From the Chair Hello fellow enthusiasts, Our November Club Night takes the form of our end of year dinner which is being held at the clubrooms. The speaker will be Derek Haycock who will speak about his recent trip to Europe. The cost is $25.00 per head and is being subsidised by the club. Please inform Bryan Abraham by 14 November phone 06 3584014 or email, bryana@xtra.co.nz if you intend to come. We had a very successful Swapmeet raising over $2000.00 more than the previous highest takings. The committee extends a huge thank you to all of the helpers. On 16 October 17 people helped out at the working bee. Sawdust was laid, trees were trimmed, roses were tied up and a few new shrubs were planted. Thank you to all who came along. A small group attended our first morning club meeting which was an excellent presentation by Roger Fitzgerald from Links, the topic being First Aid and the use of our defibrillator. Club night in December will also be a morning affair where we encourage members to bring their club eligible

cars and swap drivers for a tootle around the grassed area or on the road. Morning tea will be provided. Older members were saddened recently to hear that Graeme Ax had passed away. The Manawatu Branch extends sympathy to his family. The committee has decided to re-cover some of the chairs. Suitable vinyl will be purchased from our long time advertiser Len Shailer Ltd. If members can help with the re-covering of the chairs please get in touch with me. (There is no sewing required). We have had a request for the use of a 1920s or ‘30s pickup or delivery vehicle for use in a backdrop display for a “prohibition era” function which will be held on 17 November. If a commercial vehicle can’t be found the organiser will consider using a sedan of the period. Unique Depression-era car survives for Manawatu vintage car swap-meet This article first appeared in the Manawatu Standard on 5 October 2018
Feilding classic car enthusiast Dave Livingstone, and his near-unique 1927 Paige coupe, one of only two left in the world, that he restored from bare “bones” over four years.
There’s a tale behind every vintage car, especially a Depression-era classic that ended up the last of its kind. Dave Livingstone’s 1927 Paige coupe is one of only two left in the world, and he was bringing it to the Manawatū Vintage Car Club annual swap meet at Manfeild on Saturday. The coupe survived coming to the other side of the world, being cut down into a boat tractor and left to rust under a hedge for nearly 60 years. The Feilding man lovingly rebuilt, restored, and maintained the classic coupe but its history has left it with a few quirks. “We call her Mrs Paige ... because she does have a bit of a mind of her own in respect to how she runs.” The 1927 model was the last Paige built before the Great Depression forced it into a merger with another American car-maker. The resulting company folded altogether in 1940. Livingstone said it was incredibly rare for any Paige car to have made it down to Australasia, and even rarer one survived. The Tourer
Somehow Mrs Page ended up with a Whanganui family in the 1940s, he said. They cut off the body, and moved the sawn-off coupe to their Taupo property to use as a tractor to take a boat in and out of the lake. “They obviously didn’t use it much because they left it next to a hedge long enough it grew right over it.” The Paige lay there until a subsequent owner of the property burned off the hedge in the 1950’s. A Waituna West collector visiting them at the time recognised the uncovered hulk as a rare classic – and it ended up in his shearing shed. Some time afterwards Livingstone visited the shed to buy a classic Ford V8 coupe. The second he saw the Paige his interest was diverted. “It was just bones. But half the fun of it is trying to rebuild them and get them running again.” Livingstone and a friend rebuilt it from the wheels up over the next four years.

Please note that all VCC ID Cards have an expiry. This expiry is upon change of ownership, or 10 years from the issue date. Your vehicle must also be as described on the Card. A Renewal form personalised for each vehicle ID Card is distributed by the National Office to current financial members, approximately 3 months before the expiration. Even if your vehicle has had no changes, this form must be checked, signed and forwarded to your Branch, along with the ID Card (if the photo correctly shows your vehicle in its present state), or three new photos, as stated on the form. Upon receipt at the National Office, the ID Card will be reissued and will be valid for a further 10 years unless there is a change of ownership or major changes to the vehicle during that time. It is compulsory for all National and International VCC Rallies that vehicles entered must have a current valid ID Card.

WELLINGTON BRANCH MID WEEK RUN TO BIGGIN HILL
– 26 September 2018 From browsing other VCC branch magazines on the ISSUU site it was noted that the Wellington and Horowhenua VCC Branches were promoting a Mid Week run to the Biggin Hill Historic Aircraft Centre at RNZAF Ohakea.
Iriquois Spitfire & 5d Harvard
Having never been to the base before this had to be a contender for an interesting day out, so we ‘enrolled’ (with the base needing names of attendees and car details prior for security reasons) and met up with the group at Viv’s kitchen in Sanson for lunch. It was a good turnout with about 45 people turning up at Ohakea - nine of these being from our branch. Once in the Ohakea Base and parked up we were all keen to get inside the Hanger out of the extremely strong wind that had sprung up overnight. Once inside Brendon Deere moved the group around giving a comprehensive and interesting talk on each of the aircraft on display. Brendon is a private pilot who nearly twenty years ago took the decision to purchase and restore a Spitfire, then approx. six years ago he purchased a Grumman Avenger to add to his Spitfire and Harvard collection.

