Notes from the Chair Greetings fellow members, We had an entertaining evening at last Club Night with photos and video from Goodwood Revival. Thank you to Stan Garmonsway for putting this together for us. REMINDER: AUGUST CLUB NIGHT WILL BE HELD IN DANNEVIRKE.. It is our annual combined meeting with Central Hawkes Bay. We are meeting at the Services and Citizens Club in Queen St. To get there take the left hand road at the Y junction at the southern boundary of Dannevirke. We start with a meal at 6pm which costs $22.00 per head, followed by a speaker whom Bruce Poole of CHB branch has arranged. FOR CATERING PURPOSES PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY AUGUST 12TH IF YOU ARE ATTENDING. The new carpet has finally been laid in the clubrooms and looks very smart. We continue to receive bookings by outside groups so the main hall
continues to be used even during winter. Each month, on the first of the month, the Club Rooms are open for Sunday Teas. Thanks to Len Haycock for helping arrange these get-togethers. Please consider coming along. Club Captain Bryan Abraham continues to produce interesting runs. Please consider coming along to enjoy them. At the July Committee Meeting it was decided not to participate in the Daffodil Day celebrations this year, but the Branch will give a donation to the Cancer Society. VINTAGE RALLY - 16 September 2017 The Manawatu Branch VCC clubrooms will be open from 8.45 am to allow you and your crew to meet other rally participants and indulge in a hot drink and a biscuit or two before the 9.15 am briefing. As has been the case in recent years, the Vintage Rally will again be open to vehicles from VCC classification groups other than ‘Vintage’ - however vehicles from other classifications will be ‘non-competitive’ entries. Members who have only a veteran classification vehicle, or whose ‘vintage’ is currently off the road are more than welcome to participate in their ‘modern’ as a non-competitive entry if they wish. The morning section of the rally is approx. 75 miles (120 Kms) and is competitive for those who like a challenge – otherwise just follow the instructions and enjoy the scenery. The afternoon section is approx. 30 miles (45 Kms) and concludes at a nearby café. From the café there is approx. 15 miles (25 kms) of sealed road to return to Palmerston North. As with last year’s Vintage Rally, the route remains on the western side of the ranges so roads are relatively flat. There is only approx. ¾ mile (1.2 kms) of unsealed road on this rally. Bring your own picnic lunch, hot water, chairs etc., to help you settle in for an enjoyable lunch stop. If the weather is against us there is shelter at the destination. Entry Form Options : •

The ABC of the Manawatu VCC N is for 1926 Nash 420 Standard 6 Four Door Phaeton Owned by Maurice and Christine Entwisle
By Esmee Rowden In the 1980’s Maurice realised he needed a hobby as a distraction from the pressures of farming. They were farming near Beaconsfield and in 1982 a friend suggested he looked at the bits of a Nash that had been residing in a chook house for a number of years. On inspection, they discovered that nearly all the parts were there, so bought them and trailered them home. This was in 1982. Another wise friend of Maurice’s told him that he would have to be patient as the restoration was a big job. He was – 15 years later the project was complete! The Nash arrived in Auckland in November A friend Mona test driving the newly arrived shell. 1928 (it is probably a 1929 model), and was owned for 33 years by a Mr D R Wilson in Epsom. In 1968 it was purchased by a Mr P E Hosking from Palmerston North. In the early ‘70s Barry Hoffman acquired the car and dismantled it, and then it went to Mrs L A Williams who stored the parts before the Entwisles bought it. Although the vehicle originated in USA it was Nevan Bott working on the body assembled in New Zealand with the body complete, and upholstery done in the American style with velour, and would have been assembled in Wellington. When Maurice began the restoration the woodwork was rotten and/or full of borer, the roof wood work was missing, the upholstery was in tatters, and there was a lot of rust in the doors, over the fuel tank and in the two side panels. The panel work on the body was mostly done by Nevan Bott from Bulls. Nevan had previously rear view prior to painting worked at Southwards and had worked on the Gullwing Mercedes among other projects. The engine was original – Maurice was the first to have work done on it – B & H did the mechanical work, and Chris Pocock did the trimming. Maurice embarked on a steep learning curve to be able to paint it himself, as well as learning how to do the woodgraining. He had some advice from Don Haynes, and someone else suggest he used a feather to apply the water based tempura paint (with a dash of stale beer – apparently any brand was OK). No chooks lost feathers. One of the Nash’s most notable outings was in 1999, when the Manawatu Branch hosted a Pomeroy Shield trial at Manfeild. Maurice told Steve Bright that if he entered, he would also; so Steve entered in his 1939 Chevvie truck, and Maurice entered the Nash. The four pages of information sent to entrants includes headings such as Marking System; The Tests A Standing Quarter Mile Sprint; a Flying Quarter mile sprint; the Wiggle Woggle; Braking test and High Speed Reliability Trial where “each car will be set a target number of laps of the circuit to drive in a twenty minute period, in two groups, competitors will attempt to achieve their target number of laps. This target will be given to competitors at Scrutineering”. There were also Flag Signals to learn, Supplementary Penalties, Scrutineering and Supplementary Rules. No wonder then that the event was attended by competitors from throughout New Zealand most of whom were intensely competitive. There was a team from Christchurch with high expectations, Bentleys, Rolls Royces, a variety of vintage racing vehicles, a highly competitive MG sedan from Hawkes Bay and many other makes, models, years represented. In the end, Steve was placed 1st or 2nd in the PV class and Maurice was 5th in the Vintage class. When I asked Maurice about any mishaps all he could come up with was getting

a puncture ONCE. That’s not worth mentioning! What he most likes about the car is it relative uniqueness – there used to be one other of the same model (but with wooden wheels) at Horopito, but that has since been purchased by a film studio in Wellington. The purchase of this Nash gave him the hobby he was looking for; a hobby which has continued to engage and interest him for the last 35 years. The Nash shares its spacious accommodation with a 1935 Chevrolet, which arrived after the Nash, but was completed before the Nash, and a 1930 Chev Coupe. This 30’s Coupe is one of only 64 made –it arrived in NZ as a rolling chassis with the engine; its body from scuttle to boot was made in New Zealand by Munt Cotterell Neilsen in Petone. Once again, Ian and I felt privileged to talk with another talented, capable, dedicated vintage motorist – our Branch is well endowed with such people.

