I think that a big shout out is well in order for Pete and Rex for the way they stepped in and took over the running of the Feilding trip on Sunday the 12th of August. The trip was an excellent success and was thoroughly enjoyed by around 50 participants. Vern Jensen’s wooden wheels and his descriptions on the manufacture of them was amazing. Then Mike Marshall’s car collection and shed excellence. Followed by the meal at the Irish Pub which allowed every one heaps of time for a catch up and chat. Then the day finished with the visit to the Coach House Museum which was well worth going to. All this with warm sunny weather included, made for a great day. Next it is great to see that Bev and Pete Kelly are still helping out with the library. They have been very busy helping and teaching Pauline the way to do things. Especially the filing of the archives and all the recent photos donated by the Disher Family. Without their help I think that Pauline would have given up by now, so thanks Pete and Bev please keep it up. The show and shine for Daffodil Day was a wonderful success with over 80 vehicles on display and around $1,100 raised for the Cancer Society, a great club effort and another enjoyable day. Club night was well attended with over 60 people present. Despite the problems setting the computer up which made the start of the meeting late it all went well. Our speaker Kevin Bailey from Ovation Meat Works gave a wonderful and enlightening presentation, many thanks to Colin Geange for arranging and organising Kevin to visit us. The problems with the computer are operator errors! Put quite simply, we are only learning to set the system up. Our speaker for next month’s meeting is Derek Haycock and his subject is on car exhaust fed fuel pumps that he has developed for older cars. Also Dennis Milne speaking on his Austin castings. Speakers for October 2018 Derek Haycock and Dennis Milne from Manawatu Branch. Derek will speak about the exhaust fed fuel pressure pumps that he has designed and makes for veteran cars. Dennis will talk on the intricately detailed Austin mascot castings he has been having made. Both spoke to Manawatu Branch recently with members saying their presentations were exceptionally informative and enlightening.

Sunday 16 September Gather at the club rooms at 9am and we’ll travel down together. Or you may wish to make your own way there. We’re booked in at 11am for a guided tour. The cost is $5 each or $3 for oldies! Bring your own lunch and depending on the weather we may park up for a picnic in Ngati Toa Domain off Pascoe Avenue in Mana. There is a lovely park and view of the harbour. If the weather isn’t favourable we will review it on the day.
Our October monthly run is to Southward Car Museum and their Café. Meet at the club rooms at 9am or be at the museum for a 10am start. We will have lunch in the café. You could bring a cut lunch to be taken outside in the grounds if you like.

