Chairman’s Report Last Sunday our Club had a very successful run to Naseby-Waipiata, then to Clachanburn Garden, Patearoa. I'm sure there will be a full report in this P&S , but to see 17 cars and up to 50 members tells me a lot about what our members want. Our ladies need to be catered for and entertained just as much us blokes. This was very well received by our fairer sex by their smiles and the way they got involved, was just great. But if I may comment, the only omen of the run, was travelling long distances we need to have a solid system of staying together when travelling as a group, especially in the form of destination expectation as many cars got lost, self included. On Saturday the 15th Ewan Duthie and myself had another serious attempt at finishing our clubroom's roof flashings and spoutings. This has been a very drawn out process due mainly to our foundation member George Page being the organizer of this project, having a work-related accident and was unable to finish the work. The work was taken back by the committee to finish, and thus ably taken over by Ewan Duthie, but due to work and family commitments he has done his best with assistance from others but this has taken quite a while. The very expensive colour steel flashings and spoutings has now broken down the plastic protective covering and made it very hard to removed. So in the very near future, we need some members to come to a working bee to remove the said plastic. But in the meantime, we are putting the remainder undercover out of the Central Otago sun. I hope everybody read my November Chairman's report which included my thoughts of having a group of interested members meeting maybe once a week to a hobby-related workshop at the clubrooms. John Martin assisted by two keen members are in the process of putting this into action. I hope interested members support this group as it will be a good way of getting not only retired members but anyone with spare time to bond with like-minded members and upscale their activities. MINUTES FROM COMMITTEE MEETING COVCC Committee meeting 5 Feb 2020, commencing @ 7:30p.m.

Minutes from previous meeting: Minutes were read and accepted. Matters arising – Murray, John and Rodger went to last council meeting. Correspondence received regarding Status of lease renewal. Proposed that the lease be 15 years reviewed every 5 years. Will be presented at April council meeting. Graham moved. Seconded Karelan. Permit for Highlands – VCC. Greg organizing and entries going out. Membership list has been sent out by Graham to committee members. Moved Graham. Seconded Lynne Noel Constitution: Added in about banking, and liability clause. Now to go to AGM, and then to National Office. Needs to be sent out with AGM notice. Latest copy 27 Jan up to date. Invoices must be approved and seconded by two members of the committee. Don thanked Noel on the behalf of the committee for all his time and efforts, and expertize in updating our COVCC Constitution. Correspondence: Karelan received a Valuation which showed a land value of 320,000 Land value, Improvements of 161,000.
Land previously 37,000. 0.4217 Hectares – Karelan has enquired about the land size. 2.5 Hectares. New rate demand back to the correct land size. Council has assured Karelan that it is all correct now. Karelan to send an e-mail. Murray to collect an objection form from council and send to Karelan to complete. New spouting: Ewen to finish the job with Murray. Ewen has requested verandah boards to be restained. Murray will communicate with Ewen.

Chairman’s report: New members. Two folk have requested to become members. Members are to vet new members before applications are sent to National office. Graham sends information to people enquiring about membership, directing them to the website, and sending Puff ‘n Stuff, as well as inviting them to meetings. Greg Doran moved that we add a by-law: Members who are proposing a new member must attend at least two club events with the new member prior to them completing their membership forms. Seconded: Noel Hassed Don to add this to the Puff ‘n Stuff. Arrowtown Autumn Festival 18 April: Alistair - Entry forms need to go into Feb / March Puff ‘n Stuff. Nothing to report at present. John Martin - Thompson’s Track possibly one of the days of Easter – not Walter Peak as this is better as a weekend trip. Conscious that Warbirds is on, as is Speedway. Meet at Tarras. Events: Blossom Festival – discussion on combining this with 50th Anniversary celebrations. Good idea as this was one of the first rallies that the club organized. First meeting of club held at the Dunstan Hotel. Could go to Dunstan Hotel for a meal. Invite past members, members and rally entrants. Venues would require booking shortly. Need to find out if venues available, when they’re open, and how many they can cater for. Murray, Ewen, and Alan Porter – Blossom Festival organizers. Noel suggested that some of the members from that area might like to assist. Karelan suggested a subcommittee be formed. Graham will look at a few venues on his way to Gore and report back to committee. The Packing Shed, Orchard Gardens venues suggested by John. Off-road parking an advantage. John discussed Open Shed and starting this as a weekly event. Alf and Alex MacKenzie have offered. John to liaise with Don to inform members in the next Puff ‘n Stuff. Don – distribution of Puff ‘n Stuff a great deal of time spent chasing members for articles, so will cease doing this. Members have five days after club night to submit articles to Don before Puff n Stuff publication. Members need to be encouraged for nominations for AGM in June. To be included in April and May Puff ‘n Stuff with nomination form. Sunday 22nd March – Moped rally. Otago Anniversary weekend. Starting in Clyde this year.

