Dean Packwood Hi there, and welcome to another issue of Taupo Torque. Thanks for all the support and kind feedback on the new mag layout, it’s something I enjoy and a small way I can contribute to the Taupo Vintage Car Club. In June we had our annual Brass Monkey run, it was my first with the club, and my wife and I had a great time as back-seat drivers for Tony and Pam... Hopefully they had a great time too. We have photos from the day on page 16. Also in this issue we have part one of a series on building a special (on page 23). Something that you may have thought of, currently undertaking, or perhaps may even inspire you. And we also peek into some members’ workshops on page 33. This allows you to print 2 pages up on an A4 or even a booklet if your printer supports it. If you open the magazine file in Acrobat Reader, and select file>print, under Page Size and Handling (see image below), you can print multiple pages per sheet. Chairman’s Report
Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – July 2018 As we head towards mid-winter it was appropriate we had our mid-winter Christmas ‘Pot-Luck’ dinner. This proved a well attended night that offered a wide range of food selections to meet everyone’s taste. Also in June, the annual ‘Brass Monkey’ run was held and again close to 47 turned up attempting to avoid being the winner as usual, it is those in first place that get the award, and of course the opportunity to set next year’s course. As with the Navigation Rally held in May it was decided unanimously that the winner would be whoever was second to last. This was to ensure everyone tried to get the best points possible. After the run was completed we all arrived at ‘Fine Fettle’ in Taupo for some mulled wine and supper with the winners announced as Beryl & Joe Ridley. Beryl & Joe get the chance to set next year’s run (no doubt with the help of the committee). It was pleasing too to receive such positive reaction to our ‘new-look’ monthly newsletter. Dean has done a brilliant job of turning our newsletter in almost a work of art with the updated layout and use of colour and providing excellent advice on how to print the newsletter out in a format that suits all. For the Brass Monkey run the club was flying the recently acquired Taupo VCC club flags and we now have two of these that can be used when we run an event either outdoors or at an indoor venue such as the July Hobbies Expo at the Events Centre. Coming up in July is, as mentioned, the Hobbies Expo and a club night although we also want to look forward to the August Cancer Society ‘Daffodil Run’ that is now a national fund-raising event to all VCC clubs throughout New Zealand. Details on this run are included in this newsletter so start now to ask all your friends & neighbours to set aside an hour or so to support this important cause that affects one in three New Zealanders. Also to remind members on the arrangements the VCC has with Vero Insurance where generally attractive premium discounts are available to full VCC members on their club (30 years or older) car and as a VCC member competitive rates are also offered on all your other insurances such as your daily driver, house & house contents etc. On the back of Beaded Wheels is the contact details for Vero and the club receives a payment for every policy in place. Also just to remind everyone that the committee position of Club Secretary remains unfilled at this time so if you’re interested in helping – please let us know. Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report July 2018 Mid-Winter’s Pot Luck Dinner, what a great successful evening with lots of lovely food we all shared. Beautiful hot dishes and a yummy chicken dish stuffed with eggs. Isn’t so different from our family Summer Christmas lunch, lots of nice cool salads, ham carved off the bone. Well, it’s only six months away. Thanks to all our cooks that share their recipes with us and I am sure that everybody went home with a full tummy.

and rearranging the Clubrooms ready for the Massey Exams on Monday. Thank you again for all that helped on the night to make this a successful evening. Neil and Lorraine were the lucky ones who won last years Brass Monkey, so they had the privilege of setting this years run and meal. It still amazes me that although we have only been involved with the Taupo VCC for four years now, on every run we seem to go on roads that we haven’t been on before. Who has ever been on Te Toke Rd before? Then finishing off the run with a glass of Mulled Wine and choice of 3 different meals. Thanks to Neil and Lorraine.
Joe and Beryl Ridley were announced the winner on the night and am sure that they have a few old rally routes up their sleeves they can share with us. Let us know whether you require assistance. Looking ahead to July/August. On our Club Night 11th July, I have asked the Waikato Bay of Plenty Cancer Society to speak to us about their work, supporting a family of Cancer Patient, having workshops in the Taupo Bay of Plenty regions. You are welcome to bring along family and friends, and at the conclusion, supper will be served. Make sure you mark your calendar for the Annual Daffodil Rally for Cancer Run on Sunday the 26th of August. Starting at our Clubrooms 1 pm. The annual Starlight Cinema Taupo Hobby Expo, Saturday 14th, 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday 15th July 10 am to 3 pm is on again this year. Our Club will set up a display of 5 Club eligible Sports Cars for the public to view. We need members

