Another AGM has gone, with this year’s meeting going very quickly and smoothly. A good financial performance on top of a lot of activities provided has certainly met with general favour. I would like to thank those who retired from this year’s committee for their service, Angie Brunton, Steve de Jeu and Darryl Stretch. I would also like to welcome Cliff Wickham and Bob Mackay back to the committee table. We do have one small hiccup however, we did not have any nominations for Club Captain on the night, and we had a single nomination for Assistant Club Captain (in absentia). As we did not receive any nominations from the floor it was agreed to ask Kevin Scott if he would take on the role of Club Captain rather than Assistant, but Kevin’s work load precludes his regular availability. So we are yet again on the hunt for a Club Captain, who will be ably supported by Kevin and the rest of the committee. If you have any interest in helping the branch in this role, please give me or Kevin a call. The AGM gave some direction to the incoming committee regarding activities for the next 12 months, and these will be taken on board. We have an exciting few months ahead with the Swap Meet next month, the Sulphur City Rally in August, and the “Wanganui Weekend” long club rally in November. More on that later in this issue. As well as May’s Club Captain’s Run, which was a poker run too, and our midweekers run, many club members attended the Pink Breakfast at the club rooms organised by Angie Brunton. I believe the morning raised over $900 for the Breast Cancer Foundation. June’s run will conclude with prize giving at the Distinction Hotel, with a cost of $16 per person for the afternoon tea. A further reminder that July’s club night has been brought forward to 2

the first Wednesday of the month (the 5th) in order that we can finalise volunteers and instructions for the Swap Meet on July 9th. I hope all members can help with this event in some way, as it literally subsidises all members by over $100 annually, and without this event being successful the branch would simply not exist. The Sulphur City Rally is only two months away now, and entry forms should be in the club house by our June club night. The entry form is also online on the branch website, but still needs to be filled out with pen and paper for now. If you are interested in the weekend away in Wanganui in early November please read the item later in this issue, accommodation will be your responsibility and there will be some advantage if most attending can stay at the same motels. It will be a good weekend away. I would like to finish by thanking all those who contributed to, or took part in, club activities in the last year, and hope as many members as possible take part in the activities provided over the next 12 months.

Vero Insurance subsidizes our subs
Vero Insurance return a portion of club members’ insurance premiums to the branch. Last year this amounted to $1813 and helped keep our branch subs down. They are $10 and have been for as long as I can remember, largely due to the Swap Meet. I have found Vero’s premiums to be the most competitive and relatives in Christchurch with a total house and contents loss advised that they had a good response to their claim. To ensure that the branch receives their portion you need to quote your membership number which I can give you. It is also on the address label on the Side Curtains mail out. Use of the Clubrooms for family events
The committee reaffirmed the position that the clubrooms can be used for branch members’ family events at no cost. They can also be used for other events by clubs that a member belongs to, providing the branch member is present. There is a charge for this and a request needs to be made to the committee.

Good advertising meant that the Hawkes bay clubrooms were packed in early May with punters from all around the North Island. 180 lots of memorabilia and collectables raised around $20,000. You just don’t know how valuable your shed junk can be.

Midweek Run - 24th May
Members assembled at the clubrooms on 24 May for morning tea with 12 cars. British ones predominated but 3 modern ones kept their occupants warm on a cold and sometimes wet day. An enjoyable drive took us up Dansey Road to Mamaku. We didn’t stop there (cloud was down to ground level) but carried back from the plateau via Oturoa Road - pleasant driving on good, quiet roads. Back in town we headed to Rotorua’s Lakeside Cafe where we had prime parking on the forecourt - we could gaze at our cars while enjoying our lunch. Gloria and I and our Triumph 2000 had last been together there in 1976 - it had been the venue for our wedding reception. The building and I have changed a bit since then but I am sure Gloria and the car look much the same. On then to the Fire Service’s national training centre in the business park opposite the airport. We were shown over much of the complex where recruits from all over New Zealand take intensive 12-week courses learning how to be firemen. And training never stops: refreshers and updates continue throughout their careers. We were impressed with the high professional standards required for what is a very specialized and dangerous occupation. Buildings representing houses, blocks of flats and business premises are arranged in streets on the site - all used for training in fire extinguishing and rescue operations. It even contains Rotorua’s only metropolitan railway system - well, there is Driving Trailer D2462 from a retired 1952 English Electric multiple unit set last used on the Wellington - Johnsonville line. It was bought for $1 but towing it to Tauranga and trucking it on to Rotorua was not cheap. A short length of track over a railway crossing provides the scene for training firemen in rescuing occupants of cars in collisions with trains or from railway carriages. Our thanks to Brett of the Fire Service for spending so much time explaining the operation to us, and to Cliff Wickham for organising the visit. Ronald Mayes

November 2017 Spring Tour & Whanganui Weekend
With a number of members asking for confirmed dates for the tour it was confirmed at the May committee meeting and that I would plan the Wanganui trip in November. It will be arranged along the same lines as previous Spring Tours where members are free to join the whole or any part of the programme. Members are free to stay where ever they choose and should make their own arrangements directly with the motels, the motels listed below are suggestions, places members have stayed at previously and presently have vacancies. With pressure already on the motels in Feilding for the Thursday night (9th November) the mid week group will stay in Taihape the first night and drive on to Whanganui via Feilding visiting places of interest in the Feilding area on the Friday. If you intend to take part in this event it is strongly recommended that you book accommodation at an early date (like urgently). We will stay in Whanganui on Friday November 10th and Saturday 11th with a full day of activities on the Saturday and concluding around midday Sunday. The Whanganui programme is being arranged in association with (I should really say “by�) Ed Boyed of the Whanganui Club for which I am very grateful. Midweek Run 28th June 2017 – Midwinter lunch If you prefer to sit down for morning tea bring your picnic chairs for morning tea at 10am in the shed at 43 Oturoa Road. Following morning tea we will take a scenic drive to a café for our midwinter lunch. After lunch we will hopefully, subject to confirmation visit either a car restorer or a vehicle of interest.
GOOD NEWS! The ACC component of the annual licence fee for our 40+ years old cars drops from July and the total if you pay online goes down from $48.75 to $44.00. That helps to lower the fixed annual car ownership costs a little, just leaving insurance and six-monthly Warrants of Fitness to cause some pain in our hip pocket nerves. - Ronald Mayes
