The Ford model TT was the first motorised unit the police used for this purpose. I saw it again in 2016 the Richardson Museum in Invercargill now own it & have it on display. To me it looked “overbodied” and the fitting of the much earlier brass framed windscreen and narrow front wheels in an endeavour to make it look older that it is, was however a disappointment to me.

MID WEEK RUN – 14TH JUNE 2018 On an overcast cool winter day 20 plus vehicles including some moderns left the club house travelling south to Makikihi where we turned towards the coast and proceeded along country roads occasionally returning to the main road to avoid rivers and creeks. Ending up in Morven, we then crossed SH1 into Gumtree Flat Road, continuing through into the Waimate Gorge, then after taking some back roads ended up at the band rotunda in Queen St for afternoon tea and a natter. Though a bit foggy in some places it was an interesting run. Thank you Clive.

Seeing the 1926 advert in last months Tricar for the Ford TT “Speed” truck and Barry Barnes comments that anyone who has driven one would be reluctant to describe it as such prompted a reply from member Graham Pauley who owned one & takes up the story. In 1978 I discovered my “Barn Find” example languishing in a shed in Temuka & became its 3rd owner. It was a 1925 Canadian assembled truck sold new by WM Hally the then Temuka district agent for Ford to Mr Jess Preddy who used it to cart coal to his threshing mills operating in the area. The second owner was Lindsay Watkins a car salesman at the NZ Motorcorp selling Morris cars from their site in Stafford street Timaru about where Noel Leemings are situated now. The truck was last used in a Temuka school centennial procession around 1967, Mr Watkins later moved to Wanganui & the Ford TT was stored in a shed until I discovered and purchased it. Fellow member Max Rose & I had it running in about an hour & I spent the next year restoring it and over the next few years attended a number of rallies in Canterbury, South Canterbury & North Otago. Originally the trucks had a optional choice of worm drive differentials, a single speed 7:1 giving a top speed of around 23 mph (40km/hr) or a two speed 5:1 Ruxell diff which mine was equiped raising the top speed to around 35mph (60km/hr). I once drove it to Christchurch to attend their Commercial Rally which took almost 5 hours and the next day the rally finished in Rangiora which necessitated a 6 hour plus drive home that night with the dull single beam headlights and the kerosene side lights lighting the way. It took me from the CHCH airport turn off to almost Hornby to overtake a cyclist & by reaching through the floor boards I could light a cigarette on the glowing cherry red exhaust manifold and front pipe a characteristic of the model. In the early 1980’s I was approached by fellow SC member Dave Thompson & his brother Barry who at the time was curator of the police museum at Porirua to purchase

South Canterbury Branch Vintage Car Club of NZ Chairman’s Annual Report 2017/18 Another click on the odometer of life has passed and I suppose that most of us don’t want to be reminded of it. This my first annual report for 25 years ,I have enjoyed being back in the thick of things. The club continues to be in good heart and events and rallies well attended. Whilst researching my report, I took the time to read through back issues of the Tri Car, I’m astounded at the number of events our members have participated in during the past year. The National South Island Easter Rally in Invercargill was well supported by our branch with quite a bit of “silverware” coming back with them. There should be an event or run to suit all members & it would be great to see some different cars come out of hibernation. The committee will continue to tweak future events to make them more appealing such shifting the Night Trial date to the darker months. This year’s 50th Mystery Run brought the end of an era for these well attended events organised by Joan & the late Russell Paul assisted by Colin Lyon, a great way of exploring our district. I would like to acknowledge the members stepping down from their committee role , Immediate past chairman John Foster who has commuted in from Winchester for the past 8 years .John intends to continue organising the Cancer Society Run. Frances Irving is not re standing for committee but will continue in an ex officio role as membership secretary John Campbell stepping aside from the Parts Manager role Darren Ladbrook for his year as Club Captain John Knowles , for ably chairing the Swap Meet Committee. I would like all members to acknowledge the efforts made by all committee members in keep the club on the “road” and attending the monthly committee meetings. The Club’s front garden has been expertly attended by Eric Robbins , keeping the exterior of the Clubrooms looking great. The Wednesday Parts Shed team have done an amazing job re sorting & thinning out the contents making most things easy to find, must be one the most organised sheds in NZ Shona & Bill Weir have done a consistently amazing job producing the interesting Tri Car ,It must be the Best VCC club magazine in the country. We are very lucky to have their input. The club rooms TV’s have been upgraded to 2 x55” 4G sets, one in each room

to make watching presentations more enjoyable. Their first live demo will be at the August N&N when Oliver Irving will give a presentation on the recent “Irishman’s “Rally.
The role of club captain is vacant as I write this, it is an important and rewarding role involving organising 3 major rallies plus other smaller events. The Committee are very supportive to the incumbent person. So don’t be shy putting your name forward. Club members have completed a good number of restorations this year which is very pleasing, making the awarding of the Restoration of the Year Trophy challenging , the Concours judging sheets have been used to
reach the conclusion. In Conclusion , I look forward to the next year and dealing with any challenges that arise and motor my cars as much as possible. Ashley Milliken

