Chairman’s Report For those of you who did not do the night trial you missed out on a good run. Thanks Chris, Sharon and the ladies for the hot soup, home made buns and dessert. Another AGM has been and gone and a good afternoon was had by all those who attended, followed by a lovely afternoon tea, thanks everyone. I must take this opportunity to thank the two outgoing committee members for their time and effort, both Lyall and Tony have contributed a huge amount of time and our club is in good shape as a result. On behalf of all members I sincerely thank you both. To the two new replacements - Dale and Don; welcome. We look forward to having you on the committee. Suggestions were made by a couple of members during the AGM on “ how do we get younger people to join our club.” Ideas please. We are in the process of purchasing a defibrillator and a good first aid kit for the club rooms and also to take out on our outings, then later on replacing about 50 or so new chairs. Thanks to Kevin and Kath for their help in removing the plum trees and trimming up around “Harris Glade,” and not forgetting the efforts by the model A. What can I say about the new shed or is it the old one flashed up a bit, looks like we own it now. Only the concrete pad to lay and the container shifted into place and this part will be finished. Good effort guys. There is some strong feelings being felt by some of our members about just what is happening regards to Brayshaw Park and what Heritage Trusts roll is going to be in total. We as a committee will be keeping an eye on this and will report when we get the information, so watch this space. To speedy recovery to all members who are not well. VINTAGE MOTORING, Kelly

Club Captain’s Report The month started out with the Events Trial organised by Tony and Jen. Held at the Gallaways property and by all accounts this was an enjoyable and interesting event. Mothers Day out, with lunch at various wineries, was well attended and the men made afternoon tea at the Clubrooms afterwards. I think we may go to a pub for Fathers Day. Chris and Sharon's night trial led some astray, but all members were pleased to return to the warm Clubrooms for hot soup and buns. The A.G.M. was very well attended and Lyall and Tony called it a day after years of loyal service. Don Lainge and Dale have joined the committee and Chris Bird is our new secretary.

Update from Your Social Convenor Not a lot to report as winter has arrived and we have had some rather cold days it is so nice to stay at home by the fire, so it was nice to see all those that put there winter woollies on and came to our our soup and bun night. The AGM is over for another year and thank you to everyone that supplied a plate for afternoon tea, what a great selection of food. Our “natter & noggin” on 29th June is a Pot Luck and our Midwinter Christmas dinner is 12.30pm on the 1st July at the Springlands Tavern. See you all then, look after yourselves and Keep Warm!

Happy 90th Birthday - John May John has been a member of the V.C.C. Marlborough Branch for almost 60 years. He has served on the branch committee and served a term as chairman which coincided with the 1972 F.I.V.A. 13th International Rally an event that attracted 762 entrants many of them from overseas. Marlborough’s part in the event was to run the Rally feature. A competitive relay around the extended Hawkesbury circuit. The event was officially called the 24 hour Le Mans Replica Grand Prix d endurance and as branch chairman John had the mammoth task of organising the event thrust upon him. This involved getting the Power Board to run power to various areas around the circuit, field kitchens for the entrants and workers, toilets, and radio ops room and headquarters, lap scoring and scorer’s, road closures, spectators parking and viewing areas, publicity, p.a. systems, tents, stretcher’s and blankets, hay bales, fire and ambulance back up, verge mowing and fire breaks etc etc. Bear in mind our branch membership at the time may have hovered around fifty. If on learning the enormity of the task confronting him John had resigned and joined a golf club it would have been understandable. To his credit the event was a great success. John has also been instrumental in recording the history of the Marlborough Car, the Jeffries truck and the garages of Marlborough. Since he retired from the workforce he has been an active motorist and restorer. His last restoration the Chrysler was of a standard good enough to win the Popular Vote Cup, the Mortimer Cup and the Whimp Trophy. He is one of a very small group of members who have been awarded a Branch Honary Membership. 6
