From the Chair Hello Everyone, We had a good turnout for the combined meeting between our branch and Central Hawkes Bay Branch with 64 people sitting down for dinner. Kaaren and Jim Smylie gave an interesting presentation about driving Route 66. The Vintage Rally was a great success with 24 cars taking part. Goff Briant and Angela Cameron were the winners and it was very pleasing to see new members Owen and Vivienne Reid come second. David McDermid and Mihi Backhouse from Whanganui Branch came third. The swap meet planning is well in hand though we could do with a couple more helpers on the gate. Please get in touch with me if you can spare an hour and a half on the day. Thank you to all of those who have volunteered already.
We are holding a working bee at the Grove on 16 October. This is being held during the week because the venue is booked most weekends. Please see a notice for this elsewhere in the Tourer. Our club night on 17 October is being held in the morning. We have someone coming at 10 am to do defibrillator training. We will start at 9:30am with morning tea. November Club Night is our Christmas Dinner. Please see notice for this elsewhere in the Tourer. It has been encouraging to see more and more members out with their cars at our events. From Head Office
A polite request from Julie at our Head Office regarding internet banking: “It is most important to put the reference, as stipulated on the annual invoice, when doing a Direct Credit in to our account. It is extremely time consuming trying to work out who a payment may belong to”. Currently 4 issues. 1. 16 pages of Direct Credits today, and 14 individual payments have not put the correct reference. I have managed to identify (with some difficulty – spending just over 1½ hours on them), but there is still one which I cannot identify. The name on the deposit is MA & KP & TL BURN. I do not have any surname BURN with those initials (in fact there are only two with the surname BURN and it isn’t them and besides, they have already paid and the initials are different). So who is this? 2. I have another payment that has come in on 1 September which I cannot identify. It has no reference except the word “DEPOSIT”. I am unable to identify who this would relate to. There were only four payments put direct in to our bank account on this day, so hopefully if someone sees a notice on this, for 1ST SEPTEMBER ONLY, they will question it 3. I have TWO payments that have come in that I cannot identify. 03 September •

VCC National Day - Daffodil Rally for Cancer
Perfect weather, generosity and a good cause contributed to the success of our second annual Daffodil Rally for Cancer raising a record $60,000.00! We had great feedback and attendance for the 2017 event and raised $40,000.00 for the Cancer Society. I am delighted that this year we increased the amount raised by 50%, and I am very proud of our Club and our members who were involved. There were over 3000 vehicles either on the road or on display on the day. Twentysix branches of the VCC were involved this year and all the money raised will stay in their area and be given directly to the local Cancer Society. Many Branches have commented that the response from the general public has been overwhelming, both in attendance and in their generosity. One of the lovely outcomes of this event is the interest generated in the Vintage Car Club, which has resulted in new members. I would like to congratulate and thank those Branches involved in the day for their enthusiasm and effort which has not only benefitted the Cancer Society, but also our Club with the public profile it creates. This day is a wonderful achievement for Branches and members who can be very proud of what they have accomplished. Our National Day has become a special event for the Club, and it can only get bigger and better from here! VCC ID CARDS RENEWAL APPLICATIONS Message from Head Office NZVCC
Please note that all VCC ID Cards have an expiry. This expiry is upon change of ownership, or 10 years from the issue date. Your vehicle must also be as described on the Card. A Renewal form personalised for each vehicle ID Card is distributed by the National Office to current financial members, approximately 3 months before the expiration. Even if your vehicle has had no changes, this form must be checked, signed and forwarded to your Branch, along with the ID Card (if the photo correctly shows your vehicle in its present state), or three new photos, as stated on the form. Upon receipt at the National Office, the ID Card will be reissued and will be valid for a further 10 years unless there is a change of ownership or major changes to the vehicle during that time. It is compulsory for all National and International VCC Rallies that vehicles entered must have a current valid ID Card.

