Chairman’s Report For the next few months I will be taking it a bit easier, I will be having some treatment and may not be firing on six, but that doesn’t mean I am taking a back seat. If things don’t turn out and it slows me down a little Chris, David, Bob or anyone of your committee will help answer any questions. The branch was well represented at the BRAYSHAW PARK luncheon on Monday 29th October to mark the 50th year. Low key but some very interesting slides put together by John Orchard over the past years. Some interesting ideas came out of the discussions about sound proofing the red man room will report later about the outcome. Chris and Trevor are continuing to put together the list of members joining dates etc so this can be tidied up. Janice and are away for a days from Sunday for a much needed break. VINTAGE MOTORING,

Club Captain’s Report Now the rallies are behind us we should be able to settle into a quieter lifestyle for a while. Fish and chip run to Picton foreshore was an enjoyable evening, with 40 members and their cars in attendance .Noggin and Natter pot luck, another s uccessful evening. Coming up is the Armistice Day run to Tapawera. The plan is to go to the Lake for T and P, then back to the turnoff, and head to Tapawera. The commemoration involves horses and carts and veteran cars. After we have a choice of coming home through Nelson or the same way we went. There is about half hour difference. The December run is at Jim and Jean McLeans property in David St. Jean has an amazing garden and she kindly agreed to share it with us. BBQ to be there so don't miss out.

Secretary’s Scribblings...… Another month has gone past, so I hope you all are thinking about the Christmas season and the lovely time you will have over the period. Sharon and I spent 6 days in the Model A with 6 other couples from Nelson way motoring round the Wairarapa, Tararua, and Manawatu before competing in the 60 th Wellington Rally last weekend. Apart from 4 days of rain we had a great time and the roads we took were excellent. Don’t know about a Rally round the streets of the Hutt Valley though, open country roads are far easier! From this month’s Committee Meeting. Kelly could not be with us to chair the meeting as he and Janice are away for a few days of R and R before Kelly has Chemo treatment each month for the next 6 months for his problem. We all wish Kelly all the best and we will all be thinking of him during this time. From Correspondence from National Office, there are some 40 members who have not paid their subs as at 1 st November so those who have not paid have lost the discount. You will soon get a reminder but please pay ASAP as the branch funds which come to us from this help us run the Branch for the forthcoming year. We have entered the Blenheim Christmas parade on Saturday 1 st December at 3.30pm. Bob O’Malley has offered his Ford AA truck as the Clubs entry in the parade. This will need to be decorated in Christmas theme which I am sure with the talent we have in the Club will be done well. Once again, Dale and her helpers in the kitchen have gone above and beyond, especially with the Friday night function for our 60 th Rally. There were many complementary comments from participants about the food, which was outstanding, and the venue in the museum was very much appreciated with the atmosphere and memorabilia in the room. The Saturday evening meal was provided Rent Event, and this was a great meal and very well done. Consequential to this, the Branches funds are looking healthy as we have made a reasonable amount from the catering for the 2 rallies we have hosted over the past month. There is still plenty of functions on coming up to Christmas. More help in the kitchen would be very much appreciated, especially making Scones every second week, and any volunteers would be most welcome. David Bool offered to make scones if someone wanted to take over the Treasurer ’s job! 11
We have been looking for a while to do something about making the Redman Room more user friendly in that it is often very hard to hear others talking across the table, so some research has been done into a solution for this and a trial will be undertaken soon. There has been a suggestion that for Daffodil day in 2019, we try and include all the Park user groups to make it a Community event to raise funds for the local Cancer society. We already have the Machinery Club and Riverside Rail on board so hopefully won’t be too difficult to get the other users on board as well. On behalf of the Committee I would like to thank all those people who help out around the Club in what ever way. Be it help in the Kitchen, the Museum, mowing the lawns, spraying and weeding the gardens, help in the parts sheds, editing and collating the Vintage Viewpoint, or any other way, a great big thank you, as if it was not for these dedicated people the Club would not function as well as it does. Dates for year-end / start of 2019. We will have our last Wednesday Morning tea on 19th December and resume business on Wednesday January 9th2019. There will be no New Years Eve Noggin and Natter this year. Hope you all have another great month of Vintage motoring, and remember, SCONES!!

