These messages include reminders about events etc Jerry Wing From the Committee The Targa Rally is in Oamaru on Thursday October 25th for their lunch stop they will be at the Historic Precinct for the lunch / Service stop and we have been asked to provide Marshalls and cars for Display. If you are willing to help, please contact Jerry Wing on the club email or phone 0274358983 The Windsor Rally is on the 1st of December entry forms will be available shortly help is needed for Marshalling at the start and the lunch stop and for the field tests contact either Kathleen Perry or Rebecca George if you can assist. Lynn Newell needs help for the Swap meet on 17th November and if you can she will be at the club rooms at 6.45pm 3rd of October before the main meeting. There is a Motorbike Show on the 29th and 30th of September at the Oamaru Club that will be worth supporting. IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ Membership renewal. Many are now paying their membership by direct bank transfer. This is a good idea BUT you must put your membership number as a reference so the person reading the statement knows whose membership is being paid. Otherwise it is just like popping a cheque for your membership in a plain envelope with no other identification. (Editor) HI Everyone 16 pages of Direct Credits today, and 14 individual payments have not put the correct reference. I have managed to identify (with some difficulty – spending just over 1 ½ hours on them), but there is still one which I cannot identify. The name on the deposit is MA & KP & TL BURN. I do not have any surname BURN with those initials (in fact there are only two with the surname BURN and it isn’t them and besides, they have already paid and the initials are different). So who is this? Can you please put a notice in your magazine, otherwise they will get a reminder in November and no doubt jump up and down at me, for not being able to work out who they possibly could be!!
Can you also put a notice in your magazines just expressing the importance of putting the reference, as stipulated on the annual invoice, when doing a Direct Credit in to our account. It is extremely time consuming trying to work out who a payment may belong to.
October Mid-Month Run The October mid-month run will be on the 24th of October meet at the club rooms at 1.15pm It is going to a historic Homestead, there is an entry cost of $10 covering entry and afternoon tea

Adventures of an old restorer I recently had a week off from working on my Morris, the reason being, my angle grinder. Like some of my other tools seems to have a will of its own and for no reason it decided to have a go at my left hand whilst I was wire brushing the inside of the front wing They say you should not wear your wedding ring in a workshop but looking at the mess it made of the ring the Doc commented that if I had not been wearing it I might have lost my finger!!! The metal formers are now in place. The new ones are made from thicker steel to get the same strength as the old ones. I have found that the 1937 steel in the Morris seems to be stronger and harder to drill. Or is it my old age?! A fellow Morris 8 owner kindly sent me pictures of the wood framing and how it was put together, especially the shape of the pieces under the doors. These are specially shaped to match the contour of the door and also connect the rear framing to the firewall. For some reason the only area that was rotten was everything between the firewall and the rear hinge posts, including both metal formers. These were practically rusted away, just enough left to use as patterns for the new ones. All the wood surrounding them, the wood around the rear seats and in the firewall was still sound. After the body was removed, the chassis was completely cleaned and no faults were found. Another Morris 8 fan very kindly sent me pictures and drawings of the wood framing and how it was put together but I am only replacing the rotten wood and not the whole frame. The steel sheeting around the firewall and rear end has not been removed. So how do you fit the wood to each end? Solution, Marine ply wood laminated. It took quite a few layers of Marine ply glued to each other and put into a jig in order to bend it in two plains. The horizontal curve of the door and the vertical curve of the body.
Next morning I gingerly removed it from the jig, it stayed the way it was bent and I was surprised as to its strength. At the Firewall end and at the rear door post end I had glued and screwed laminated Marine ply to the inside. A larger area of contact was achieved than normal. The new laminated piece was then screwed and glued in place and also screwed to the metal former at even intervals. Looking through Google I found a very good website Bob Bryan's Morris 8. Drawing for the floor plan and for the seat mounting blocks. it would be worth looking at. Thank you, All the best, Clive.
The TS restoration Back in February 2009 the process began: my wife’s “bitsa Douglas: had been sold and I was left with some spares which I had intended to sell on: namely a rusty frame and tank, fork blades, motor, gearbox and rear wheel. However, a teaching colleague and friend, Dave Clark, who has an original 1924 TS Douglas, offered a front wheel and to rebuild the motor I had. Little did either of us know that he would end up restoring the entire bike. Over the next eight years, I constantly searched, E- bay, Trade me, went to as many swap meets as I could manage, slowly gathering up the bits that were missing, which was much more of a monumental task than I ever imagined. It seemed that about a dozen people in New Zealand were looking for Douglas parts at the same time I was. Contacts were made with Ben in the Taranaki, and John in Australia, and parts were swapped or sold in very generous terms. Alan Brehaut in Timaru supplied a better tank, a tail light and some footrests. Alan is an amazing wealth of knowledge in terms of Douglas motorbikes, his father was the agent for them in Timaru. I swapped some later wheels for a genuine front hub stamped with Douglas to a most generous chap (Ian) in Australia. Also in Australia Adam Higgins made the mudguards, and I highly recommend his high standard of workmanship, a brilliant job. The club parts provided a few bits and pieces and my thanks to Dick for putting up with all my requests. Much was not available, such as seat and brake springs which were made by Brian at Metal Springs in Dunedin and the main spring by a firm in Christchurch. Ross Hayes in a local engineering firm, did heaps of awkward stuff like rebuilding all the fork shackles and tops to match the lovely Douglas threads!!! But I am so amazed at the talent of Dave Clark, who made so much himself: we had no seat pan, so he forged one in his blacksmith’s forge; he made the clamps on the footbrake shaft, the correct screws for the gear change, the gear change knob, the correct style bolts to hold the mudguards together, brake rods, rear brake arm, footboard clamps, footbrake, cable ends, straighten the belt wheel, rebuild the carb, motor, Woodruff key, repair the handlebar controls, the silencer, missing special bolts such as the rear stand, re-thread almost all threads, mostly as original and much more straightening, bending and shaping than I have room to list here.
