In the Driving Seat The beginning of Spring marks to start of rallying season and time to dust off our vehicles in preparation for a busy few months ahead. The end of August was busy for the branch with the National Day and Daffodil Day. This was our first attempt at organising an event as part of the National Day and although we clashed with the Special Rigs, we had good support especially from the public. The Autospectacular was held on the 8th September and from reading the paper was extremely successful with approx 4000 attending. The new branch banners were on display so it wasn’t hard to find our display. Thank you to everyone who helped out - from making your vehicles available for display, setting up and manning the site during the day. The following weekend was the night rally hosted each year by the Vauxhall Club and open to all clubs. This year we had 18 teams from approx 5 clubs. The route was set on both sides of the harbour and, given the balmy weather that weekend, there were great views from both Highcliff Road and top of Mt Cargill. The winners were Bob and Cheryl Holmes from the Land Rover Owners club followed very closely by Matthew McLeary and Laura Arras in their 1976 Triumph. The Triumph was all dressed up for a holiday with picnic baskets in the back seat and cases on the roof rack. Coming up at the start of November is the Annual Taieri Tour which will also include the 50 year badge presentation to Ray Craig and 60 year presentation to Graeme Duthie. The entry forms are now available so please get these back in to Keith or Marion as soon as possible so we can confirm numbers for catering. January 2019 will be the 65th Dunedin to Brighton Veteran Rally which is major milestone for both the branch and our Veteran vehicles especially as all vehicles entered will be at least 100 years old. Planning is well in hand and I know Colin is already fielding expressions of interest from club members planning on attending. Keep an eye out for details in both the Road Runner and Beaded Wheels and please let Colin know if you are available to help out on the day and/or attend the anniversary dinner. Nicola. 7
Annual Membership Subscription Payments Please ensure that when you pay your Subscription ON LINE that you use your membership Number and Surname in the Code Reference options. There have been a number of people who have paid on line, who have not identified themselves sufficiently. This is creating a lot of work for National Office. Reminder that your subscriptions are due by the end of September. Branch Rallies – We are still looking for others to help with these. Please let your new Club Captain know if you are able to help. This is a good way to get to know your branch members and have a bit of fun! at the same time Sparkaholics – Until we get someone who is able to coordinate the activities of this group, it will remain in recess. Entertainment Book - $60.00 - $11 is donated to the VCC - Contact Branch Secretary if you would like one. DO YOU KNOW WHERE TO FIND YOUR NEAREST AED DEFIBRILATOR? The nearest defibrillator to the clubrooms is on the outside wall of the 4 Square shop on corner of Bayview Road. Please make a point of familiarising yourself of its location – Never know when it might be needed. SOLD OR SELLING YOUR VIC’D VCC VEHICLE ENSURE YOU SEND VIC CARD ALONG WITH CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP DETAILS TO NATIONAL OFFICE – Remember this paperwork is the property of the National Club – this is their way of keeping records of Vehicle ownership etc. MIDWEEK RUNS Last Thursday of the Month unless otherwise advised. Meet at clubrooms by 1pm for a drive and afternoon tea stop. If the weather looks promising on the day bring your afternoon tea, as we might find a spot where we can have a picnic afternoon tea! Vero Insurance Scheme - Just a reminder, the VCC Vero insurance scheme is set up for those with current VCC membership. It may be a good idea to remind the unfinancial people that you are ringing, that if they have insurance cover under the VCC Scheme with Vero, current membership is a requirement.

Targa Rally – our branch has been asked if we would supply some marshalls at Forsyth Barr on both the Wednesday and Thursday pm time to be advised– bring along your VCC eligible vehicle to include in the Public Display. Thanks to our team of members who ensured that this years Restoration Vehicles and a collection of Mopeds were provided for this year’s display at the Autospectacular. If you haven’t already noticed our branch is now sporting a pair of new Flags. These are a lot easier to transport and erect, compared to the banner which we have used in the past. These look really good with the Otago colours (blue and gold) and the VCC Wings.

Sunbeam wording from the 1925 Buyers Guide Sunbeams are popular in every country under the sun. This is not surprising seeing they possess many special features. The Sunbeam patent enclosed “oil bath” chain drive – a feature found on no other machine. The chains are always correctly and automatically lubricated. The Sunbeam all black finish is really weatherproof. It consists of several coats of pure black enamel and stoved separately over elastic undercoating. The Sunbeam engine is particularly noted for its great output and wide power range. It pulls splendidly on low revs and answers to every little movement of the throttle. The magneto is located high up on the machine and well out of reach of water or mud. It is tucked away behind the cylinder where it gets the best protection from the weather.
All Sunbeams are fitted with a mechanical oil pump which correctly maintains the flow of oil to the engine in proper proportions to the speed. Sunbeams are fitted with interchangeable wheels and have the divided rear axle. This exclusive feature is found on no other machine. By removal of a single bolt the wheel is removed without disturbing the rest of the brake, chain, or chain case. Sunbeams are the most expensive machines in their class. This may appear at first sight to be against them, but is actually a point in their favour. One cannot get something for nothing and one cannot expect to get a first class article at less than first class price. The colonial needs a machine which is robust, dependable, efficient, easy to handle, durable, economical, and which above all is independent of all weather and road conditions. No motorcycle so fully meets these requirements as the Sunbeam. p.s After all this, and more, what other motorcycle would one want?

SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES – Midweek Run - August
Thursday 30th August dawned blue sky’s not a cloud to be seen, perfect for the last Thursday of the month outing. Eight cars with seventeen people left the club rooms at 1.10pm destination – Henley. Drove over the old Red Bridge turned left down to end of the gravel road, pass a chap sitting patiently waiting for the whitebait. He must have wondered what was going on, all these classic cars going by. Once there out came six thermettes, set up by the river edge and lit to boil the water for a cuppa, followed by great clouds of smoke (lovely -dubbly). Ray Wilson’s was an old Railways one, massive big thing even had ‘N.Z Railways’ logo on it. Bryan McConachie’s one had a bit of trouble getting started. Once shown you only need a little kindling to start with by Marjorie Martin – Bryan was heating up. Cool breeze coming of the river, but all in all a great afternoon tea had by all. Hope to do more. TARGA RALLY 22ND – 27TH OCTOBER – UP DATE PLEASE TAKE NOTE – NOW WE ASKING FOR HELP!!!! Hi Everyone, This is a follow-up email to initial contact I’ve had with lower South Island VCC branches re the Targa-VCC time trial Monday 22nd to Saturday 27th October 2018. We’ve had a great response with 22 confirmed entries so far, including Austin (1), BMW (1), Ford (2), Jaguar (4), Kato (1), MG (4), Morgan (1), Porsche (3), Rolls Royce (1), Saab (1), Toyota (1), & Triumph (2). Vehicle age range is from a 1929 Rolls Royce Phantom 1 & a 1935 Ford V8 Coupe to a 1986 BMW 325iM, with a great selection of 1950’s, 60’s & 70’s in between! This inaugural time trial is proving to be a great opportunity to promote our respective VCC branches, fly the VCC flag & attract new members to join VCC. (Indeed, of the current entrants, 20 driver/co-drivers have joined VCC specifically for this event!) Events such as this couldn’t happen without the assistance of many volunteers and we very much appreciate the offer that lower South Island VCC branches have made to assist. I’m still awaiting the final itinerary to be confirmed by Targa NZ, but please refer Event Programme & Draft Outline for Lower South Island VCC Branch Assistance attached. (Please note that Event Programme times are indicative for Targa competition cars only – VCC time trial entrants will all start & finish earlier each day). For each of the days & activities outlined, we’d hope to have about 4-6 local VCC branch members assisting as marshals to direct parking for competitor cars at the nominated venues. In addition to VCC marshals cars, other local VCC cars could also be parked adjacent VCC competitor cars to enhance the public display, & hopefully attract new member interest to VCC. I appreciate that branches need time to organize “volunteers” for such activity and will email an updated itinerary as soon as it’s confirmed by Targa NZ. In addition to car display & marshal assistance at lunch/service stops & late afternoon/early evening parking venues, if any VCC branch members (or group), would be keen to get up close & personal with best views of the Targa event as timing crew etc, please contact me &/or Raewyn Anderson (Targa Event Administrator), tel 09 298 8322 or email info@targa.co.nz directly. National Daffodil Rally for Cancer
Our branch and some of our members managed to get really involved with the local branch of the Cancer Society for their week of Daffodil Day Fundraising. Sunday 26th saw approximately 50 cars and motorbikes arrive at the Victoria Road carpark, and then embark on a 1-2-hour tour around the Taieri Plains, then over the hill from Waihola to Taieri Mouth, with a pleasant trip back to Dunedin. The weather was balmy for this time of the year, some drivers stopped for ice creams, coffee or picnic on route before returning to the start point for a public display. We raised $677 for the Local Cancer Society. Besides the many members who volunteered Marshall duties we had 15 VCC members attend and the rest were members of the public or other one make clubs. Some of the makes represented were; Model T Fords, Mustangs, Triumph's, Mini's, Packard, Alvis, Jags, Riley, Vauxhall, Wolseley, to name just a few.
On Monday 27th, 10 members, some in their VCC eligible cars, assisted by volunteer runners (mainly University Students) delivered pre-sold daffodils to many individuals and businesses around the city. We were then called upon to assist with collecting the donation boxes from many of the business the following week. It was humbling to see the amazing support that our branch members provided for this charity.

Club History
It is getting time for me to ignore the sore bones after my meeting with the pole and get back into things. Here are some wants. In the next couple of months, I need information about things or incidents, or can help or lead into other facts or support other facts. Please no email, as I have not passed computer 101. Hard copy please as then I can file and build up an easy resource. What do I need? Pictures and Photos. Please place in envelopes with your name and contact details on it so I can return. Catalogue them as well with dates, events, names etc. I know photos do not take to have stuff written on the back of them but I think pencil would be the best option. Stories of interest. For example the Les Nye/Gordon Sharpe trip being the first car through the Haast with the Prime Ministerial motorcade. I have the original text from Gordon on that one. Stories such as that please and make sure you have verified the facts, as I may not have too much time to do so. Do not want to publish hearsay. Funny incidents. Again, as above verify the facts. Names of people you consider key people over the years and why. Write up on special one off events such as taking part in film or documentary productions, visits from famous people etc. I need someone to start going through all the newsletters for me to pick out some of the above. Some smattering of English would be good for this job. We may need to edit. A tentative closing date for all this would be Labour Weekend please.
