packs and bring some takeaways and refreshments to the clubrooms and share and met other entrants for the Saturday rally. A great turnout and lots of fun and all but a few of the rally packs collected.

Saturday 14th

Vehicles started to gather at the club from 8.30 ish to get prepared for the rally briefing and 1st entrant away at 9.30 am. Over the next hour, the 37 entrants were sent on their way for the 170km run. Stages 1 & 2 were competitive and were based around the Taupo industrial area before heading out on the country roads. The route took us out Broadlands/Reporoa direction, leaving the main roads and travelling around the true country roads of the area. Included were interesting questions, some competitive requirements, and quite a lengthy timed sectioned finishing at the Benny Bee CafĂŠ/Service Station at Waiotapu, the end of stage 2. An opportunity for smoko and a comfort stop.

Stage three. One stage through to the lunch stop. Wow. Tulip navigation and silent checks were the only instructions to take us through to Ngakuru community hall and an awesome lunch stop. Everyone arrived and had their lunch at leisure before departing back to Taupo on the Touring non-competitive section. A choice of two routes, one being shorter but travelling over metal roads. This was the route we travelled back on. Back over the Ohakuri dam, before back to the main roads and a pleasant run to Taupo.

Saturday Evening A great diner and prize giving. It was a full house in the clubrooms, with 78 seated for dinner. Following the happy hour, and a welcome, the dinner commenced as APRIL 2020

scheduled at 7 pm. A brief break before dessert for the raffle draws and the prizegiving completed after dessert â€” a spread of placings for both visitors and branch members. A fun evening rounded off with the presentations being made by the sponsor, Mark Kirkcaldie of Kirk Motors. Great for both Lorraine & myself with our placings, winning class, Branch entry, and overall winner. A great selection of sponsored prizes shared amongst the visitors and locals.

Sunday Morning Clubrooms and parts shed opened. A good number accepted the invite for morning tea and a ferret through the parts shed. A number of sales were made. Comments from all were that the rally was well run and very enjoyable with visitors saying they would be returning. Overall a tremendous weekend. A big thanks to all those involved in the organisation, and the running of the event. Brent.

This beauty is again a local NZ vehicle I photographed at the Art Deco festival. Composition takes us to, Annecy, an alpine town in the Southeast of France. A fitting picturesque location. I was fortunate enough to spend a day there a few years back. Studebaker was an American wagon and automobile manufacturer based in South Bend, Indiana. Founded in 1852 and incorporated in 1868 as the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company, the firm was originally a producer of wagons, buggies, carriages and harnesses. Studebaker continued to manufacture other diversified products after automobile production ceased in 1966. Studebaker entered the automotive business in 1902 with electric vehicles and in 1904 with gasoline vehicles, all sold under the name â€œStudebaker Automobile Companyâ€?. After years of financial problems, the company merged in 1954 with luxury carmaker Packard to form the Studebaker-Packard Corporation. APRIL 2020