VINTAGE VIEWPOINT JANUARY There will be a JANUARY Issue, something we decided in past years as this is the issue before the Heritage Day on the 6th Feb. The deadline for this is Friday 11th January for distribution on Wed 16th January. Any advertising for Heritage Day can be forwarded over the next few weeks as the issue will be mocked up in Dec.
Introducing; John Monson I was a locomotive engineer from Blenheim starting at the railway yards in 1960 working on steam locomotives. I had never been a ‘foamer’, when people foamed at the mouth over trains, but joined the Industry because I saw Rail as a safe job. I worked my way up the ladder spending two years as a cleaner in the steam sheds and then ten years as a fireman before sitting the second-grade Drivers ticket. After four years I was able to sit for the first grade Drivers ticket. Of course today it is completely different. I spent my early career at Christchurch and Ashburton before an opportunity at Blenheim came up where I spent several years. Then I did three years at Picton as acting engine driver working as Fireman on ‘A’ roster and Driver on the ‘B’ roster. Following this I returned to Blenheim coming full circle back to my home town as if I had never left. After 34 years with the railways I retired and worked at Montana Wines for seven years followed by Wither Hills for two years. I then worked for the Marlborough Express for ten years delivering newspapers on a motorbike.

Update from Your Social Convenor Now that Ocober has been it makes Christmas that much closer which is a bit scary. On the weekend of the 5th &6th was our local Bie-annual rally, we catered for the Friday night for about 75 people, consisting of a light meal and then on Saturday we had caterers in, this was a 2 course dinner. A lot of very nice comments about both nights. On the 16th we put on afternoon tea for the Blind Foundation, this was enjoyed by all. They also enjoyed their rides in the old cars. Thank you to those that supplied cars and also to wonderful ladies that worked in the kitchen. Our Pot Luck Natter & Noggin at the end of the month was again another good night with an amazing variety of food. Well as I said Christmas isn't far away but DON'T FORGET OUR CHRISTMAS PARTY ON FRIDAY THE 30TH NOVEMBER. $15pp. Secrect Santa $5.00 present. WILL BE A FUN NIGHT. From the Blokes in the Shed… What a magic month we've had in the shed. All the blokes have had their shoulders to the wheel and been achieving much. Gary Vercoe who has been putting order into our bearings/seals collection, came up trumps with the sale of a quite had to get bearing for one of our 60th Anniversary out out of town visitors. They were delighted to get back on the road and showed their appreciation handsomely. Gary is mentioned in dispatch. John Larcombe put his hand up to volunteer to sell parts for the club at the Canterbury Branch Swap Meet. This was a very successful endevour with over $500 taken. He is promoted from Private Parts to Corporal Punishment for his efforts. Passing traders and members from other branch's have called in as they do at this time of the year to the benefit of both parties. They get lots of old stuff for their projects and our branch coffers are adjusted accordingly. Everyone is happy (we hope). A recent Saturday (7am) and Tris, John and self spent a pleasant 22deg morning getting shot of all the accumulated non vehicle stuff at the railway market. This is a fun endevour, convincing the public they need our products and telling them about our wonderful club and all we do. Several boxes of "marriage rejuvenation were sold, with smiles and laughter all round. Such fun. I wish to thanks all members for their continued support with donations of parts. I'm fearful of mentioning names in case I forget someone, my memory is embarrassing me on occasions especially peoples names, please bear with me. (Note Chris Bird's commentary in last months magazine p17) A big thank you to our lovely Linda Laing for the promotional pics in the October issue of Vintage Viewpoint. The blokes on the front cover were the only ones I could round up at the time! The other’s were probably too busy somewhere else. I thank the "Lovely Rose" who types this report each month, corrects and advises me, censors me now and them, does the add for Parts For Sale and gets it all off to Chris. Great. MEMO