In the Driving Seat We had another good attendance at the October club night when Bill Grant stepped in at the last minute to give a talk on panel beating. It certainly goes to show that having a speaker is the way to go so if you have any suggestions for possible speakers for 2019 please let Keith know. November started with the annual Taieri Tour and thankfully the day was predominately fine - just a small shower of rain during the morning. This year we started the run from the Wingatui Hall which worked out well with plenty of parking and took pressure off our club rooms. Thank you to Keith, Bill, Bryan, Marion and Mark for organising the routes - there were quite a lot of favourable comments of a wonderful relaxing day. Thanks also to David Cunningham and his team for organising the field tests and Neil Gamble for allowing us access not only to his paddock for the tests and also arranging access to the Taieri Historical Park for lunch. Thanks also must go to Stuart and Lyn Neil who were on the registration desk and to Bill & Susan Partel for arranging the club-rooms for the prize-giving and dinner.
Special guests for the day were South Island Club Captain Alon Mayhew and his wife Tracey with Alon representing the National President in presenting the 50 year badge to Ray Craig and 60 year badge to Graeme Duthie. Congratulations to all prize winners and to Ray and Graeme on their badge presentations. Next years Jackson Rally will be slightly different in that we will be finishing the event at a Gala Day being organised by the Leslie Groves Hospital in Wakari. The organisers have planned an afternoon for the whole family and are encouraging club members and residents to bring along their children and grandchildren as there will be activities for the young. Afternoon tea will be provided by the hospital in recognition of our ongoing support and to celebrate the branch 65th anniversary. Coming up is the Christmas BBQ on the 9th December followed by the final club night for 2017 on the 21st which will include a shared (please bring a plate) supper. As this is the final Road Runner for 2018 Mark and I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year and we look forward to seeing you at the Jackson Rally and the Dunedin to Brighton Rally. Information sought on the Park Street Clubrooms
Recently – the new owners of the Park Street, Clubrooms contacted me. They are keen on getting some details of its past history. What work was done to it while it was in our ownership and if there are any photos of the inside. (I only have a couple of photos, but these do not provide very good detail). Please get in touch with me if you can provide us with any more information. Eg: Layout, special happenings, was the bar used upstairs, as well as down stairs etc. 8
ALL FORD DAY - Organiser wanted!!
The committee has been approached by one of our members regards organising the annual ALL FORD DAY- which usually happens the day after the USA Day here in Dunedin. This event has not happened recently due to lack of organisers. Our committee has responded in saying that we are not prepared to take this on, as we find it hard enough to get organisers to arrange our own calendared events. If anyone who is not on the committee and is a keen FORD owner who would like to take on this challenge please contact a committee member with your expression of interest. GUEST SPEAKER Thanks to Alistair Graham who arranged for Mr Grant to do a presentation on Panel Beating last month, it was very informative, especially with the video that was screened at the end of his talk. We have had a good selection of Guest speakers at our Club Nights. We thank various members of our committee for organise these people to come out on a Friday evening. It has been heartening to see a good number of members attending these nights. We are hoping to be to able to get the Police to come and give a talk on Home Security in March – this was cancelled last month – due to limited personnel being available to cover duties.
Dunedin Brighton Run
Colin Winter is organising this event again. He is always on the look-out for Marshalls, who are needed at various times during the event. This will be the 65th Run and he is hoping for 65 entries. The Prizegiving Dinner will be held at the Savoy on Saturday evening. Two Cruise ships are expected to be in port on this day as well. So, the City will be busy. Contact Colin Winter if you would like to help out in any way.
