On a cool overcast day 13 cars left the club rooms travelling through the Salisbury area to Brasells Road then into Pareora River Road where we encounted a large herd of cattle heading along the road. We then travelled around the Lyalldale area, through Homestation Corner and back to the club house via Fairview/Gleniti Roads and through the Centennial Reserve. There was still a lot of autumn colour in the trees. Unfortunately one of our number broke an axle but we hope to see them back with us shortly. We then sat at the outside tables at the club rooms and enjoyed afternoon tea and a natter.

It’s great to get feed back on articles in the Tri Car. Graham Pauley called to give information on the Ford Bonus pickup featured last month, my query was “what was meant by it being called the bonus model?” Graham came up with the answer, as all American pre war, post war pickup trucks until the late 1940s were virtually only two man cabs and were quite cramped, this was the case with the Ford Jailbar, Chev models, Dodge and the KB1 International, this was due to the industry being diverted into war effort production so it wasn’t until the late 1940s that the industry was able to upgrade designs both in the truck and car field, hence pickup trucks were given a new image as farmers wanted something a bit better than a farm pickup as sometimes it was their only vehicle, they wanted more room and comfort so as to take mum and the kids to town, church etc, so Ford came up with a much roomier cab and modern looking Bonus model which was coined as Graham stated the “bonus” of a more roomier cab. The other manufacturers did likewise Chev with their new “Thriftmaster” series, Dodge with the upgraded model and International’s L series with their new Comfo -Vision cab claimed as the roomiest in the business. Thanks to Graham for his info which is why the Ford pickup of the early 1950’s was called the Bonus model.

BEHIND THE HEDGE
Recently Lex Westoby brought into the Library a number of newspaper clippings from 1926 rescued by a mate restoring an old house who found them pasted inside the wall. Adams Ltd were advertising this fine Siddeley Deasy from about 1915, originally an expensive car with Knight sleeve valve engine, a pretty good buy for 45 pounds as would have been the 1924 Studebaker Special 6 tourer partly reproduced above at 160 pounds. This would be the same as the one Alvan Jones had. Cecil Wood Co’s ad shows a new Ford T 1 ton truck optomistically described as a Speed Truck. I think anyone who has driven a T tonner would be reluctant to describe them thus. Perhaps one needs to compare them with the bigger solid tyre specimens still around at the time. A couple of ads appeared for, first of all, R A Rodgers Harley Davidson agent, and secondly, W Duncan, Timaru rep for South Island Motors Ltd (also at Waimate) offering the
1957 (APPROX) FORD CONSUL This model from Ford’s Dagenham plant in England was a budget model of the Mark 2 Zephyr but with a 4 cylinder engine. The Consul shared the Zephyr body shell but with a shorter front end and varying trim differences, tail-lights being the most obvious and mesh grille. Donald “Stick” Campbell is seen here with his Consul on the PV rally. His is considerably tidier than the one behind the hedge.

New arrivals at the Library iclude more books from Phil O’Brien yet to be processed and a donation of some excellent books from former Branch members Robert and Carolyn Gibson now of Waimate Branch. Here are some of the titles. You will note some of particular interest to enthusiasts of Cadillac and G.M. vehicles. Treasury of early American Automobiles, Standard Catalog of Cadillac 1903-2005, Cadillac Standard of the World (the definitive book by NZer Maurice Hendry) GM the first 75 years, The Nethercutt Collection Harrah’s Automobile Collection Behind the Wheel, (Lord Montagu and Wilson McComb) Spotlight on MG Down Under MGA workshop manual. And finally back to 1926 again. This ad from Farmers Co-op Motor Department advising the availability of motorspirits. Note the illustration of what would have been a fairly newfangled device, the Bowser petrol pump, already installed in Timaru and Waimate and under action for Geraldine Fairlie and Temuka. (For a long time Bowser was a synonym for petrol pump whether made by Bowser or not. Much like Nugget for shoe polish and ‘Lux for vacuum cleaner)

9 Hi fellow club members, June already, where has the last 6 months gone? It has been full on, I think retirement is busier than working as I help at the new St John’s opportunity shop in Butler St on Friday afternoons with the furniture “portfolio” and general duties plus repairs to donated items at home. Just completed a “Test & Tag “course in Christchurch to enable the shop to sell electrical items. Cycling on Tuesday’s & Thursday mornings, & so on. The major past events have been the Noggin & Natter, Ashburton Swap Meet & the PV- P80 Rally. Quite pleased with the 46 entries, could always handle more. A big thanks to Norm Bunt for doing the time trial, Alex Stewart & Shannon for helping with the field tests & Evelyn and helpers for doing the morning & afternoon teas. Coming up is the All British Day on June 3rd and the restoration run on June 17th. The Committee Plan to replace the current TV with 2 two larger screens, one in each rooms to make visual presentations easier to watch. I’m very impressed with the vast improvements in the parts shed with the sorting of the carburettors the latest completed job, A BIG well done John & the team. The Clubs AGM is coming up on Thursday July 5th so put it in your diary now, there will be committee positions that need filling so don’t be shy in putting your name forward, any questions please ask me or other committee members. Our chairman Ashley planned a very enjoyable route out south of Timaru to Esk Valley up Agnew Road out towards the Hunter Hills then wending back to Waimate via some roads none of us had been on before
“ARCH RIVALS” Chev and Ford parked nose to nose at Nottingly Park’ The destination was Knottingly Park for field tests and lunch, a very pleasant spot with the weather being quite cool but pleasant. There were a diverse range of vehicles from our own club as well as neighbouring clubs. Great to see amongst the nearly fifty entries two “new” cars on the rally, the Craigs Austin Healey, the Peter Rhodes family in their smart 1986 Ford Escort, and on the rally Colin Hawke seems to have “matured” from his Austin Healey to a more sedate Wolseley 6/110!
Last Visit of the day was to the new Waimate Events Centre’ It is certainly a grand asset for Waimate
