Daffodil Deliveries and Rally
My thanks go to all who helped with the delivery of the Cancer Society daffodils, especially to Norm Bunt who organised the envelopes and areas that we covered. A job well done, in nice weather. The Pleasant Point Lions Club Classic and Vintage Car Display

The Pleasant Point Lions Club is organising a Classic and Vintage Car Display at Pleasant Point on Saturday 3rd November 2018 as part of the “Get to the Point” Day. The day includes Market Stalls, Shearing, Highland dancing and other events as well as live entertainment. If any of your club members are able to come we would like the cars to be there by 10am and if possible to stay until 2pm. The entry fee will be a gold coin donation to South Canterbury Heart Kids. There is to be a competition for people’s choice of the best car. The Car Display is on Afghan Street which runs parallel to the Main Street. The Railway Station is on Afghan Street. You will be directed from the Timaru end off the Main Road to the display area. Perfect weather, generosity and a good cause contributed to the success of our second annual Daffodil Rally for Cancer raising a record
$60,000.00!
We had great feedback and attendance for the 2017 event and raised $40,000.00 for the Cancer Society. I am delighted that this year we increased the amount raised by 50%, and I am very proud of our Club and our members who were involved. There were over 3000 vehicles either on the road or on display on the day. Twenty-six branches of the VCC were involved this year and all the money raised will stay in their area and be given directly to the local Cancer Society. Many Branches have commented that the response from the general public has been overwhelming, both in attendance and in their generosity. One of the lovely outcomes of this event is the interest generated in the Vintage Car Club, which has resulted in new members. I would like to congratulate and thank those Branches involved in the day for their enthusiasm and effort which has not only benefitted the Cancer Society, but also our Club with the public profile it creates. This day is a wonderful achievement for Branches and members who can be very proud of what they have accomplished. Our National Day has become a special event for the Club, and it can only get bigger and better from here! Hi Fellow Members, Since my last report , we have met with the Ashburton Branch on Sept 9 th or the annual opening run which was very enjoyable. We are certainly blessed in South Canterbury with the different nature of our roads. Planning has progressed well with the Mt Cook Rally with all routes typed up. Get your entry in NOW The last committee meeting was finished in record time as there were 5 apologies. The written reports making for a smooth flow of business. BEHIND THE HEDGE These are examples of Chrysler Corp’s post war Dodges Plymouths and De Soto’s, they all used the same body but each marque had it’s own grilles and front end design also trim and interior. Chrysler’s “New Yorker” used its own body which was larger and more luxurious than its cousins. The Dodge Plymouth and De Soto all used the flat head six cylinder engine which was the mainstay of Chrysler products right through from 1929 to the late 1950’s. The cars were very popular and sold in large numbers in Australia and New Zealand as family cars, taxis, agents cars etc, this body shape was in production from the war years till 1949 when a new design was put into production. Interestingly only Dodge remains of these three, De Soto going out of production in 1960 and Plymouth quite recently being discontinued.

I encountered this when in Christchurch on work a few weeks back Jim Geddes old 1946 Austin is a mobile billboard for OGB Bar and Cafe in Cathedral Square, parked outside the Old Government Building. It is still flying the SCVCC flag, with regards to the green windscreen sticker. Regards, Shannon

MID WEEK RUN - THURSDAY 13 th SEPTEMBER 2018
The final mid week run was held on a lovely spring day with eighteen cars in attendance. Starting from the club house we travelled through Beaconsfield/Fairview/ Holme Station/Pareora River & Gorge Roads, then from Cannington Road to Cave turning right we travelled to and then over Cleland Road. After taking several roads, back to Pleasant Point we headed north to the Te Awa Hall for afternoon tea and a natter. Thank you John & Marion for arranging this enjoyable run.
A surprise find when visiting the Hamilton Heritage vehicle collection recently was one of the original Morris Eights hired out by our own Timaru Mutual Rental Cars Ltd. Mutual Rentals and Mutual Travel were a major firm in Timaru for several years owned by the Coxhead family. Editor Bill

