Notes from the Chair Greetings fellow members, Bryan Abraham has been very busy preparing runs for us to enjoy. Our next rally is the Night Trial on the 17 June. Please come along even if it is in your modern. Everyone is very welcome. For June club night we will be viewing some slides of early days in the VCC in this area. Saturday 27 of August is “Vintage Car Club National Day” where every branch will be involved in a fundraising / publicity event which will start at the same time nationwide. Each branch will decide the format of the day with an emphasis on fun and involving non-members as well as members. Funds raised will go to the Cancer Society. Allan Gillies of aPlus Out of School Limited is organising a day for children which revolves around cars. He is looking for display cars for 1 to 1 ½ hours on the 10th of July. The ABC of the Manawatu VCC L is for Lagonda Owned by Dr Jurriaan De Groot and Michele Cooke The Abbott four-seater tourer body Lagonda Rapier I own was delivered new from Staines to The Central Garage, 4 Town Hall Square, Bradford, and registered on 23 May 1934, with Yorkshire registration KY72O2, in the name of the Garage. The car carries Chassis No. D10725, and was originally fitted with Engine No. D2476.
Lagonda Rapier KY72O2 The Garage, which was the Yorkshire distributor for Lagonda, used it for some time as a demonstrator, and as such it must have had a hard life. Early in June 1934, the Garage secured pages of free publicity in The Yorkshire Observer by taking a reporter around all the famous trials hills in this car in one afternoon, covering some 160 miles across the moors, and storming up Park Rash, Sutton Bank, and all the others, “with contemptuous ease”. It has also been rumoured that the Garage produced its own sales brochure featuring KY72O2, although none appears to have survived. According to Lagonda Club historian Arnold Davey, Central Garage, under “Mac” McCalman, had a special gift for selling cars to rich Yorkshire wool merchants, frequently a new car each year. The dozens of surviving Lagondas with KW or KY registrations all originated from Central Garage. The Tourer

Another reference to this particular car appeared in The Motor of 10 July 1934, showing a photograph of it participating in the MCC Llandudno trial in Wales, driven by Mr HC Hobson of The Central Garage, with the caption: “The Lagonda Rapier, driven by H.C. Hobson, created much interest on the hills, all of which it took comfortably and quickly”. The Garage must have passed the car on to a customer some time during the following year, when the receiver moved in on the Lagonda Company, and Rapier production continued by an independent concern, this time under the Rapier name, and it was policy to always have the latest model available as a demonstrator. What adventures befell KY72O2 over the next 14 years will probably always remain a mystery, but we found her back in a somewhat dilapidated state sitting outside a second-hand dealership in the London “Mews” (presumably the Queen’s Mews, where many car dealerships were located), in 1948, when she was purchased by David Saunders, who had seen it advertised for £195. By then, its original red paint and red leather upholstery were in poor condition, and apart from repainting the coachwork in British Racing Green, she required extensive mechanical work. Mr Saunders, who lived in Barnhurst, Kent, used the car for the next 7 years, taking his wife, young daughter, and a Dachshund pup in the back seat, on holidays around Devon and Cornwall. He also used it to travel to Silverstone, where he was a frequent spectator. Mr Saunders, an engineer, emigrated to New Zealand in 1955, and brought the car with him on the Tamaroa, docking at Wellington on 26 September 1955. A growing family, and a visit from the in-laws, demanded a larger vehicle, thus forcing a sale in 1956. The car was sold to a Mr John Kitt, a pharmacist in Dannevirke, who kept it until 1963. During this time, misfortune struck, when the engine ran its bearings as a result of a ruptured oil filter pipe, and the car had to suffer the indignity of having a Ford 10 motor fitted. The original engine is believed to have found its way to the local rubbish dump, when the receiver moved in on the engineering firm charged with the engine rebuild! The car was then sold to Mr Roy Elwin in 1963, and during his ownership acquired replacement Rapier Engine No. D2512, which was imported from England, having been sourced from LV9875, Chassis No. D10752, a crashed Abbott tourer, which had found its way to a scrap yard in 1963. The engine was reassembled with a replacement head and new camshafts, and the original Abbott body, which showed some minor cracks in the aluminium panelling, covered in vinyl to give the appearance of a fabric-covered body. From 1971 on, the car carried NZ Registration No. FY5370. Mr Elwin rallied the car for many years, and maintained membership of the UK Rapier Register off and