Club Captain’s Corner Notices MID MONTH MEANDER – Thursday 11 October 2018 The October Mid-Month Meander is an approximately 45 mile (75 km) run to Murrayfield Museum & Café for lunch. Meet at the railway station end of the Matthews Ave cul-de-sac (Palmerston North) at 10.30 am. You can check out the Café menu on the internet: https://www.murrayfield.co.nz/ . There are a few kilometres of main road driving on SH57, so whether for that reason - or any other reason, don’t forget that if it is not convenient for you to use your club eligible vehicle on any of the branch events you are more than welcome to join in using your ‘modern’. END OF MONTH RUN – Saturday 27 October 2018 Meet at 1.00 pm at the Chesters Plumbing and Bathroom carpark in Tremaine Ave, Palm North for another ‘longish’ October run – again of approximately 45 miles (75 km). This is a drive through easy country roads to a café for afternoon tea. MID MONTH MEANDER – 11 November 2018 Each year Woodville celebrates Armistice Day in Fountain Square off Ormond Street. This year it will be on Sunday 11th November. A great deal of planning has been put into the 2018 celebrations and this has enabled the Vintage Car Club to be invited to attend. Arrangements have been made for our cars to be parked in the Square (provided that the organisers are not swamped with attendees and there is room). Vintage cars will need to be at Woodville and in the Square centre (the park) no later than 10.15 am. The Armistice Day programme starts at 10.30 am with school children from the district fastening large poppies onto bamboo poles. Each of the poles will signify one of the 87 men that died overseas during the war and who had lived in Woodville. That will be followed by a service in the Square which will be finished by 11.00 am. Overall it will be a great public day in the park with the Vintage Car Club having been invited to attend and stay over for lunch – whether they bring a picnic lunch with them or head off to the main street to find something to eat. It is understood that the Lions are also arranging for the sale of food in the park. If there are sufficient VCC members attending, arrangements will be made to have hot water

available for tea and coffee which our members can use over lunch. Following the 30 minute ceremony there will be a display in the local museum nearby to the park and a luncheon in the drill hall for the Military who will be attending, along with a town luncheon for the over 75’s. The local radio station will be playing appropriate music in the park up until about 1.30 pm and there will be a concert in the old folks hall for the older town residents. Going by previous years it should be a great day. So that an adequate amount of parking can be set aside in the Square centre for VCC vehicles could you please advise me no later than Thursday 1st November if you are intending to attend. Reports THE 2018 VINTAGE RALLY by Bryan and Catherine Abraham The Vintage Rally this year was organised by Dave & Esther Williams. Although the planning was started many weeks prior to the event and the route had been well checked by them, the elements ensured that the best laid plans were going to be disrupted. On the Sunday before the rally the final check of the route revealed multiple slips on some of the roads, passing which would have caused unnecessary risk. So less than a week from the event, and with no guarantee that the slips would be cleared that week, Dave & Esther set out planning, writing, driving and then checking a new route to get us all safely to the destination. And as well as setting a great run they arranged one of the finest and warmest days that we had seen for quite some time, which, for the 24 entrants, made for a great rally. Eight of the entrants who joined the rally this year did so in Post Vintage or later classification vehicles. It was great to see these members taking advantage of the opportunity to get their cars out of the shed and onto the road.

At the briefing Dave was asked whether there was any straight line navigation. The answer was no, and there wasn’t, but once on the road and into the Feilding township entrants discovered the next best thing – nine instructions in a row all reading ‘Take the XXX (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th) exit at the roundabout’. This had entrants driving around in circles - passing other entrants going in the opposite direction, or seeing other entrants entering roundabouts from a different street than the one that they themselves had just used to enter the same roundabout. For a few brief moments anyway, many were doubting whether they had mucked up somewhere. But once away from the Feilding town centre it was onto Sandon Road and into Halcombe, then north to Dunolly, down to Beaconsfield, and after a short drive on sealed roads onto the first unsealed section. A bit of sealed road then back onto unsealed Forrest Road where we came across one unhappy car which although still running was well down on power. A replacement spark plug resolved the problem, although during the process of leaving the scene we found that we were stuck – having pulled the left side of the car off the gravel road onto soft ground before stopping. A push and we were back on the road and continued on our way to Kimbolton. From Kimbolton the morning route took us east along Rangiwhahia Road and then after a right turn onto Apiti Road and a few more miles of sealed road we arrived at the Apiti Tavern which was the lunch destination. The dining room had been closed off to the public and set up for our event. While waiting for the meal people mingled over drinks in the grassed backyard behind the Tavern and on the sheltered decking area off the dining room. Photo 6f After a very delicious meal prizes were presented to the first three place-getters. This decision was based on the answers to fourteen questions en-route, plus the length of time taken to negotiate the