VCC ID CARDS RENEWAL APPLICATIONS Message from Head Office NZVCC
Please note that all VCC ID Cards have an expiry. This expiry is upon change of ownership, or 10 years from the issue date. Your vehicle must also be as described on the Card. A Renewal form personalised for each vehicle ID Card is distributed by the National Office to current financial members, approximately 3 months before the expiration. Even if your vehicle has had no changes, this form must be checked, signed and forwarded to your Branch, along with the ID Card (if the photo correctly shows your vehicle in its present state), or three new photos, as stated on the form. Upon receipt at the National Office, the ID Card will be reissued and will be valid for a further 10 years unless there is a change of ownership or major changes to the vehicle during that time. It is compulsory for all National and International VCC Rallies that vehicles entered must have a current valid ID Card.

SUNDAY RUN TO THE COUNTY FAYRE CAFÉ - POHANGINA – 25 June 2017 An overcast day saw 17 people join the Sunday Run and motor along Rongotea Road, down Green Road to Awahuri, around the north of Feilding, through Colyton, and along Valley Road to the County Fayre Café in Pohangina. Nine club cars parked up in Finnis Road outside the Café catching the eye of locals and customers alike while our group seated themselves around the old Pohangina County Council horseshoe shaped table to enjoy an afternoon tea of scones with jam and cream, coffee and tea. Thanks to all those who came on the run. Bryan and Catherine Abraham MID MONTH MEANDER TO HAMCO INDUSTRIES – 09 July 2017 Although rain was forecast the afternoon stayed dry, but the weather was never going to deter the nineteen people who took the short run from the meeting place at Chesters Plumbing, along Lockwood Road to Kopane, and then Green Road to Hamco Industries. The hour and a half at Hamco with the owner – Craig Hambling – seemed to fly, with him talking wheels, rims and spokes to very attentive and curious members – discussing aspects of the building, truing, repair, painting, anodising and lining (i.e. the full restoration) The Tourer

of car and motorcycle spoked wheels, but also talking about some motorcycle restoration projects that he had in hand. And after discussion was exhausted in his ‘wheel building and repair’ workshop, Craig took us to a larger shed/workshop where he talked about his (and his family’s) interest in Midget Cars - where engines and several midget cars and other examples of the sport were on display together with a family collection of vehicle, motor cycle and midget car related memorabilia. After leaving Hamco most of the group headed to Feilding where we managed to get to the Coffee on the Square Café just before closing time and had a forty minute afternoon tea before heading away. Once again, many thanks to all those who supported the run, and as one of the advertisers in our ‘Tourer’, hopefully members will support Hamco if they have any wire wheels needing repair – whether it be for a pram, pushchair, bicycle, motorcycle or car – vintage, classic or modern. Bryan and Catherine Abraham MID MONTH MEANDER – Wednesday 9 August 2017 The August Mid-Month Meander is a 30 mile (45 km) run to the Vines Café in Foxton for lunch. Meet at the railway station end of the Matthews Ave cul-de-sac (Palmerston North) at 11.00 am. While the Vines Café does not have sandwiches, filled bread rolls and savouries, there are toasted sandwiches ; burgers ; soup and chowder ; salads ; eggs (Benedict, Montreal, fried or scrambled) ; bacon and egg breakfast ; paninis ; nachos ; wedges, etc. (check out the Café menu on the internet : www. thevinescafe.co.nz ). Don’t forget that if for any reason it is not convenient for you to use your club eligible vehicle on any of the branch events you are more than welcome to join in driving your ‘modern’.

SUNDAY RUN - 20 August 2017 Meet at 1.00 pm at the Chesters Plumbing and Bathroom carpark in Tremaine Ave, Palm North for a 35 mile (55 km) drive to a café. There are two 5.5 km sections of Highway driving (SH56 & SH57) on this run and the same again if you return to Palmerston North by the same route – or an even greater distance on a State Highway if you choose to take a more direct route home. Feel free to bring your modern if you wish.
Editor’s European snaps We were cruising along the Saone river, and stopped at Port sur Saone for a couple of nights. There was an expo on just across the river which had a number of items of interest including Us arriving at Fontenoy le Chateau. a repairer of brass musical instruments. He had completed a 6 year qualification. There were also several post war cars on display. Elsewhere there was a gathering of about 15 vintage cars, mostly post war. Highlight for Esmee was a Ford Escort of the kind we honeymooned in. There was also a tatty Morgan. and a Porche and a tractor. Post cruising on the canals of France we spent a couple of weeks in Portugal. Lisbon had a Coach Museum containing the Royal coach collection which The Tourer

displayed 68 horse drawn coaches, about ½ being processional coaches, and the other ½ being examples of different types. Do you know the difference between a coach and a Berlin? Or Brougham, Phaeton, Victoria …..?