His collection is housed in his hanger which is (by arrangement) on Defence Force land at Ohakea – named Biggin Hill Hanger. The first aircraft that the group looked at was a 1942 North American Harvard. The Harvard was operated by the RNZAF from 1941 as an advanced trainer for pilots. The one on display was one of 212 Harvards which were used by the RNZAF for pilot training throughout the war and through to 1977. Some of these aircraft continued to be used by the RNZAF precision flying team the Red Checkers until 2015. The Harvard first flew in 1935 and was designed with advanced features such as a variable pitch propeller and retractable undercarriage to prepare US Navy and USAF pilots for advanced fighters such as the P40 Kittyhawk and P51 Mustang. Over 15,000 Harvards were built.
Cheetah Avenger
A Grumman Cheetah came next in the display – a small four seater light aircraft used primarily as a trainer. After the Grumman Cheetah was a Grumman Avenger. These aircraft were designed as a carrier based torpedo bomber for the United States
Navy (hence the folding wings) and first flew in mid 1941. The RNZAF operated 48 Grumman Avengers mostly from Bougainville during the Pacific War, operating as bombers against Japanese targets. After the war a few were based at Ohakea through to 1959. An Italian designed and built Aermacchi military pilot trainer was next to be talked about. The aircraft displayed is one of 18 which operated out of Ohakea. The Aermacchi were retired from service at the end of 2001 when the RNZAF strike force was disbanded. Next around the hanger was the Bell

Iroquois Helicopter. The one on display was built in 1970 and was operated from new by No.3 squadron of the RNZAF. The Iroquois were retired from service in 2015. And the last aircraft to be looked at was probably the drawcard for the day - the Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX. The first Spitfire flew in 1936 and they were used in a wide range of roles. In total some 22,000 Spitfires were built. The Spitfire on display in the Ohakea Biggin Hill Hanger was built in 1944 and served with the RAF in northern Italy. After the war it served with the Italian Air Force before being sold to the Israeli Air Force. After three years in Israel it was sold to the Burmese Air Force where it was retired in 1956 – then mounted on a pole as a gate guardian at a Burmese Air Force Base. In 1999 it was one of three sold - two to the UK and one to New Zealand, where it took six years restoration before its first post-restoration flight. The RNZAF never operated Spitfires although a large number of RNZAF trained pilots flew them in World War 2 with the RAF in Europe. Brendon’s Spitfire is painted in the markings of the New Zealand Battle of Britain Spitfire which was piloted by his uncle - Alan Deere. The Spitfire has the markings AL and Brendon’s hanger (Biggin Hill) is named after the RAF Biggin Hill airfield near London out of which his uncle operated during World War 2. The weather was very good to us on the last day of September which was no doubt a factor that contributed to fifteen cars being taken out for an airing on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The drive to Sanson headed out toward Bunnythorpe, along Waughs Road to Feilding, into Kawa Kawa Road, Lees Road, Sandon Road and Cemetery Road. On this run the cars did not really separate, remaining in one well-spaced out precession which in most cases bought farmers and others that we drove past to a halt as they admired (and hopefully enjoyed) the moving vehicle display. Once in the Café the 29 people on the run filled the room which had been put aside for us (The Landing) and

enjoyed good food with their preferred beverage. MID MONTH RUN TO MURRAYFIELD – 11 October 2018 Ten people made their way to Murrayfield for lunch on a cloudy but fine day. It was a pleasant drive there – out to Main Drain Road, along Taikorea Road, onto SH1 for a short while, then taking Wylie Road to Foxton, the Foxton Shannon Road to Shannon, and SH57 to Murrayfield. Once there we found that the staff had set a table up for us - nicely presented with a crisp white table cloth and carafes of water. Chatting, lunch then more chatting kept us happily occupied at Murrayfield for a couple of hours. Many thanks to those who supported the run.

