Chairman’s Report

Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – December 2018 October & November were busy months for the club. We started in late October with the Club Captain’s run from Taupo through to the Gentle Annie road over to Hawkes Bay. This was a great weekend, and for many a new run over a part of the North Island, few will have travelled before. Fortunately, this road is now fully sealed although a good set of brake linings is a prerequisite as it is steep in parts. With slightly threatening weather to the west, club cars left Taupo for a brief morning tea at the NZ Army Museum in Waiouru then onwards to the turnoff to the Gentle Annie. John Godfrey had a minor electrical problem with his Rover 110, but with the combined technical talents of Noel Henderson Bruce Jefferies & Owen Duncan, he was soon on his way followed by a battery replacement stop in Hastings. We all stopped for lunch at the Kuripapango Campsite for lunch and then over the hill down to the rolling countryside of Hawkes Bay. We stayed at Kennedy Park in Napier and Happy Hour was followed by a combined dinner & BBQ. The following morning we went to the ‘Farmers Market’ to pick up the weeks fruit & veggies, and some then went off to visit the British Car Museum at Tomoana. Many thanks to the excellent organisation by Tony & Pam Mannington who also organised what turned out to be a fine & warm weekend. The Ladies night attracted some of the clubs budding artists and a group went to an evening of creative art with Maggie Dawson at Studio 92. The men were off to learn something about gunpowder and vintage firearms with Dean Packwood. Dean provided a range of firearms that most had the chance to shoot and this was a lot of fun. aged to hit the target received a rousing cheer and those that missed commiserations. Thanks to Trish Poupard for the use of her property out on Broadlands Rd and of course to Dean for organising such an interesting outing. Also in November, our run was a combined drive to Rotorua joining with other clubs in the region and a visit to the Rotorua Steam Museum where we had the opportunity to view some of the history of the region and marvel at some of the interesting steam driven exhibits including a working traction engine. There was an excellent turnout for our club and other clubs with around 50 cars altogether. Again the weather was kind, and we were able to enjoy an outdoor picnic. There is the Annual Taupo Christmas parade on Saturday 1st December, and we would like to see as many members as possible join our group as part of the parade. Also on Saturday the 1st of December is the Club Christmas function this year to be held at the Taupo Cosmopolitan Club. Space is limited this year, so please get your booking made early. As we are now rapidly approaching that time of the year, the committee wishes all our members & families a great Christmas and Happy New Year. Neil

Club Captain’s Report

Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report – December 2018 With our year coming to a close, let’s just reflect on our Club Activities during the year. We have worked hard as a committee to bring to our members an interesting and varied program. As always our year started off with our Summer BBQ Night to get everyone together again after our Christmas with Family and friends. 2019 Summer BBQ Wednesday 13th of February. Throughout the year we have been blessed by good weather for all our Club Days, and of course, this helps with planning and with the sun shining it always makes for a memorable day. Winter months can be challenging, and I don’t recall having to put any of our Club Days off. Thank you to all members who participated during the year, and we hope that you got plenty of enjoyment out of it. Last month’s Run over the Gentle Annie proved to be a winner. 18 cars completed the journey, some 420km round trip.

Looks like we may have to get another one organised for next October. Any suggestions, we would love to have some. See the report and comments. This year the ladies decided to break with tradition, and instead of a movie night, Maureen and Pam contacted Maggie from Studio 92, and they all headed off to try their skill in the Art World. A wonderful experience for the 12 ladies that got involved. Artists in the making. Now Dean said, “What are the men doing?” so he came up with a plan also. Dean is one of these guys that plays around with old Black Powder guns, so it was time to get them out and show the menfolks, and one lady, what these things can do. Thanks Dean.

We all came together back at the Clubrooms to enjoy a meal prepared by a number of hands. Thanks to the cooks and as always the cleanup team. Did you enjoy your $10 meal? Looking ahead to December, Please keep in mind the Club’s involvement in the Annual Santa Parade on 1st of December. See notice. Ladies Night Twelve ladies descended on Studio 92 at 5pm wondering what was in store for us over the next two hours. We had so much more fun than we expected as Maggie showed us how to make a jelly printing plate then let us loose with Red Yellow and Blue paint. The time flew by as our artistic talents came to the fore, Who knew that you could get every colour of the rainbow and more from these three colours. We stopped for a break midway and had some nibbles and refreshments while we checked out each others work, and then back to the task in hand to see if we could do better after getting ideas from the others. At 7.30 we then went to the Clubrooms where a delicious meal had been prepared by Tony, Eric and Terri. The men had been out playing with guns and joined us here for dinner. A great time was had, and everyone thought they got a great meal for only $10.00. Thanks Maggie for providing us with an interesting and entertaining â€œArt Experience.â€? Pam DECEMBER 2018

