This will be my final Chairman’s Chat, after five years at the helm. I hope you will all support Des St Clare in his new role, so the Club can continue moving forward. This month’s run to Murrayfield saw 38 members and 20 cars arrive at the venue, some wearing the new Club Banners on their windscreens. Very smart! A good meal was enjoyed by all, with lots of social chat. It was good to see Warren and Lorraine Birch joining us. The Wanganui excursion at Queen’s Birthday Weekend was attended by eleven cars and 20 members from the Branch. We didn’t win any prizes, only Mike Khull won a raffle! A great time was had by all! Two days after returning, it was our AGM. It was good to see a good turnout for this, including Warren Birch. All positions were filled, except for Club Captains. If you think you could do this job, please contact Bob Barton. It was a special night for Bev and Peter Kelly, who were retiring from the Library. The Club presented them with a framed drawing of their Jeep truck, with an inscription from the Club acknowledging their hard work over nine years in creating our Library. The drawing was done by Doug Curtis, who was present to see them receive it. Doug and his little dog “Hayley” are well known to our Club, and are much respected by Bev and Peter. Unfortunately I had to announce at the AGM that our member and friend Bill Shattky had passed away earlier in the week. Bill had suffered a stroke before Christmas, and had not recovered from it. A private cremation has been held for Bill. It was great to see a good number again at the Saturday Working Bee. We met a prospective new member, Angela Biggs, who arrived in her immaculate 1955 De Soto car. She left with a New Member’s Pack, so hopefully we will see more of her. We are looking forward to our mid-winter lunch on Sunday 24th June at the Club Rooms. Our National President, Diane Quarrie, will present three 50 Year Service badges, and one Sixty Year Certificate at the lunch, which is now fully booked. See you there! I have enjoyed my time as your Chairman over the past five years, and wish Des all the best for his term in office. I might be gone, but will still be around!

Horowhenua Branch Chairman’s Report 2017/18 When I took on this position in June 2013, I had no idea that it would last for five years! Where has that time gone? I have enjoyed my time in the Chair, and there have been many high points over the years. One was when Colin Geange was appointed as Treasurer. He turned out to be a real asset, working tirelessly for the Club in so many ways, as did our Secretary, Michael Gaffaney. We all worked well together. In 2014 a major decision was made to cost out and look for finance for an extension to our Spares Department. We had just been granted enough to purchase a defibrillator through Pub Charity, so hoped we were on a roll! A bit later we found out we had been granted only $2000 toward the extension. As this was not quite enough, we asked the Club how to go about raising the substantial sum still needed. Dave Hobbs generously gave us a new “Trayla” and cage to raffle. Other members and one supermarket donated minor prizes to go alongside. Colin Geange did a marvellous job at co-ordinating the raffle, and we raised enough to almost fund the extension with the money we had already set aside. Finally in March 2016 we got the Building Consent to start, after a frustrating battle for our builder Jeff Fox between Council and Engineers. In th March 2017 at our 20 Annual Swap Meet day, the extension was finally opened! In August 2015 Mike Khull was awarded the coveted “Goddard Trophy” at the National AGM in Dunedin. Mark Gibson had written the citation without Mike knowing, so it was a complete surprise to Mike! Warren Birch, Mark Gibson and I were there to see him receive the award. A proud moment! th
18 February 2017 was the Grand Opening of the Mackays to Peka Peka Expressway. We were allocated 40 vehicles to take part in the opening parade. Thanks to Mark Gibson for making this happen. Members from Manawatu and Wellington Clubs joined with us. th
We celebrated our 40 Anniversary Dinner at the Club Rooms in June 2017. National President Diane Quarrie and husband Geoff were in attendance. Two 50 Year Service badges were presented, to Richard Caldwell and Ian Bade. 76 members attended. It was great to see Shona and Peter Nightingale, Tom Hayes, Alton Harrison and Warwick Doreen present, all foundation members of the Branch. We have lost some of our hard-working members during the last five years. Graham Strode-Penny, Tony Wallace, Ferg and Pam Crawshaw, Les Heath, Margaret Ransom, and Shona Nightingale. They are all sadly missed. At our last AGM, Jackie Job took over from Colin Geange as Treasurer, and Des St Clare became Vice Chairman. Michael Gaffaney stood down as Secretary. A month later Winton Cleal stepped up to be our new Secretary. We have been on some good runs this year, with our Tararua Trundle, the Shannon Car Show, and an outstanding one to the Mangahao Dams and Power Station. We were joined by members from Wellington Branch on this run. Also the Ted Green Motorcycle run had more entries than last year, which is good to see.