on, until selling the car to our friend Garry Price in 2002. Mr Price re-registered the vehicle as KY72O2, on a New Zealand personalised number plate to match the original UK registration, using the correct colour and letter type. We were fortunate to purchase the car in June 2003. With the car in such an original condition we have resisted the temptation to over-restore. Since then, we have embarked on a “rolling mechanical rebuild” aimed at bringing her to a technically reliable condition for rallying. This included a full engine rebuild and the magneto, carburettors, radiator, speedometer, and front springs were overhauled, and new rear hubs were sourced from England. Despite the assurance that “what a bunch of Poms put together 75 years ago, one Kiwi can fix today”, this adage proved to be untrue on this occasion as after seven failed attempts at having the ENV-75 pre-select gear-box repaired locally we saw no option but to ship it to the Midlands in the UK for a full overhaul by an expert, then re-import it into New Zealand. As far as possible, everything has been kept to standard specifications. Throughout all this, we were supported by the most excellent spares service provided by the Rapier Register in the UK. Needless to say, this ongoing quest for reliability has not been without a few challenges along the way, as witnessed by a few trips home on the back of a breakdown truck en route to or from the Art Deco event. The 1960s vinyl upholstery has been replaced with red leather by Basil Shailer who also fitted new carpets and tonneau cover. A new front valance was expertly crafted by Graham Pond, who also repainted the bonnet. The rear springs are awaiting replacement with a set purchased during a visit to the UK. Otherwise, we intend to keep her in her current state, thus preserving the wonderful patina of a car with such an interesting history. Recently, we had the pleasure of being paid a visit by Club members visiting from the UK who were touring here as part of a Bentley/Lagonda contingent, en route to Napier. We got as far as this line up in front of our garage, as……… you guessed it……….we forgot to have something overhauled, this time the fuel pump! I had a personal interview with the late Mr David Saunders, then aged 86, at his home in Marton on 27 July 2003. In September that year, it gave us great pleasure to reunite him and his wife Pam with the car for the first time in 47 years and to take him for a drive in it. As I was obviously still somewhat unfamiliar with my new purchase, Mr Saunders kept advising me from his position in the passenger seat: “You must use the revs, young man!” Dr Jurriaan de Groot

VCC ID CARDS RENEWAL APPLICATIONS Message from Head Office NZVCC
Please note that all VCC ID Cards have an expiry. This expiry is upon change of ownership, or 10 years from the issue date. Your vehicle must also be as described on the Card. A Renewal form personalised for each vehicle ID Card is distributed by the National Office to current financial members, approximately 3 months before the expiration. Even if your vehicle has had no changes, this form must be checked, signed and forwarded to your Branch, along with the ID Card (if the photo correctly shows your vehicle in its present state), or three new photos, as stated on the form. Upon receipt at the National Office, the ID Card will be reissued and will be valid for a further 10 years unless there is a change of ownership or major changes to the vehicle during that time. It is compulsory for all National and International VCC Rallies that vehicles entered must have a current valid ID Card.