Club Captain’s Run, 27-28th October 2018

Saturday the 27th October dawned with fresh and cool winds, but that didn’t deter 19 cars lining up at the clubrooms for the start of our Taupo Vintage Car Club run over the Gentle Annie. We were not quite sure what the weather had in store for us. We needn’t have worried, and the first of the slower cars were on their way at 8.00am followed by the more modern vintage cars capable of cruising at the legal road speeds. By better luck than management, we all arrived safely, more or less, at the same time, at Waiouru Army Museum Café for our planned morning tea stop.

The coffee was hot and the cabinets full of yummy food. Unfortunately, one of the cars had a few issues and thanks to our fully prepared back up “Charlies” was able to have the issues sorted out enabling it to carry on to Napier where a new battery was purchased. One of our Club members only accompanied us as far as the Museum and after spending time at the museum returned to Taupo, due to work commitments. DECEMBER 2018

Thanks for being part of the journey. Thanks for organising a great weekend, you did very well, and from Maggie and myself ’s point of view, it was a pleasure to participate. A very big thanks also goes from us to those who stood by me to enable me to complete the great weekend.

After heading down State highway One and the Desert Road to Waiouru, the weather seemed to be on the improve, and after morning tea we continued on before turning off approx. 15 kilometers south of Waiouru, where our journey over the Gentle Annie on the Inner Patea Heritage Trail began. It was decided on this part of the journey that the quicker cars would lead the way so as not to be stuck behind the slow Model A. We passed through old remnants of the Moawhango Historic Village founded in 1868 and up through the Makokomiko West Stream. This was the southern boundary of the Oruamatua-Kaimanawa Block which was leased by the original European settlers, the Birch Brothers in 1867. Stopping off at the Springvale Suspension Bridge for a short break and of course, checked out the Suspension Bridge which was built by William Salt in 1924/25. It is now not used and sits alongside the modern Callender-Hamilton Bridge erected across the Rangitikei River in 1970. The oldest car on our run was the 1918 Ford Model T speedster Pick Up owned and driven by Gavin & Viv of Napier. They drove over to Taupo from Napier on the Friday and travelled back to Napier with us on Saturday. No weather protection in their open car, just warm clothes.

We arrived at our lunch stop after some two hours driving over some steep inclines and declines giving our gearboxes and brakes a good work out. The DOC administered Picnic and Camping Ground marks the site of Alexander Macdonalds first Kuripapango Hotel built following the construction of the first bridge across the Ngaruroro River in 1881. My goal was to do a road trip in the Avenger on my own, and I had never been on the Gentle Annie. I couldnâ€™t have done it without the support of the Club, knowing that there were members following me and backing me up. A huge thank you. Elaine

What a wonderful peaceful lunch stop at the location which allowed us to sit and relax and enjoy the sunshine in peaceful surroundings. If the hotel had still been there, it might have been difficult to drag everybody away, but it came to an end in 1901 when it burnt to the ground. It was now time to leave the Gentle Annie behind us and travel onto Napier to Kennedy Park, our accommodation for the weekend. We did enjoy ourselves so much. Thanks again.

Pam and I shared a unit with Maureen and Elaine, and this unit ended up being “Party Central” for our evening BBQ/Dinner. The boys managed to find a couple of extra BBQ tables to set up behind our unit, so we had a very private area to enjoy a few cold beers and wines before heading over to the BBQ to cook up our dinner for everyone to enjoy. A great turn out, good company and the weather held off, all of which added to making the weekend a great success.