Feilding trip was very good with a good turnout of cars. Daffodil Day show and shine had approximately 80 cars and $1,100 was collected for cancer. 5 cars went to Summerset Village to take the residents for a ride. Michael Gaffaney gave a summary of what was covered at the VCC AGM held in Napier. SPEAKER: Kevin Daly gave us a presentation on the workings of a meat process company, which was enjoyed by all. AGM OF NZ VINTAGE CAR CLUB HELD IN NAPIER 4 AUGUST 2018 I attended as the delegate of the Horowhenua Branch and report as follows. There were two Notices of Motion voted on. The first Motion was lost the second was passed. Both related to the 30 year age eligibility of vehicles and sought to remove the possibility of misinterpretation. The accounts were passed and the annual subscription was increased by $5 for members and $1 for joint members to $55 and $10 respectively. This is at the lower end of the scale for subscriptions to a national organisation. The accounts show that revenue from subscriptions declined from the previous year. Branch subscriptions are in addition and vary between branches. Some delegates queried the need to raise Subscriptions when there was over a million dollars in reserve, but over $300,000 of this relates to an insurance payout in respect of the Christchurch building. The building is still occupied and has to be strengthened by 2032. Easter Rally There was just one bid for the South Island rally in 2019 and one bid for the North Island rally in 2020. Will gauge the level of support before making a decision on one Easter rally for NZ. Discussion on providing a medal for 60 year award. Meeting supported the suggestion. First Rally for Vintage cars possibly being held in 2019 if a branch could be found. 2021 Festival of Motoring to be held in New Plymouth from Sunday 17 February to Friday 22 February. Is a festival of motoring rather than a rally. Will be relaxed motoring in your own time. Venue is based on the Racecourse adjacent to Pukekura park. Want 10% of members attending ie 800 otherwise you question the merit of holding such an event. Draft Constitution circulated so branches that need to update their Constitution can do so. Is not compulsory but Branch constitutions can not be in conflict with National Constitution. At present any change needs Executive Committee approval. Meeting approved a change to having a Secretary/Treasurer approval. The Management Committee who are unpaid volunteers run the club on a day to day basis but the Executive Committee sets the rules and direction. Don Muller the VCC Archivist gave a presentation on what material the archives contain. Is looking for copies of the Automobile Association forerunner to the ‘Motor World’ magazine the ‘NZ Motoring and Cycle Journal’. Don is at Archives on a Friday. Would like to have names of experts on particular makes/models. Branch secretaries should have an online copy of what is held in Archives. The Vehicle Technical Committee has a busy role. Roger White is now the Chairperson. VCC identity cards are issued free to members with a $100 charge for non members. 1000 cards have been issued to non members. In the last 12 months some 400 new VIC cards have been issued with another 400 renewals. This creates a lot of work and is essential that the form is filled out correctly and completely. Download a form from the website to make sure you have the latest edition. Also note the correct photo size. Only around half of the Horowhenua Branch vehicles
have a VIC. With moves to restrain the use of older vehicles happening it would seem prudent for all your vehicles to have a VIC. We are the only organisation issuing VIC’s’. There were no nominations for the J L Goddard Trophy. Applications for badges ie 25, 35 year etc have been causing problems. You must use the same name as was used on your original application form. Do not use a present day nickname or your current married name if you have remarried since the time the original application was made. There were 316/50 year badges presented last year and 26/60 year badges. A few members have asked for their details and the vehicles they own to be suppressed. In taking photos of such people or their cars for publishing in Branch magazines you need to seek their permission. In the UK the law is that membership lists cannot contain addresses and other contact details. Australia has banned all types of Asbestos from 2017, both import and export. So need to be very careful about taking a vintage car to Australia to participate in a rally event. Could be impounded and even stopped from exporting back. Rod Brayshaw talked of the disruption to the car industry occurring with advent of electric cars. In the USA average car use is for 20% of the time. The present car fleet of some 247 million is expected to drop to just 44 million by 2030. Valet parking services dropped 20% in last 12 months with the presence of Uber. In France you can drive Historic vehicles except during pollution peaks. Oxford in the UK is planning to ban vehicles in the city. Our MOT expects EV uptake to skyrocket. The VCC is planning to set up a committee to monitor the world situation re threats to motor vehicle use and formulate a strategy to deal with authorities. We need to negotiate a better definition of Historic vehicles and for free fuel choice. A Code of Conduct draft is being circulated for a response in time for the March 2019 Executive Meeting. Reply required by 1 October. Is about what the majority of members feel is unacceptable behaviour. The power to expel is with the Executive Committee. A presentation by Ross Holden, the Communications Manager talked of the 35 Branch newsletters that are now online and there are many overseas readers. Photos improve readership. Now have a Facebook page, which is not a buy, sell, swap page. Aim to post one photo each day and would like suitable photos to keep interest in the page growing. Like the National Daffodil Day this is all about raising the profile of the VCC. The rules re the definition of Historic Vehicle has been shifted from the technical code to the By Laws. The term ‘appropriate condition’ has replaced ‘historically correct’. The 2019 AGM will be in Greymouth from 16/19 August. The 2019 Executive Meeting in March will be in Wellington at the Miramar Golf Club adjacent to Wellington Airport. Michael Gaffaney 6 August 2018

