From the Editor Timing is everything. When he was preparing his material for the Rumour, Russell rang me to see when it would be available as some of the information he was providing related to events occurring before those who receive Rumour in printed format would receive their copy. However those who receive their Rumour by email will get their copy in time to be informed of these events. For this reason they are in this edition even if the information will be out of date for some of you. This is one advantage of receiving your Rumour by email. I can actually send it to you at the same time as the copy goes to the printer and the webmaster, however I don’t, it is actually sent out two days later. Even so, allowing for printing, labelling, posting and delivery you receive your Rumour much sooner by email, and it is in colour. As I am typing this it is a nice fine day outside and this reminds me that spring is just around the corner. This means it is time to get those cars, bikes, trucks etc out and enjoy using them as they were intended to be used. There is an entry form included with this Rumour for the Vintage, Post Vintage Rally that is being held on October 14, so if you have a vehicle that was manufactured between 1919 and 1945 (inclusive) this is a run for you. I note in the information that there will be no gravel roads on this Rally even though vehicles of this age were made to run on gravel and are at home on this surface. Of course this does not mean your car will not get dirty as the amount of dirt that farm activities bring onto the road is astonishing (this is one of my pet hates) and if it is wet this will end up all over your car.

Chairman’s Report The two notices of motion voted on before the National AGM both failed to be passed. Only 19% of members nationally, and 14% of Southland members voted. Maybe this means most people are happy with the way the Club is being run. The 30 year rule was discussed, with the Management Committee convinced that their interpretation is correct. However it was agreed that it was open to interpretation so a remit is to be put forward which will hopefully clarify the situation. In the meantime no VICs will be issued until the vehicle is deemed to be eligible by the Committee. The point of contention still remains. 10 Branches have opted to not join in the National Day Daffodil Rally on 27th August. This Rally may become an annual event. Kevin Clarkson of the Management Committee, and Beaded Wheels Chairman, will be presenting the 50 year badges to our 4 recipients at an afternoon tea at the Clubrooms on Sunday 15th October. 260 fifty year badges have been awarded nationally. The John L Goddard Trophy was awarded to the Beaded Wheels Editorial Committee. On the subject of Beaded Wheels our Branch requires a scribe to write the Southland Branch notes for the Idle Torque column. Any keen journalist please contact me or Dave Harris. Don't forget to sort out your goodies for the auction on meeting night.

Russell’s Ramblings Auto Spectacular is advertised in the “Beaded Wheels”. Club members are welcome to travel by bus in an action packed trip to Dunedin on 16th September. Meal and beer at Waihola when returning. If interested contact Colin Fleet (03 2179734) or Russell McIvor (03 2178481). Some seats still available. E Hayes and Sons have recently been loaned, from John Shand of Nelson, the 1960 KR750TT Harley Davidson that was campaigned by Alf Groves, then Trevor Twaddle of Dunedin. It is no. 15 of the 17 made, and has twin plugs per cylinder and dual ignition. It looks splendid painted in Harley blue. Ollie Olsen is keen to get a 1930 Chrysler head, Silver Dome casting no. 303288. Ollie can be contacted on (03) 2361408 Sycamore Print in Eye Street have over 100 colour photos of entrants competing in the 50th Arrowtown Run. These are too large to hang on the toilet door, better framed and over the fireplace. Dave Morris now has a 1934 Cotton and a 1930 CTT Triumph to go with his collection. There is no doubt a great variety of motorcycles came to New Zealand. Don’t forget the Hospice Auction organised by E. Hayes at Ascot Park on the 26th August. Last item to be auctioned is the latest Indian Scout with special inscribed petrol tank. Another event is the motorcycle street parade, leaving the Motorcycle Mecca at 12:30pm on Saturday 26th August and finishing at E Hayes and Sons. This is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Burt Munro breaking a world speed record at Bonneville. Vintage, veteran and classic bikes are welcome to show the flag.

Wednesday Run – August 2nd 2017
Brian spent a lot of time fiddling with the Chevrolet prior to this run so that we could have the car heated by the engine as we always freeze in the winter months. He was successful and we did have heat along with an unpleasant engine smell as it is air cooled. Oh well you can't have the perfect car! We left as usual at 10.30 from the Racecourse gates on a rather damp and foggy day. We drove the Rimu road to Edendale on to Wyndham and then the back road along the river to Mataura. We then headed across to Winton on SH 96. Unfortunately we didn't get to see a lot as the fog did not lift for us but we still had a good trip. Forty six of us enjoyed a lovely blue cod lunch at The Central Southland Lodge (the middle pub). Sadly we had one breakdown on the day. Many thanks to Dave and Barbara for organising the run.

Register of Vehicles for Community Events As a Branch we are continuously asked to help in the community with our vehicles. It would be good to be able to have a register of members who are prepared to donate their time with these events thereby putting our Club’s name into the public field. Otherwise it would be a shame if we had to start declining these invitations. If you are able to assist with these events please contact the Club Captain.
Hobby Castings Club member Wayne Rayner has worked in the past as a foundryman and has now set up a small furnace at his home. He is able to cast both aluminium and bronze to make vintage car parts, plaques etc. If you need anything cast contact Wayne on (03) 2173787.

Tony Warren with his 1911 Singer at the July Meeting night. Tony purchased this bike in February 2012 in need of total restoration with the aim of using it in the National Veteran Rally in 2013. The bike was completed in time but Tony has found the performance disappointing so the bike is now used as a lounge ornament.
