What a busy month June was, and with the Swap Meet almost upon us, and a Special General Meeting regarding our VCC branch levy, July is shaping up to be even busier. On club night we had Terry Wadsworth’s Holden ute in the room, which is pictured on the cover of this issue. In July we will have the recently renovated Princess 1100 of Ronald and Gloria Mayes on display, and in August the car on display will be a 1960s Mercedes-Benz that belongs to a local car collector. We have covered the SGM in the last issue of Side Curtains, but in a nutshell the AGM unanimously supported for the levy to be changed to $30 per year. If you want to have your say on this motion, please be in attendance at the July club night. It will affect you directly with a possible change to the amount you pay for your VCC subscription in October. The June run started with a very moving presentation of 25 Year badges to Cliff and Shona Wickham, and after a short run concluded with our annual prize giving at the club rooms. The results of prize giving are elsewhere in this issue. In addition to your support at the Swap Meet in July I hope many branch members take the opportunity to be involved in the Sulphur City Rally at the end of August. At the time of this issue going to press we have entries from branch members and a few already from other branches. At the end of October the mid-weekers will have their four day Spring Tour and progress continues on the combined run with other nearby branches for our November club run. Lastly, we are still looking for someone to organise our Daffodil Day event which is on the Sunday of the Sulphur City Rally. 2

Reminder of the Special General Meeting of the Rotorua Vintage & Veteran Car Club Inc A Branch Special General Meeting will be held at 7.30pm on 4th July 2018 at the Rotorua VCC Clubrooms, Neil Hunt Park, Rotorua. Agenda item: At the 2018 Branch AGM it was discussed that our existing branch levy of $10 is the lowest of any in the country and is not meeting the needs of our branch operating costs. The national average is $30. It was resolved at the AGM that a motion be put to a monthly meeting that the branch levy for the next financial year be raised to $30.
IMPORTANT - Side Curtains magazine The 2018 Branch AGM resolved that Side Curtains be reduced to a print run of 50 copies each month and the hard copies will be available for collection from the clubrooms. Members wishing to continue to have a hard copy of the magazine posted out each month will be required to pay $45 per year to the branch. The magazine will continue to be published online each issue, and notification that an issue has been placed online will go on the branch Facebook page. We can also email the magazine to branch members, it is about 8Mb generally, upon request. The magazine page of the branch website has PDF versions available to read or download of every issue of Side Curtains since March 2014. This issue of Side Curtains (July 2018) is the last that will be printed and posted to all branch members. If you do not regularly attend branch meetings and wish to continue to receive the printed version of Side Curtains each month please contact Secretary Dennis before the end of July so we can arrange an invoice for the $45 fee and put you on the mailing list. Hire of the clubrooms
We have been approached by the Rotorua Branch of Creative Fibre – The New Zealand Spinning, Weaving and Woolcrafts Society Inc who would like to use our clubrooms on a twice weekly basis throughout the year. Tuesday evenings and Thursday mornings. Their group is not dissimilar to our club in age and enthusiasm except they are mainly but not exclusively women. Alan Judd’s wife George and ex member Jan Hossack (Ian’s widow) are on their committee. Our committee is looking favourably on their request as they will take good care of the clubrooms and provide another income stream. It will be discussed at the July branch meeting before the final decision is made.
Little Billy and his Dad were at a local car club gymkhana watching the MGBs zipping around the cones. Little Billy looks up to his Dad and says, “Dad, when I grow up, I want to be a MGB driver.” His Dad looks down at him and says, “You can’t do both, son.” 4

June Car in the Room

1975 Holden 1 ton Tabletop ute Terry Wadsworth entertained us with a great description of the rebuild of the now very tidy ute. Previously he had a Chev V8 powered Holden ute but he was always worried where he parked it as all the goodies made it an attractive target. 5 years ago Terry won a Trademe auction for the disassembled vehicle. The owner agreed to do a minimum assembly to enable it to be trailered back to Rotorua. Terry completely stripped and repainted the vehicle. It had a matching number 253 V8 motor which was going to be replaced with a reconditioned 308 V8 that Terry had won in a separate auction. It was then that the realities of Trademe auctions hit home. The 308 was not reconditioned as described and after a lot of phone calls, Terry luckily enough did get his money back. So the original 253 V8 was reconditioned and fitted along with extractors which give out that signature V8 throb. The gearbox was automatic and in good condition. Terry suspects that originally it would have had a 4 speed manual gearbox. The upholstery required renewal so he had Craig Goodrick do it to a very high standard. The tray is an original all aluminium table top unit. Wheels were left standard to ensure good ground clearance as this is not just a club runs vehicle. Economy was a bit of a problem at around 16 litres per 100 km (18 miles per gallon). Terry had an LPG kit that was then fitted and makes it much more economical. It is a great 43 year old vehicle that can be readily used for everyday use.