From the Blokes in the Shed‌ With the AGM behind us, the blokes continue as last year with no changes to our management team. Bruce is on light duties as he helps his Dulcie through her health problems. We're all thinking of you both. It's all a matter of continuing all the good work done thus far. We received 8 sets of LED lighting units and Lawrence has leapt into the gap and mounted them up in the rebuilt old shed. Maurice is kindly sorting the wires, should throw good light on the shelves, as winter approaches. Sorting parts out of the container has been a revelation with things appearing out of old rotten boxes that have been around for 20-30 years. Such fun and one of the regulars is a nice bearing packet, with a lovely knackered old bearing all wrapped up in the original grease proof paper. What bloody use would a mechanic think it would be good for, makes you wonder. Second hand burnt valves, worn king pins and shackle bolts that look like mini crank shafts, are just some of the stuff that has to be sorted. BUT amongst it all, is all manner of treasure, like a banana box full of packs of new old stock Packard parts. Pity we didn't find it before the Packard visit last month. Also coming to light were some N.O.S. BMC window chrome surrounds still in their sealed wrap, was a good find. And so it goes on.... Johnny J and his willing team are putting foundations down in the yard for our container to sit on. This will house the differentials/nuggets/brake drums/axle shafts, so at long last they will be out of the weather. The fun continues. Cheers The Major

Motorcycle News Eleven people took the opportunity to have their bikes put through the Vic process thanks to Dave and Ray for taking the time out on a Sunday to do this for us. There was a good range of bikes present from Chris’s original condition AJS to George’s very nicely restored Yamaha which is considered to be the bike that Triumph should have built, George had the misfortune of having the bike nearly finished when the earthquake sent a pumpkin plummeting out of the rafters to implant itself in the petrol tank necessitating a complete repaint. Roy had he Vincent special through as well probably making Dave and Ray scratch their heads a bit as we don’t have many specials in the local club so its good to have a bit of variety coming through, another sign of a change is the number of Japanese bikes being used on club runs with another two being VICed on Sunday these are now seen as an appreciating and desirable classic. While the bikes were being given the going over the motorcycle display area in the museum was given a tidy up and bikes cleaned and floors swept, on discovering the cut away car engine was no longer working an enthusiastic team descended on it with one crescent and a screwdriver and soon had it back up and running again ready to chop off any inquisitive fingers that got to close, well done. Damien volunteered to make an engine stand for the spare Precision motor so that could be displayed better and by the following Wednesday it was done and sitting in place and he has also started making the wooden plaques for the rally class prizes. Hutch has also been slogging away making road signage for the rally so thanks guys much appreciated. After the tidy up it was off for lunch, well done everyone for the tidy up there have already been several comments about how good it all looks so give your self a pat on the back and thanks to Bill for letting us run riot and shift things around. Positive Earth Rally For those of us with “green” credentials, a major event is the Positive Earth Rally that is held in early December. This years rally was held at Little Wanganui, with, for those of a manly disposition (apologies Viv) or naïve stupidity, a detour through the Mackley Track. Leaving Renwick in the company of two fine upstanding Triumph riders, Phil T and Pete S, we headed to Murchison for the Friday rendezvous at the Hampden Hotel. While having a fuel stop and refreshment at St Arnaud, Pete noticed that the rubbish bins were padlocked, we assumed that there were marauding gangs of rubbish thieves in the area. The reason for the locked bins came shortly afterwards, as an el cheapo camper van stopped on the forecourt, out gets one of the great unwashed who inhabit them, with a bag of waste in her hand, heading for the bin unaware of it's secure status. Having tried to open the bin and failed, she walked back across the forecourt bag in hand, and climbed back into el cheapo campervan and drove away. We just stared and laughed, and as entertainment was now over we carried on our journey.
amounts of food, refreshments, much laughing, bullshit and a debagging. Saturday morning arrived with mist on top of the hills but promising to burn off, after a good breakfast the bikes were loaded up. Phil T who was not doing the rally headed for home, I rode up to the Two Rivers Cafe to rendezvous with the rest of the crowd and wait for a few who couldn't make Friday night.
