Chairman’s Report t’s been a bit hectic lately with the clubs usual business plus the Model A Club as our guests. What a great weekend they had, well run by Bob, Chris, Dale and her team looking after them and filling their bellies. Well done team. It has just added to the already clubs reputation. By the time you read this we would have been on our boat trip to D’urville Island. Again Bob has put a lot of time and many phone calls to dodge the weather and make it happen. So after our rally you can all have a well deserved rest. Next club activity will be end of the months noggin and natter, see coming events. Chris is making a list of members joining dates etc so “we “have records of just who is to receive 25,35,50 and 60 year badges. We may just need some help from members who joined prior 1992 (head office has records after this date) Nice to see Michael Lavender present Ray Fairweather with his 60yr certificate. Club Captain’s Report September was very busy with Fathers Day and the International Model A Day. The kitchen was kept busy for that weekend, as well as our usual Natter & Noggin. The off and on again trip to Durville finally made it, with all reports of a great trip. Then our Biennial 60th Rally drew a good crowd from here and beyond with fine weather.

VCC National Day - Daffodil Rally for Cancer Perfect weather, generosity and a good cause contributed to the success of our second annual Daffodil Rally for Cancer raising a record $60,000.00! We had great feedback and attendance for the 2017 event and raised $40,000.00 for the Cancer Society. I am delighted that this year we increased the amount raised by 50%, and I am very proud of our Club and our members who were involved. There were over 3000 vehicles either on the road or on display on the day. Twenty-six branches of the VCC were involved this year and all the money raised will stay in their area and be given directly to the local Cancer Society. Many Branches have commented that the response from the general public has been overwhelming, both in attendance and in their generosity. One of the lovely outcomes of this event is the interest generated in the Vintage Car Club, which has resulted in new members. I would like to congratulate and thank those Branches involved in the day for their enthusiasm and effort which has not only benefitted the Cancer Society, but also our Club with the public profile it creates. This day is a wonderful achievement for Branches and members who can be very proud of what they have accomplished. Our National Day has become a special event for the Club, and it can only get bigger and better from here! Secretary’s Scribblings...… Another month goes by, and another month till Christmas and the end of the year! Where does the time go? From the Committees monthly meeting: The defibrillator has arrived and is in the Club rooms. This will have a permanent home in the glass cabinet along with a first aid kit which will be available when ever we need them. The decision has been made to take these on any club run, in case someone needs a jump start while out enjoying what we do. We have received an entry form for the Blenheim Christmas parade on Saturday 1st December at 3.30pm. Bob O’Malley has offered his Ford AA truck as the Clubs entry in the parade. This will need to be decorated in Christmas theme which I am sure with the talent we have in the Club will be done well. There is some concern with the Brayshaw Heritage Park Association of rumour that change is needed around the Park to seemingly make the park more commercial. Apparently, some want the Park fenced and entry is by payment. The VCC do not subscribe to these thoughts at all, and we have received submissions from a number of users which the Committee will be studying prior to our next meeting and making our views plain to the Association. Dale and her helpers in the Kitchen have been doing a stirling job again, firstly with catering for the Model A Rally meals a couple of weeks ago. There were many complementary comments from participants about the food, which was outstanding, and the venue in the museum was very much appreciated with the atmosphere and memorabilia in the room. There are a number of functions over the next month which the kitchen will be used for, so if anyone would like to volunteer to help, please contact Dale. The BBQ trailer has found a new home in the refurbished shed and by all accounts has settled in well! The Biennial Rally will have been held by the time you read this. There are about 55 cars entered and the Museum will be used once again for catering purposes over the weekend. Those who have not entered will have missed out on a great event, along with a special 60 th Anniversary Plaque commissioned to be given to all contestants. Since our meeting, the postponed trip to Durville Island was held on Thursday with 59 passengers on the Pelorus Mail Boat out to Catherine Cove where we had a great lunch put on by the hosts at the Durville Wilderness Lodge. Thanks to Bob for many phone calls made to reorganise this event as the weather did not play ball when the trip was supposed to go last weekend. I am in the process of going through the clubs list of members to work out who 6
and when members are eligible of 60year, 50-year, 35 year and 25 year badges. This is quite a daunting task, as prior to about 1992, records were lost, and with transfers into the Branch we do not have all the information needed. If you think you are due any of these badges, please let me or Kelly know so we can do the research to make sure this happens.