Library Annual Report June 2018
The 2017/18 year has been another steady one for the Library with 222 items donated and processed during the year. Donations came from many sources but major donations came from Graeme Nind, Ashley Southgate and Phil O’Brien. All donors are gratefully acknowledged. Duplicated magazines have been progressively left out for members to remove and steadily disappeared. Borrowing has been steady with items being taken out and brought back each Club Night. A thank you to borrowers who have been returning items regularly without need for prompting. Items for placement in the display cases continue to trickle in and there is not much room left. The Library has many old colour slides most taken by the late Bill Piddington. These have been largely identified and catalogued and some have also been copied onto computer, work that is ongoing. Hi fellow members Well the frosts over the weekend were a bit of a wake up call, I ran a timing crew to assist the SC Car Club with their Rally last Saturday, we were in position at the Bluecliffs Road end of Mile Cutting at 6.30 am !! BRRR. Thank you Barry Smith & Ross Walkinshaw for their able assistance + John Graham from Vaughan Motors. Our second stage and Gudex Road end of Middle Valley Rd at 11 am was much more pleasant. Two Major events were held in June, The ALL BRITISH day attracted 112 entries despite the British weather on the day & the Restoration Run was well attended. Thanks to Neil and all the helpers that made these events successful. The AGM is on July 5th & the Quiz night with Ashburton is in August at Ashburton so think about getting your teams together. This will be based at Methven. Accommodation is available, especially the through large number of holiday homes advertised on the internet. Google “Accommodation Methven” which will bring up Bookabach, Holiday Homes, along with other options at the camping ground, motels, the 2 hotels etc. On Saturday will be a touring day travelling off the main road hopefully stopping at some places of interest with the option of an evening meal at either the Blue Pub or the Brown Pub. Recommendations on which one, welcome! Sunday, I am thinking of a brunch at one of the cafes then a bit of a jaunt around the district followed by a communal meal on Sunday night. Monday head for home. Instructions and other details provided to participants, prior to event. As usual, no entry fee, no entry form, nothing compulsory. Easy paced and suitable for older vehicles. PARTS DEPARTMENT ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2017/18 Over the last 12 months steady progress has been made on a number of projects. We have replaced the rotten floor of 1 Container and fitted a new roof on another, as it was leaking. Thanks to Les Wenlock, Alan Holland and Barry Smith for this. We have fitted a number of new shelves to better display electrical equipment, such as Distributor Caps, Points, Condensors, Rotors etc. Once again I must thank Warren Cox for mowing the lawns, vacuuming the carpet in the Parts Shed and most importantly of all, making the morning tea!! Special thanks also to Eric Robins for all his good work in maintaining the gardens so well. Dick Edwards is another who uses his expertise well in locating part numbers and identifying parts, particularly rare and obscure parts. This is a great help in knowing what we actually have in stock. Thanks also to Jim Geddes, Barry Yates, Norm Bunce and all who helped at the annual Swap Meet. Without their support it would’ve been chaotic. Although I have made special mention of some of our Wednesday team, I heartily appreciate all the group who pitch in to do any job needing done, mainly without being asked. It has been my pleasure to work with such a wonderful bunch of blokes over the last 4 years. As I believe all managerial positions should be rotated from time to time, I will be standing down this year in favour of Clive Merry who will take over. I intend to become one of the ‘regular Wednesday team’ and will assist Clive an anyway I can. I have enjoyed my time as Parts Manager and have great admiration for the regular commitment of all who participate in the running of our Club and the Parts Shed in particular. With a trip soon into Richard17 Pearse country, Waitohi, it was onto Temuka – minding the detour near the school – and out into Fonterra central, Clandeboye. Headed onto Muff Road to reach Orari, it was due west to the northern outreaches of Geraldine. With a flying trip through the Woodbury district, the end venue of Pleasant Valley Hall was soon – quickly for a couple of the Jaguars – reached. Unlike Timaru, the weather out Pleasant Valley was much improved – no rain, and one could see the sun almost to the west. The hall itself, was no stranger to a car contingent, having already seen our 2017 Opening Run. When looking inside the hall, built 1922, one could only wonder the stories that its walls could tell from decades of countless functions, country dances and family reunions. The carpark, although compact at first glance, managed to swallow up most vehicles, with a paddock with abandoned tennis court alongside and the grass out front swallowing the rest. Outside the hall, Geraldine Primary School parents and children helpers did a roaring trade with their hamburger cafe fundraiser – complete with several mouthwatering flavouring options. With heaters roaring away inside, a fair few of us met around the tables and chairs set up within. The vehicles themselves kept many entertained for awhile – this author being enthralled by a 1953 Bentley R Type which had an interior far more lounge than car. For some, this meant under the hood – the Roddick's MGB seen being attended to by Alan Ferguson's 'never sold new in NZ' Vauxhall Cavalier, not to mention one or two others with various 'failing-to-proceed' issues. By mid-afternoon prizegiving was held, and a number of lucky participants went away armed with period automotive accessories from the stage. On Sunday June 3, our Annual Queen's Birthday 'celebration' took place. For this day, organized by Neil Manchester and supporters, the weather gods promised typical 'dreary British winter rainswept weather', and at Caroline Bay, they delivered. This of course did not thwart 112 owners of British vehicles, a fair few soon materializing after 8:30 am, with the Northern Carpark filled by 9:30. There were a fair variety to behold – including too many Triumphs to keep track of, a Commer camper, an 'army' of Fords, Rootes and BMC products, a contigent of Jaguars from the deep south, and rare machinery – one example being Lex Westoby's 1930 Alvis. Armed with lolly-filled instruction packs, raffle tickets sold by the Luscombes' and given a briefing by Ashley and team, the contingent was soon 'hitting the road', headed due south-west out of Timaru, and out into Fairview, through Claremont and Taiko, and over Clelands's Hill to reach Totara Valley and Pleasant Point – a refreshment (and chance for

