Dean Packwood Hi there, and welcome to another issue of Taupo Torque. I joined the club back in February as I’d taken on a little project of restoring an old car, so it was essential I get together with people that have the experience, knowledge and wisdom of classic and vintage cars... especially for a greenhorn like myself. It was also a short time before finding out our editor (Pam) felt it was time to move on, so I put my hand up for the role. I hope to continue on the great work Pam, and those before us, have maintained. This is by all means a club magazine so if anyone has stories, articles or photos (with captions) that you woul like to feature in this magazine, please don’t hesitate to email them to me at editor@taupovcc.org Cheers, Dean Packwood

Printing Tips Although you can print this magazine to A4 (either actual size or scaled to A4), this magazine has been set up in A5 format. This allows you to print 2 pages up on an A4 or even a booklet if your printer supports it. If you open the magazine file in Acrobat Reader, and select file>print, under Page Size and Handling (see image below), you can print multiple pages per sheet. Click File>Print>Multiple>Pages per sheet> 2 If your printer supports printing both sides of the paper, you can also print a ‘Booklet’. Which allows you to print, then staple and fold up into an A5 magazine.

Chairman’s Report
Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – June 2018 In May we held the annual general meeting for the club, and this was well attended by club members. Two new committee members were elected, and we welcome Owen Duncan & Chris Smith to the committee. We are also pleased to advise that Dean Packwood has taken up the position as Newsletter Editor and Dean brings to this role a significant wealth of knowledge & experience in the world of communications. Thanks too for those current committee members that are continuing as a committee member for the next year. Again we sincerely thank Pam Mannington for her work with developing and managing the club newsletter over the past 12 months. The various reports presented show the club has attracted new members over the past 12 months and the club’s finances are in a good position. It was stressed at the meeting the contribution our sub-tenants that regularly use our facilities make to the income for the club since without this revenue stream the club would struggle to balance its books. Unfortunately, with the retirement of Eric as club secretary, we were unable to get any nominations for a replacement so Eric has kindly agreed to take up the position of acting secretary until a longer term replacement can be found. Again if anyone in the club feels they would like to make a contribution and comfortable with the role as club secretary – please let us know. The position of secretary is not an arduous one and is well supported by members of the committee. Also in May, we had the “Navigation Run’ – this year set by Kelvin & Jan Trim. This was an enjoyable run around the district with a small dose of Straight line JUNE 2018

navigation thrown in and an opportunity to test the knowledge of those that attended to 2 recent seminars on the challenges of this discipline. There is another seemingly similar run in June – The Brass Monkey Run – and we hope as many can join in with this one and have some fun. One of our big annual events in June is the mid-winter ‘Potluck Dinner’ and those coming need to bring either a main course or a dessert. You will be phoned by a committee member first to check if you are coming and if so what you are bringing. It’s often a challenge to balance to a menu so there may be some recommendations. Finally, just a reminder that the club has invested in a range of club embroidered polo shirts with all sizes now available from the club rooms. Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report June 2018 With the AGM now behind us for another year, the new committee can get the next years program underway. From the Club Captain, I wish to thank those new committee members that have put their names forward to fill our committee positions. Thanks to Chris Smith and Owen Duncan and our new Editor, Dean Packwood. I am sure that you will see them helping along the way. Make yourself known. Retiring committee members, thank you for your support. Kelvin and Jan, Thanks to you and your team for a very successful Navigators Run on Sunday 20th. I am sure that everyone enjoyed it, going home with lighter pockets after sticky buns and coffee. With the June program coming up we have two interesting events. No 1: Saturday 9th June, Mid Winter Potluck Dinner or “Winter Christmas Dinner” See Mag for more information. Please note all Club Member will be phoned or emailed to see what you wish to bring, Main or Dessert. Come and join other Club Members for a relaxed evening, starting with Happy Hour from 6.00pm, Dinner 7.00pm. No 2: Brass Monkey,17th June see the notice in the mag. I have been asked by several Club Members what is the origin of the Brass Monkey. This is my take on it. Thank you, Mr. Google. The story goes that cannonballs used to be stored aboard ship in piles, on brass frames or a tray called “monkey.” In very cold weather the brass would contract, spilling the cannonballs: hence very cold weather is ‘ cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.’

