Merry Christmas to all Members , yes by the time you read this the big day will be less than 4 weeks away. I implore all members to put the VCC calendar of events in their own diary or on their own calendar. This year’s Christmas dinner is only going ahead because of the efforts of committee members doing a ring around even though the date has been in the Calendar of Events since the August TriCar. Quite frankly I’m disappointed as the event has always been a good “DO”. Past events in November have gone well , “The All American” weekend went extremely well & the weather co operated. A big Thank You to Shona & Bill Weir and their team of Clive Merry, Neil Manchester, Grant Stewart and Brent Birchfield for their efforts in making this event such a success Also S J Allen Ltd for providing the excellent toilet facilities & covering the band and advertising expenses. Nathan Macauley from Coolpack Cold Stores for providing the Curtain Sider trailer for the stage. Heart Kids Sth Canterbury whilst being the recipients of the proceeds ,also had a big team at the event assisting with its running. Also would like to thank the VCC members who brought their cars to the event and contributed $15.00 per vehicle. I would like offer my support to families that have members battling illness over this Christmas period & those who have lost loved ones during the year. Coming events are the New Years Day Parade in Fairlie & the Ladies Rally on January 13th. See you either at the Dinner or the Noggin & Natter on December 6th Ashley

Notes from the Library

Donations this month came from John Foster, Triumph TR manuals etc, Ron Cooper, a pile of Restored Cars magazines, which included a number that filled gaps in the collection, and a large number of books, 36 in all, from Ashley Southgate, mostly Motor Racing related from around the 1960 period, and featuring such titles as “Fangio Racing Driver”” 50 years with the Speed Kings”by Dunlop Mac, “the Enzo Ferrari Memoirs” and Jack Brabhams Motor Racing Book. These have been set up as a separate collection (the Ashley Southgate Collection). Many thanks to these donors. Work on identifying the vehicles in the colour slides we hold, mostly ex Bill Piddington, has been completed and work is progressing on converting all those not already done, to computer files which will be stored on a flash drive for ease of future display. Have you checked out the Library lately? We have lots of technical material and plenty of entertaining reading. Our display section of motoring curios is quietly expanding all the time and it’s a challenge fitting in the new stuff. Have a look next Club Night and a browse around the Library!
Weekend Away

This will be based at Methven. Accommodation is available, especially the through large number of holiday homes advertised on the internet. Google “Accommodation Methven” which will bring up Bookabach, Holiday Homes, Booking.com etc along with other options at the camping ground, motels, the 2 hotels etc. On Saturday will be a touring day travelling off the main road with the option of an evening meal at one of the Pubs. Maybe Sunday brunch at one of the cafes then a jaunt around the district followed by a communal meal on Sunday night at our accommodation. Monday head for home. Instructions and other details provided to participants, prior to event.

Monday and another fine morning but clouding up around lunch time. Campsites came down and packed on board cars with weather threatening again. Lucky for us it stayed dry, then it was farewells to all and then set off for home with yet another great Safari behind us. No gory stories to tell, although there was a moment involving three buckets of water a guy rope and one individual carrying some wood for whatever reason getting tangled up with said guy rope and ending upside down in the buckets of water‌ need say no more on that!!! Under canvas were; The Irvings (Wayne , Michelle and Ollie) Don Campbell and Les Wenlock. Barry Smith. Darren and Jo Ladbrook with Helena ,Cooper and Finlee. Visitors were; Frances Irving, Ruth Campbell, Lynette Smith Terrance Irving and Neil Manchester. Looking forward to next year!

