By the time you read this it will only 8 weeks to Christmas ,the silly season will be upon us. With the help of John Campbell & Norm Bunt + myself we got the new garage extension painted and it’s code of compliance has now been signed off by the TDC Thanks to Tony Roddick for the use of a miracle roller,it sped up the 2nd coat. also thanks to Darren Ladbrook for the use of a mobile scaffold for the gable end. I plan to get the rest of the back area painted in the next few weeks with members assistance. The First continental day was successful , something we can build on for next year. The Mount Cook Rally attracted 50 entries , I can see the Mountain from my Hotel room as I write this, A BIG thanks to Ross & Delwyn Luscombe for handling the entries for this Rally And setting up the rally packs. Also Ron Hammer to clocking in the time trialist’s plus Norm Bunt for helping with the morning tea and closing up the Club Rooms. A full programme for November coming up + the Christmas Dinner at the Clubrooms On December 1st My thoughts are with Members who are experiencing health issues at present and sincerely hope things improve soon. It was at this point I was asked if I would like to drive the Renault 5 – 21 a chance not to pass on, and for the rest of the run I was in the 'hot seat' – in a vehicle that handled like it was on rails, and with plenty of power on tap for a 1.4, particularly with the turbocharger. With Waitohi reached, it was soon a trip up the Seven Sisters Road to Hilton, and through Geraldine to our end stop at 'Geraldine Orchard Farm Shop and Cafe' – where over piping hot teas and coffees many a story was had about the day, our vehicles attracting various onlookers outside young and old. Timaru Continental Vehicle Day – by Shannon Stevenson With the ongoing successes of our annual All British and All American events, it was decided by several of our European vehicle owners for it to be time to have a day for their vehicles. With a date and time set of Sunday 30 September at 1pm, and with organisational work led by Ron Hammer, and the Manchester brothers a swarm of 23 vehicles descended upon our Clubrooms to take part. Participants vehicles covered several European countries – including Renaults and Peugeots from France, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen and Porsche from Germany, Fiat (including two 124 coupes) and Maserati from Italy, and Seat from Spain – older attendees included John Foster's Delaunay-Belleville and Lex Westoby's Helbe veteran project. Further supporting the day were several vehicles originating from a group of isles off the coast of France. With a rolling start at set intervals starting at 2pm it was out due south west for us, at first in the direction of Maungati. For myself this was a choice navigation spot, in James Polden's 1984 Renault 5 Alpine 1.4 Turbo, a vehicle bought with him upon emigration from the UK several years back. The route chosen was ideal for the cars on the event, plenty of winding hill country to test out handling, and long straights with little traffic. Of course with Kevin Manchester on rally route duties there was bound to be a shingle section, and this was encountered at Maungati's Timaunga Road – soon followed by tarmac generally popular with the midnight 'hoon' crowd near the Pareora River banks. With Cannington reached, it was up over the hill into Cave township, and along SH8 to Pleasant Point.

I’m back home again from our visit to Canada and the UK visiting our overseas family. Sorry we did not get any notes together during our absence but I am pleased to report all was well in the Library upon return. Thanks to committee members who opened up in my absence and members who continued to support the Library and dutifully recorded borrowings and returns. There were a few things to process but that was quickly done a d I am working on identifying the vehicles in the old colour slides mostly ex Bill Piddington and these will end up being converted to computer files for ease of possible future display. Some duplicated material was taken to the Ch-ch Swap meet and sale of a few of these raised a small sum to go toward purchasing stationery requirements like repair tape and tape for the labeller. Have you checked out the Library lately? We have lots of technical material and plenty of entertaining reading
Weekend Away

This will be based at Methven. Please note it is Sat Sun and Monday not Fri Sat Sun as indicated in event listings in Tricar! Accommodation is available, especially the through large number of holiday homes advertised on the internet. Google “Accommodation Methven” which will bring up Bookabach, Holiday Homes, Booking.com etc along with other options at the camping ground, motels, the 2 hotels etc. On Saturday will be a touring day travelling off the main road hopefully stopping at some places of interest with the option of an evening meal at either the Blue Pub or the Brown Pub. Recommendations on which one, welcome! Sunday, I am thinking of a brunch at one of the cafes then a bit of a jaunt around the district followed by a communal meal on Sunday night at our accommodation. Monday head for home. Instructions and other details provided to participants, prior to event. As usual, no entry fee, no entry form, nothing compulsory. Easy paced and suitable for older vehicles. Central Otago V.C.C. Blossom Festival Rally Saturday 22 September 2018
We all met at the Cromwell club rooms at 9.00am for morning tea and briefing. Then left for Alexandra to watch the Festival Parade. Some of the members took handicapped people in their cars in the parade which seemed to be enjoyed by all. The parade consisted mostly of beautifully presented trucks, with a few floats, tractors and cars in between. This took about an hour. Timaru had a good turn out Ron & Linley Hammer, Trevor & Margaret Walker, Ross & Delwyn Luscombe, Neil Manchester and Kevin & Nadia Manchester. Kevins mighty Reno broke down just before Sailors Cutting on the way there. He managed with the help of a few locals to get back home and pick up another car. It was sad to see that Colin Lyon passed away last month. Colin had been a long term member of SCVCC, assisted with the Paul’s Mystery Rally, and hosted VCC rallies on occasion at the Lyon’s Opihi farm and vineyard.
We went to the starting point of the rally in our own time, but there seemed to be a mess up with the Festival people and the car club we finally found where too start.
Colin was always the gentleman with a ready smile.
Went into Galloway Road and climbed up a steep hill for about 15kms on shingle then down the other side to Ophir. The long route then went up another hill and over farm land on a farm track, through 3 gates and through a ford. Then down by Becks Hotel. Everyone who did this route thoroughly enjoyed it.
Our sympathies to Brenda & family on their loss.
Went back to the club rooms for prize giving and the opportunity to have a look thru the part sheds. They seemed to have a lot of parts and they have just opened a new shed, very tidy. The Luscombe's Vauxhall F won the Post Vintage Concourse. Had a very nice smorgasboard meal at the Victoria Arms Hotel in Cromwell, then had a quiz, we did not have any success at all. The weather all weekend was really warm, not what we expected. Delwyn Luscombe.