I read a road test article in 1993 which described an MGB as being just a Morris Oxford pressed into a different and more desirable shape. I am pleased that that is not the case as I am unable to sit behind the wheel of an MGB but fit well behind the wheel of a Morris Oxford. When I transferred to Woodville, one of the requirements of being a small town Policeman was that you were required to provide a car which you used to attend to Police and Court Bailiff work in the Woodville and surrounding area. The Government paid a mileage allowance monthly which you claimed and justified it against the work that you were doing for the Police or the Justice Departments that month. Through a round about set of circumstances on 5 December 1985 I met with Ken Mills (who is still a Manawatu Branch Club Member and was the Mazda Dealer in

Dannevirke), who sold to me a 1965 Morris Oxford Saloon, Chassis No. M/H56 160269 – Engine No. 16 AMWUH 291957 – Registration No. ER920 for the grand sum of $2925. The car had 48750 miles on the clock and was in very tidy condition. What appealed to me about the car was that it was economical to drive, had a good roomy passenger cab, had a 4 speed on the floor gear box, good plain vinyl upholstery, a large boot to carry road crash signs in and other Police items. Other rural Policemen in the District were driving Holden Cars, but they were more expensive to buy, but as a young man with a growing family the Morris Oxford did not stand out as being associated with Policing in the Bush District which suited me. I remember being called to a disturbance at the Dudley Arms Hotel in Mangatainoka and I had another off duty Policeman with me and we pulled up outside the hotel beside a Hillman only to be greeted by a bare chested young well respected local lady leaning out the passengers front window showing us that she really did need the D Cup Bra which she was not currently wearing. After a few words with her driver and friends, they left and drove towards Pahiatua. Inquiries showed that in fact this was the group that had been playing up at the Pub. We drove through to Pahiatua only to catch up with the Hillman to find that they had dropped this young lady and a male friend in the main street as they had decided that Pahiatua needed some entertainment as the Police were out of town and so they were streaking to the fish shop to win a free feed to be paid for by the others in the car. I can say that having your names and address taken by the Police while standing naked outside a busy Fish and Chip Shop in Pahiatua, while waiting for your friend to come back with your clothes was better than paying a fine for disorderly behaviour. I was recently at a function and meet the young lady who is now an older lady (and YES she was fully clothed) and said that the only hit she made at the time was that her grandmother had ridden a horse naked in the main street of Eketahuna as a girl and thought that her granddaughter was keeping the family tradition alive and well. I could tell a number of other stories about the car but wait till I write the book. Joking aside I really enjoyed the car, with the money being paid to use it for the Government meant that I broke even on Insurance, Registration, WOF and day to day running. So on the 26 March 1988 after moving to take up a new Policing Position in Otaki I sold the car with 74800 miles showing on the clock. It was a reluctant sale but I had no storage for this car and a modern car. Also at the time the climate was not right to have this type of car in the Vintage Car Club. Although I was a member of the Horowhenua Branch of the VCC I attended a number of the midweek monthly runs being organised the Wellington Branch. I decided that a more modern car was needed to keep up with the other late model cars that were coming out for the runs. Looking on Trade Me a noticed that there was a Morris Oxford listed with 99000 miles on the clock and was listed for $12,000. The car had a poor description and the photo was only a part one showing the driver’s side of the car. It had the registration plate OXFORD which was being sold separately from the car. Over a number of months the car price came down to where it was offered for $2,000 or near offer. I thought that it was worth a look and so contacted the young owner who made arrangements with me to be at his home at 2.00 p.m. on the following Sunday afternoon. On arrival I found that there were 2 other groups that had to come to look at the car but as I had rung first I had first offer. The car was in a small garage, completely covered in blankets, boxes and other junk and with an effort we were able to pull the car out and with reluctance the young owner agreed to start the car for a short time but could not take it for run as it had blown the back frost plug in the motor. As a dream the car started first off and so I purchased it and later reached a deal over the OXFORD number plate which it bares today. It was not till I went to pick that car up I found that this young chap had inherited the car from his grandfather who in turn turned out to be the man I sold the car to in 1988. The car was tidy but shabby and had obviously been parked by touch as there was many scraps and small dents and some rust showing in the door skins. As a result I took the car to The Shed in Foxton where Murray and team cut the rust out, replaced parts and repainted the car to the standard it is today. I was fortunate that I had seen new old stock parts advertised as a job lot on the internet and so when they were sold I purchased many parts from the new owner. I was able to purchased new tail light lenses, front quarter light windows and rubbers, both front a read screen rubbers, and many new mechanical parts.