MID MONTH MEANDER TO A PRIVATE HOLDEN COLLECTION – 23rd April 2017 It was an easy run to Rongotea – flat roads and a couple of dozen plus people keenly motoring along in perfect weather to view a private collection of some 30 odd Holden Commodores. The collection included V6’s, straight 6’s and V8’s - all in a mixture of both cars and utes and included examples of all the models that have ever come to New Zealand except for one. Only a very At Chesters small number of the vehicles in the collection are not in running order.
The local pub were told some days earlier that we would be dropping by later that afternoon for teas and coffees but must have forgotten as on the day they didn’t have any milk on hand so the dairy across the road gained with a sudden rush of ice-cream sales. Photos Robert Wilson and Bryan Abraham SUNDAY RUN TO ASHHURST DOMAIN – 30th April 2017 For the second Sunday Run in a row the weather was threatening rain so the ‘wet day’ picnic option was again used. The cars left the Chesters Plumbing carpark and took a fairly direct route to Ashhurst – this time out Railway Road, down Roberts Line, into Stoney Creek Road then Hendersons Line, onto Grove Road and Harrisons Line and on to the Ashhurst Domain. Even though it didn’t rain it was decided to use the sheltered picnic area for lunch. And once lunch was over the group decided to burn off some calories and went for a walk out of the Domain and along the main road to the river to check out the recent erosion damage. Still full of energy after that excursion it was decided to then take a walk to have a look at the Ashhurst Domain Wetlands. All in all the thirteen people who decided to partake in the last ‘summer’ picnic for the season had a very pleasant afternoon. Bryan and Catherine Abraham MID MONTH MEANDER TO HANSENS CAFÉ AND STORE – 18th May 2017 The seemingly recent tradition of holding a short run to a lunch spot on a wet day was not broken with this run to a country café for lunch. Sixteen people ventured out to brave the rain and followed the 25 mile route from the Feilding railway station, out through Reid Line, Makino Road, McKays Line, Beaconsfield Valley Road and others – to end at Hansens Café and Store in Kimbolton for lunch. Two others members went directly to the venue arriving shortly after the main group. The owners had set up a couple of large tables for us to settle in at and they handled the orders from the group very well, with all of the main meal orders arriving fairly much together. For over two hours the groups at the two tables sat and ate and chatted before

heading outside to find that umbrellas were not needed to reach their cars and that the return home would be in much improved weather. A big thank you to all who came out on such a lousy day to support this midweek run - which was arranged to try something a bit different. Because of the support for this one, there will be more mid-month meanders to a lunch venue from time to time. Bryan and Catherine Abraham SUNDAY RUN - 25 June 2017 Meet at the Chesters Plumbing and Bathroom carpark in Tremaine Avenue (Palm Nth) at 1.00pm for a run to a small country café. The run is on fairly easy roads (i.e. not too hilly) but please note that the café does not have EFTPOS. The total mileage for the afternoon (i.e. including back to Palm Nth) will be approx. 55 miles.

Photos Bryan Abraham and Stan Garmonsway (Wellington Branch) While it was disappointing to have only 18 entrants (7 from other branches) those that started had a great run. Bryan gave us our instructions and told us not to follow the car in front, as, it turned out, he had created different sets of instructions for the three different classes of entrants. He also handed out a sheet of photographs of various features which we were to identify along the way. We noted that they were in no particular order! We started off finding these reasonably easily, then they got steadily harder and harder, a great way to keep us on our toes. We travelled through Hiwinui, Ashhurst, and over the Saddle Road to the back of Woodville, following instructions that were very easy to follow. Obviously Bryan didn’t want