Just after 10.30 we left the cafe for a ride through the Buller Gorge to Iron Bridge where those doing the Mackley track would split off. The ride through the Buller was awesome with little traffic and good road conditions. At Iron Bridge, 5 Nortons, 3 Triumphs, 1 AJS and an Armstrong (made by CCM for the British Army), turned off for a 2½ to 3 hour ride through the Mackley track, which had been described to us as a bit rough with two gnarly bits. The first couple of k’s were just seriously dusty gravel. We then came to a long uphill drag with lots of loose rocks and ruts but still fun, and after about 5k's the leading group, which included all the Triumphs and the Armstrong, pulled up for a breather and regroup. It was Our next stop, The Owen River where decided that next stop would be the we purchased a couple of pints of dust Mackley River, where we would check settling juice before heading to our the crossing by walking it first. We then accommodation, the Kiwi Park Holiday Camp, where we caught up with many other fine upstanding members of the Positive Earth community. With what looked like a mighty thunder storm heading our way we decided now would be a good time to head for the Hampden Pub. We walked there to the sound of crashing thunder and flashes of lightning, but fortunately the rain waited till we were well down the first pint. A fine evening was had with appropriate 9
set off for some more bone shaking fun, the final approach to the river was quite steep, strewn with rocks, fallen debris, potholes and ruts with plenty of loose stones. I became merely a passenger on the descent, and having arrived at the river I saw the Armstrong was going straight through followed by the pre-unit Triumph. I decided to follow, and after lots of slipping, sliding, spinning wheels and a cooked clutch I arrived on the other bank under my own power. Pete S was next over with just a bit of a push half way across from other riders in the group. Then the real work began when the Nortons arrived. The first one tried to do an impression of a submarine and failed badly, but with spark plugs removed, rider kicking hard, and with the exhausts acting as fireman’s hoses, once the water wasn’t where it shouldn’t be it lived again - although its headlight was still quarter full of Mackley River. After much shoving, pulling and sweating all the Nortons were across, leaving Viv's AJS, which was majestically carried across to avoid any magneto problems, if Viv had decided to sit on the bike as it crossed it would have been reminiscent of Cleopatra being carried across the Nile. Once through the river the next challenge was to get up an eroded riverbank with a nasty lip at the top. All the bikes made it safely, with some needing a couple of goes, apart from the last bike to attempt it which was a Norton. The rider having dutifully followed the advice of “give it some beans” gave all present the spectacle of a Norton trying to break it's earthly bonds to become an aeroplane (video on YouTube, “Mackley Crossing”or https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=EPpstOQU4-Y ). After much laughing and concern, rider and bike were raring to go again minus one foot peg At this point we were reliably informed there was only one tricky bit left.

This involved crossing a stream followed by a steep hill with a couple of turns. Having crossed the stream the first three of us stopped to help the others across. The first to set off on the climb was Viv, and with the putt putt putt of her AJS disappearing up the hill and round a corner, there was a shriek, a profanity, and then silence. Pete S and I set off on foot up the hill to find Viv trying to pull her bike back from the edge of a steep bank with a stream at the bottom. After a Herculean effort in 30 degree heat, and dressed in bike gear all the bikes made it to the top. We rested there for a while and those with water shared it (most hadn't bothered taking any, who would need it on a 2 ½ hour ride?). At this stage, Pete S’s bike was having “clutch issues”, but these were mostly resolved by draining several pints of Mackley River from the primary chaincase. Having been assured the worst was behind us, we set off feeling good, only to round the next bend and find another rock strewn, potholed, “steep as” climb that went on and on, by this point heat and dehydration was making life hard. At the next stop I was talking to a couple of guys when I heard Pete's bike arrive, when I turned round he was nowhere to been seen. Walking back to his bike I found he had crawled into the shady undergrowth like an animal gone to die. Having peeled off all his riding gear to cool down, he rejoined us to
begin the last leg which we were told was just fire breaks, so easy going - yeah right! It could be best described as like an old lava flow going up and down hill with ridges, steps, ruts and plenty of loose rock of all sizes. After that rocky section, followed by a bit of loose gravel (which by this time was nothing to us seasoned trail riders), we made it to the Denniston Plateau, and then back on to tar seal. Tar seal to tar seal had only taken us six hours instead of the two to three hours suggested, and we were all physically and mentally exhausted. The ride down from Denniston was fantastic, swooping round the hairpins with late afternoon sunshine and magnificent views along the coast. Having failed to find the Granity pub, we stopped at the Ngakawau Tavern for what was probably the best beer of our lives. Fully refreshed we had an awesome ride over the Karamea Bluffs with all ten riders and machines finally arriving at Little Wanganui. We caught up with our green credentialed pals who had been considering calling Search and Rescue (we were supposed to meet them at the Seddonville pub about 2 to 2.30). We had a great evening with heaps of food, plenty of drink and lashings of bullshit and tall tales. In the morning the two Nortons that lost foot pegs were repaired and the headlight was drained of water. Then it was off to the beach to spread a former members ashes before we left. I had a good ride
back as far as Speargrass flats, after I overtook a truck my primary drive belt decided to do an impression of a birds nest. Fortunately my AA card was up to date, so having watched smug Norton owners ride by with a cheery wave I finally got home on the back of a truck. Despite the breakdown I think it was the best weekend I've had on a motorbike, with the most memorable things being the phrase “The worst bit’s over, it’s all easy going from here”, and the best tasting beer I ever had!