If you were at club night in June you would have listened to a Volunteer Fireman from the local brigade outlining their project to get the 1952 appliance back on the road. This was a former machine used by the brigade in the 50’s. The Fire Engine had over heated and seized some time back and had just been left in the shed for a lengthy number of years. We were asked if we could provide some advice on a way forward to get it rolling again. Tom Hayes, Don McLaren and I followed up this request and hopefully handed out some useful advice. It’s a great project that I am sure the branch will get behind. Parts have already said, any parts required that we are holding are available free of charge.
Having lived in Ohau for 45 years, it is amazing what you don’t know when it comes to what’s there! I have seen the area grow from farm land to houses, the trees that are now in place of bare land and the main road traffic increase tenfold. However just a month or two ago a house came up for sale. I knew vaguely the owner who had lived there for some time was connected to aircraft engineering during his working life. What I did not know was at the house there were many parts and almost complete aircraft from the 50’s and 60’s on the very large section. It transpires that the sprightly gentleman now in his eighties was looking for a change, had decided to sell up and do something new. As an aircraft engineer he has acquired and rebuilt many aircraft after insurance claims and the ones that were left over were a source of valuable parts. So us car buffs are not the only ones that hoard!

Everyone enjoyed a grand old time at the feilding outing. Well all except one member! A member with a soft and gentle disposition was extremely alarmed and left a nervous and quivering wreck! Invited to ride along, noticed near the end of the drive that the members car they travelled in was showing an expired registration label. When pointing this out was told by the owner that the car was fully legal and didn’t expire until the following month. Upon closer inspection it turns out the owner wasn’t entirely sure which year it was let alone the month! Tail between his legs the driver wandered away muttering under his breath and glancing about looking for Traffic Cops. The run finished and all returned home safely and without incident. However, silly owner of the car then had to confess to our member still quivering in their shoes that the car didn’t have a current Warrant of Fitness either! This had expired God only knows when! Our gentle member is seeking counselling! Funny thing was, the car only recently received the Restoration of the Year Award too……

My Memories of Warren I first met Warren through my membership of the Vintage Car Club. When he was nominated for Chairman, Warren rang me and said he would only accept if I was prepared to take on the deputy position. His thoughts were that he would take care of the southern part of the area and I would look after small tasks in the northern part. From that time our friendship grew. I attended several AGM’s and Management Meetings with him. He was always tuned into what was going on and had a clear understanding of the ways of achieving the desired result. He had the ability to clearly articulate his thoughts. He always showed great interest towards anyone he was talking to and had a big smile when teased about the benefits of cars other than Fords. Warren was very proud of his 1936 Ford Cabriolet. He took the car to Dave Locke when it was due for restoration. After the body was removed and paint stripped, he realised this was going to be a major task. With the expertise and supervision of Dave others were soon engaged for their specialist skills. Richard Barnes doing the panel work, Richard Morse handling the painting, Basil Shailer taking care of upholstery and Steve Roberts was the chrome expert. A fantastic restoration was achieved. Warren’s passing will leave a gap in our meetings and more particularly our club. His funeral service had brilliant speakers, telling us of a life well lived with many great achievements. How many people could say they had sold a new car to a traffic cop while the cop was giving them a speeding ticket. This man had personality! I left his funeral service, not feeling so much sadness but thinking how lucky I have been to have met and known such a kind person.

1924 AUSTIN TOURER Just a brief story on the Austin we have just sold on Sandy’s behalf. Sandy Lawn was a member of Horowhenua from 1989 to 2007, until her interests in cycling took her overseas. The car is a 1924 Austin 12/4 Tourer. Alistair Pain from the Winemaker’s Daughter in Te Horo bought the Austin in 1964. When he married, he used the tourer as his honeymoon car. The upholstery needed a ‘help and a tidy up’ so he cleaned it and rejuvenated it with blue nugget! His new bride was not pleased with his efforts when the blue polish transferred to her honeymoon clothes! Sandy and Ross Lawn bought the Austin from Alistair in 1989 and named her ‘Florence’. This was a reference to Sandy being a nurse. Sandy retained Florence after she and Ross parted company. She started to restore her, with help from Dave Munn, Peter Nightingale and Ray Boswell. When Sandy sold her house in Levin, she asked Peter and me if she could leave Florence in our shed for the next 6 weeks while she looked for a house in Nelson. Nine years later.... Sandy phoned to say “sell Florence“, SO WE DID! Florence was bought by Mike Marshall of Manawatu Branch, living in Feilding, in August. He plans to have her up and running so that he can attend the Irishman’s Creek Rally next year. Florence is well suited to tackle the Irishman given her pedigree as an early car built for these conditions. Sandy plans to move back to Australia and continue cycling around the world.
What a smashing start to the day, brilliant sunshine and a steady run from the club rooms to Vern Jenson's place at Feilding. Vern is a Master Craftsman at building wooden wheels, he held the audience of 43 members spellbound as he told the story of how a proper wheel is made! I can vouch for the quality as I collected four of them for my Model T. They look stunning and will set the car off a treat. We spent a good hour at Vern's and I loved every minute of it, I’m sure everyone felt the same! Thanks Vern and family for having us. Next stop was Mike Marshall's garage and workshop, what a place! What I call a super mans shed, plenty of room for his fleet of cars and motor cycles along with restoration projects. Another great visit, thank you Mike for allowing us a good look around. Third stop was for lunch, at Murray's Irish Bar. An excellent pub lunch, although it did take a little time in arriving. No problem, the Guinness was on hand and it was great, thank you to all the staff who looked after us. Our final stop was at The Coach House Museum, another nice place although a bit chilly for a few of us. The place is packed with old and interesting artifacts and I could have spent much longer there but we were running out of time and our members departed for home. Thank you to all forty three members who turned up, you all made it a great success, here's to the next one. Cheers.

