Members will notice as they enter the clubrooms that concrete has been laid at the entranceway. This will help with vehicles coming through the gate that they don’t get stuck and when gate needs to be open & closed that we don’t get wet feet. I would like to thank Andrew Adlam from AA Contracting who provided the concrete shingle, Porter Hire with Digger hire, Steven Oliver and Jim Logan for pouring the concrete by hand. Also, the water tank has been emptied and water blasted. I would like to thank Steven Oliver & Les Bognuda for doing this wet job. The tank is now full! The water filters have also been replaced to ensure your drinking water is safe to drink. There are some interesting visits and club runs coming up in the coming months, so get those vehicles and bikes out and enjoy the summer days. Check out details in the mag. Hi Folks, a request from your committee, if you have any unloved tools lying round that you could donate to the Branch to add to our toolbox they would be welcome. We are also looking to upgrade the lighting in the meeting room, watch this space. Also, check out the change in meeting place for our Festival Garden Run on the 28th on page 4. An interesting evening was spent at our September Club night with N I Club Captain, Kaaren sharing her plans for upcoming events and showing highlights from her recent trip across the U S A. This years Rubber Duckie Motor Cycle Rally was a great success with 37 entries. The route covered much of the coastal area with lunch at the Egmont Boat Club and was enjoyed by all who entered. Thanks to Rob and his team for organising a fantastic weekend. Jim Logan organized the Midweek run which saw nearly a dozen cars and their passengers visiting Elite Kitchens new Factory and showrooms in Bell Block. The computerized machinery used was unbelievable and made manufacture look so easy. We then headed to the garden and car collection of Allan and Lorraine Inch also in Bell Block. They had bought a block of three sections over twenty years ago and have planted it in a park like setting. The native trees are now quite mature with clumps of flowering Clivias scattered beneath them looking quite spectacular. Bryan Morris told me he is driving his newly restored Vauxhall Tourer to the Vauxhall Rally in Westport. He hopes to pick up ex Taranaki member Brian Sprague, who now lives in Christchurch, as navigator, on the way. I hope you have a trouble-free trip and good weather for this long journey, Bryan. ROBIN CHADWICK Robin passed away on the 30th July 2018. His interest in things mechanical started in high School, after which he spent most of his life as a motor mechanic. He joined various car clubs and also took part in motor racing at Ohakea with his 1.5 litre Riley. Robin became a member of the Taranaki Branch of the Vintage Car Club in 1998 and with wife Pam motored a Bradford van and also an A40 Farina. Robin was most helpful in many ways, not only with cars but with organizing Midweek runs, Potters Paddock events and several Maunga Moana Rallies, for which he was a member of the organizing committee. Both Robin and Pam were keen entrants in most Branch activities and Robin will be sadly missed. Our thoughts remain with Pam and Robin’s Family. Bryan Morris 4
The Restoration 1917 OAKLAND SIX TOURER I had been looking for a later Veteran to restore when I spotted an advert in Beaded Wheels that read and sounded interesting. It was a 1917 Oakland Six Tourer Model 34. So on to the phone to Dick Andrew in Auckland who had the Oakland for sale. A very honest Dick told me ‘I can’t send you any good pictures as it is all in bits completely and has been since I bought it 10 years earlier, in fact he had not touched it but as the advert said 95% mechanicals there and some body parts, any reasonable offer’. After a few more conversations and some pics that certainly proved the project was definitely a basket case I bought the Oakland sight unseen? So in January 2006 off to Auckland, loaded the heavy stuff onto pallets, and filled the trailer with body and other parts and everything was on its way to Manaia, Taranaki. Okay, my next job, try and find some History on my Oakland and more importantly owners of 1916 to 1918 models. Finding history didn’t prove a problem, briefly it is:Prior to 1948: Converted to a ute, market gardens, Pukekohe. 1953-1964: Coal and wood merchant, Massey Rd, Mangere, 1964-1968: Norm Dewhurst saved it from being dumped, 1968-1971: O E Haywood, who supplied the previous history, 1971-1987: Dave Mogsford who also owned a Rugby, 1987-1996: Errol McLintock started body panels, 1996-2005:Dick Andrew (I bought it from him), 2006 - Myself. We have named her “OLEOKY” Now to try and find some Oakland owners proved a real challenge and I soon realized there were not too many of these 16 – 18 cars left in New Zealand. Bill Skeggs proved a very good help (he has a 1917) and of course he had written to 2/3 previous owners of my car as well. Brendon Fox in Levin was another good contact as he had two, of which one was a Scripps Booth. I needed these people for measurements etc and mechanical details and parts if I was to get somewhere. In total there were only three or four people with similar cars in N Z and today we believe there are only three 1917 Oaklands in N Z. 5

