Our “Top Team” from the annual Ashburton—Sth Cant, VCC quiz night. Shannon, John, Marion and Lex clocked up a formidable score to retain the trophy for SCVCC flanked by Chairman Ashley and quiz master Alan Ferguson. There was a very good turn out from both clubs, the evening enjoyed by all, despite some “thorny” questions from quiz master Alan.

Colin Lyon’s 1925 DELAGE being prepared for the road in Dave Diamonds workshop. This is a superb “boat tail” roadster that Colin acquired a few years ago from Russell Barnard who had owned the car since 1960 and restored it to running chassis condition. It was over to Colin to have the body rebuilt, the woodwork being done by woodwork “guru” John Martin of Cromwell and the very difficult aluminium panelling being handled by Barry Tansley. The car is now in the paint shop for final finishing so watch this space for the finished result shortly.

Notes from the Library

Everything is reasonably up to date in the Library and I can head off overseas with a clear conscience. The Library will be opened by other Committee members on the next couple of Club nights and anyone wanting to borrow items is invited to enter details in the book and similarly record in the book when the item is returned and placed on the shelf from where it came. Last month I credited Clive with having donated an item. He was in fact returning a book he had taken out and entered in the record book while I was away. I was misled that the book was on the shelves without ever having been stamped as Club property and thought it must have been a new arrival. Sorry about that Clive! Another arrival in the Library was a copy of Memories magazine which featured a fine photo of a veteran car on the cover. The article inside repeated the photo, named the driver and confidently identified the vehicle as an Overland 79T. Only problem is the car is clearly a Buick of about 1913 Vintage! Grant Stewart kindly dropped off to me a copy of MTA One hundred years of Trust. 1917-2017. This book celebrates 100 years of the Motor Trade Association and comes to us courtesy of Grant’s employers Repco to whom and to Grant grateful thanks are due. It is an excellent history. 75% of the content or more relates to vehicles of our era and there are many excellent photos. The other day I picked up from the Parts Dept a bag full of little items pertaining to the Wolseley Car Club and after a bit of reorganization these have been fitted into the display shelves. Thanks to whoever donated these.
DAFFODIL DAY
We got the daffodils delivered! I would like to thank all the club members who successfully helped to deliver the cancer society flowers. We had just enough people to carry out this operation. I especially thank Norm Bunt for sorting out the runs and the envelopes. Also I especially thank Matt and Garth Haywood for taking on three delivery areas. All in all this was a successful operation. South Canterbury VCC Chairman’s Report for September 2017 Hi Everyone, Since the last Tri Car The branch successfully competed against the Ashburton Branch for the annual quiz challenge at the last Noggin &Natter. Many thanks to the Foster Team,--- Marion & John, Lex Westoby & Shannon Stevenson for Blitzing everybody with the next Sth Canty team a distant second equal. An entertaining night. A big thank you for everybody involved with the Daffodil Delivery , John Foster for organising the drivers & cars ,Norm& Ann Bunt for sorting the invoices into an easily followed sequence. Made the delivery process easy. The Cancer Run on Sunday Aug 27th has been organised by John Foster with Neil Manchester doing the Route. Nola Day for organising and drawing the raffle plus all the other members that helped on the day. A big thank you to them—Report to follow. Also all our sponsors for the Daffodil Run for Cancer who generously donated money & goods +Port FM for their advertising support so that everything raised on the day goes to the Cancer Society. Sept 3rd is the Opening run with Ashburton Branch . MID WEEK RUN 10TH AUGUST 17 cars massed at clubrooms on a fine afternoon. After a briefing we all left the clubrooms and travelled around the hospital, then through the Gardens. From there along Craigie Avenue, College Rd, Otipua Rd, Coonoor Rd and onto Fairview Rd. Down the Zig Zag to Holme Station Corner, then Gordons Valley, Frenchmans Gully, down past Maori rock drawings and lime works and back to Holme Station Corner, along Pareora River Rd into Brassells Rd. Then Summerleaze Rd, Bristol Rd and back towards Otipua and down Clay Rd. Back along Beaconsfield Rd, a short loop using Adair Sutton and Fairview Rds, then down Rocky Hundreds Rd, turning back onto Beaconsfield Rd and arriving at the Stables for afternoon tea. Over 30 sat down to tea, coffee or cold drinks in late afternoon sunshine. Many thanks to all who attended and trust you all enjoyed the run. I know we enjoyed mapping it out. Barry and Lynette.

VCC NATIONAL DAFFODIL DAY
INVERCARGILL TRUCK MUSEUM VISIT —by Grant Mehrtens
Since SCVCC came up with this charity rally for Cancer last year and was enthusiastically supported by local motorists the national VCC has adopted the rally as a national club event and as such most clubs in the country put on an event for the 27th August 2017. Our club followed on from last years concept with a rally ending up at Clayton Station north west of Fairlie. Neil Manchester planned an interesting route from Caroline Bay out through Blue Cliffs over Pareora Gorge, Cannington then out through Ma Waro and up to Fairlie. Lunch destination was the woolshed paddock at Clayton Station, the local Lions did the sausage sizzle lunch. A very pleasant late winter’s day was enjoyed by all, a pity the station owners or staff were not available to give a summary on Clayton Station, however thanks to the organising team for a very successful day with approx. 120 vehicles entered. Earlier this year with 3 others I went on a very cold & wet trip down to Invercargill to visit Bill Richardson Truck Museum, E Hayes & Sons & the new Motorcycle Mecca. All 3 displays are excellent & well set up & worth the trip. They attracted hundreds of visitors, pity they weren't in south end of Stafford St, Timaru. Richardson Museum has been recently refurbished with a new art deco exterior, the original 5 sheds are now all neatly joined together. There is a new café, wearable arts display, childrens lego room & movie theatre. The ladies had no problem finding something to do. The very early Ford collection which they purchased from Western Australia, was originally part of Ford Motor Co. USA display which they sold off in about 2008 to avoid chapter 11 proceedings. Ford tried to buy the collection back but the cunning Kiwis from Invercargill got in first. The 1904-1905 Fords have a standard bonnet & radiator set up but only the petrol tank was under the bonnet, the engines are behind the seats & low down. From 1906 the engines are up front under the bonnet.
The truck collection is extensive with many rare examples. Most of the restoration work is completed onsite & we could look into the workshop through a window but it would have been nicer to wander around it to see more detail. Thanks, Grant Mehrtens
BEHIND THE HEDGE When travelling through rural and small town USA it’s amazing what is parked up in back yards. Most seem to be left where they”stopped running”. These two photos were taken in a town in the Sierras, northern California. The Model A, not much left of it but been put on nice wheels to shift it around, the second photo some quite desirable vehicles the owner had stored in his yard, a 1954 Chev pickup a 1955 Ford F100 and a 1956 Pontiac

While looking around friend Freds area in Northern California for “behind the hedge” I was invited to drive Fred’s son’s Model A Roadster, Jarrett rode in the dicky seat and commented “how do you change gear like that?” He went on to say that he always grated the gears when changing, whereas I double de-clutched on all changes as the Model A box was non syncro like our 29 Chev. This query amazed me as Jarrett operates a forestry business driving all types of gear! Here we are in the Model A , another shot of an old garage fuel station.