Keith Gilchrist the then manager of Auto Parts in 17 Carroll St Dunedin was the successful tenderer. The late Terry Cassidy was the then tow truck driver at Reilly’s who regaled us with stories of past towing and salvage jobs and one I recall was about a near new post war Studebaker with only “delivery miles” on it leaving the road and plunging into Lake Hawea. Despite a dive team searching for the car at the time it was never found and to the best of my knowledge is still there. The junction of the Mt Cook road with SH8 north of Twizel has claimed yet another life with a further call to replace the Give Way sign with a Stop Sign. I urge members travelling in the vicinity to just slow up a bit on approaching this intersection. There are moves afoot by locals to have a more visible warning sign put in place but I wonder at the apparent lack of concern NZTA are showing. Its unbelievable that on leaving the Supermarket in Twizel that there’s a Stop sign there at that corner likewise the corner of Domain Avenue and King street Temuka is I think still a Stop Sign, possibly justified when King street was part of SH1 but now there is a bypass in place is this really still necessary. A few weeks ago my wife Ruth and a work colleague left their workplace at Pukaki in seperate vehicles when a tourist ignored the Give Way sign at the Mt Cook turnoff corner and shot between their 2 cars, a second or two earlier or later would probably resulted in another fatality. So if your a participant in the upcoming Mt Cook rally be aware of that corner. Some years ago it was deemed the most dangerous road in NZ to drive was the Skippers Canyon, these days it’s the road Tekapo to Mt Cook. Take care folks . Graham Pauley. Seeing Russell Blacks advert in last months newsletter for parts for a 1947 Studebaker took me back a bit when as a child growing up in St Bathans one of our neighbouring farmers owned such a car. I acknowledge the Barry Smith is probably our clubs Studebaker expert so I apologise if I’ve got anything wrong in my comments relating to the Raymond Loewy designed car which at the time had American authorities concerned that with its radical design it would have people confused at its direction of travel. Harking back to my childhood, the then Satirist head teacher at Becks primary school liked to poke fun at the locals with skits at the annual school Editor Bill’s Aunty’s 55 Ford Customline concert so our neighBecks (from near Omakau) Parked in Front bour with the Stuof the Vulcan Hotel, St Bathans. (Late debaker copped it one 1950’s ) year with us all on stage singing “He travels near and far, that’s Jack Morgan in his back to front car”. Sadly that car was written off when it was being returned to its owner the Ranfurly mechanic ran off the road and over a bank in it. When I first started my mechanics apprenticeship at Reilly’s Garage in Dunedin in 1969 a number of unusual cars often came in on the back of the tow truck and one was a similar fawn coloured Studebaker with relatively minor damage, when it went up for tender a number of people came to view it. I remember being told it had a “square engine” and wondered what it meant. It means an engine having the same dimensions across the cylinder bore as it

On a wintry early spring Sunday 9 September, over 60 vehicles from Ashburton and South Canterbury descended upon the Hinds domain for our joint opening run. With conversations had over thermos and with hands warming up on car radiators, it was soon time for the briefing. There were no shortage of interesting vehicles within the domain carpark, the oldest a 1919 Ford Model T, with several others from the 1920s. The run, organized by Ashburton Branch took us up into a labyrinth of long sealed straights – ideal for setting unofficial land-speed records with. With Hinds in the rear-vision mirror it was in the direction of Carew – passing the interestingly named 'Carew Peel Forest School', and along the Trevor's road straights in the direction of Westerfield. It was nearing Westerfield and east of Mayfield where we encountered a real vintage gravel road with river-ford, Hackthorne Road. With dust within the crevasses of the bodywork, it was down to the Timaru Track – which in spite of the name does not point to its namesake. It was at the point, Lagmhor, that Les Wenlock's 1939 Chevrolet sedan developed a stoppage issue – assistance from several others soon saw it back in operational order. With Tinwald encountered, it was to the expansive grounds of the Ashburton Vintage Car Club for lunch. Having warmed up slightly, it was out with the picnic-chairs for many of us. A fair few of us also had a look through their museum – an interesting collection of 20th century of Ashburton motoring within – and the parts shed, complete with several decommissioned Morris Minors.