The bike would not exist without his engineering skill, patience and advice, and the 300 plus hours he put in. Plating was done in Geraldine, the local saddler made the seat saddle and the toolbags. Another friend of Dave’s, Bruce Williams painted all the shiny back bits and the result is brilliant. I think all it needs now is a belt guard and a bulb horn. The bike has been test ridden, and taken to a couple of displays. Now all that remains is getting it legally on the road and persuading the local Transport department that it doesn’t need indicators amongst a few other things!!!

VINTAGE CAR RUN - 19th Sept. It was a beautiful day for the run from the clubrooms to Kurow via various roads and lovely spring scenery on the way. Twenty one people and ten cars took part (plus three dogs). Some visitors were welcomed and I’m sure they would have enjoyed their day out. The Devil’s Bridge wetland is deserving of its reputation, and it was great to see so much planting which had been done and thriving. Also a good number of ducks and possibly other water birds afloat. The fresh new leaves on the willow trees were a sure sign that spring is well and truly here, as well as the long strings of daffodils on the roadside at Awamoko. It was good to see young calves and lambs enjoying the warm sunshine along with us. A dusting of snow on the ranges above Kurow was a reminder that the odd frost might be still in the air, but lovely to look at. We enjoyed our picnic at the Kurow Island, between the two new bridges - a huge improvement on the old rickety one-way ones. The river looked a bit too swift for a swim could have been a quick trip back down country! Thank you Verna for once again arranging such an enjoyable and interesting run.
Hi Everyone, This is a follow-up email to initial contact I’ve had with lower South Island VCC branches re the Targa-VCC time trial Monday 22nd to Saturday 27th October 2018. We’ve had a great response with 22 confirmed entries so far, including Austin (1), BMW (1), Ford (2), Jaguar (4), Kato (1), MG (4), Morgan (1), Porsche (3), Rolls Royce (1), Saab (1), Toyota (1), & Triumph (2). Vehicle age range is from a 1929 Rolls Royce Phantom 1 & a 1935 Ford V8 Coupe to a 1986 BMW 325iM, with a great selection of 1950’s, 60’s & 70’s in between! This inaugural time trial is proving to be a great opportunity to promote our respective VCC branches, fly the VCC flag & attract new members to join VCC. (Indeed of the current entrants, 20 driver/co-drivers have joined VCC specifically for this event!) Events such as this couldn’t happen without the assistance of many volunteers & we very much appreciate the offer that lower South Island VCC branches have made to assist. I’m still awaiting the final itinerary to be confirmed by Targa NZ, but please refer Event Programme & Draft Outline for Lower South Island VCC Branch Assistance attached. (Please note that Event Programme times are indicative for Targa competition cars only – VCC time trial entrants will all start & finish earlier each day). For each of the days & activities outlined, we’d hope to have about 4-6 local VCC branch members assisting as marshals to direct parking for competitor cars at the nominated venues. In addition to VCC marshals cars, other local VCC cars could also be parked adjacent VCC competitor cars to enhance the public display, & hopefully attract new member interest to VCC. I appreciate that branches need time to organize “volunteers” for such activity & will email an updated itinerary as soon as it’s confirmed by Targa NZ. Please advise your preferred branch contact person for me to liaise with re car display/marshals etc. In addition to car display & marshal assistance at lunch/service stops & late afternoon/early evening parking venues, if any VCC branch members (or group), would be keen to get up close & personal with best views of the Targa event as timing crew etc, please ask them to contact me &/or Raewyn Anderson (Targa Event Administrator), tel 09 298 8322 or email info@targa.co.nz directly. Hi - was recommended by a fellow enthusiast to ask on here of my dilemma, being a lover of old cars with owning currently a 68 mustang, 67 Mk1Mini and now a 57 A35 Austin van which is in a full restore at 85%. One of my trafficators I think, has an internal melt down (just big sparks when connected). Can anyone aid me by having a working spare in their box of bits. The model in question is a SF80 . I am
a member of the VCC Far North Branch I have just purchased a 1935 Rover 14 sports saloon. This is an uncompleted project I’m looking for info on rather than parts. I have been talking to John Comber as I heard he had one but it is a ‘37 the next model and a 12 not 14. John tells me he has come across a Black 14 of my model at one of your events. Is it possible this car belongs to one of your members that you could put me in touch with? We have found an article on line naming a Walton Brown as having one in your region if this helps.