Update from Your Social Convenor Only 11 weeks to Christmas WHOOPs !!!! Sorry to remind you all, gosh the months have gone fast this year. The kitchen has had a couple of busy weekends on the 21st and 22nd the Model A's had a rally here, on the Friday night we put on nibbles and the Saturday night a dinner. Very successful and I would like to thank the waitress's and waiters for all their help, it was a busy weekend and I hope you all had a good rest on the Sunday. THANK YOU Natter & Noggin night of Bangers and mash was again an enjoyable night. We have a few functions coming up, starting with our rally on the 5th & 6th with the weather looking good and a good number of cars. We have an afternoon tea for the Blind on the 16th. Our Natter & Noggin for October is a Pot Luck on the 26th October. November 30th Is the last Natter &Noggin for the year it is a Xmas Theme so save this date. (Have written to Santa, waiting for a reply)

From the Blokes in the Shed‌ A better than average month this time finance wise, which is pleasing. The blokes continue with their good work sorting through the engines, gearboxes and all manner of boxes of bits. Getting the shelves so everything can be seen and in some semblance of order in the Trevor May Shed. Thanks to David Stuart of Nelson Branch, who has donated his bearings and seals reference manuals from his youth as a parts salesman. These will be a boon I'm sure, for Gary Vercoe in his bearing sorting mission. Our structural team are progressing on with the container conversion, things are looking good. The 1928 Chev 4 kitset we advertised has gone to a local buyer and it looks like we'll have a new member as a result of the deal. We can't get better than that. Our branch catered for the Model A car club's rally recently, with very positive comments on our hospitality. Speaking from the spare parts aspect, a happy Sunday morning was had by all. We advertise an after hours service and this has been taken up on occasions by members and the general public, both local and passing through and has proved to be a worthwhile exercise. In the course of receiving donated goods and other goodies, a sizeable pile of non motoring related gear accumulates, I then organize a site at the Railway Market and with the help of John Larcombe, Tris and others where have a fun time disposing of the above stuff to the public, for a worthwhile result. Profile - Commander David Bool VRD* RNZVR (Rtd)
I was born in Christchurch in 1940 and lived there for 66 years until retirement in Blenheim in 2006. I had an unremarkable childhood, but I remember the great snowfall of 1945 and the meeting of Dad’s brother - home from the war in 1946. My early interest were of boats, boating and associated stories. I had devoured Nicholas Monserrat's “The Cruel Sea” by the time I was eleven and found it quite educational. My teacher in years 7-8 was a returned Naval man who whetted my interest in things nautical. So it was that I joined the Sea Cadets Corps in Christchurch. Here I learned things navy, there were boats for sailing and the Naval Reserve had a 72ft Motor Launch which we were able to man regularly. In 1958 when the Labour Govt stopped CMT and introduced the Voluntary Defence Forces Act, I transferred to the Naval Reserve. I had already been to sea on several trips including HMNZS Kiwi, HMS Concord and HMS Cardigan Bay. The Royal Navy had a substantial fleet based in Hong Kong in the 1950’s and on the completion of exercises their ships would tour New Zealand ports with much of the crew on leave and with space for cadets. 10
The same year I commenced a four year pharmacy apprenticeship. I managed to fit in a regular night navy parade, three nights night school and late night work plus sailing or at sea in the Naval ML at the weekend. Just as well I was fully occupied as on apprentice wages of three pounds a week, half of which was board, there was not much spare for entertainment. During the first two years of my apprenticeship I managed to pass pharmacy exams and qualify as an Asdic (Sonar) operator on board HMS Carysfort operating in the Hauraki Gulf in a force 8 gale. I well remember on one of our attack run on a submarine, we were told there had been a noise complaint from HMS Anchorite. The hand grenade dropped to measure accuracy of the run had dropped into the conning tower. I bet that rattled their can! On completion of Pharmacy Final exams, the navy offered an overseas deployment in the cruiser HMNZS Royalist. The programme included Independence celebrations for Samoa, work up with the US fleet in Pearl Harbour, then on to Canada, the West Coast Ports of the US and home via Pearl Harbour and Fiji. I received a commission as Sub Lieutenant in 1964. An opportunity arose to spent a week on the submarine HMS Tabard. This was of interest because of my previous employment on Sonar. We spent a full day submerged in Cook Strait, simulating a mine laying field across the entrance to Wellington Harbour and stalking and simulating torpedo attacks on both ferries. There was a full southerly gale blowing and even submerged at 50 feet the movement was significant. Later when snorkling towards Cape Campbell, with waves at 5 metres and the snorkel only 2-3 metres above the surface, the diesel engine's sucked air out of the boat and the snorkel shut down when submerged beneath the swells making conditions on board very unpleasant. Arriving off Lyttelton next day, the snow on the Port Hills was down to sea level. 11
By 1978 I was appointed Executive Officer at HMNZS Pegasus, and was also appointed to ADC to the Governor General Sir David Beattie. This involved attending investitures, meeting Sir David (usually with a G&T in the Penthouse Suite at Noads Hotel) and attending to any requirements when he was in Christchurch. By the 1980’s the ML’s were getting tired and the reserves were to get new boats. This entailed new watch keeping certificates and examinations. To this end, I joined the hydrography boats work out of Bluff and further patrols with the fishery protection patrol craft to gain the requisite qualifications. In 1983 I was appointed Commanding Officer of the Reserve Division in Christchurch with a complement of 120. During annual exercise's usually held in the Marlborough Sounds and Tasman area I became the senior officer and found myself in charge of up to six patrol craft. After forty years I decided to hang up my naval hat. During this whole period the pharmacy ran smoothly with a succession of manager's and competent staff, but the drug scene became more difficult with a series of break-ins and holdups which tended to stress everyone. In 2006 I sold up to a pharmacist from Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) who said he was more used to having the police with machine guns at this door! I wished him well and moved to Blenheim. Two elderly couples were enjoying friendly conversation when one of the men asked the other “Earl, how was the memory clinic you went to last month?” “Outstanding” Earl replied. “they taught all the latest psychological techniques—visualisation, association—its made a big difference for me.” “ That’s great! What was the name of the Clinic?” Earl went blank. He thought and thought but couldn’t remember. Then a smile broke across his face, and asked, “what do you call that flower with a long stem and thorns?” “You mean a rose?” “Yes that’s it!” he turned to his wife. “Rose, what was the name of that clinic?” Submitted by Chris Bird. 15