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE MARLBOROUGH BRANCH VCC OF NZ (INC) HELD IN THE REDMAN ROOM BRAYSHAW HERITAGE PARK SUNDAY 27 MAY 2018 AT 1-30PM The chairman welcomed all those attending and opened the meeting with 53 club members present. A minute’s silence was asked for in memory of Club members who had passed away during the past year. MATTERS ARISING Nil CHAIRMANS REPORT Well what a year for our club. First up was the National AGM and Executive meeting in August held at the Clubs of Marlborough, then a fortnight later we got involved in a fundraising exercise suggested by the national Management committee for a Daffodil Day Vintage Car Run to raise funds for our local Cancer society. We as a committee did not think that we would raise enough money, so set about to do our own thing and the rest is history. The result was a cheque for $8000.00, this was a great effort for a first time up. These events are not going unnoticed and a big thank you must go to our members and the locals for getting in behind us. Comments from the national Body and

members from Sister Branches and also visitors from several other one make car clubs have made favourable comments and in many cases are very envious of what we have as a branch. Another major event being organised by our branch is the National Motorcycle Rally to be held in February 2019, this is in the hands of a small but well organised and dedicated team. We have had a steady stream of new members joining us, a very warm welcome, make yourselves known and don’t be afraid to get involved. This branch is extremely fortunate to have good members looking after key areas, the kitchen under the guidance of Dale and her dedicated team of ladies, the museum under the eye of Bill and his team, spare parts “well what can we say about this bunch of guys” with Tiger and Earl and their team do a wonderful job. To maintenance led by Lawrence and his merry men, what a team effort these guys have done with restoring a couple of old sheds and tidying up the parts compound. This will be ongoing. Again we are fortunate to have a good dedicated editor in Chris and also a reliable couple in Barry and Marg who look after the distribution of our Vintage Viewpoint Magazine and the meticulous job in the library. I would be amiss if I didn’t mention the excellent work our club captain Bob has done, not only this year, but for the last three years. Some very memorable trips, Fighting Bay, three trips into the sounds, the involvement with the steam training its first year and not to mention our BBQ outings with David, Tony and company cooking a mean sausage or two. We have had a very good year socially.
Financially we are in good heart with David looking after the and keeping an eye on the dollars and cents. Tony as secretary keeping the records in order and our committee for their attention to the business of running our club. To those who have contributed throughout the year no matter how small the job, may I on behalf of all members THANK YOU for an excellent year. Chairman : Kelly Kelly Landon-Lane/ Ed Matkin carried TREASURERS REPORT Once again the club has had a very busy and financially successful year. The external outings arranged by our Club Captain have been innovative (vis. Boat Trips, Train Rides and BBQ picnics AND WELL SUPPORTED FINANCIALLY. The two main areas of activity that keep the club viable are the kitchen activities (eg. Natter & Noggin nights, visiting club groups and raffles) and the spare parts sales. The most significant financial events this year were, 1. Running the National AGM 2. The Daffodil Day fund raising for the Cancer Society making a donation of $8000 3. The Wolsley club visit and subsequent meals provided a reasonable financial return 4. The two boat trips to Te Puru which involved a total of 120members and visitors and which were fiscally neutral. (well nearly!)