END of SEASON – RESTORATION RUN Editor Bill It wasn’t a very encouraging Sunday morning for a car run being cold and dismal, however a very good turnout showed up, approx. 20 vehicles, even Lex Westoby participated on his YAMAHA motorcycle, albeit a more modern one than his usual vintage bike. This year has produced the largest number of club restorations for some time four of which were presented on the End of Season Restoration Run
comprising of Neil Manchester’s Fiat 124 which won the Rose Bowl on its first time out at Fairlie New Years day parade. First time seen on a VCC event was John Austin’s Toyota Sprinter, this car is based on the Corolla Coupe of the era but with a more “up market” specification. They were not sold here new, Johns one being imported privately when new, this example has been detailed up by John to perhaps better than new condition.

The Munros were also present proudly motoring the 1930 Chev Tourer which they acquired from their great friend the late Robert Bray’s estate. It’s certainly good to see this car kept in our club. However the garaging arrangements concern me a little, “Do the Model A Ford and the Chev share the same garage or do they need separated in the name of good relations!”

Neil Manchester put together an interesting route out through west Timaru, Levels Valley, Pleasant Point, Waitohi, Earl Road and across to the Hilton Hall for lunch,and the “plus”, out into the sun especially after two weeks of miserable weather on the coast at Timaru. Well done Neil. Some “new” vehicles also showed up on the day, a 1929 Graham Paige motored by the Chapman family (shown on the front cover of the Tri Car), apparently it was owned by Paul’s father, it’s a nice old car in very good condition, not sure how Paul will manage the big six cylinder after the little four cylinder Morris 1000!
John Foster is always coming up with something different, this time the Fosters arrived in a Triumph TR3 Roadster recently purchased from a Timaru owner. The
Triumph is in great condition with very good leather upholstery and nicely detailed engine bay, not sure about the “bungy” battery strap though!
11 The next vehicle of note was Eddie Craig’s Austin Healey, the Craig’s motored the car on the PV run back in May in top down mode and were very brave travelling again with the top down on Sunday. This car as mentioned in the last Tri Car has been a long time project for Eddie and is a fine example of the Model, and doesn’t it sound great!! I hate to admit it but it has a “burble” better than a V/8!
The Whippet Roadster of Phil Lawrence’s was also on the run and is a very smart looking vehicle. This has been a “bare bones” restoration starting from the chassis up, with quite a bit of panel work required but seeing the finished result certainly well worth the effort. Other restorations that have shown up throughout the year have been Colin Lyon’s 1925 DeLage, Gavin Ladbrook’s 1938 Dodge Coupe, Keith Gray’s 1911 Overland and Alistair Day’s Hillman Super Minx, all excellent examples of their marques. These cars have all been featured in earlier issues of Tri Car.