MOPEDS In CLUTHA Sunday 2 December Get those pedals oiled, tyres pumped, fuel mixed and be ready for Sunday 2nd of Dec ember down at South Otago for their Moped / Scooter Rally and Veterans. No entry forms just be at the Clubrooms at 10.00am for the normal morning cuppa. Ring around our local branch member mopeders and sort transport as I presume very few will ride down to Balclutha. Targa Rally 2018 - Report and acknowledgments A very special thank-you to all those members of lower South Island VCC branches who assisted with car displays & marshals for the recent Targa-VCC Time Trial. Starting with an outstanding display of Southland branch cars around the band rotunda in Queens Park, Invercargill on Labour Day Monday, we were very well supported by VCC branches from Gore, South Otago, Otago, North Otago & Central Otago with their own car displays & marshal assistance for both VCC & Targa car parking at lunch & evening service stops. Our Targa-VCC entrants very much appreciated meeting with your members & all their assistance. It was also great to see many of the public attend the lunch & evening service stops to view our VCC cars. The Otago Branch invites you to take part in the 65th Dunedin – Brighton Veteran Car Run. The Mayor will flag the vehicles away from the Octagon And we will then drive to Brighton for field tests and lunch. The event is open to all Veteran Vehicles built prior to 1st January 1919.

You are welcome at our clubrooms Friday Night for a Noggin and Natter and Supper. Entry packs will also be available from 7.30pm. The event will start from the First Church Carpark – Enter the Carpark off Lower Moray Place and follow Marshalls directions. THANKS Rally packs will be available at 8.45am. and the briefing will be at 9.15am sharp. The cars will then leave in order for the short journey to the Octagon and the Official Opening of the DCC Festival Programme. We need to be in the Octagon by 9.45am. Entrants will depart the Octagon from 11.00a.m. for Brighton, which includes the timed section. Field Tests will be held at Brighton Domain followed by lunch. Concours Judging will also take place at the Domain. The Concours is a separate competition and is not taken into account in the rally results. Dinner and Prizegiving will be at The Savoy (Moray Place) at 6.30pm. SUNDAY We will meet at the VCC Clubrooms at 10.00 am We intend to have a leisurely amble to Careys Bay for natter and lunch, at your own cost.

47th South Otago “Clutha Rally” The first Saturday in November each year is the Otago Branch’s Taieri Tour. The first Tuesday in November is the Melbourne Cup from Flemington in Victoria. On the second Saturday in the same month is the well-known and popular annual Clutha Rally run by the South Otago Branch of the VCC of New Zealand .The starting venue, as usual, was the Balclutha War Memorial Hall with a first vehicle kick off/start time of 10-30am. As I mentioned one year ago, Jenny Craig is unknown in South Otago as the entrants were treated to a scrumptious morning tea, then an albeit quick briefing from one of the organisers and the show was on the road. Unsure of the actual number of vehicles entered as were entrant number 57 and our starting time was listed as 11-30am. There were a few still behind us awaiting there start time. Once again the rally instructions were very simple to follow with almost scene like happenings re the Bell Tea TV advertisement from a decade or so ago. We apparently became geographically embarrassed re the Bridgeport Street instruction ?? Reading ahead we rejoined the rally route. The lunch venue was the Sinclair Wetlands where the previous Saturday this was an option to visit for those on the 2018 Taieri Tour .The majority of vehicles entered seemed to be from within the Post 60 class. After the lunch break we headed back to Mosgiel.

Editor’s note - other entrants had two options on their return to Balclutha. Either to take SH1 via Milton and an Armistice Day display in the Coronation Hall at Milton or a more scenic, gravel road back to Balclutha, for Prizegiving and dinner. Glen McConnachie's 1927 Model T Tudor He had two male navigators on Saturday. David Roff commented on how nice it was to be able to drive in a Model T with windows and 360 degree vision.
Ray Craig’s MG had a Tyre issue - good to see all the boys standing by giving advice! He was soon sorted and able to continue on the Rally. 15
For the G.C. Jackson Memorial Trophy This rally marks the beginning of motoring events in the Branch for the New Year. G.C. (Gerie) Jackson was a long-time member of the branch who lived on the Otago Peninsula and loved its sights, so close to but so different from the city. Not long before his death he raised the idea of this rally and outlined his concept of what it should be to the Branch Committee. When the Committee later decided to take up his idea his family donated the trophy, which bears his name.