Thursday morning arrived at Don Campbells place at o845, for a quick cup of coffee before setting off at o900. Travelling up Fairview Rd . to meet up with Les Wenlock at WhaleBone Cnr. and continuing on down the Taiko ZigZag , past the Lime Works to come out onto the Pleasant Point – Cave Highway. Turning left here then 200metres further on – right into O”Neils Reserve. At campsite there’s no time for coffee as weather is threatening, so it’s tents unpacked and erected quick smart. Just in time as it was getting damp as we were adding the final touches. Coffee time! The Irvings were already set up of course as they were here before us. The day deteriorated further as the rain set in steady for the rest of the day and night. Friday – no surprise it’s still wet then it turned to Snow!! Standing under Sticks awning the comment was made, “We are on Summer Safari, Why is it Snowing?” Wayne and Michelle were heading home to feed the cat so asked around the camp if anyone required anything, so I asked could they call in at my place and bring a pair of gloves, (and a Flask that I had forgotten). It was quite cold by now, in fact peering through the thick snow flakes falling down one could almost imagine Penguins walking across the campsite! Or was it just the kids from the Housebus down the far end…… On Saturday we had a few visitors and the weather was a little better. The Irvings went to town again this time arriving back with a large gazebo which was set up for that nights outside shelter. Sunday dawned bright and sunny, turning out hot most of the day. Late afternoon black clouds massed around us then a few claps of thunder and down came the rain, heavy like! An hour later the rain stopped ,sun came out and we enjoyed a great evening.

Finally on the subject of weddings and cars, a certain threesome once undertook a wedding transportation job in Temuka, the brides family was well known to the drivers and at the start of the photo session in the Gardens the brides father presented the trio with a bottle of whiskey after he had removed the top of & thrown it away. With the photo session over, the whiskey bottle empty & the bridal party delivered to the reception the cheerful trio made their way to their respective homes. Apparently Temuka had a lot of 4 lane roads that night. Them was the days. Graham Pauley. Thank you Graham, Very informative of happenings from earlier days with the VCC. PARTS SHED The tractor has been found very useful for moving engines , bodies and chassis's around . It has been running on 3 for quite some time but it was discovered recently that it now only has 2 operational cylinders and accordingly refused to start. It has also developed a propensity to take a leak on the garage floor. Repairs are well in hand and are being attended to by a duo of Campbells so with their expert attention it will be healthy and running again shortly.
Continuing on the topic of health it is sadly noted that another of our Wednesday regulars Dick Edwards is having a spell in hospital and I know the whole team are thinking of him and wishing him a speedy recovery. We have recently received donations of Vauxhall, Ford and Morris parts so check out your parts shed first to see what has newly arrived to fit your car. Clive Merry Parts Manager

but whilst competing in the field tests the rusty battery underfloor bracket16 let go, the new battery hit the ground, was ripped from the vehicle & was totally destroyed. Ron & Val Cooper for many years organised a roster of members cars for weddings The late Gordon Stevenson’s 1930 Chev was a similar colour to my 1929 DA Dodge and we did quite a few weddings together. Another car of similar colour to mine was Adrian Llewellyn Pemberton’s (better known as a Lew) with his 1930 DC8 Dodge. On one occasion Lew & I were dropping off a wedding party when a bridesmaid stood on the hem of her dress on his running board and went sprawling onto the ground giving herself a nasty gravel rash. Lew, a larger than life character was often accompanied on some of those early rallies by fellow Winchester members Colin & Allan Hawke. Lindsay Purvis (now of Omarama) played the guitar who along with Lew on the piano or piano accordion often entertained fellow VCC members with some interesting, hilarious & self composed songs. The late Barry Lovegrove in his Model A Ford & myself in the 1929 DA Dodge often did weddings together & one which is memorable concerned a rather “Plutey” family who informed us we were definitely playing second fiddle in our cars to a Rolls Royce which had travelled down from Nelson especially to transport the bridal couple. The fun started at the Craighead School Chapel where the wedding took place during which a pair of anxious looking men peered under the Rolls bonnet to try to establish why it lacked power and emitted clouds of black smoke. Ceremony over & with the happy couple aboard the Rolls struggled to pull away up the hill still belching a cloud of black smoke. A photo session In the botanical gardens had once again the same gloomy pair playing under the bonnet. The more they fiddled with it the worse it got. Barry’s advise to me that day was “For Gawds’s sake don’t tell them we used to be motor mechanics”. At the photo sessions conclusion the worried looking men approached us with a request could we fit all of the wedding party in our 2 cars ?, we duly obliged. Arriving at The Poplars the entire compliment of guest were assembled on the terrace to witness the arrival of this prestige Rolls which didn’t appear and the wedding party numbering about 10 poured out of our 2 cars to a disappointed & puzzled looking crowd. The most expensive car is not always the best.