At the Dec 2019 CCB meeting he recalled the reason for the CCB to table the VCC CO’s lease renewal application, because the Cromwell Master Plan had had a Financial Report requested to demonstrate the financial requirements of it. Until the Financial Report is understood by the CCB the CCB is not in an informed position to make a decision on VCC CO’s lease application and therefore the VCC CO’s application remains on the CCB’s table. Editor’s Comments We had a very good turnout for the February Club Night with guest speaker Garth Hogan. Garth gave a terrific talk on his trips to the Bonneville Salt Flats and their attempts to break 200mph with a flathead V8. Most of us had no idea what was involved. It is definitely not a “just a tune it up and go” event. Great talk, Thanks Garth. The Sunday run was a great success, as mentioned in the Chairman’s report, with a fantastic turnout. There were a number of faces there that I didn’t recognize, which is great. We hope that those faces become familiar ones in future runs. I would like to thank Rob & Robyn McGregor for organizing the run and let them know that I have received several complimentary comments regarding the day. Well done. I wasn’t going to have a grizzle this month but habits are hard to break, so here goes. I receive several instances of requests to “put this in the next Puff’n Stuff”. My response is “Yes, email me the information”, but the details never arrive. If you don’t send me the information , I can’t put anything in the newsletter. COVCC 50th Anniversary All COVCC members. Please read this carefully, this is a discussion document and your input is essential. The suggestion for 50th Anniversary celebration is to link it in with the Blossom Festival weekend. We need to make a decision regarding the venue by or at the next Club night which is 11 March 2020. If you are not in agreement with the suggested meal, please contact one of the committee members and give them a good reason why you don’t like it and give an alternative. If you wish to include or exclude any of the bulleted suggestions, let us know. We want your input. No response or silence will be taken as acceptance. Noel White has checked out two venues for our evening meal and 50th celebrations His and my recommendation is The Orchard Garden Dunstan road which has room, off road parking, a nice setting, and a buffet meal is recommended at $55 per head. We have made a tentative booking at this time. Other possibilities are: • An afternoon tea/ coffee etc at the Orchard Garden or Post Office Café beforehand. •

Letter to the Editor Keeping the club going and fresh, editors past and present constantly wonder if their efforts bear any fruit (ripe and edible that is). We have strived to inform members of our many goings on and in some places, comings off, of our varied club activities. We are the people who have to look for the positive and diminish the negative, then get the message across, we encourage, we include interesting content, some funnies, what's new and what's mouldering away in the parts dept, what's coming up in the way of events and activities to keep you the member informed and active. We are the disseminators and collectors of all sorts of stuff, we have deadlines to keep to and each magazine takes a month to produce. Participation is what we are aiming for and many of you do, then there are those who don’t, names who mean nothing to any of us who are active, we get notifications that members simply disappear, who were they? Given that as we get older and our hard drives fill up, it does take a bit longer to relate names to faces, it’s easier for me to relate names to vehicles but hey that’s just who I am. It’s not snobbery or indifference it may be a little shyness, but in saying that many friendships have built over time, not only in our branch, but in other VCC branches around the country. We have difficulty in getting people to fill active roles in our club not much different from other clubs, but we appear to be quite unattractive to younger people or women for that matter. Is that because we emanate the attitude that the 1970’s or 80’s car ( god forbid that it’s Japanese) is only fit to lie in a hole in a very dark place? However, I have come to the conclusion that the unseen majority of members must not be allowed to dictate, by their silence and absence, the direction of the club (apart from the odd whinge that there is nothing for them or that they don’t know anyone). And, that we must concentrate on the active members and activities that work. And, our Sunday runs once a month, with quite a few impromptu lunch and coffee runs thrown in. A few of us also enjoy participating in other clubs events, National rallies, club captains