morning section. 1st prize went to the Goff Briant team - (Goff, and Angela & David Cameron) (see cover photo) 2nd prize went to Owen & Vivien Reid - (new members)
3rd prize went to David McDermid & Mihi Backhouse (from the Wanganui Branch) After a bit more chatting people slowly moved off – some taking a direct route back to Kimbolton and others tackling the afternoon instructions which took us further north, through Rangiwhahia, and then back to Kimbolton (with a few more miles of unsealed road.). Most people stopped at Hansens Café in Kimbolton for afternoon tea, as planned, before heading home after a relaxing day out.

Manawatu VCC cars by the decade
1980’s By Phil Robertson 1. Name of Maker - Toyota 2. Model – Starlet DX 3. Year - 1984 4. Body – 3 door sedan 5. Country of manufacture – Japan but assembled at the Toyota plant in Thames, NZ. 6. History of the manufacturer– the joys of Wikipedia………….. The history of Toyota started in 1933 with the company being part of the Toyoda Automatic Loom Works but devoted to the production of cars under the direction of the founder’s son, Kiichiro Toyoda. Toyota Motor Co was established as a separate company in 1937. The Toyota Starlet was produced from 1973 to 1999 with the rear wheel drive being replaced by front wheel drive in late 1984. 7. When first registered in NZ – November 1984 in Christchurch. 8. When did you acquire it? – from my mother in Christchurch in November 1992 when it had done approx 113,000 kms. 9. What condition? – the car was registered and had a current WOF when we got it off my mother but it needed the engine reconditioned as previous owners had fitted a 4K (1300cc) engine that had, once we pulled it apart, a large amount of wear internally so my brother and I got to and reconditioned the engine. This is still the same engine that is currently fitted and the car has now completed over 425000 kms. 10. Who restored it? – only the engine has been rebuilt and the body will hopefully be repainted in the next 12 – 18 months. 11. Mileage travelled since restoration – approx. 425000 kms since brand new. 12. Pet name and why? – ‘the Fartlet’ as when our kids were school age, they named it. It was their daily vehicle to and from school as we were in the countryside around Feilding which didn’t have a school bus service. 13. Details of engine – the original engine fitted was a 2K (993cc) but somewhere along the line before my mother bought the car, the engine was replaced by a tired 4K (1290cc) engine as well as the 4-speed K40 gearbox being replaced with a 5-speed (K50).

14. Details of car – the car was first owned by an Auckland car rental company and then owned by two private owners before my mother bought it. It is now used as my daily runner between home and work clocking up about 50 – 60 kms a day. 15. Longest journey – probably a trip from the North Island to the South Island to visit family in the Canterbury region for Christmas. We endured camping throughout the journey both before and after Christmas. 16. Funniest incident - probably the same trip from the North Island to the South Island to visit family in Canterbury for Christmas. The trip was eventful as we were supposed to use our Mitsubishi Pajero for the trip but the day before leaving, the Pajero’s radiator decided to spring a leak. The trip south and the camping were still going to happen but it was now happening in the Starlet. With a borrowed roof rack, and the camp gear, tent and kids jammed in the back with gear at their feet, we headed for the ferry and the journey south. After getting our camping gear wet at Lake Rotoiti we eventually got to Canterbury for a great Christmas. 17. Worst incident – many years ago we loaned the Starlet to my father-in-law who subsequently was run into by another car at an intersection damaging the LH front side. Luckily no one was injured and the car was repairable. I guess that’s what you get when you don’t give way properly. 18. Most significant thing to you about the vehicle – the car has sentimental value, I guess, as we have owned it for 26 years, it was my mum’s car prior, we have used it to transport the kids for many, many years and it is still used on a daily basis for work. 19. What other old vehicles do you have? – my grandfather’s 1924 Chevrolet Superior F 4-door rag-top which is under slow restoration after spending 40 plus years under the pine trees. In the VCCNZ directory this car is listed as Toyota Starlet KP60R PGKDS which refers to: K - Engine family P - Platform type - Starlet 6 - Generation 0 - Variation P - Platform G - Body style - 3-door hatch K - 4 speed, floor shift D - Trim level - Deluxe S - Standard engine with single carburettor