Manawatu Vintage and Classic Motorcycle Club Show Report

At the end of July, the Manawatu Vintage and Classic Motorcycle Club had a motorcycle show to help raise funds for the Aorangi Hospice. There were over 200 motorcycles on display, along with Burt Munro’s original World’s Fastest Indian. It was transported from Invercargill. It was a show well worth attending! A diary note for all Horowhenua motorcycle members, the above club will be having their annual motorcycle Swap Meet at the Manawatu club rooms on the 11th November from 8am.

Things have been quiet as a mouse in the library. Pauline has continued her good work with the archives, completing the Disher photos. After seeing the mass of books which arrived during Kelly times, I am concerned that at some time an avalanche will topple into my lap. I have requested that a form of heating is made available for the library. The copier is working as it should with Winton and I making up membership packs. With regard to the donations of Beaded Wheels and Spark these are appreciated as copies are included in the packs.
Where in the world, will our newsletter, the Horowhenua Branch Spark, pop-up next? A few weeks ago I noticed that the write up from Spares Department from the June edition, regarding the Englishman and his shipping container had started to make waves in the United Kingdom! It was in one of their many motoring pages, via the internet, interesting. Anyhow as reported in last month’s report, Spares has been quietly working on installing a machine to remove tyres from rims. As of the last working bee, we are now up and running. A big thank you must go to Peter Nightingale for working though the trailer load of Ford Model A parts at the last working bee. Peter tells me there were quite a few treasures on the trailer. Unfortunately I couldn’t make the VCC National Day (The Daffodil Rally for Cancer) this year, as I was showing a small group of Bay of Plenty members around some private collections of early motorcycle’s in the Lower North Island. In original condition. The chrome has some surface rust. This bike is a runner and ready for reregistration. Needs only a new battery and fresh fuel. These bikes featured overhead camshafts and electric start (although only six volts). They have excellent performance for their day. 3569 of this year model were produced. This bike would be the perfect restoration or could be used in its original patina. Included is a spare C92 mostly complete bike - in parts. Also included, is a 1959 C95 rolling frame, tank and seat, with the engine. There were only 700 of this year model produced, which will make this bike quite rare, worldwide. Most of the components for these three bikes are interchangeable. So it is possible to keep the C92 as a survivor and rebuild the C95. Wednesday 26 September 2018 Visit to Biggins Hill Historic Aircraft Centre, RNZAF Ohakea Come and view a Spitfire PV270, a Grumman Avenger and other historic planes. Check out the website www.spitfirepv270.co.nz 9.30am Meet at Hyde Park Village Café, Te Horo, for morning tea. Hyde Park Village is approximately 5kms north of the end of the Expressway and the Village and Café are on the left off State Highway one. 11.45am Meet for lunch at Viv’s Kitchen, Sanson. It is located on the right of State Highway one and 500 metres along after turning left at the Sanson Intersection towards Bulls. 1.00 to 1.15pm Depart for Ohakea Airbase. The museum is free but we would like to charge $1.00 per head to pay for a gift for Brendon Deere who will show us around the hangar.