The Packmobile Special Part One: The Build

First part of a series on building a special. We take a look at the Packmobile, built back in the 80s with a bit of ingenuity and shoestring budget.
Back in the mid 80s, my father Don decided that he would persue a long held dream of buillding a car. It’s called, appropriately, the Pack-Mobile and is very loosely designed on a 1920’s MG Midget. Don took two years to build the wood-bodied car from scratch involving many long nights. Don started off with many months of sketches, diagrams and plans before settling on a concept which would evolve during it’s construction. JULY 2018

Then, he had to find a suitable foundation on to which to build. He found an old 1965 Skoda Octavia Combi. The Skoda Octavia engine, drive train and separate chassis were used in the Trekka, a light utility vehicle manufactured in New Zealand between 1966 and 1973 (Incidentally, the Trekka was the only vehicle designed and manufactured in New Zealand to have entered commercial production for an extended period). It has a 4 Cylinder 1221 cc engine with 45-55 bhp (34-41 kW), rear wheel drive and 4 speed (+R) gearbox. Although the Packmobile can cruise at 80-90km/h quite comfortably, at that speed the wind whips up over the tiny curved windscreens on to your face making conversation a little difficult.

It comes complete with brass and copper radiator, wooden inserts on the wheels (for that wooden spoked wheel look) and an oak panelled dashboard (made from an old bed headboard). Such is Don’s ingenuity that some of the brake lever mechanism (photo on following page) was salvaged from old sewing machine parts. Don acknowledges the local car builders in getting parts for the car.

You can expect a car that looks like this should attract a lot of attention — it does, especially from the older generation that really know their cars, but at first glance, can’t quite pick this one. It certainly generates a lot of curiosity. The cost of building this back in the 80s? Thousands and thousands? Think again. As Don used many parts from everyday cars and worked on it himself, it came to around $2,600. But it’s not for sale at any price. Don wants to keep it indefinitely so he can derive more fun out of it in future years. Then, as the years went by, the Packmobile found itself sitting in storage for over a decade. Part two next month, will the Packmobile see the light of day once more? Yes, but needs a bit of work... the restoration starts.

Preplanning Notice for Club Captain’s Tour Saturday 27th to Sunday 28th October 2018. We leave Taupo VCC Clubrooms Saturday morning and travel down SH1 to Waiouru. (112 kilometres) Vist the Army Museum for coffee, comfort stop. Regroup and travel down SH1, turn off approx 12km north of Taihape and travel over the Gentle Annie. Take a picnic lunch and we will find somewhere nice to stop and enjoy the views. Any suggestions would be welcome. Travel onto Napier for your choice of overnight accommodation. (164 Kilometres from Waiouru). Approximately four and a half hours travelling time and a total distance of 276 kilometres. We are suggesting we stay at Kennedy Park Resort. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was the first iteration of the SL-Class grand tourer and fastest production car of its day. Introduced in 1954 as a two-seat coupé with distinctive gull-wing doors, it was later offered as an open roadster. The 300 SL’s main body was steel, with aluminium hood, doors and trunk lid. It could also be ordered with an 80 kg (180 lb) saving all-aluminium outer skin at tremendous added cost; just 29 were made. More than 80% of the vehicle’s total production of approximately 1400 units were sold in the US, making the Gullwing the first Mercedes-Benz widely successful outside its home market. The 300 SL is credited with changing the company’s image in America from a manufacturer of solid but staid luxury automobiles to one capable of rendering high-performance sports cars.