Well the next two pics say it all, there she was before me lying on my workshop floor. I started with a chassis that was surprisingly in pretty good order, no real problems. The front end was a challenge especially wheel bearings, however different story with the diff. The Crown wheel and pinion were knackered and it took me two years to get a replacement from Australia. Okay when finished, no funny noises and bearings good. Straight cut teeth took a little while to adjust and get right. Gearbox and clutch presented some problems as I needed three gearboxes to sort out reasonable parts and gears to make up one box; clutch was okay that is a cone type. The radiator had numerous leaks and is a honeycomb type however we devised a way to repair individual tubes and resolder them back up. All good after several pressure tests. Now for the overhead valve exposed pushrods for this six-cylinder motor. Cast-iron pistons were good, rings needed ren otherwise crank and other gear has acceptable clearances. However, the head valves and valve gear needed major work. Firstly, finding a replacement head, then into the engine reconditioners to get everything done. It was then ready to put together, even found a new head gasket at the Napier parts shed. The Marvel carby, inlet and exhaust manifolds, starter and other bits needed the normal work on them to bring up to standard. However, the generator with the distributor mounted on the front top was a major component that took many years to find. Even now I really need another as mine is grotty but there is no real alternative. There is my plea "I HOPE SOMEONE HAS ONE". Dashboard and instruments were luckily mostly there as were lights ETC. Then it was time for the body. I had a radiator, shell, bonnet and one front guard. Two doors, a scuttle, one and a half rear guards and two parts of a rear tub. Slowly but surely, I started at the front, mounted the radiator and surround then the scuttle which allowed me to hinge and fit in place the bonnet. Please remember I also do my own panel work, fitting and priming also. By now it was October 2008. As I had one good front driver's side mudguard this was soon worked on and done and fitted. Being began a real challenge in my life, where do I start trying to make a "NEW" front passenger's side mudguard. I am sure my methodology of making this was not the correct way but some 10 months later I emerged from my workshop with something that reassembled guard. There was to be another two months of panel work if I was reasonably happy, but never will I ever attempt another. 8

Rubber Duckie Rally I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members that offered to be Marshalls for our recent rubber Duckie Rally. What a great day it turned out to be. One out of the bag! I hope that you got the same pleasure as the riders did. The run went up through the Ranges and down the coast towards Opunake. The mountain was clear, the everchanging countryside and the lunch stop at the boat club all combined to make it a great day. Our Dinner and prizegiving at the Beach St Hall was a big improvement from the Golf Club, thanks to the Classic Motorcycle Club. So, once again thanks to all. Rob Gudopp— Road Run Organiser
Unveiling Ceremony South Taranaki R.S.A. approached Vintage Car Club members to ask if they would be available on the afternoon of 15th September to transport Dignitaries, such as M.P. Andrew Little – Representative from French Embassy Deputy High Commissioner of Australia and his wife, N.Z. Chief of Defence, R.S.A. leaders, Veterans, South Taranaki Mayor – Ross Dunlop – and Community leaders. It was from the R.S.A. to the new Memorial Garden, in the shape of a Victoria Cross, situated opposite King Edward Park and return to R.S.A. for afternoon tea. The occasion was the unveiling ceremony of two statues, one of John Gildroy Grant and the other of Harry John Laurent who both received the Victoria Cross in 1918 within twelve days of each other for brave acts during World War 1. The South Taranaki R.S.A. celebrates its 100 birthday this year so the erection of the Statues is their Centennial project. Car drivers involved were Bryan Morris, Ian Stables, Ron Ingram, Danny Hurley, Graeme Kempton and Stuart Craig. 10