Our 21 Annual Swap Meet was another successful day. I have to thank all of the organisers and helpers. Without everyone’s input it would not be the success that it has become over the years. It just seems to go from strength to strength. Long may it continue, as it is our main source of income to run the Club and Club Rooms. Thanks to Pete Collins for co-ordinating the day. I have appreciated a wonderful amount of support from my fellow committee members over the last five years. Without them I couldn’t function. I have been very fortunate to have such a great team, and even when some have retired they have been replaced with people equally as good at their jobs so it has been a seamless change. There have been many out of committee who have helped as well, in so many ways. I really appreciate Julia in her gardening capacity, Wayne Thrower mowing the grass, Andrew Judd our very able Custodian and “everything” man, our very able VIC team, and so many others who come along to almost every Working Bee on a Saturday morning and just help out wherever needed. This is wonderful, and I appreciate your efforts. Please keep on coming and doing, and supporting your new Chairman! The Club is in a very good position moving forward, of which I am very proud. I know we are the envy of a lot of other Branches with our lovely Club Rooms set in such a great situation. We couldn’t ask for anything better! I must thank Winton Cleal for standing in as Branch Delegate for Warren Birch this year, while Warren has been ill. He has done a great job, thanks Winton! I know there are a few positions being re-organised at this AGM, and I wish all of you who are stepping into these rolls all the best for the foreseeable future. Our Librarians Bev and Pete Kelly are stepping down after nine years of hard slog setting up our magnificent Library. What a wonderful job they have done, a real credit to themselves and to our Club. Once again we are the envy of most Branches for our Library. I wish the new Librarians all the best in their new roles. The Spares Team under Callum Farmer are a force to be reckoned with! Thanks Callum for all of your hard work behind the scenes that nobody ever knows about. Without your expertise on Trade Me and contacts around the country, and even the world, we wouldn’t make half of the income out of Spares if not for you. Your efforts are much appreciated! Our Club Captains have worked their butts off over the last couple of years to please us with some interesting runs, plus running our different events. There is so much time and effort goes into this, I know, so thank you so very much. Also to Linda Barton, who has been running the kitchen at the Swap Meet and other events for the last two or three years. What would we do without your cheery face behind the counter! Even the “Spark” delivery has to be mentioned. Most of you wouldn’t realise how much effort goes into this. Those that are not posted are hand-delivered. Not an easy task, and takes a lot of time and effort! Thanks to all involved. You know who you are! Last, but by no means least, I must give a huge thank you to Mark Gibson for producing our magazine. It is a thoroughly professional production, with great attention to detail. Without your dedication Mark, we certainly would not be as well informed as to what is
coming up or going on in the Club. You also have kept me on my toes on more than one occasion! Finally, I must thank my wife Cheryl for her complete support. Well the AGM is over and the club now moves into another year. As I have only been a club member for around 3 years, I would like to take this opportunity to let everyone know a little of my back ground and try to explain how I came to accept the position as chairman. I grew up in Makara, Wellington on a farm and left school at 15 years of age to be a shepherd. I followed this profession for around 8 years working in Makara, Tinui, Alfredton and Rotorua where I got married and then shifted back to Wellington where I worked as a tanker driver for Shell Oil Co. My next venture was starting a central heating business, when diesel oil fuel was the in thing and diesel was only 17 cents a gallon! Then the economy changed and the price of diesel sky rocketed, so I bought into a spray painting business. During this period I was racing stock cars and became a committee member of the Wellington Stock Car Club and then graduated to the President of the club and spent many years in that position. Just over 4 years ago Pauline and I decided to down size our property in Makara and we shifted to our present home in Otaki. We then went to an AP&I show in Levin where we met Bob who was looking after the clubs cars which were on display there. Bob invited us to the next club meeting and Pauline and I were overwhelmed with the friendliness and welcome that we received and how well that meeting was run, so we joined the club. Last year Colin asked me if I would stand for Vice President, something that I had never considered. However after some persuasion and Colin stating that he would be in his position for the next 12 months, I agreed after all 12 months is a long time. Now I am thinking where did those 12 months go? It seems like it was only yesterday and now here I am the President of your club. Any way I am overwhelmed and thank all who have had the confidence in me and given me their support. I