FROM THE MUSEUM Over the last couple months we have had a reasonable busy time. Firstly the Model A Rally and our own Bie-annual rally, which, because we held the get togethers in the museum, meant it had to be cleared of cars. Thank those that helped with this and also to the farm machinery members who allowed us to store some of the vehicles in their shed in the interim. For a few weeks the museum was a bit empty but we have now got things back in place and have enjoyed a steady stream of people in viewing them. On Marlborough Annivarsary Day, the Farm Machinery members had an open day and there was a large number of people thru our museum. We have had some great comments regarding our museum. Thank you to all that have helped during the year. An elderly coup[e went to the Cheers Bill doctor for a general health check: He said "physically you are fine but your memory recall is getting a little suspect so I recommend that at home you start writing things down. Later that evening while watching TV husband got up and said "I am going into the kitchen, do you want anything?" Wife: "Yes, some ice cream please, oh, and write it down." Husband: " I don't need to write that down. My memory's not that bad!" Wife: "I want some whipped cream as well so write it down" Husband: Irritated now says : i don't need to!!!" Wife: "Add some strawberries too please so write it down" Husband: I. Don't. Need. To. Write. It. Down!!!! 20 minutes later he returns with a plate of bacon and eggs. Wife: I TOLD you, WRITE IT DOWN!! Husband: What's wrong? Wife: You forgot the toast! Sent in by Chris Bird 16
Motorcycle Notes Our October ride was the branch 60 th anniversary rally for which three motorcycles were entered. David McKelvey and two of the Harris team. Before any one sniffs and says “poor show” I would suggest you pause and blow your nose. Three is over 10% of our active motorcyclists and if we add in the regular riders who entered cars rather than their motorcycles the % is even higher so statistically we probably equalled the entry of our car-oriented members. Talking with members from other branches motorcycle entries at other branch rallies are as rare if not rarer than locally and with some branches motorcycle entries are nonexistence. It is the same old story. Motorcycles feel vulnerable riding amongst large or even small groups of cars, especially when the car driver may be having a domestic with his navigator or admiring the scenery. Of the three motorcycles entered David was the best performer doing more of the actual rally than the other two. Well done David. NATIONAL RALLY We are sort of marking time at the moment doing what can be done before the entry deluge when we will have a better idea of the numbers. However, every month we tick off a few more boxes. Glenn took a site at the Canterbury Swap meet with the intention of displaying posters, rally information and entry forms. Unfortunately the weather on Friday was such any paper on display which did not get soaked would have blown onto the Chatham Islands an area we are not expecting any entries from. However, Zig distributed the information in the Canterbury Motorcycle Clubroom. From conversations Zig and Glenn had, indications are there will be a good Canterbury turn out. I also had some positive comments regarding the Nelson entry during our recent branch rally. Our thanks to Lyall for checking out the two rally routes through Picton for us. The routes are now virtually ready for final drafting. SHINY PARTS AUCTION The date offerings for the auction are small. That’s numbers small not items small. It looks like there will be the usual VCC last minute rush, just like rally entries which will see the team doing the cataloguing taking happy pills prior to the auction getting started. To avoid that situation, sort out your unwanted auto parts, book, bric a brac, etc and get it to Trev at 6 Milford St, or Earl and Rose at 27b Adams Lane. 17
It would be a good idea to phone before you come (Trev) P: 578 4142 or (Earl) P: 577 7839. Better still drop the items to the clubrooms on a Wednesday morning. Fruit, vegetables and cooking can of course be left until closer to the event. Clubrooms will be open late Sunday morning for last minute deliveries and at 1pm for even later items. Major knock up will raise the gavel to commence activities at 1.30pm.