tours and the like. As the now Club Secretary I field many enquiries as to membership, Vehicle Identification Certificates, low cost insurance, and other hard won information which is to the benefit of all club members. I point out that the forms and information is readily available on the VCC website, send out a copy of ‘Puff N Stuff’ for up to date information and that the prospective member should come along and find out for themselves what the club is all about. We are also one of the fastest growing clubs in the country as a lot of people are moving in from other areas, ghosts most of them. It seems that this is just too hard for seven out of ten. At our executive meeting it was decided that any new prospective member must, in the company of their proposer, attend a minimum of two official club activities before the application will be processed. We are moving into our 50th year; our annual Blossom Festival will be just that more special.. some of us are going to have another enjoyable time. Does that include you!? Graham

Sunday Run to Waipiata and Patearoa 16 February 2020 Central Otago Branch members Rob and Robyn Mc Gregor led our February run into the depths of the Maniototo . Leaving the Wakatipu , Upper Clutha, Cromwell and Alexandra areas to meet at the Muddy Creek CafÊ for morning coffee and briefing. The tour led to Naseby and Waipiata for lunch, then on to the Old TB sanitorium later borstal and then to Jane Falconers Clachanburn Heritage garden, to reflect that this was a day out for our ladies - of course we guys enjoyed it too. This was a full day trip and the mini clocked up 430 km. The success was measured by the fact that 17 cars attended with only one modern and one post vintage, a 39 Chevrolet. Nearly all the seats were taken up as members took friends along as well. There were also some new people along which always makes the day more interesting and again mostly British cars ( my challenge to the American guys to come up with an event!) Dunedin—Brighton Veteran Run John and I had a great day at the Dunedin to Brighton Rally on the 18th of January The day started out cloudy, no rain, this was a plus. Last year it had rained all morning until we got to Brighton, and then we had to hide from a cold wind. We met at the First Church Car Park at 8.45. 40 Veterans assembled with the earliest being a 1900 Wolseley through to 1917. Some of the names are interesting such as Saxon, A C Socialable, Darracq, Regal, Alldays & Onions, Moon and the Sizaire Naudin. Other more known makes were Renault, Cadallic, Studebaker, Dodge, Overland, T Ford, Buick, and Sunbeam. After a Rally briefing we then left there at 9.45 for a short journey to the Octagon for the Public Display. We departed the Octagon from 11am to Brighton. John was one of 4 motorcycles and he was riding his 1913 Royal Enfield. His competition was against a Triumph, Douglas and a Humber I had a seat in a 1913 Darracq that motored comfortably around the hill of Dunedin The cloud had cleared by the time we got to Brighton, it was very hot and we were seeking shade. We had a lovely boxed lunch. Field Test were held after lunch, throwing 5 rings onto a small cone, hitting a hockey ball through 6 hoops and the last was to keep your left wheel between the ropes. The first and last were very hard for a Motorcycle. We met at the Balmacewen Golf Club for the evening meal and prize giving. A presentation was given to Colin Pearce, a 60 year badge. A NEW START IN OAMARU– John Loudon Continued from last month ( Final instalment )
Our staff vehicle now for work and towing the elevators for delivery was a 1942 ex Army Chevrolet 1/2 ton pickup in very used condition. However, it did a good job until the gearbox gave up through lack of oil. This was a Chevy failing, as when the driveshaft seal leaked, gearbox oil ended up in the diff. This had a two-fold effect of not enough oil one end and too much at the other, which could leak onto rear brakes etc. I had a 4-speed gearbox spare, so it was fitted, now everyone had to learn to double-de-clutch, as it was a straight crash box. Most times you got it right, but if not you had to stop and start all over again, as some of the boys found out. The only incident we had with the Chev was one time on a back-country road out Ngapara area. This particular bit of road had quite a few sharp corners and by no means a high speed road. This was just as well as rounding one corner the drag link dropped off the pitman arm and the result was no steering. Fortunately, the Chev headed into the ditch and bank and not the other way, which had quite a steep drop into the gully. The boys involved, being quite resourceful, flogged some wire off the nearest fence and by twitching it all up tight, they