will chair the club to the best of my ability, but am relying on you the members to help and guide me. Please don't hesitate to contact me if something is not happening or being executed as you think it should be. We have a great club, committee, facility and outlook, but must all work together to keep it as it is. Looking forward I need your help in finding speakers for club nights, the subject isn't important as long as it is interesting, so if you know of anyone or you yourself can help please let us know. If you are not confident in speaking we can always find someone to assist you. Finally I would like to thank Winton’s wife Ruth for her assistance, the AGM as well as all the other persons who dedicate so much effort and time into the running of the club, especially the women who do so much behind the scenes. Seeking any keen Power Cyclists Paul Furkert, a Wairarapa VCC member, has recently re-commissioned a power cycle (Paul’s is a 1936 BSA bicycle driven by a 1951 Trojan Mini Motor (via a friction drive onto the rear wheel)). This machine has a top speed of around 20mph, so isn’t really suitable for going on standard VCC rallies. Paul is looking to get in touch with other owners of power cycles who might be interested in a Power Cycle Rally. The idea is to all meet up at a county pub/campground somewhere in the North Island one weekend next summer, and do some short (and slow) explorations of the local area on our machines. Owners of other slow bikes (e.g. mopeds or veteran/vintage motorbikes with top speeds of less than 30mph) would also be most welcome. If you have a suitable machine, and would be interested in such a weekend away, please get in touch with Paul (email paul.furkert@xtra.co.nz or phone (06) 3795355 or text 020 40273746). If there is sufficient interest from cycle/bike owners, the finer details of the rally will be worked out in consultation with all potential participants.
Bill Shattky 1926 – 2018
Bill was born in Hastings and was educated there. On his first day of school the Napier Earthquake struck on 2nd February 1931. I remember Bill telling me about his experiences that day while at the Art Deco Rally in Napier in 2005. A year later was the 75th Anniversary of that occasion, but Bill being Bill, would not push his barrow and tell the authorities he had been there! That’s the kind of man he was. He came to Upper Hutt in the 1950’s and began his working life in an engineering apprenticeship, working for five years at the Wellington Patent Slip. He also worked with the Marine Department and had a twelve month stint at Lighthouse maintenance. Most of his working life was in management of engineering and associated manufacture with an electrical bias. I was told by an extremely good friend of his that he manufactured one of the first electric blankets in his workshop! He was not just a pretty face. Bill’s pride and joy was his 1928 Austin Open Road Tourer, which he purchased from a deceased estate in Ekatahuna in 1967. Bill’s father had owned an Austin 12/4 and had instilled in Bill that you don’t buy an Austin – you invest in an Austin, for they are built to last! Consequently, Bill tackled the job of restoring his car, known as “Doris,” after his aunt, by taking a three year
course of night classes organised by the VCC in Wellington. The 16/6 engine was in poor condition so a 12/4 engine was transplanted into her. This engine lasted for some years, until further surgery was performed, which again I learned about just this week when he “stole” the 16/6 motor from his son’s truck and put it into “Doris.” His son couldn’t make out why his truck wouldn’t start! Bill and his wife Pattricia moved from Upper Hutt to Waikanae in the 1980’s, transferring his Vintage Car Club membership from Wellington to Horowhenua. They were both very interested in genealogy and enjoyed researching Bill’s paternal grandfather. The culmination of this was a trip to Germany and what is now Poland. Combining Austin motoring and family research on nostalgic journeys has to be a great way to spend time, which they did in the South Island after the VCC AGM in 2001 in Timaru, at the Pleasant Point Railway and later in St Bathans, where a Scottish ancestor lived and worked as a blacksmith in the early 1900’s. Here is Bill’s account of the Cook Strait crossing by the Lynx on their homeward journey from the South Island with Alan and Mary Buick … “I have experienced rough seas on conventional ships and I have experienced earthquakes, but never before have I experienced the two together. A most unusual combination which brought shelves down and stock down in the shop and even dislodged ceiling tiles, to say nothing of the number of passengers it upset. I didn’t let on to Mary but I guessed it was a distinct possibility the boat would have to turn back because it was getting pretty stroppy out in Cook Strait and apparently the catamarans don’t have a great tolerance of rough weather. We were very pleased it didn’t turn back because if it had I think we might have had another AGM … an Awfully Green Mary!” Bill received his 50 Year Service Badge of the Vintage Car Club in November of 2014. He had a wicked sense of humour, and will be remembered with great affection by many in the Vintage Car Club movement. For all that, he was always a perfect gentleman. May he rest in peace now, with his beloved Pattricia.