SCVCC ALL AMERICAN WEEKEND by ED BILL Well what a great Saturday afternoon and Sunday event we had despite a terrible weather forecast, I must admit it was nearly “reach for the gun “ when waking on Sat morning to heavy drizzle however it soon cleared and 55 plus vehicles rolled into the Bay car park ready to leave on the cruise at 4-30pm. We planned a route up Douglas St - Morgans Road- Kellands HillRosewill Valley- Rolling Ridges road, Levels Valley onto Doake Road out to Pleasant Point, then up Manse hill to west on Smart Munro road to briefly on Fairlie Highway. It was then left onto Robinsons Road continuing onto Taiko Zig Zag then down Fairview road to Gavin Ladbrooks property to park up and view his workshop and collection. Feedback was entrants thoroughly enjoyed the cruise (One local was heard to say he hadn’t been on some of those roads before!) great views and good motoring roads.

Seeing members of the late Jim Sullivan’s family participating on this years Mt Cook Rally took me back a few decades to when Jim was president of our branch and I think the first & only SC member to attain the office of National President of the VCC. Jim had a Bentley, a Rolls Royce and a few motorcycles too. Brian Goodman passed away during the the year, another member who held a number of committee positions at local level and was the also on the National executive as Speed Steward for many years. In the early 1970’s Brian motored along with a few motorcycles a 1930 Chev roadster and he successfully built a vintage Bentley tourer around I think, a set of pistons he had obtained. Jim Sullivan loaned him the gearbox for the Bentley, Jim would grimace when hearing Brian attempting a gear change and the graunching noises emanating from the gearbox. It was Brian who persuaded me to purchase his older brother David’s veteran Douglas motorcycle, which never went as well as the one Russell Dales owned and on returning from a National Rally in Invercargill I couldn’t unload it quick enough when North Otago’s late Keith Perry offered to buy it from me. Another couple of members I used to travel into club nights from Temuka who are sadly no longer with us were Stuart Hatton & Lyndsay Prentice. During our early membership years Stuart had a 1934 Chev Master DeLuxe a lovely car to drive after which he restored a 1928 Oldsmobile. The Olds never went as well as comparable cars of that era & was prone to vibrations & overheating. I think he heaved a sigh of relief when it was gone and was replaced by the more motorable 1930 Buick. Given his dedication to our branch Stuart was a suitable & worthy candidate for his life membership. There are many cars around today which are testimony to his artistic ability to reproduce the wood grain effect on dashboards and other interior fittings. Lyndsay Prentice motored a 1928 Standard 6 Dodge which on its larger diameter 21” wheels gave the car a higher top speed at lower engine revs to those similar models on 19“ wheels. Lyndsay then went on to restore his 1937 Ford V8 coupe and a Model A Ford sedan. Also in his stable was a late 1940’s De Soto & a Ford Bonus Body 1949 Model V8 truck. The V8 truck which Lyndsay also restored was once the “Shop Truck” for Hally Motors Temuka. The first Waimate Wallaby Rally was particularly memorable for Lyndsay, he had just fitted a brand new battery to the 1928 Dodge

The big surprise I had as backup was travelling along Taiko Flat and seeing a Model T Pickup “bobbing” along ahead of me, it was none other than Grant Keely who opted to travel the full 50 mile route! He is seen here climbing the Taiko Zig Zag at a good clip of 45 mph hence he received the Vintage award on Sunday display day for the Spirit of Vintage motoring. The Ladbrook’s collection and workshop was very much appreciated by all who attended and great food was provided by the Heart Kids catering team.
