Chairman’s Report Our annual auction night has been and gone, with everyone hopefully happy with their bargains. The auction raised $888 towards Club funds, slightly down on last year but still a great result. Thanks to all who helped with running the auction, and who supplied and/or purchased all the goodies. Special thanks to Simon the Auctioneer. This month’s meeting will be followed by a quiz night, so get your thinking caps ready. The Daffodil Rally for Cancer went off well, with a half in half mix of Club vehicles and the general public. The rally started in town and finished at the Clubrooms, with a choice of a long or a short route. As a result of this run, aided by $164 donated by entrants on the Round the Takis run, a total of $1014 was raised for the local Cancer Society. A great result. The total raised throughout New Zealand was $60,000. Several Southland members and helpers delivered approximately 500 bunches of daffodils to local businesses prior to Daffodil day. Many thanks to those involved. The Rally season is starting in earnest with the Vintage/Post Vintage Rally in early October and the Commercial and Arrowtown Rallies in the near future. Happy Rallying

Wednesday Run September 5th On a beautiful spring morning, 48 members left the Invercargill Racecourse at 10.15 am. We travelled through Lornville, past Pipers Produce, along Winton Substation Road and Riverside Road, along part of Dipton / Mossburn Road arriving at Nightcaps Hotel for a very pleasant lunch. The snow on the mountains was spectacular, the willows were coming into leaf and there were many lambs visible. We drove close to the wind farm, the huge blades becoming larger as we got closer to them. Quite a sight. Many thanks to Barry and Owen for a most enjoyable day. A comment was made that some cars did not STOP at the stop signs. We should know better!

From National Office Hi Folks I have another payment that has come in overnight which I cannot identify. It has no reference except the word “TRANSFER”. I am unable to identify who this would relate to. Can you please ask your members if it could be their payment made direct into our bank account? Note, it came in to our account on 27 August so it would have come out of theirs on the same day. It is for an amount over $115.00 (I am keeping the specific amount private as that is the only way I will be able to confirm who it is for, when they eventually contact me). So any member who did not pay on 27 August directly in to our bank account, or paid less than $115.00 not need contact me. Thanks, Julie

Russell’s Rambling Auto Spectacular, Dunedin A minibus group of locals members went on a boy’s day out to this event, once more with Brian “Fangio” Dunick driving. Amongst the Austin Healeys on display was the ex Noel Attley 100/4 now owned by Pat Hurley of Gore. Amongst the Otago VCC display was a barn find 1927 AJS ohv single owned by Bill Veitch and a nicely restored Heinkel moped ex- Doug Willis. There were less stalls, with model car kits and books popular. Restored vehicles were well done to original and of a high quality. Members had lunch at Waihola, returning home at a reasonable time.

Of interest to motorcyclists is that the new owners of the Woodlands Hotel, Mike & Sharron Butler, have motorcycles on display to hotel customers. About 10 older Japanese motorcycles along with a lonely 1961 Ariel Arrow are shown. Mike said the only bike to leak oil was a Japanese copy of a Triumph, thus following tradition. He welcomes interesting motorcycles on loan and hopes to have success with his venture as Mike Pero has in Christchurch, There is a large parking area on site with accommodation being built at the front. It will be a popular spot with main road bikies.