The decal on the bonnet was crazy cracked and so when I was in England I went onto a waiting list and when 50 people agreed to purchase a decal they made a production run. With postage and packaged and the decal itself it worked out at $99 to buy landed in New Zealand. It was a lot but worthwhile. However the chrome surround that holds the decal had a broken pin and so I was able to get a new old stock item for $10. When we went to fit it we found that it still had an original 1965 factory decal as good as the day it was made in the new chrome surround. Adding the price of the 2 together and then divided it the price does not seem so bad. (Since then I was given another new one by a chap who I had never meet before at the Dorset Steam Fair in England last year). The interior is in good condition apart from the front seat where the stitching had rotted and I was able to locate a small piece of the original vinyl which allowed the seat to be repaired. The car is a delight to drive and both my wife and I love using it. In 2010 I obtained on Trade Me from a chap in Lower Hutt the original Automobile Association Road Test Report that was carried out in England in May 1965. The final Summary read:“Although now somewhat dated in performance and body design the Morris Oxford VI is still well able to satisfy many a family man. At reasonable cost the owner is repaid with a solid, dependable car, generous in interior and boot space and economical on petrol. Performance is unimpressive, but once on the move the Oxford will cruise smoothly and quietly in the upper 60’s without sign of stress. Clutch pedal effort is high and the front seat squabs are rather upright. A cylinder block core plug blew out on the car halfway through the test period. Fortunately no damage resulted, but such an incident could lead to expensive repairs. It was felt, however, that this was the fault peculiar to the model submitted to us, and one which would not formally be encountered on production models�. Wairarapa 50th Anniversary Rally 13 & 14 October 2018 By Dave Williams
Spent the week getting the Plymouth ready. Greasing steering & suspension checking all fluids, clean car (waste of time as usual). Set off for Masterton over the Pahiatua track in worsening weather arriving in Masterton just before dark to our accommodation. Very cold and wet with a very warm motel unit. Saturday morning saw us drive our Plymouth through to the start point at the clubrooms at the A & P Showgrounds, at Clareville near Carterton. Very large contingent of entries (we were No 86). We were feed a huge morning tea, then had our rally briefing. We had chosen to do the long touring route of 140 miles at an average speed of 40mph. Our start time 10.21am - we started 3 minutes late. There were several routes that converged and left and also travelled together so you got a look at most entrants cars in action. In some places there was quite a bit of slower traffic to cut through but early on the roads were fairly straight and multiple passing manoeuvres were needed to keep our average speed up. The weather continued to worsen during the morning with strong winds, heavy rain and very cold with some sleet. We drove North under the Tararua’s toward Carrington. Then back to SH 2 toward Masterton and turning off to the left just North of the Waingawa river bridge skirting around South and West of Masterton. Continued North to come out at SH 2 near Opaki. Turning off very soon afterward to the right toward Mauriceville. Right to Dreyera Rock road then onto Alfredton turning left on to Alfredton Road to Eketahuna and our lunch stop at the community hall. We filled the car park with cars and the street as well - 1 hour for lunch. .The ordered lunches were very large and delicious apparently. Crossed SH2 going out the western side of Eketahuna following Nireaha Road and then turning south to eventually cross SH2 to Opaki Kaiparoro Road. Eventually turning left into Dreyers Rock Road. Right into Whangeahu Valley Road SH52. Right into Te Ore Ore Bidford Road. Right into Castlepoint Road then left at Watson Road. Our next roads took us under the eastern hills till it was time to turn toward Carterton again. Clubrooms and afternoon tea then back to motel to change for dinner. Dinner was really nice which was followed by speeches and prize giving. There were some Manawatu prize winners. Up at 7am Sunday to clean the Plymouth and wash the heavy frost off. Breakfast then off to the car display and gymkhana. There were a number of one make

clubs involved as well as the VCC. The weather was cold but nice at 7am, but by 10.30am was miserable and wet again. The gymkhana was a lot of fun and a lot of cars were involved . We left to visit friends about 1.30pm then headed for home about 4.30pm in cold windy weather with some showers. Those taking part from Manawatu were. Charter Parade
by 1st Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment Will be held in Woodville on Saturday 8 December 2018 commencing at 10.00 a.m. Members of the Manawatu Branch of the Vintage Car Club are invited to the Charter Parade commencing at 10.00 a.m. and that will be followed by the Annual Woodville Christmas Parade which commences at 11.30 a.m. from theWoodville Recreation Grounds. The Branch is able to enter the community section of the competition which carries prize money of $250.00 (1st) - $150 (2nd) & $100 (3rd). 3 or 4 decorated vehicles - entered as a group under the club name at 10.45 a.m would be lovely, and could be rewarding. The parade finishes at Fountain Square in time for the arrival of the 400 entries from the Lions Coast to Coast motor cycle run at midday. There are stalls with a wide range of goods and all the activities for children in the square are free. This will be a unique day out for all members of the family so come and soak up the atmosphere.