Cliff and Shona Wickam 25 Year Badge Presentation Cliff and Shona were presented with their VCC 25 Year badges at the beginning of the Prize Giving Run on 17 June at The Gardens in Pukehangi. There was a great turn out of branch members and friends, with over 50 people in the room for the presentation. Cliff is a former branch Chairman (and bar manager!), and Shona has previously been the branch Social Convenor. Their names adorn many of the branch trophies and they have attended many rallies around the country. After the presentation Shona gave a short speech which is reproduced below. Cliff and I would like to thank the club members for being with us to have our 25 year badges presented together. The Rotorua Vintage Car Club has been a big part of our lives since we moved from Whakatane to Rotorua. We have met a lot of awesome people whom have become good friends. We have travelled a lot throughout New Zealand and seen so much of our beautiful country, people, awesome collections and been able to go to lots of places that being car club members we were privileged to see. We have enjoyed our Ford Prefect, Anglia, and Cortina vehicles with lots of fabulous memories. We wish you all lots of safe motoring and happy memories in the years to come with all your amazing cars. Cliff and Shona Wickham. 6

June 27 Midweek Run by Ronald Mayes We never know where we are going on these runs until we get the instructions! For this one we knew it was to be somewhere for lunch and it wasn’t until café-finding expert Maurie revealed that we would be driving to Awakeri that we knew the route we would take, so we looked forward to a pleasant drive. We are always told to pull over and let faster traffic overtake but this time several of us were held up all around Lake Rotoiti and beyond by a camper van and an SUV towing a caravan in convoy at low speeds - they had left Neil Hunt park just before us (after staying overnight?) and by the time one or the other finally pulled over a long queue had built up. Thereafter some of us enjoyed brisk motoring through the Rotoma hills but I soon discovered that a Triumph 2500 doesn’t have quite the cornering abilities of a certain green Triumph Stag. Maybe it would be worth fitting that anti-roll bar I have on hand. The Triumph disgraced itself by stalling when we stopped for road works by Lake Rotoma, but started up ok and ran well after that, although I must obviously “get around” to oiling the carburettors’ spindles. When we stopped at the café (The White Goose) I was told I would lose points by opening the bonnet while on a run. A long table had been set up for us and all seemed to enjoy their meals. The staff did have trouble sorting out who had ordered what when they came out to serve everyone but I think all eventually received what they had ordered. There must have been 25 or more members on the run and Evan and Wyn’s Morris Minor was the oldest car, certainly from Rotorua, but I regret I didn’t record the year of Les and Thelma Forward’s Minor which they had driven from Whakatane.
And more from Bob Mackay on the June Midweek Run After a few very miserable and wet days the dawn broke with a heavy frost and lots of icy roads. By the time we met at 10am for morning tea at the club rooms the sky was bright and sunny with the ice well gone. The warm sun was enjoyed along with coffee and tea by sixteen members gathered round the front of the club rooms with no thought for the three ladies stuck in the cold kitchen. With the lights off and the club rooms locked we drove to ‘Little Goose Eatery’ at Awakeri for lunch to be met by Les and Thelma in the Morris Minor; making a total seven club cars and three modern. As a country café in the middle of the week during winter it was fairly quiet, but with party of 21 arriving just before 12 noon that all changed while the kitchen staff working wonders to serve everyone. With everyone fed and few other customers present there was little pressure to leave so good fellowship followed with the last of our members leaving almost two and a half hours after they arrived. 8

June 17 Prize-Giving Run by Ronald Mayes It was rewarding see such a large number of members bringing their cars to The Gardens retirement village and hospital for a special event on this Sunday morning: the awarding of 25-year membership badges to Cliff and Shona Wickham. Cliff has been cared for there since unfortunately suffering a stroke in January and is confined to a wheelchair. Chairman Dave presented their badges and read a speech prepared by Shona. Following this very moving and for many an emotional occasion Cliff was able to meet with many old friends and was taken out to the street to see all of the cars depart on the run. The non-competitive run took us back along Pukehangi Rd and then the length of Fenton St before driving out to the Blue Lake, around Lake Okareka, and on to the clubrooms for the catered lunch and the prize-giving. Unlike last year when I was embarrassed by receiving no less than 4 trophies (after which I hastened to propose joint membership for my navigator Gloria) others won them all this year and the trophy winners were duly photographed. I forgot, at the time, to mention the fun I had checking the scores of the participants in this year’s Night Run which we had to set after winning last year. Some of the top scorers had very close counts indeed and the highest score was the very neatly filled in entry by Shona and her daughter Sandra. Unfortunately their modern Corolla was just too young for eligibility for the trophy. Side Curtains July 2018

Wednesday July 25th Meet at the club rooms for morning tea at 10 am. The day will be a mystery tour to a Mystery Café (the true definition of Mystery = the organiser is still to organised something and looking for ideas).
Tuesday August 28th PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF DAY. August is a busy month for the club;- the Sulphur City Rally, flower deliveries for Daffodil Day, and the promotion by National VVCC for a “display/fund raiser” event in association with the Cancer Society. The midweek run will take the form of the Daffodil Delivery with members meeting at a café for Lunch. Angela Brunton is co-ordinating the Daffodil deliveries and has been approached for more help than in previous years as the Courier Company that has previously helped is no longer in a position to assist. Depending on the number of volunteers it may be necessary to extend deliveries into the afternoon. More details to follow but please keep this date free.
Wednesday September 26th Looking for a volunteer to organise the day (other than the one I see in the mirror). If these midweek runs are to remain a success it requires input from more than Maurie and myself.
Spring Tour - Monday October 29th - Friday November 2nd The Spring Tour will take us to Gisborne for two nights before we take the inland road to Wairoa and then continuing on to Napier for two nights returning to Rotorua on Friday 2nd November.
