Chairman’s Report Our long time Bar Manager Brian Dunick has decided not to renew his licence this year. Tony Warren and Peter Pryde have now completed the course and once formalities have been signed off they will be certified Bar Managers. Without a certified manager we would not be able to run the bar, which does provide a good income for the club. There was some discussion at the last Executive meeting in regards to the format of rallies, and what could be done to increase entries. The recent Arrowtown m/c rally had only 25 eligible entries, and this year’s Southland Rally had 50 entries, several of whom were from other branches. This from a membership of about 300! Club Captain Ray has some ideas for changes to next year’s Arrowtown Rally, and a slightly different format will be tried at the upcoming Southland Rally. Incidentally at next year’s Veteran Rally all eligible vehicles will be at least 100 years old. Please remember that you must be a financial member to enter a rally. There are still several members who have not yet renewed their membership. As this is the last Rumour for the year I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy festive season. Cheers

1916 Triumph Model H 4hp Triumph launched its first engine in its 1906 single-cylinder, side-valve model in which it also introduced its renowned rocking front forks. The engine capacity was increased from 398cc to 453cc in 1907, 476cc in 1908, 499cc in 1910 and 547cc in 1914. By then, as the Model H, it had progressed from a single-speed belt drive to a three-speed SturmeyArcher gearbox although it still used belt drive from the gearbox to the rear wheel. During the First World War, Triumph supplied the military with around 30,000 Model H "Trusty Triumphs". This example previously belonged to and was restored by the late Hubert Twitchen, who was highly influential within veteran and vintage motorcycling circles from the early 1940s and later organised the Sunbeam Motor Cycle Club's veteran register. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of old motorcycles and set new standards for restoration. This Model H was Twitchen's second-to-last restoration before he died in 1976. The engine number 55257 CTP indicates 1916 manufacture while its frame number 322016 indicates 1923 manufacture. Twitchen is on record as having stated that he understood that it had remained in Army service after the war and had been rebuilt in about 1923, probably by the Triumph factory, around a replacement frame. The tank transfer contains the word 'renovated'. In 2000, Brian Verrall acquired the Triumph from John Comerford, the Thames Ditton dealer, both of whom are well-known vintage collectors, and in 2002 it was featured in the August edition of Classic Motorcycle magazine. It was purchased for the Nelson-based NZ Classic Motorcycles collection from an auction of the Verrall collection in London in September, 2008. It was acquired by Transport World in May 2016.

Russell’s Ramblings When at the Motor Cycle Mecca a local, Wendy Joy Baker, was being photographed with the Museum’s Model H Triumph, the same motorcycle I was getting details of for the bulletin. Wendy, who was doing an Armistice Day item, had 1914-18 medals from her grandfather and second war ones from an uncle. The museum’s Model H Triumph had been in action during the Great War. While passing Magoo Mufflers I noticed two Ford V8 vehicles on the hoists. One was John Lyons’ light truck and the other Dallas Ryan’s 1933 V8 Roadster. Dallas is giving this car the full monty with it being ready for painting. He has obtained the upholstery. There is no doubt this is a rare and of excellent design. A future concours contender. Twenty cars and a Scott motorcycle were on show on Labour Day in Queens Park for the public day of the Targa event. We supported the vintage competition with local members acting as marshalls which was much appreciated by the organisers. This successful event finished in Queenstown. MGC owners did a South Island Rally to commemorate 50 years since their manufacture. All of the cars were in concours condition, looking like they had just come off the assembly line. After a look at Transport World and Motor Cycle Mecca they travelled to Bluff for a photo shoot.

Wednesday Run - 7th November 2018
On an overcast, cool but fine morning (although we did get a few rain drops) we left the racecourse gates and made our way to Findlay Road and Mill Road North. Then we travelled with instructions to turn at the following signs: Hedgehope 14 kms, Grove Bush 3 km, Winton Hedgehope Highway, and Otapiri Gorge 15 km where we ran out of the pouring rain, and had blue sky the rest of the way. Then to Limehills Browns Road, Winton-Dipton Highway, Centre Bush (Hundred Line East) and over the Oreti Bridge; South Hillend Dipton Road, Dipton Mossburn Road, Dipton Castlerock Road. Then right at Castlerock, Lumsden 5km and right onto SH 6. And then we proceeded to the Lumsden Hotel for a lovely meal and a chat. There were 22 cars and 52 people on this Wednesday Run. Thank you Don Carter and Peter McBurney for an enjoyable run. Neil Kidd received a bottle of wine for the Publican’s choice of the pick of the cars.

Balclutha Rally 10th November 2018
Friday 9th November. On an overcast, sunny day we packed up the 1975 Mitsubishi GTO and set off about 1.30 p.m. and drove up to Balclutha. We did get a few rain drops on our travels. We arrived at Balclutha about 3.30 p.m. and found the accommodation. Brian and Joyce Stroud were already at the motel, then following our arrival came Ollie and Raewyn. After we had freshened up we all went out for a meal at night down to the Working Men’s Club. Then it was back to the motel for an early night. Saturday 10th November – We woke to a fine but cool morning. All packed up again we drove down to the starting point which was at the Balclutha War Memorial Hall in Clyde Street. At 10.00 a.m. we had a lovely morning tea. We also picked up our rally packs. The first vehicle was away at 10.30 a.m. We were on the long route for the morning run. Left out of the carpark via Clyde Street and continued across the bridge onto Barnego Road; then instructions to continue onto Clutha Valley Road, right into Sunflower Road, right at Give Way, veer right at stop sign, left to Benhar, right onto Mt Wallace Road (noting the old pottery works diagonally to the left). Left at the stop sign, left at Kaitangata 7km, right onto Eddystone Street and continue onto gravel; veer right at Toko Mouth 13km, continue on Coast Road, right at T and continue through Measly Beach township. Continue on Toko Mouth Road, right at T, straight ahead at stop sign, continue on Back Road, continue on Narrowdale Road (noting the prison on the left). Right at give way onto S H 1, left at sign “Sinclair Wetlands” 10 km. Turn right into Berwick Road and right into Sinclair Wetlands for the lunch stop. We had four questions to answer on a piece of paper which we then handed in, along with the People’s Choice forms after the drivers had voted for the best car in their area.