The Mary B. Jackson Trophy For Best Motorcycle at the VCC Otago Jackson Peninsula Rally Donated by Bill Veitch and Ron Gilbert in memory of Mary Jackson MA (Hons) wife of Gerry Jackson who instigated the Peninsula Rally. Mary was a BSA and Norton rider at a time when few women rode motorcycles. Mary nee Kibblewhite had a distinguished academic career earning University scholarships and prizes. She later taught at Otago Girls High School and St Hilda’s Collegiate School. The trophy is a Norton kick-starter shaft. This year's rally will take place on Sunday 20th January 2019 If possible, the result of the afternoon competition will be announced during afternoon tea, at Leslie Groves, before everyone returns home, failing that the result will be posted in the Clubrooms on the following Friday. The overall winner will be awarded the G.C. Jackson Memorial trophy The event is open to all classes of vehicle accepted by the V.C.C. of N.Z. All entrants must be financial members. 50 YEAR AWARD PRESENTATION Ray Craig: Joined 1/8/68
Ray joined the club in 1968 after bringing the bones of a 1919 Maxwell out of Hindon. The chassis had been used as a trailer to take wool to the rail. The hood bows, dash, instruments, steering box, and steering wheel were in a dry shed. The engine, gear box radiator, and starter generator had been given away by the farmer’s father years ago, but he knew to whom they had been given. In due time Ray recovered all of these. It now stands on new rims, tyres, and tubes. All mechanics have been stripped, repaired, cleaned and refitted ready to go, 50 years later. Over the years he has restored a 1936 Morris 8 saloon, a 1937 MG sports saloon (quite rare, only 3 in NZ) and then Marion’s father’s 1925 Chrysler Roadster. Thorough restoration of all parts had paid off as they have travelled 25,000 miles in the Morris 8, 46,000 miles in the MG so far and 25,000 in the Chrysler all with no major problems, bar a few punctures. Ray and Marion have had a lot of pleasure travelling to Slope Point in the south of Bluff to Cape Reinga, through the Passes of Molesworth, Nevis, Thompson, and Danseys (several times coming home from the Mt Cook rallies), the Dunstan Trail and many other hairy places. The selling of Park Street, and the negotiation of Forbury Road are very much still on Ray’s mind. After everyone had expressed their opinions and the three immediate neighbours being very happy that we should have it, as they did not want a Church group singing, or Gang headquarters to have it. The Treasurer had advised of an offer to sell it to a church group with a large profit to us. This was the last straw, so Ray moved that we buy the building. Gordon Jenks and Ray had worked in the building trades for years so they measured up and decided where the new partitions should go. Health inspector’s advised Ray what was needed for the kitchen. Ray drew a new plan of alterations, which were accepted. The late Laurie Woods helped Ray trailer all the timber and wall board for new partitions. The spirit of the Branch members was pretty high about the shift but a few who were bitter and twisted refused to help in any way at all.
At this time Ray was House Manager, and due to the shift, the branch had to apply for a new bar licence, and for a Bar Manager’s certificate for himself. The club had never had a legal Bar Manager, but we had had a liquor licence for many years. Murray George and Ray removed the large switchboard. Murray attended to the new metering after which Ray did the rest of the electrical needed. Ray always made himself available when any advice or work was required. 18

The club had never had a legal Bar Manager, but we had had a liquor licence for many years. Murray George and Ray removed the large switchboard. Murray attended to the new metering after which Ray did the rest of the electrical needed. Ray always made himself available when any advice or work was required. Ray and Marion are keen rallyist’s and all for the competition. They were good teachers when it came to plotting routes. Marion often with knitting in her hand. One Taieri Tour – Speed Radar was used for the Time Trial. He could not understand how they had won this section when there were no marshalls in sight recording details. He had missed that plain Traffic vehicle which had recorded his speed nominated speed. – Have never seen him so bemused.
