Adventures of an "Old Restorer" When I retired I had to have something to do to keep me from ending up in the 'funny farm', I enjoy tinkering with old cars so what better to keep my mind occupied in retirement, I used to own a Morris 8 Tourer in 1963, so when I saw this one advertised on Trade Me as a project, I just had to have it, I think memories of miss spent youth was something to do with it. The car used to belong to Kevin Radford of Brighton, who bought it new in 1937, he passed it on to his son Shayne Radford, it was last registered in 1971 and was stored in a shed until now. The car featured in the Morris 8 Club magazine in Sept 2005 as a barn find, the last line of that article was a plea for someone to restore it. Now 13 years later it is being restored. We transported it back from Christchurch with no mishaps, and unloaded it into the workshop, the next day I gave it a close inspection, all the main parts were there, but OMG she was in a bit of a state, the ravages of time had really taken their toll, so there was nothing for it but to strip her down to the bare chassis and start from scratch. All the bolts had become rusted in place so out with the angle grinder, every step was photographed and notes taken mainly so I would know how it went back together So far I have cleaned her up and overhauled the front brakes and steering, had to hone out the slave cylinders and the master cylinder, and I am making up new brake pipes. Bearings checked out OK. Also had to grind off all the bolts holding the side runners to the chassis, managed to drill and tap the captive nuts to fit a slightly larger new bolt. I have made up new side runners as the old ones were shot. The spoke wheels have been sand blasted and sprayed with gloss aluminium. There is a lot more to do yet but seeing the chassis all cleaned off and painted is
good as it shows me that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I will be converting her to 12 volt, it seems logical as the whole car will have to be rewired and all new electrics will be installed. Thank you for your time, I look forward to feed back, fore and against!! All the best, Clive.