Then we had two routes for the afternoon run, long or short. We took the short run back. Left out of Wetlands. Left into Phosphate road, Right at T intersection onto SH 1. Proceed to Milton, stopping to view the Armistice Day commemorations at the Coronation Hall on Union Street. That was very interesting. Then we proceeded into Balclutha across the bridge, right into Charles Street, right into the War Memorial Hall for the social time and prizegiving. As well, three men from the Balclutha Club received their 50 year badges. Then it was the raffle draw and a lovely evening meal which they put on for all of us. Ollie Olsson, or rather Raewyn Murphy, got 1st place in the commercial class with the 1979 Morris Marina Van. Also Peter Hilston got somewhere too. He was presented with a cup and certificate. We both enjoyed the rally and found beautiful scenery which we hadn’t seen before. We arrived back in Invercargill just after 8 p.m. There were about twenty people from the Southland Branch at the Balclutha Rally.

Commercial Rally 2018
On 3rd November with overcast skies above 14 enthusiasts left the Clubrooms heading west along various country roads to arrive at the destination in Thornbury - Winston Saxton’s property. Along the way, the vehicles had a short timed section and answered various questions from the surroundings which made up the field tests. In all we spent approx. 1 – 1.5 hours at Winston’s, where the proverbial skies opened up and a good downpour of the wet kind happened. Winston then took us along to the Thornbury Vintage Machinery Club where they were having a working bee. We enjoyed a look around the facilities which included being provided with a hot drink if we wished. Some of us, while there, enjoyed a short video of the development of farming in Southland. Around 4ish we headed back to the Clubrooms for prize giving.

Arrowtownth Motorcycle Rally 2018
On Saturday 10 November after an early start, then picking up 46 lunches in Winton we continued on towards Lumsden for the start of this run. Here there were 25 members and 11 non-competing, this being visitors and unfinancial members, gathered for a briefing. With the first bike away at 10am it was a ride around Lumsden before heading out of town upon a scenic route, before hitting the main highway towards Arrowtown – although a few decided to ignore the instructions and take the non-scenic route after leaving Lumsden. While this may seem to them to be ok it actually can cause some problems especially when there is a backup vehicle organised as it is on the instructed run, not following those that went their own way. Then what happens if they break down, who comes and gets them! Also we have found out that if an entrant does their own thing, in future we will look at disqualifying those entrants from any activities of the event. First stop was Garston for a rest and chat then we continued on to Kingston to the Golf Club where we had lunch, a cuppa of sorts and the field tests. Once again this is a brilliant venue and we thank Paul Meehan and his crew for allowing us to use these facilities. After the lunchbreak we carried on to Frankton for afternoon tea and another gossip session before heading to Arrowtown to get ourselves settled into our accommodation, etc. We then gathered at the New Orleans for tea and prize giving. Sunday morning saw all the bikes back on the road prior to 11am just ahead of the backup vehicles. All up we had 4 casualties on the backup trailer, these included an Ariel, Scott, Royal Enfield and Matchless. Thank you to those who attended, also thanks to Casey Lyons for his help in organising this event and to Shona Ridd for filling out the certificates and Brian Dunick for providing the backup vehicle. All in all a good weekend with good weather to boot.

Letter to the Editor Hi Dave, I enjoyed the article concerning the V4 Matchless. Older club members will no doubt remember the late Stuart McKerchar who taught at the STC for 27 years. He was a keen motorcyclist in his youth and while having one of his Jaguars serviced one day told me the following story. One of the STC teachers owned a V4 Matchless which never ran right. Finally frustration got the better of him and it was sold to another member of the staff. When the new owner arrived at school the next day, the said machine was running perfectly. The problem had been in the ignition timing. Coil ignition and naturally a distributor. The distributor was pulled,centre shaft rotated 90 degrees and the distributor replaced and the timing adjusted. The secret was the fact that the cam is not square but oblong meaning that if is not timed correctly two of the cylinders are always firing too soon or too late. When Bevars Binnie and I visited Dave Palmer in the Hutt Valley in the 1970’s this point was discussed while viewing Dave's dismantled V4. An examination of the distributor showed that this was indeed the case. An ex-army CMT mate of mine called Bob Paisley from Nelson also owned one around 1960. Moving “Huria” Tim Hanna is interested in talking to anyone with a restored prime mover and flat deck who might be interested in undertaking a bit of an adventure. He wants to transport his half restored 1897 45 foot steam sailor “Huria” from Auckland to Lumsden - where he is the local publican. Naturally he would pay all expenses and he would really like to film the exercise from beginning to end and they would set off from Southland. (He has some experience making documentaries and has written books on John Britten, Burt Munro and Kim Newcombe). The boat is over-width at about 12 foot 7 inches beam so would need pilots at both ends and it weighs just over 6 tons.