He added he will try to always “blind-copy” his messages. Don McLaren introduced himself as the new librarian. He will computerise all the records and would appreciate help doing this. Bob Barton thanked all the members who supported the recent run to Murrayfield and reminded them of events coming up. The meeting closed at 8.15 pm.
Hi members, Sunday 20th found us at our club rooms gathered for the lunch run to Murrayfield Cafe. This is the third Murrayfield run for Bob and I. We first thought it up as a way to get the ladies more involved and a pleasant lunchtime outing. Now I think it is pretty much an annual fixture! It’s dead easy for us to organise! We had 38 members turn out, with 15 cars. There was a fine club car line-up, especially with the new club sashes displayed. A great idea Des. The Cafe turned on its usual good food and at a reasonable price too! No wonder they get busy! Good to see all our members socialising. A special welcome for new members Rob and Ali Law and Bruce and Raewyn Lawrie, we hope to see you at many future outings! A super welcome back for Warren and Lorraine Birch. Great to see you Warren! Rumour has it, you are making a big comeback! You can’t keep a good man down it seems! Thanks and great to see you all there.

To the best of my knowledge and recollection, the big sedan is a Hudson which was owned by member Reg Austin. He was a retired military fellow who was very tall and walked with a stiff leg. This was the reason he had a large car. He drove it like a racer and lived in the south area possibly Paraparaumu. The Jaguar I think belonged to Alistair Jones. The registration is AA212. I don‟t think that has been seen for a long while. He was an ex chairman and foundation member of the branch. Of course longer serving members will recall Ray Disher‟s 1929 Chrysler 77 Roadster. The purpose for the day was a visit from Palmerston North members. The Lone Buick is Lachy Scott‟s. The Singer and big Austin, I can‟t be sure about. Perhaps one of our readers could help with more information. It would be appreciated.
Another one of my shed visits! Basil and Bev Gowenlock moved to Levin in 2015, having purchased a property at Ohau some seven years prior to retirement. Basil had worked in Upper Hutt painting and panel beating. The property was part of a local dairy farm, previously owned by a well known local family which had then been subdivided. It has plenty of room for Basilâ€&#x;s hobbies and talents. All of which he can pursue in retirement. As a vintage enthusiast and motorbike collector, he and Bev are also keeping chickens, various nut trees and many other fruit trees. Both are kept very busy. I caught up with him and checked out what he was up to! The first thing I was to notice was a huge gum tree that had been felled beside the shed. He told me it had to go, it was going rotten and if it fell it would flatten the shed and all the contents. Then we walked around the section and looked at all the Chestnut trees and citrus etcetera. This in itself is a job on its own! Then on entering the workshop, I realised at the very least, I should sweep the floor of mine! His is very tidy with everything in its correct place. The tour was started in a separate room at the back where on the walls were Cuckoo clocks and high up on a shelf valuable car and motorbike parts from the past. My eye caught sight of a magnificent model steam engine! I was told that this was made by Basilâ€&#x;s father, he made it on his Myford Ml7 lathe which Basil still has. It is a working model of a mill motor and is fitted with a reversing lever. When moved open and shut, steam valves redirect the steam flow. (Stevensonâ€&#x;s reversible link motion valve gear)
In the corner is his pride and joy, the 350 1927 L27 BSA motorcycle fully restored by him from a complete wreck! When purchased it required many bits which had to be made from scratch. Fitted with an acetylene headlight, it looks great! Out to the workshop and here are more motorbikes! First up, is an unrestored BSA L22. Basil tells me, a lady called him asking him to value it as her husband had passed away some years before. Her son didn‟t want it, so she had made the decision that it was for sale. He reluctantly resisted the temptation to buy it, as he was sure the reception at home might be a little hostile! So instead, advised what he considered to be the local price and provided a much higher estimate should it be advertised on eBay. The lady asked, “are you interested?” He replied that he better not. When he arrived home, he was greeted with “where‟s the bike?” Hurriedly he rang back to say he was interested. The lady and her son were quite happy to take the local price as it was more than they expected and they knew it was going to a good home. So Basil gained another project! The bike has an oiling system that requires a degree of accuracy in setting. Too much oil pumped in results in smoking, too little and the engine will lock up! Normally six drips per minute and a bit extra on a hill via the auxiliary hand operated pump is about right. Then, he has a unique 1942 BSA 500cc model M20, that was used during WWII in Burma. It was imported into this country in the 1990‟s. Over the years he has collected all the panniers and signaling gear that was used during the war. He has additional bikes, an A65, one he is repairing, it fell over on the Ted Green and also parts he is painting for a 1936 Empire Star, which is being restored for a client. There is another 500cc B33 that he has just finished for another client.