The club funds at 31 st March 2018 show $13,000 in our working account, and just under $50,000 on term deposit for contingencies. We have opened a separate account to provide for the National Motor cycle rally to be held in February 2019 David Bool :Treasurer David Bool/ Ed Matkin carried CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT Firstly I would like to thank everyone for their continued support, friendship and company.
The year started out quite normal with our runs to places like Marfells Beach, Waitata, Fighting Bay and others. Then it got real interesting with what was supposed to be a car rally for cancer, that ended up as a vehicle display, when the whole club showed the rest of the vintage car clubs what we were made of! Raising 20% of the total of all the clubs throughout N.Z. Something everybody should be proud of! Then came the Marlborough Flyer, another project most members got behind and supported, and were rewarded with trips on the train for having their cars on display in Picton. Not only did we enjoy the trips but some of our grandchildren also came along. The two boat trips, with 120 members and friends, were a great success, enjoying a day in the sounds, Dolphins putting on a magnificent display and meeting an old sounds identity who opened up his property, sheds and home to us all. We must make the most of opportunities like this when they come along as they are getting harder and harder to find. Throughout the year we have enjoyed many runs and BBQs so thanks to all who have helped towards this and in the kitchen Bob O’Malley: Club Captain Bob O’Malley/ Ben Habershon carried ANNUAL MOTORCYCLE REPORT Section rides have continued on a monthly basis with an average attendance of 16 riders or members in cars. Several members who no longer ride continue to join us on outings in their cars which is something we welcome and appreciate. Other branch members also join us occasionally and are always welcome. A number of new members have joined our branch in the past year who are listed as motorcycle owners. We look forward to meeting them and assure them they are to come out with us regardless of if their motorcycle is mobile or not. Some new restorations have appeared of a high standard along with some interest13
ing restored or original machines purchased out of the district or in some cases overseas. Regrettably for various good reasons the number of our lady riders has fallen of which is a pity but we look forward to their return when circumstances permit. I my role within the branch and the motorcycle section I am allowed to attend branch committee meetings in a speaking but nonvoting capacity. This is a privilege which is appreciated and I thank the committee for giving the motorcyclists a voice, supporting their activities and co-operating in every way they can. Organising the 2019 National Motorcycle Rally has place a lot of work and pressure on a small number of section members but good progress is being made and the organising committee is working well together. Again, the support of the branch committee especially the branch chairman has been appreciated/. To the section and branch members who have helped organise or made suggestions for the monthly runs, thanks, it is a big help. Finally, a big thank you to Paula who types up the monthly rally committee minutes and circulates them to all concerned as well as typing up the monthly Vintage Viewpoint notes, events and report and forwarding them to the editor and finally email reminders to the section members when a ride is close to happening. Trevor Harris: Motorcycle Section Chris de Wagt/ David Bool carried SPARES CUSTODIAN The twelve months up to the AGM have probably been one of the busiest years for the blokes in recent times. Starting with the electrical shed, Tiger and his helpers have put in many hours and I must say the contents of the shed is looking more like a commercial operation, with everything electrical displayed on shelves for all to see. Tiger’s knowledge and help in “things electrical” is much appreciated. The newly restored original old shed is a credit to a wonderful and hardworking team of blokes and on behalf of all club

members, may I extend grateful thanks to them for their endeavours. The shed sits up nice and straight on extensive foundations, with a nice coat of paint and excellent shelving, the new “old shed” is a credit to the team. The shelves are being restocked hopefully in some semblance of order and eventually one should be able to peruse the shelves like a mini supermarket. On to the Trevor May shed and here poor old Tris and his team are doing an amazing job, sorting a myriad of new old stock. What a job, sorting this lot into some sort of order and making everything on the shelves easy to see with much identified and tagged. As well as that, there’s the hoard of small parts, that Tris is becoming well known for. For the wonderful work done there is still much to do. The new empty container has to be shifted into the yard and sorted. The storeroom’s shambolic state is on the to do list. And the list goes on. Our financial turnover for the year was $7000 plus. We have had a wonderful year on the comradeship and happiness scene. The blokes are a really cheerful lot, with much laughter on occasions and always willing. I extend my thanks on behalf of the blokes, to the branch committee for its support and co-operation on all pertinent matters. To the team of blokes, my thanks indeed. A big thank you to Ed Matkin in ensuring the parts department are abiding by the Health & Safety standards. We also have hi-vis vests as well. Onwards and upwards. KITCHEN ADMINISTRATION It is hard to believe that a year has passed us by and I took on the job of social convenor. It has been a year of learning to cater for functions from small to big but has been a lot of fun.