which he sold and upgraded ? to an ugly cream & brown 1946 Austin 16, it’s 2199cc engine was also used in the later A70 Austin. Some years ago Lindsay & his wife were doing a motorcycle tour in Queensland Australia when he ran into the rear of a car & trailer which resulted in them both being catapulted off their bike, the rear pannier bags were first to be dislodged and in the process rose up clipped either side of her helmet thus removing it after which she sailed 18 metres through the air, a very lucky lady to survive. The morning of the departure of the group I was again contacted as one of the cars after being towed up & down the road refused to start, the local garages and auto sparky showed no interest at all and long gone are the days when Service Stations actually stocked anything automotive like plugs, points, belts, hoses & wiper blades. These days other than maybe a small selection of light bulbs, they seem to resemble a coffee bar with vast selections of culinary delights? and reading material. Mind you to be fair the replacement of any mechanical or electrical item these days seems to require half the car or it’s ancillary parts to be removed or dismantled. The car was a 3 litre 6 cylinder Rover and as I own the later P6B V8 it was unlikely anything I had as spares was going to fit although I did have a spare coil & new condenser about the only 2 interchangeable items I had. After we cleaned up the points & replaced the condenser the car fired up and made it back to Dunedin.

Had a request the other week from organisers Adam Smith & Ryan Beck to man a checkpoint at Omarama on this years “Southern Crawl” a Dunedin based rally/ run for all sorts of classic cars which came into fruition after the old AA Otago Sunstrum Rally faded into obscurity. The event has a closed entry of 80 cars due to finding suitable accommodation & a venue to hold the evening award presentation dinner. Good to catch up with SC entrants Gavin & Marilyn Ladbrook, Peter and Gail Casey along with former SC member Malcolm Eunson, who with his booming voice and infectious laughter one seems to hear Malcolm before you actually see him. If I’ve left out any other SC entrants then as the legal profession put on the Bottom of their correspondence “E & OE” (Errors and Omissions excluded”) The run left Dunedin and after a lunch stop in Ranfurly carried on via Earnscleugh through the Lindis Pass to Omarama and onto to Twizel for the overnight stop. The winner of the rally has the dubious honour of organising next years event.
The run & evening went like proverbial clockwork where during the evening I caught up with former fellow workmate Dave Trevathan who during my apprenticeship in Dunedin drove a mint Morris Minor 1000 he re powered with an 1100cc engine and fitted with a Cooper S muffler. Another entrant I hadn’t seen since starting Dunstan High School in 1965 was Alexandra’s Lindsay Pratt who then drove a rather rare green 1937 2 door flat back Ford V8 sedan

For the afternoon run, travels were to the south of Tinwald, with a drive around the ever-expanding Lake Hood subdivision. After Lake Hood it was down into Willowby, and a run across the plains, with a mix of gravel and tarmac roads – mostly arrow straight. Soon we found ourselves up over the Hinds River bridge at Surveyors Road, and down into Lowcliffe, and our end stop, Raincliffe Farm, of Bryan Wilkins. At first glance Bryan's place had a few tractors and trucks parked up and abandoned shells of vehicles lying about – our own vehicles taking up all available freshly mown spaces. Adjacent was – at first glance – a nondescript shed with a sign reading 'Bryan's toy box'. After a briefing by Bryan it was time to look inside – within was into another world - a treasure trove of immaculately restored and original vehicles, mostly from the Mopar and Morris stables. Included were several Chrysler, and
Imperial models, with plush interiors more spacious than the average sitting room. The shed was well laid out, to a point where it could easily double as a function centre, complete with bar. At the far end of the shed was a restoration workshop, where a gleaming metallic blue 1937 Chrysler was in the final throws of restoration, the engine bay enthralling many.