There are several problems with this story as follows: The term ‘ monkey’ was not otherwise recorded as the name for such an object. The rate of contraction of brass in cold weather is unlikely to be fast enough to cause the reputed effect. The phrase was actually first recorded as ‘ freeze the tail off a brass monkey,’ which removes any essential connection with balls. It, therefore, seems most likely that the phrase is simply humorous to the fact that metal figures will become very cold to touch in cold weather. Be prepared to wrap up warm as we don’t know what Neil has got in store for us. Looking ahead to a Club Night in July, with a guest speaker from the Waikato Cancer Society informing us of their role and what’s happening in the Taupo area. Again Taupo VCC will be participating in upcoming Hobby Expo (14/15 July), and we are looking at having a Sports Car theme this year. Cars and helpers will be required. Our Taupo VCC Club has a database of all members, and we use this to make contact with all Club members to inform you of upcoming Club Days/Nights. If you do not want to be contacted by a committee member, either by phoning you or emailing you, please let us know so you can be taken off the contact list. Note, we always have good numbers at most of our Club events, and this is put down to committee members spending time either calling or emailing. Are members happy to be contacted this way? “Brass Monkey Run” Sunday 17th June

Who would have thought a trip out to Licorice Cafe would have involved roads that we had never heard off or even knew existed? The weather held out fairly well, with only a short spell of rain on course, but we still managed to see all the wonderful views that greeted us at every turn of the road. It was great to see a turnout of some of our newer members and also to try out our new found skills, with a short section of straight line navigation around the streets of Motuoapa. Before arriving at the CafĂŠ, we checked out the new Marina, such an improvement on the old one. Winners on the day were: Murray & Barbara Stanley and Eric & Terri Foley who both achieved maximum points. Kelvin & Jan altered our tradition of the winner plotting the Course for next year, and this honour went to Norman & Jocelyn Pointon. Thanks again for a great day.

Preplanning Notice for Club Captain’s Tour Saturday 27th to Sunday 28th October 2018. We leave Taupo VCC Clubrooms Saturday morning and travel down SH1 to Waiouru.(112 kilometres) Vist the Army Museum for coffee, comfort stop. Regroup and travel down SH1, turn off approx 12km north of Taihape and travel over the Gentle Annie. Take a picnic lunch and we will find somewhere nice to stop and enjoy the views. Any suggestions would be welcome. Travel onto Napier for your choice of overnight accommodation. (164 Kilometres from Waiouru). Approximately four and a half hours travelling time and a total distance of 276 kilometres. We are suggesting we stay at Kennedy Park Resort. Accommodation for everyone and every budget. The MG P-type is a sports car that was produced by MG from 1934 to 1936. This 2-door sports car used an updated version of the overhead camshaft, crossflow engine, used in the 1928 Morris Minor and Wolseley 10 and previously fitted in the J-type Midget of 1932 to 1934, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed non-synchromesh gearbox. The chassis was a strengthened and slightly longer version of that used in the J-type with suspension by half-elliptic springs all round with rigid front and rear axles. Steering was initially by a Marles Weller and later a Bishop Cam system. The two-seat car had a wheelbase of 87 inches (2210 mm) and a track of 42 inches (1067 mm). Most cars were open two seaters, but streamlined Airline coupé bodies were also made. The P-type was also available as a four-seater, a car that suffered from a lack of power and poor rear ground clearance. Whereas J, K and L-type MGs differentiated between versions with the use of numbers, with 1 indicating a four-seater (i.e., J1) and 2 a two-seater (i.e., J2), this was not the case with the P-type (or its six-cylinder sister, the N-type Magnette), and there is no clue to the type in the name.