Motorcycle Notes Septembers run always coincides with the Horoata swap meet which has always been heavily motorcycle influenced making it attractive to us of the two wheeled variety. Most head down on the Friday, stay overnight, do the swap meet, bolt home that day and attend Sunday’s run. Means of accommodation vary with some in motels while others camped overnight on site which is where the good buggers award goes this week. Parked in amongst the 3 or 4 large campers with their oscillating sky dishes, self -levelling chassis and heat pumps was one tired work van with a mattress and two members about to get out there camping stove to cook their bake beans for their evening meal, when Barry and Viv appeared from one of the campers and proceeded to feed and water the duo in luxurious surroundings and good company which was much appreciated. A few bargains were found and brought back and contacts made. Colin was heard muttering there didn’t seem to be much Honda parts around and I didn’t have the heart to tell him Ryan was 50 something years younger, has longer legs, been on the go since 7 o’clock and seemed to be hoovering up anything remotely Honda that may or may not fit his bikes which probably had some bearing on the lack of parts in sight and the sinking rear end of my vehicle. Sunday’s run was well attended and the weather held out for us, just, with only a smattering of rain at lunch time. Unfortunately, the backup had to be used with George having an electrical fault putting a stop to his bike hopefully it will be a quick fix, if not he is very close to finishing off his Honda restoration and after getting a quick peek at it it’s fair to say there’s another stunner about to roll down his driveway. On the restoration front it sounds as though a fair bit of time is being spent in the garage by some in an effort to have bikes ready for the rally, Paul is making exceptional progress with his ACE considering he only started back on it a year ago, and after teething problems with engine bearings Stu has almost got the Triumph engine back together. Barry has stripped the Royal Enfield down and is well on the way to adding another motorable khaki green bike to his growing fleet and the rest of us are hoping to get enough spare time to get at least one bike up and running for the rally.

NATIONAL RALLY Lots of enquires are coming in but entries are only trickling, as normal. Also, as normal Carol and Phil are going to be crushed with last minute entries. Some of the organising teams’ wives have stepped up to help cope with the anticipated deluge which will be a big help, so if you are going to be entering the rally it would be great if you could get your entries in sooner rather than later so we can get the local ones processed early before the onslaught begins. We will be asking for display bikes for both the club rooms and the evening events at Clubs of Marlborough so keep in mind we may be shoulder tapping you for your spare bike if its available, we are intending to try and get a diverse range of bikes spanning all years makes and styles. We have had many members both motorcyclist and car owners approach us with offers of help during the rally which we greatly appreciate, as the rally gets closer and we know the numbers attending we will have a better handle on where, when and how many people we need so if we haven’t got back to you yet don’t worry we will, and if you would like to be involved during the rally let us know and we will put you on the list .

PART WANTED Salisbury Differential Hi I am looking for a 1920s Salisbury Differential as I need to replace the crown wheel and pinion in a restoration I am currently completing for my 1920 Davis Phaeton Tourer. I have attached a photo of the differential cover which measures 32mm high and 30.5mm wide. I am hopeful you may have a differential in your parts shed. I am a VCC member of the Canterbury branch.