Further into the workshop is the Essex and a very rare Honda S600 Roadster from 1965. Basil found and purchased it, using it as a shopping basket! Then later deciding it was really for vintage motoring. A new soft top has been found and purchased in the USA. It currently awaits fitting in the near future. Yet another eye opener as to what a member is up to!

MID-WINTER ‘BIG DAY OUT’ – 23rd June 2018 There are three club activities to look forward to on Saturday 23rd June. Hopefully you can join in on all three, but if not just choose the one or the two that you are able to participate in and take the opportunity to have an enjoyable day out with fellow club members. All three events are at / leave from and return to the Manawatu Branch VCC clubrooms (The Grove) 684 Kelvin Grove Road, Palmerston North. Mid-Winter Wander – The first event of the day is an easy afternoon run to a country Café for afternoon tea. If you are wishing to give your Vintage Car an airing and you are not feeling up to the 1½ > 1¾ hour Night Trial then this „Wander‟ is definitely for you. The format of this outing is based on the end of month outings and is an approx. 45 mile (70 km) run on easy sealed roads to a café – then an approx. 25 mile (45 km) run back to the clubrooms / Palmerston North. Meet at the clubrooms for a 1.00 pm briefing. Just turn up on the day (there is no entry form, no entry fee or prior notification of attendance required). Mid-Winter Christmas Dinner – The catered meal which was prepared by Creative Catering for the Branch Christmas Party in December was very much enjoyed by those who participated. As a result a Mid-Winter Christmas Dinner - again with Creative Catering preparing a catered meal, has been arranged for Saturday 23rd June. -
The venue is the Manawatu Branch VCC clubrooms and the meal will be served at 5.00 pm.

Night Trial – The last event for the day is the Night Trial. The total distance for the night trial is approx. 47 miles (75 kms) – of which approx. 7 miles (11 kms) is on unsealed roads. The unsealed roads are of a good surface and are suitable for a „modern‟ car if you prefer to not tackle the night trial in your vintage. The briefing for night trial will commence at approx. 6.45 pm - after the Mid-Winter Dinner, and the short rally can be either competitive or not for those who participate in their vintage vehicle. It will be a non-competitive entry for „moderns‟. There will be no photographic clues on this rally nor is there any straight line navigation and the instructions will be easy to follow. But this is a night trial so don‟t overlook bringing a torch – especially if you are intending to be competitive.

SUNDAY RUN – 17th June 2018 A week earlier than usual, but with our ‘Big Day Out’ the following week this Sunday Run will spread the club outings over two weekends and let you sleep in after the three events on the 23rd June. Meet at 1.00 pm at the Chesters Plumbing and Bathroom carpark in Tremaine Ave, Palmerston North for an approx 40 mile (65 km) drive to a Café.

Well…… to be fair, the reality is, the ‘club’ thanks you! We have the best VCC library you’ll see anywhere in the country! It is pristine in its presentation, with an excitingly diverse collection compiled on a single subject, vintage motoring. To have consciously collated material with the vision it will become historical and utilised in the future for the benefit of the club, shows foresight and sound thinking. The dedication shown over nine years is exceptional and truly worthy of the recognition given at the AGM. We thank you!
With the AGM just around the corner things are normally quiet, but not this month. Over the course of the last few weeks it has come to our attention that we had, an international dealer from the United Kingdom in the Country. He made the mistake of ringing our Secretary, the Monday before Mothers Day and over a 20 minute conversation let slip many details, which Winton quickly phoned through to me. We know that he had flown into New Zealand ahead of the Ashburton Swap Meet and was filling a shipping container with pre World War II English car parts and on the hunt for Lucas parts from the same period. At the time of ringing he was staying with friends in Dannevirke, he said he would be back in October. I can report that I did speak to this chap on the Thursday night, after two days of missing his calls. HE DID NOT GET INTO HOROWHENUA SPARES! However this raises the point, if we the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand sell these parts now, which are already starting to become hard to find. Then in a few years time, members will end up buying them back from overseas. This makes no sense! Safe travelling everyone!