drove back at a very much reduced speed and hoped for the best. Inspection later found the pitman arm ball very worn as were most of the others. A total overhaul of the whole front end produced a different vehicle to drive and a pleasure to go on longer trips with no longer wandering, as previously happened. Also fitted a later dash unit as the original had the hooded lights and small gauges, as all Army vehicles had in the early 1940's. The Chev, I believe, was replaced with a later model vehicle after my time there, so don't know what happened to it. It would have been an ideal one for vintage car club restoration. The section next to Irelands, which bordered onto to Orwell Street, as I mentioned earlier, was an old sawmill site. Right on the corner was old Maggie White's grocery type shop, which supplied the local industries and population with bread, milk, pies etc., and us boys with Greys tobacco, which was the only brand she stocked, but a change was coming. The shop was demolished, the whole area levelled, and Don Sloan Motors was erected, so the area had plenty of industry all in one place and was very busy most times. I was fulltime in the machine shop now and only occasionally had some time out in the main construction area, just to help out if short staffed and keep up welding skills, as found it took some time to do good neat welding, if away from it too long. (Was never that good anyway). Electric welders consisted of the large 3 phase with adjustable sliding choke, a Young single phase, also, with sliding choke and a Lincoln DC with upright motor generator and both adjustable amps and voltage control.
This was a nice welder to use once you got it adjusted to suit the job in hand and

also by switching the plus and minus leads over there was no problem with low hydrogen and hard facing rods for plough shares etc. Only problem it was very noisy and had a distinct scream. The Waitaki Electric Power Board had an Engineer called, Jim Belcher, who made up a single phase welder which ran off the ordinary household 3 pin plug as it had low running cost and was ideal to take away for a lot of outside jobs and it, also, had a plug to run either a drill or grinder, if necessary.
When we moved to Central Otago in the next instalment of different engineering, I had Jim make these welders on order for me and they are all around the area and still being used and, hopefully, not abused. Some, also, had built in 6-amp battery charger, as an extra, and most guys ordered this as well, as cost was minimal anyway and very handy. In 1968 we packed up the Coupe and had a holiday in Central Otago and did a tour of the area and liked the wide-open spaces and the uncluttered way of life of a larger town. Somehow I met up with Martin Meehan, a local contractor, building bridges and other work. He had set up a workshop to service his own gear. This was run by Ron Bradley, an Engineer on the last dredge, until it stopped in the early 1960's. The workload was getting out of hand for one bloke and I was offered a job, at a very good rate of pay, and could start any time. By this time, we had 2 young girls and with one about to start school, the decision was made to shift and make a new start for both of us, and the girls. This was quite a wrench to leave DA Ireland Ltd after 10 years and see it grow to its present size. Final farewells and an evening for us put on by Doug and Jocelyn. It was a major job of packing up everything and deciding what to leave behind in the store shed until later, when required. Alf Graham supplied the main large van and by this time I had a 1962 EK Holden Wagon (the Golden Holden, as the girls called it) and with the trailer well overloaded as I had a NZeta scooter for everyday transport on board as well, plus 2 McKay space heaters and flue supplied from parts when Dad was at GT Gillies at one time, we were on our way. Mate, Graham, drove the Coupe with 'Mac the Cat' and we all arrived to settle in Muttontown Gully for a time and our new life in Central Otago and a different type of engineering began. As a footnote to this story, during this time the team involved was Allan Findlay, Doug's first apprentice, and later Allan and a partner brought DA Ireland Ltd. Next came Nic Willemse, a tradesman welder etc. About this time Jim Boaden arrived to serve his time as Allan was now finished his sentence and now a tradesman. Following on, as time went by, we had Jim Carlson, Ron Baird, Nic Young, Dave Koppert, then another tradesman engineer, Russell Kernahan, who could turn his hand to anything, and Andy Wilkie. On and off there was the odd guy employed to help out at times, so if anyone reads this story and I have missed you out, just add yourself to the list!!