We have had some very busy days: eg Daffodil Day, Heritage Day and not to mention our Christmas dinner, and last week John May’s 90th birthday just to name a few. It is also very heartening on a Wednesday morning to see so many members turn up for our scones or biscuit smoko’s. These functions could not be organised if it wasn’t for the wonderful ladies that turn up to give their time to help in the kitchen, also the men that come and help. A big thank you from me it has made my job so much easier. I would also like to thank everyone that contributes to the baking when needed for different functions. Thank you also to those who have kept the Redman room vacuumed after morning teas, that is a very necessary task to maintain the appearance of the room and minimise major carpet cleaning. I would again like to thank everyone for their help and support during the year. I have enjoyed the camaraderie, laughs and fun we have had THANK YOU. As for our next twelve months we already have some functions booked so please if anyone or you Know of anyone that would like to come and help either Wednesday mornings or any of the functions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. It may be a bit crazy at times but we do have some fun as well. Dale Nicholas: Kitchen Admin Dale Nicholas/Ben Habershon carried PARK ADMINISTRATION In July 2017 a special meeting was called to amend the constitution to allow an additional two members to join the management committee. Subsequently two new members were elected, John Larcombe (Marlborough Heritage Trust) & Maureen Pask (Rock & Mineral Club) The new Sign for the park stalled when Taylors Engineering closed down. Crown Sheet Metal purchased Taylors Engineering and negotiations restarted to have the sign panels built. An error in the original
design was rectified. In the meantime Riverside Rail cut the Tower to length and fitted new extension legs provided by Eckfords Engineering. The woodworkers Guild sheathed the tower with plywood and Taylormade construction clad this in an off white colour steel. The Foundation for the sign was excavated just before Christmas by Norm Crafar and Robinsons Construction formed the steel work and poured the foundation. The Stamp collectors had their opening Ceremony on the 30 th September. A number of organisations are contemplating residence within the park (The Delta Group, Tua Marina traction & Machinery Club and possibly a technology Centre). Tom Hood - a long time member of the BHPA representing the Miniature Railways has recently retired from his position. There are moves afoot to form a partnership between the MHT and BHPA where it is contemplated that MHT will take over the financial aspects of the Park. Part of the reasoning is that MHT have two council appointed people on the trust and the MDC has significantly changed its attitude to the Park development for its Heritage aspects and funding through the MHT will be the vehicle to source the funding. Tony Smith: Park Administration Tony Smith/Bill Nicholas carried MARLBOROUGH HERITAGE TRUST REPORT A brief overview of the last twelve months One of the highlights of the Trust over the past 12 months was the success of the Heritage Day event at Brayshaw Park. It is still debated that the success was due to the 6th of February being a weekday not attached to a weekend, that no other major local events were on the same day and that the push of advertising attracted the crowds. No matter what the reason, it certainly was a big success. The trust took on the role of organising the event not long before it happened and looks forward to 15
the same success next year. Within the Trust’s operating structure there has been moves to improve its operating documents with updates on Policies and Procedures, along with improving the Financial Plan, theAnnual Plan and the Strategic Plan. This latter plan received welcome assistance from staff from Department of Internal Affairs. The improved documents will mean better definition of procedures, direction and goals for the Trust. With the financial plan updating improved coding has produced better tracking of costs and up to date reporting on expenditure. The Edwin Fox Centre is on track to break even this year and possibly be ahead financially. This is due to increased visitor numbers through increased cruise ships visiting Picton. Extensive advertising is being pursued, the results may be a year or more behind owing to the need to work in with entertainment planning with the cruise boats. The lease for the Edwin Fox Centre was renewed for another 20-year term. Major maintenance carried out included the replacement of the roof on the Edwin Fox Centre, and new lighting fixtures were installed throughout the Marlborough Museum. This replacement became necessary after a fluorescent light fitting caught fire and was discovered before fire took hold. Investigation showed the lighting fixtures posed a serious risk so the Trust sought and received emergency funding assistance from the Marlborough District Council. Extreme high spring tides backed by northerly winds caused problems with access to the Edwin Fox when the path to the ship became flooded. Luckily no water flowed into the dry dock, but the access path was eroded and visitors could not access the ship without getting wet feet. Plans are in place to bund the sea wall and backfill the path to a higher level. Funding to complete the emergency repairs in January 2017 to the dry dock gate was gratefully received as a donation