The 1929 Essex Coupe that followed me home. by Alistair Howard
Car #1088211, Engine #1154096, Odo (1?)08889 This Essex was first registered in Hamilton on 22 July 1929 to a Te Aroha man with registration plate 39.203 (maybe a car dealer?) then shortly after on 16 Sept to Mr John Clements of Tatuanui. On 12 December 1952 Mr Des Nicholson of Morrinsville purchased the car (an obituary for Des is in Triangle #220). This was his first car he ever owned which he got before he was married. The inside was refurbished some years later and he always kept the car in excellent mechanical condition. He also had a Hudson Jet which is currently owned by David Yorke (former owner was Carl Christensen). Des was active in the HET and VCC clubs. Des died in December 2001 and the Essex was retained by his wife till her passing in 2016 then her children took over as custodians. Late in 2017 they decided to sell the car as it had just been kept in storage, mainly in a farm shed, for nearly twenty years. I received an email from Grant Nicholson outlining their intentions. Early in 2018 I visited his sister Maeline and her husband at their farm near Te Puke where the car was being stored in their farm shed. Needless to say a deal was done and it is now parked in my shed. The car is in remarkable shape, is very complete with a lot of originality but does have some bangs and scrapes with thinning paint in parts and moth holes in the inside roof lining – patina is what they call it!

Sadly the registration did lapse a couple of years ago after so many years of being on hold but LTSA have given the OK to reuse the black plates. My intention is to keep it as it is as much as possible with only essential work being done. The engine is not stuck and does have compression so the sump will be coming off for a thorough clean and a check of the internals. If all looks ok I will reassemble with fresh oil and then see if it will fire and run – fingers crossed that its condition will be reasonable and will run satisfactorily. Next, over time, it will be checking from tip to toe before heading to get a new VIN.
Dominick picks up his Fiat from his mechanic Tony. Tony says, “Dominick, you gotta think about trading this car in. It seems like it’s breakin’ down every other week. I love having you as a customer but this car is costing you a fortune.” “Yeah, but look at it,” Dominick says. “It’s starting to rust, the tires are almost bald, and it’s got like 90,000 miles on it. Some facts about the world auto industry that you may not know –
AUSTIN No, not the Austin of England but the Austin Automobile Co of Grand Rapids Mich USA. 1901-1921, known as “The Highway King.” In 1902 they produced a 2 cylinder car which was much larger than most other vehicles. By 1911 these cars were fitted with electric lights and left hand steering. Following this they featured a very successful two speed axle with a wheelbase of 11’10”. From 1915 they were to produce a smaller and cheaper car and also introduced a 12 cylinder model in 1917; this continued in production until the firm closed in 1921. Their total production was about 1000 cars.
DODGE
Dodge brothers.
The brothers John and Horace were early shareholders in the Ford Motor Co, and were in fact producers of motors for them as well. They introduced their own motor car in 1914 with a four cylinder motor of 3.5 litre producng 25 bhp, with 12v electrics and a back-to-front gear change, features that they kept until 1926. In 1924 they were producing 1000 cars per day! In 1928 Dodge was purchased by Chrysler at a price $175.000.000 U.S. As an additional point of interest, Walter Chrysler was at one stage working for General Motors. Dodge manufactured Ford motors and parts and Dodge became part of Chrysler. The start of the big three?

Following the 1st World War this company changed from arms manufacturing to manufacturing Automobiles, starting with a 2 stroke single cylinder 600cc engine, and become widely known for their unorthodox competition cars with 2 stroke engines of 6 and 8 cylinders. The 8 cylinders of 1500cc consisted of 4 parallel pairs of cylinders; each pair of cylinders shared a common combustion chamber, and with the aid of a Roots blower it developed 60bhp and was reported to reach speeds of up to 95 mph.