Wallaby Rally John and I attended the Waimate VCC Wallaby Rally, 8 February 2020. We set off on a beautiful sunny Friday and travelled to Timaru for the night. Saturday started out very cloudy, and once out of Timaru it started to rain, so looked for an overhanging tree and put up the hood. We got to Waimate, picked up our rally pack, We had a field test to complete while we had our cuppa, had 15 seconds to look at the objects then write them down. Once the briefing at 10 was held the first car headed off, we left at 10.24. Great rally over roads we hadn’t been on, quite a bit of shingle, but as it was wet there was no dust. We had lunch at the Hook Memorial Hall and were pleased that the rain had stopped and the sun was out. After lunch we headed back to Waimate to the club rooms for afternoon tea and prize giving. It was a great day and the bonus was that John came 2nd in the vintage section, 2nd overall and received the furthest travelled. Wendy was 1st lady Navigator. We headed home on Sunday peeling off clothing as we got closer to a very hot Central Otago Just over the bridge into Cromwell we got a flat tyre to just make the trip a little more interesting. 2020 South Island Club Captains Tour I usually say I have some of my favourite roads to share with you and this tour is no different. I was pondering the other day about what makes a favourite road and I’m thinking it is pretty much any road that you have a good experience on. That also however depends on your state of mind at the time. There are a couple of roads that I have travelled as a case of necessity where fuel is few and far between and these roads have not become favorites! For obvious reasons. I have travelled the road from Wanaka to Christchurch and back approximately 450 times over the last 37 years and while I don’t hate this road, I am not unhappy to not have to do it so often now. On the mornings where you are relaxed and just enjoying the ride, I find these are the times I most enjoy, so the road I find myself on becomes a favourite road. For my job in Rangiora I find myself on some new rural roads and some days I have to pinch myself to make sure it is real - I love driving and to do it in an older vehicle with like minded people is just heaven. Both Tracy & I hope you enjoy your time with us and if this is your first time, you will find I enjoy gravel even more then tar seal. This year we are heading south through the Molesworth - I’m hoping it will look completely different going in the other direction. I am particularly excited to show you Mangles Valley. We stumbled on it quite by chance and it shot to immediate stardom. As you can imagine, it has a gravel component! Some roads we have travelled before in part but this enables us to link in with other neat places. The day from Richmond to Blenheim is a short drive as it will allow some maintenance on vehicles and some maintenance on persons and their cladding. The accommodation list will enable you to make your motel bookings early and the entry form will follow soon as there are still a couple of meal prices to nail down. Tracy and I are looking forward to meeting you all again and possibly some new recruits. So welcome along and enjoy the ride. The Parts Department is the place to go if you are looking for that electrical and related bits; points, condensers, spark plugs, distributor caps including some magneto caps, and that is only part of two shelves. A lot of this is NOS . There are quite a few bits for Triumph 2000 s and Hillman hunters including instruments Carburettors manifolds, steering racks, also quite a lot of BMC stuff. There are filters, fan belts, gaskets, motors, gearboxes, new speedo conversion drives ie mph to KPH make your car 20% faster!
