CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
I
was reading Beaded Wheels the other day, and the President’s Message struck a chord with me. She asked a few questions: do branches have too many events? What type of events do people enjoy most? Have they changed from the past?
We have asked you these questions before with little response, but maybe this time you would reply. I know many of us balance VCC events with those of one make clubs, but our participants have not been as many as last year. She also commented on participation within the branches: the reward of participating and the comradeship of like-minded people taking their turn to give back to the club from which they have benefitted. She appealed to members to get more involved. (It helps keep the grey cells alive!) The retiring committee look forward to new and energetic colleagues to join us. Nominations forms were in last month’s Newsletter, so find someone to nominate - or why not put yourself forward? We need new officers but they would not be left to cope alone: experience and help will be available whenever needed. At this stage I would like to thank the committee for their help and support this year. It has not been easy to follow in the footsteps of Leon and the turbulence has not helped. I am prepared to continue if only to enjoy a quiet and optimistic year! But it is a team that we need, as this will give the best to members. With the seasons changing we move to our winter programme. Our first midweek café is at Bayside Café on the beach at Snell’s Beach on 1st May. Club night on 9th May will have speakers following our first Pot Luck dinner. The BBQ has been cleaned and tucked away until the Winter Woollies when we will use it for Bacon Butties before the start on Saturday and for the BBQ lunch on Sunday so we will be needing some help with this please. On 19th May we have the Triple Combined Rally, which is starting with us this year and heading south: a good way to get into practice for the Winter Woollies Wander in July. There are also other events to look forward to in June. I look forward to catching up with everyone and hearing how the Twilight Run went when I return from the jungle. RALLY PROGRAMME The 2019 Winter Woollies will be held over both sealed and gravel roads and will cover approximately 110 miles. Entrants may choose a competitive or non-competitive touring route. It’s recommended that entrants start with a reasonably full tank of fuel as there will be no stops until after lunch. RALLY STARTS AT :

Open to all Vintage Car Club eligible vehicles

Entrants must be financial members of V.C.C.N.Z. or other V.C.C. recognised club, or have received an official invitation.

Traffic regulations must be observed, drivers licenses and current membership cards will be carried on the Rally.
4.
The starters may refuse to start any vehicle that fails to meet the stated requirements.

Any complaints or disputes must be placed before the Committee on the day of the Wander.

MYSTERY MOTORS
W
hat car is this ?
April’s Mystery Motor was a Toyota 2000GT and it was a rare beast as only 351 were produced. Most of the 2000GT's design was done by Yamaha which also did much automobile work for other Japanese manufacturers. A prototype 2000GT was built and offered to Nissan who declined it. Yamaha then proposed the design to Toyota who, wishing to improve their image, accepted the proposal but employed a design from their own designer. Satoru Nozaki Nozaki's bodywork was inspired by the E-Type Jaguar and its smoothly flowing bodywork was executed in alumninium and featured pop-up headlights above large plexiglass covered driving lamps flanking the grille. The car was extremely low, just 116 cm to the top of the roof. A special open version was built for the movie You Only Live Twice as Sean Connery could not fit in the closed car. The motor was a 1,988 cc straight 6 from the Toyota Crown sedan but Yamaha transformed it with a DOHC head into a 110 KW | 175 NM sports car engine capable of 135 MPH. It was produced 1967-70 and is regarded as the first Japanese supercar.

I
bought my Buick from Bill Cogland, who lived up north, in 1995 but the car was stored at Birkenhead in a carport at his daughter’s home. I knew his daughter as she worked at the company I contracted to. The car became mine on 5th January and, when my son and I went to collect it, his daughter asked to drive the car one last time to my home in Albany. She leapt into the car and took off — where did she go? Who knows, but she had parked the car and was waiting on the footpath when we arrived home. I don’t think Stirling Moss could have kept up with her! We had a lot of un driving the car (named Betsy) and did quite a few kilometres, but like all old cars Betsy started to play up a bit—nothing major but just annoying things—and of course getting parts is a bit like finding needle in a haystack. We continued to drive Betsy for a few more years and then she needed a valve grind and the head planed etc. I ordered the gasket set from the USA—and then waited and waited. Nothing came so I emailed them and found it had been sent to Silverdale in Australia. When it finally arrived it had been folded in half and Australian Customs had drilled holes in it looking drugs. All of this attention was rather detrimental for a copper head gasket and manifold gaskets. Another e-mail and finally we received our gaskets— not a copper set but fibre. Yahoo, frustrations over—oops, not yet. We fitted all the parts together and fired old Betsy into life, but not a happy life: she hiccupped and coughed—not good. What could it be? Went through the normal process of plug wires one at a time. Aha—no.2 cylinder: did we break a ring when we put new ones in, or what? Compression in no.2 nothing: bugger! Off with the head. Of course the gaskets are useless so need new ones again. Had

them made here in NZ for three times the price. When we checked the valves we found no.2 guides were too long and the valves not closing properly. Back to the reconditioner! Motoring again at last—yippee—going well. Hang on, the right rear brake has oil on the linings. Pull it apart and renew the linings and seals etc. Back on the road for testing the external band brakes, we went down Wainui Road and stopped to let my son drive her home. He put her into gear - then bang! What the hell is that? I know: axle in two pieces: yep. Called all the clubs in NZ and got two axles, now have to fit them all together and reset the crown wheels etc. Back to driving for a bit then oil on the right rear again. Same process: realign seals, that will fix it. But no, oil seals not running true so had to machine up a new hub centre for the seal as we were now using neoprene for the seal and not felt which is maybe a little more forgiving. Now we are motoring again. Betsy is great to drive, cruising at 70 kmh down the motorway but we have to keep an eye on the speedo as she wants to creep up all the time. Sometimes I take my wife shopping in Betsy but when she has finished and is ready to go home the car is not where she expects Betsy to be—I am taking people for rides around the supermarket car-park. Thanks to all who have helped over the years. Love you, Betsy. Engine: 207.1 cu inch six cylinder, bore 31/2 x stroke 41/2 inch; 63 HP, diff 4.9:1; fuel tank 17 US gallons. Wheelbase 1141/2inches; tyre size 31 x 5.75; external contracting brakes on all 4 wheels; rear axle 3/4 floating on cantilever springs; top speed 65-70 MPH.

HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY, HARRY!

n Sunday 28th April heaps of Harry’s friends & family gathered at the Wellsford Fire Station to celebrate his 90th birthday. Harry was a founder member of the Wellsford branch of the VCC and his son Gary gave an amusing speech based on various numbers. It turns out that 4 was the number of times Harry had needed to take the engine out of his 1950 Citroen Light 15 and also the number of hours needed to do it. Appropriately, a model of the Citroen made of icing sugar sat on top of his birthday cake.