Sunday dawned another beautiful Hawkes Bay day, and most of us chose to travel out to the Hawkes Bay Farmers Market in Hastings and enjoy checking out and

sampling what the stall holders were selling. Coffee, Asparagus, Figs, Olives, to name a few. Then it was off to the British Car Museum later in the morning. It was nice to see all the Min and Morris 100’s all neatly parked as if they had just come off the road. But it was sad to see so many good looking cars just stacked up. Some of our group headed back to Taupo Sunday Afternoon leaving the others to stay on at the Park for another night of relaxing and enjoying a quiet night. Lynne and I enjoyed this past weekend. It was a great drive, with great people and great weather. Thank you, Tony & Pam, for organising a great trip. We would be starters for another trip away. It was wonderful. Napier again put on a beautiful sunny morning on Monday, but it was time to say goodbye and start our journey home, stopping off for coffee at Tarawera Café. Just 5 minutes down the road after leaving the Café our wonderful weather came to an abrupt end, travelling the remainder of the way home in the rain. Rotorua Vintage & Veteran Car Club Inc proudly present the

7th Annual Rotorua Lakefront Car Show 10am - 2pm, Sunday, 20th January 2019 ALL CARS, BIKES AND COMMERCIALS WELCOME! The venue is the Rotorua Village Green at the Lake Front, off Whakaue Street. This is an informal car show open to any individuals or clubs to display their vehicles. Drivers will be asked for a gold coin donation upon arrival. All monies raised will be donated to St Johns Ambulance Rotorua. Car clubs are welcome to display their vehicles in a group. During the day drivers and their companions can enjoy their own picnic lunch under the trees, or take advantage of local eateries, including Rotorua’s “Eat Street” which is at the southern end of the show area. Rotorua’s Soundshell Market will be in operation adjacent to the Car Show, as well as other holiday attractions.

Over 300 vehicles were on display at last year’s show, and the event has been very popular with locals and holiday makers alike. Vehicles have ranged from early vintage to almost new. The MG Car Club On Sunday the 4th of November Taupo VCC hosted a group of MGC cars travelling the length of NZ to mark their 50th year. The Club made our Clubrooms available for the lunch stop, travelling from Auckland to Palmerston North. We provide them with tea and coffee and they fill our gold coin donation plate. Come to Napier and join the HBVCC for Art Deco Weekend 2019 from February 14th -17th. Kindly sponsored again this year by Euro City Ltd. 45000 people attended ADW in 2018. The Grand Parade on the Saturday will be limited to pre 1946 vehicles with a wheelbase of 160” or less. No tractors or trailers allowed. A weight limit of 3 tons will also apply. Here is your chance to show off that great Commercial vehicle along with Commercials from the Bill Richardson Transport Museum. We suggest you plan to arrive in Napier on Wednesday 13th Feb so you can participate in a special run for just the Commercials on the Thursday ending up at Off the Track restaurant for lunch. For 2019 the main rally is again on Friday and we plan to have a 3 or 4 hour run plus a picnic lunch at an historic Hawkes Bay homestead. The event is open to all financial members of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.) and overseas residents who are members of any Veteran, Vintage or other club recognized by the VCC of NZ (Inc.). The entrant must be the driver / rider, navigator or passenger in the vehicle entered. The vehicle entered must be VCC eligible. It is mandatory for the vehicle to have a current Vehicle Identity Card (VIC) and the sticker must be displayed. Entrants are requested to show courtesy to all other road users. There will be no priority given or implied on any rally route over other road users. No electronic or computerized aids are to be used in the rally. One set of instructions will be issued for each vehicle entered. The rally organizers reserve the right to disqualify any entrant whose conduct, in their opinion, is likely to bring discredit to the Rally or the VCC of NZ (Inc.). The ruling of the Rally Committee in any matter concerning the running of the event will be final.

PENNZOIL TROPHY – South Island Inter Branch Competition Each Branch is invited to enter a team of four vehicles each of a different category class, (ie. Veteran, Vintage, PWV, etc.). Ashburton has a wide range of accommodation available in and around our town, we have listed some of them at the back for your convenience. The Rally Committee strongly recommend booking your accommodation for the weekend as early as possible. RALLY ROUTES Three routes to choose from – all routes are on mainly rural roads with low traffic density. All rally routes end at the same lunch destination. Please bring a chair with you. SHORT: All sealed roads – distance approximately 68 miles,(110kms). MEDIUM: Mainly sealed roads – distance approximately 88 miles, (142kms). LONG: Mainly sealed roads roads – distance approximately 130miles, (210kms). After lunch there will be a choice of optional interest venues including an historic village, tractor collection, Bentley workshop or Aviation Museum to visit on your return to Ashburton.
