Chairman’s Report I have very little to report this month. Now that the festival season is over and some normality has returned we can look forward to what Bob has organised on the motoring side and what Dale has up her sleeve.
Those of you who have opened the club rooms over the holiday period “Thank You.” Thank you also, to the members who have represented the club at Picton cruise ship visits, I hope you all have enjoyed meeting the overseas visitors and loving the steam train.
A few days before Christmas a few VCC cars and the clubrooms were involved in making a film. It will be interesting to see the results. Bill maybe our new movie star. We say farewell to a long standing member Graham Edwards, our condolences goes to Ngaire and family. Remember our Heritage Day on the 6th Feb, lets have a good turn out of cars and motorcycles please. Thank you. VINTAGE MOTORING, Kelly
Passing lane ... EDWARDS, Graham Richard: On the 7th January 2018, aged 88 years passed peacefully after a battle with cancer. Messages may be sent to 69 Elmwood Avenue, Blenheim 7201. In lieu of flowers, a donation would be appreciated to the Child Cancer Foundation and may be sent to c/- PO Box 233, Blenheim 7240. A funeral service for Graham was held at the Mayfield Chapel, January 11, followed by cremation at the Sowman Crematorium.

Club Captain’s Report The run for December saw around forty members visit Fighting Bay. It was not at all industrialized as I expected, instead we were treated to a large building that seemed to fit into the landscape without creating visual pollution. A large sunny beach, flat ocean and Pohutakawa or Rata trees that had not been affected by the wind greeted us. The plan was to come back to Tony Floods for lunch, but it would have taken a bulldozer to shift anybody before they were ready, so we had lunch at Fighting Bay. A big "thank you" to Tony for arranging the keys. We have been supporting the Marlborough Flyer on all the trips when cruise ships are in port and the
train is running. The interest the visitors take in our cars is gratifying. Thank you to all who have made the effort to support this new venture. Unfortunately we were unable to attend the New Year's Eve party, but heard it was another big success. The kitchen ladies are amazing. January's run to Onamalutu will be over by the time this goes to print so hope it is fine. Cheers

We're off to a good start with a few keen members turning up in an unofficial Wednesday on the 3rd of January. Thanks blokes. Really hot days have been great, but wilting to work in. 2018 has plenty to keep the blokes occupied and is shaping up to accomplish much. When we finally finish restoring "ol number one" shed, the job of filling it back up from the container and the yard will really get under way. If all goes as planned we should have a reasonable organized selection of parts, sometime later this year the thought of someone asking for a certain part and being able to got to an area knowing that there's not other same parts scattered from one end of our complex to the frustrating other. Well hopefully that's the dream. I think we are winning. Anyway 2018 onward and upwards. Cheers the Major
Update from Your Social Convenor Here it is January already and our first scone morning over, which was well attended. Guess the men folk were ready to have a good old chin wag after the holidays. We are starting our social calendar on the 6th February which is Heritage Day, and we would appreciate some home baking for this (thank you to those regulars who contribute, we are very appreciative of the cakes and biscuits we get annually for this fund raiser. If any one would like to give an hour (or more) of their time to help in the kitchen on the day This would also be greatly appreciated. If so just give me a ring phone 03 5784322. Don’t forget our Natter & Noggin night on the 26th January, this is a Pot Luck Meal this month. Looking ahead our February Natter & Noggin is on Friday the 23rd which will be a “Nibble and Movie” night. There will be a charge for this which will be in next months news letter. Thank you again, to all those helped out in the kitchen for various functions we had year. We have had some very comments on what a wonderful we have. Cheers

MOTORCYCLE NOTES At the recent branch Christmas afternoon, the speaker may have raised a few eyebrows when he said some motorcyclists considered car and truck drivers were homicidal in their attitude to motorcycles. Within days he learnt one of our branch motorcyclists had been riding through Renwick in a line of cars. A car driver on a side street waiting to cross the road saw a gap in the line of cars and accelerated into the gap not noticing the space was occupied by a motorcycle. The resulting collision did major damage to the front end of the motorcycle and left our member with bruises, asphalt rash and no doubt a large amount of anger especially as the restoration of his machine was only completed a few months ago. It is a small consolation the motorcycle wheels had not done half a turn more or the impact would have been dead centre possibly writing off the machine and the riders leg. We wish the member all the best in sourcing replacement parts. The Christmas afternoon speaker rests his case. Commiserations to Ron whose Aerial suffered a seizure after the rest home visit. Other machines have been undergoing mechanical repairs recently, David’s Bantam has missed the last two runs, a very rare occurrence, as an oil leak is repaired. Anthony’s BSA combo has also been getting some TLC. Deb has purchased a 1954 BMW off a local member which Kim had out on a 7
recent run and Barry’s Jubilee Triumph has now qualified for the cheaper rego and has been dragged back out into the sunlight. Numbers were a little down at our pot luck Christmas lunch but it was good to see a number of wives and partners turning up. A big thanks to the ladies who took over the kitchen, set the tables, washed the dishes and the table clothes etc. As time passes Glenn and myself are putting more time into the 2019 National Rally so it would be a big help if some of our section members organised some of the monthly rides, if anyone has any ideas for future runs please contact Glenn or myself. Motorcycle News The Waterlea rest home residents enjoyed viewing the motorcycles and meeting the riders who visited the home on our Christmas ride. Thanks to those who turned out it was appreciated. Unexpectantly the caregiver at the rest home got most of the riders to bring their bikes up to be viewed and too give a brief speech on their bikes, well done to those that did, some of us were more calculating and reverted back to schoolboy habits and slowly retreated to the back of the class, avoiding all eye contact and nipped around the corner out of sight, caregiver’s obviously well versed in finding people who aren’t where they are supposed to be, cornered us and after still being 8
reluctant to partake in show and tell Maggie announced in a loud voice “oh, their bikes must be shit”. Now I don’t know if the other two hiding with me were offended or not but I was rapt. Suddenly my 1980 single cylinder Honda was being categorised in with the iconic clubman’s racer of the 50’s and 60’s and a now much sort after and gathering a bit of a cult following multi cylinder Honda, excellent! Over Christmas several members were seen at the Stoke Classic Bike swap meet and show with at least two seen carrying boxes back to their boots. A new event staged this year was Steve giving a maintenance and starting technique tutorial on two strokes during the swap meet, this was quite informative and the subsequent blue cloud that enveloped Mindy and three quarters of Stoke was quite impressive. Annual occasion when we show our motorcycles off to the public. If anyone has a bright idea for adding some extra interest to the display let me know but be prepared to assist in organising the extra interest. February Sunday 18th Leave the park at 11am for a ride through the Queen Charlotte track to have lunch in Picton.