Round the Takis Run 2018
1st - 2nd September On bright sunny Southland Saturday I packed my bag, checked out the riding gear then headed to Preston St for the start of this annual run. I was met by 30-40 bikes parked along both sides of the street. After a quick briefing we hit the road to Colac Bay along with our back up vehicle driven by Neil Kidd. At Colac Bay we had increased to 55 bikes parked outside the tavern, of which 12 were VCC members the rest were friends, etc. It was great to see Bob Moore and Craig Cunningham on their Rocket 3’s. On leaving Colac Bay the Te Anau/Queenstown crew joined us. After a catch up & refreshments we set sail for Tuatapere for lunch where 120 people were watered and fed over the next of couple hours. Compliments to the staff of Waiau Hotel. On looking out over towards Foveaux Strait it would have been a lovely day for sailing as the water was as flat as. Before leaving a quick count up showed that there were 110 bikes in all. The Hotel donated a couple of bottles of refreshments for prize giving also. At the Hotel we passed around the bucket for Cancer Society and gathered up another $164.30 to add to the original $850 we had already received from the Rally. Those that didn’t have a leave pass for a stay-over headed home and the rest of us continued on to Te Anau via Manapouri for afternoon tea. Absolutely brilliant riding. Here the 12 who had ridden from Queenstown to Colac fuelled up and headed back home clocking up 500kms riding for the day. At Te Anau approx. 15 motorcyclists stayed for the night being hosted by the Distinction Hotel. After a clean-up and probably a nanna nap we headed down to the Ranch for a roast meal and prize giving. The Ranch donated T Shirts for prize giving as well. A great evening was had catching up telling yarns etc before heading back to the hotel for bed. Sunday morning up for breakfast, packing up for the ride home. It was spitting rain on leaving Te Anau but stopped at base of Gorge Hill. Head-

ing inland to Mossburn for coffee then continuing on home with rain once again at Wreys Bush until Invercargill. All in all a great weekend covering some 400kms. Many thanks to those the supported this run both as riders and those that donated prizes. Targa VCC Event – Invercargillnd
This timed trial will be held from Monday 22 October to Saturday 27th October. There are 22 entries in the VCC class with the oldest being a 1929 Rolls Royce owned by Murray Hawkes with local member, brother Kenn as navigator. Another vehicle is a 1935 Ford V8. On Tuesday 23rd competition cars will motor around Southland, Wednesday from Invercargill to Dunedin (based at the Forsythe Barr Stadium) and then on Friday on to Queenstown with prize-giving on Sunday. This will be a big event with about 80 entries overall. About a dozen Club members are asked to help with directions to participants parked at Queens Park on Monday, and Esk Street on Tuesday. Garage Tour On a fine, sunny day, some members opened their garage doors to a group of a dozen enthusiasts. Starting at Ray McCulloch's garage, he gave the group a talk on white metalling various motor parts. Also on display were some of his bike collection. From there it was on to Tony Warren's. On display was his line up of various names in motorbikes and we also got to look at the progress of his 1911 Vulcan. He is doing a great job. On to John Armistead's garage to view a collection of Holdens and Minis, some built to be a bit quicker than the standard models. Our final stop was Stuart Francis' motor bike collection of various makes and models. Some are still a work in progress. Thanks to the members for opening their doors. We need to support these club days.

Daffodil Run 2018 On a clear sunny August day 49 vehicles (26 VCC, 23 public) gathered in the carpark of Club Southland. After the filling out of entry forms, exchanging monies, deciding which route to go on either short or long there was time for people to have a chat with each other before heading off. Their journey took them thru town out into the countryside where along the way all vehicles met up and continued upon the routes to our Clubrooms. Once parked, up with visitors having a look around the building and at the Club’s 1907 Darracq which was out on display – this was a definite highlight, they were then served afternoon tea supplied by our members, as part of their entry fee was a packet of biscuits – great way of providing afternoon tea nibbles and filling the tins. Among the entrants were a couple from Hamilton who were touring around NZ on a year’s holiday. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves marvelling at the countryside and how friendly and helpful the Southland folk were. A common remark from the visitors was that they had driven past the Clubrooms but didn’t know what was behind the fence and were amazed at the facilities we had. We presented a Cancer bear to the oldest vehicle, 1929 Buick driven by Tony Warren and to the newest vehicle, 2018 Kia driven by Keith Shieffelbein. It seems that by starting in town we gained more public support. All in all a great day with the run raising $850.00 for our local Cancer Society. Further to this, on the Round the Takis run the bucket was passed around and another $164.00 was raised making our total donated to the Cancer Society $1014.00 Well done to everyone who participated.