from the Picton Masonic Lodge. The Trust has been active in forming a Heritage Aviation Section, with Trustees co-ordinating and investigating the need and backing for such a section. Owing to the very early aviation activities in Marlborough being some of the first in New Zealand, such as the early formation of the Marlborough Aero Club, the number of activities during both world wars, the NZ Air Force establishments and commercial activities Marlborough has a varied and noteworthy aviation history. Discussion has already been held with interested parties such as the Aero Club, Omaka based aviation parties, Base Woodbourne and commercial operators to ensure understanding on the scope of the project and that all parties can work together without opposition. Decisions then made by the branch committee can at least be well informed. Kelly also asked members present for any recommendations they would like the committee to focus on. (no recommendations came forth) Ben Habershon raised a point that younger members would like the newsletter clearer in that later model vehicles are also part of the VCC and should be given more recognition to keep these members interested. Chris de Wagt suggested that more people could put articles in the Vintage Viewpoint depicting their vehicles and there are 17
many vehicles in the branch that are of the 60s, 70s and 80’ that are all eligible VCC vehicles. Adrian suggested that different categories vehicles be put in the Vintage Viewpoint Bill mentioned that there are two branch vehicles available for members to use on runs. Earl suggested that an article be written in Vintage Viewpoint to promote Classic cars. Chris de Wagt suggested getting together with all car club groups and that would involve younger people. Sharon Parkes suggested that Vintage Viewpoint be passed on to younger people to give them an insight of the branch activities. Dale - looking for ideas for Natter & Noggin nights, perhaps something different. Kelly- Looking at the possibility of purchasing a defibrillator for the branch that can be taken on runs etc, the cost would be about $2,500 plus maintenance and can be arranged through St Johns. Linda Laing viewed Heritage Day as not being well organised, and Lawrence agreed but people did get into the Park even if they didn’t pay. Kelly responding that the BHPA were aware of this and would address the issues prior to next year. Earl enquired what happens to the money collected - It all goes to the BHPA as that is their main fundraiser for the year. Lawrence has concerns over various aspects of the Parks proposal to not only open it up for other organisations but to build a $1m museum on top of a rubbish dump and fence off park with one entrance only where everyone will pay. This seems to be a similar strategy that occurred at Founders Park in Nelson and resulted with the exit of small clubs owing to the additional costs imposed by the Council. An alternative could be to extend the current museum to the south of the existing museum and that would be on solid ground.

The park was originally set up for likeminded voluntary societies to carry out their activities at times to meet their needs at minimal cost. The proposal that two paid staff would be on the park would create a burden on these societies that would not be sustainable. Currently the MDC pays the rates and insurance on the buildings in the park with users only required to pay insurance on their own contents with a peppercorn annual rental. In response John Larcombe reiterated Lawrence’s comments and added that the park was all on crown land and vested by BHPA. The Heritage Trust has no intention of taking over the land and buildings. Kelly suggested the branch maintain an active role in the park and ensure the branch has the correct information so that we are in a position to make informed decisions Barry Wilson thanked Tony and gave a short summary of his contribution as secretary to the Branch over the past seven years. Trevor Harris also thanked Tony and Lyall for their contributions with Lyall giving many years in various capacities to the branch. Kelly also thanked Tony for carrying out the secretary’s role and for organising the National AGM in Marlborough last year.