Parts Shed Report Eric Robins has had a spell in hospital and everyone from the Wednesday Team wishes him a speedy recovery. We have had a final sign off of the Tractor Shed extension by Council on 10th Oct. Many thanks to Ashley, John C. and Norm for their painting efforts. We had a good set of 4 500x19 tyres donated recently to bolster our stocks of wof-able tyres available. The Wed. team continue with parts identification, processing of donated parts and breaking down of unwanted items for re-cycling. We also hold a good range of heaters and 1950's radios suitable for our older cars along with the more common disposable service items.

Our annual trek into mountain country at Labour Weekend loomed up quickly on the calendars. With preparation work, particularly by Ashley Milliken and the Luscombe's, it was outside our club rooms on a summer-like October Saturday at 9am for 50 entrants vehicles – a fair few of these pre 1939, and a number from outside the district. The lightest entrants vehicles would have been the 1941 Indian of Grant Jones and the 1979 Yamaha XS 1100 of Lex Westoby, while the heaviest (and with the most pulling power) would have been the Big Mack of Lynda and Gerald Taylor, the oldest Alan Averis' 1912 Overland, followed by John Callesen's 1918 Cadillac Type 57 V8 – all the way from Manawatū . A further vehicle of note was the our branch's own 4wheeled billboard, the 1973 Austin A60 van piloted at the helm by Miles Winter With teas, coffees and rally-pack lollies consumed, it was staggered starts after 10am. A photograph was taken at this point of Jim Sullivan's family outside the club rooms with Cecilia Sullivan's 1962 Chrysler Valiant S-Series. Headed to the the Waitaki valley for this year, our run took us south-west of Timaru – time trials taking participants up into Fairview, down into Beaconsfield and out to Southburn – the high -viz vests of the Hammer's with Nelson Bowden on Talbot Road marking the end point. It was further down this road, at Bluecliffs road intersection that the gravel section and sealed section branched off – Gravel heading into Esk Valley, sealed to SH1 and Makikihi meeting again at Hunter, before reaching the west end of Waimate, where several of us were soon distracted somewhat by the presence of a fair, an annual book sale, and the Waimate 50, where a number of Japanese origin cars were encountered cornering at speed sideways around the Waimate streets.
With the tyre smoke in the rear-vision mirror, it was past the site of the 10 old Waimate Hospital and through the Gorge – having instructions for the sealed section, this meant a trip into Arno, stopping to take a look at the rock formations in the valleys. The plains of Ikawai and the Waitaki River were soon reached, the trip now westward to the lunch stop at Kurow – where many of us shared stories, particularly of various stages for the run over picnics, pies, fish and chips and ice-creams. The afternoon trip took us up to the banks of Lake Aviemore, where several campers were effectively settled in for the summer, and Lake Benmore dam – where encountered at the lookout were two of our Model A

entrants in lively conversation about their 1930 models, only several digits away from one another. Headed up the hill from Otematata, although Prohibition Road appeared in the instructions, a fair number of us headed into Omarama, a cooling stop for many – either icecreams, beers or for vehicles themselves – with a number of overseas tourists taking a closer look at our vehicles, camera-phones in hand. Twizel was reached for most of us late afternoon, and Graham Rae field-tests took place starting the following day from 9:15am at our usual spot outside the A-Frame Chalets. There were three tests – John Foster asking several quiz questions – must remember for next time to memorize the Beaded Wheel covers – Barry Smith's wheel revolutions test, and Neil Manchester's 'guess the nuts and bolts'.

11 With tests completed, it was through the 'Scandinavian layout' of Twizel's streets and out to the Pukaki Canal, and SH80 – Mt Cook a most majestic snow covered sight on a clear day. With renovations in full throttle at Mt Cook Hermitage, it was limited parking around the front – the dinner taking place in the cafe area – the table I was at with the Foster's having a direct view of the Wigley's Ski-plane, elevated within the "Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre". By mid-afternoon a retreat was made back to Twizel by most of us, where a great early evening of socializing, meal and prize giving was had at Mackenzie Country Hotel – stories shared between tables throughout. Monday was a day quietly returning home for many – the weather again ideal for those with canvas tops to have them down. A fair few of us took the route via Lake Tekapo, where approaching Tekapo I encountered the Taylor's 1984 Mack truck, with several entrants vehicles on the back – Alan Averis' Overland traveling at great pace behind.