An Epic Saga of Fortuitous Coincidences (FC’s) and Jolly Happenings (JH’s).
Saturday May 6th and all was well with the world. Ann & I had a great day in our Mercury Cougar taking part in another Bryan Abraham masterpiece: the Post Vintage Rally. I must admit we were more than a little late for lunch at Carnival Park Pahiatua. This came about after we stopped to assist a couple change a flat tyre at the eastern end of Saddle Road. Was this a portent of things to come? Maybe. And, the difficulty was that this couple were Chinese with less than a minimal grasp of English, and wishing to proceed to Carterton via the Manawatu Gorge which was closed due to a slip blocking the road. Naturally, their GPS told them that was the right route to take. Fortunately, another vehicle stopped, and as luck would have it, the driver announced he was heading for Carterton himself, and said “follow me”. We may still have been there had he not turned up! We eventually arrived at lunch stop Carnival Park after much meandering around delightful rural roads in the vicinity of both Woodville and Pahiatua. After a quick bite to eat and the rally presentations, it was off to the Bridge Café at Ballance for afternoon coffee. Hang about – we just had lunch! All the same, once there, their hot chocolate was wonderful, and the company of other rally entrants more so. After an uneventful trip home via the Saddle Road once more, we parked the car up and breathed a sigh of relief that no problems had been encountered. Now to the saga …………….. Two days later, upon opening the garage door, the Mercury has a fairly decent lean to it. Oh no!! a dead flat left rear tyre, the first flat in years. Like falling off your bike, you never forget the basics, and changing a wheel is child’s play. Especially with no translations to attend to as well. Having found a nice piece of wire protruding from the rubber, it was off to have this mended. The next morning, Tuesday, I went and picked up the now re-inflated tyre and replaced it on the vehicle in its allotted position. All good so far. Now the fun really starts. Having replaced the wheel, I walked around the car and discovered to my horror that the other rear wheel had thrown its wheel cover (or hub cap for those whose cars come from the other side of the Atlantic). And these covers are not just your normal garden variety. Oh no, cleverly designed to look like wire wheels without the cost. But now, almost 50 years later, they are extremely hard to come by. In seven years of keeping a watch on eBay, I have only ever seen them come up twice. And even more to the point the plastic inserts are nigh on impossible to obtain. And expensive. ones for my vehicle were only made for a few years so are quite rare. I was gutted. These covers are so so difficult to remove, I find it hard to comprehend how it came off in the first place. So, what now? Do we go and retrace the rally route in the hope of spotting it on the side of the road? Seems like a hopeless chance. Okay, see if we can narrow down where the loss may have occurred. We took a couple of photos of the car at the lunch stop, so inspect those to see if the cover was present then. Yeah, right. Both pictures showed the correct side of the car, but missed the rear wheel, so no further advanced. I know, I’ll phone the Bridge Café, maybe it was picked up on their driveway. No, forget it, that’s highly unlikely. That’s FC #1. Thirty minutes later, damn it, I will call them. The phone was answered by a lady and a lot of noise in the background. I asked if she was busy, sounds like it, and she said no, I’m in the café having just come down from the office upstairs this minute. FC #2. I explained my loss, and she said no, nothing has been handed in, but she would enquire from the ground staff and let me know. Three minutes later, she called back. “You’ve found it” I said. “No, but when I was talking to you, I was standing near one of our regulars”. FC#3. After she had hung up, the regular customer asked what all that was about. When she explained my loss, He said “I’ve just seen that on Facebook’!! FC #4. So they were able to supply me with the finder’s name, and a few minutes later, after consulting the Woodville White Pages online, I was speaking with Wendy. She was as excited as I was!! She and her husband were driving home to Woodville and she spotted this object on the roadside. Yelled at hubby to turn around and pick it up. She realised that it was not some plastic Japanese article but something of quality from Ford you see. A friend, Chevrolet owner, pronounced that it was maybe from a Jaguar (Cougar? Fairly close). So lovely Wendy placed it on the Woodville Community News page on Facebook hoping to find the owner. God bless her. Two days later, we met in Palmerston North, and she handed over the trim to be reunited with a very delighted owner. A truly Jolly Happening. The world is full of very very nice people. NIGHT TRIAL – 17 June 2017 Join your fellow club members for an approx. 55 mile (90 km) night trial on easy sealed roads. The night trial concludes at the White Horse Inn, Longburn with a 7.30 pm roast pork meal and dessert of apple crumble with ice cream and cream. Meet at the Manawatu Branch VCC clubrooms any time after 4.00 pm for a hot drink and a biscuit or two before the 4.30 pm briefing. The first car will be away at 4.45 pm. • • • • •
For those who enjoy a challenge the night trial will be competitive. For those who do not wish to be competitive just come along and enjoy the run. There are no unsealed roads on this night trial. The night trial route passes 2 public conveniences. Bring a torch.
