I would like to thank all the members and partners who joined us for the Club’s 40 th Anniversary luncheon on the 25 June. It was a very full Clubrooms, with 76 people present! However, it all went off very well, with a well-organised catering staff serving us a lovely meal. We were privileged to have our National President, Diane Quarrie, and her husband Geoff with us, making it a special occasion. President Diane and our Patron Tom Hayes did the honours in cutting the Anniversary cake. Diane also presented two of our members with their 50 Year Service Badges, Richard Caldwell and Ian Bade. Congratulations to them both! As an added bonus, both recipients brought their bikes to be displayed in the Clubrooms on the day. A big thank-you to our Club Captains, Bob and John, and to all the helpers who set up the room for the luncheon and cleaned up the next day. A special thanks to our member, Bernard Scott, who collected photos of cars in various places and times to create our special placemats for the occasion. These made for a great talking-point, with members trying to find their own vehicles. Well done, and thank you, Bernard! Also thanks to Mark Gibson for risking life and limb up the ladder, taking the group photographs. This was after a bit of a mission in placing around 40 cars in the right place in the slippery conditions. I must also mention the generous gift of two drawings to mark our Anniversary from Doug Curtis. His wonderful works can be seen hanging on our Library wall. On a sad note, I have to record the passing of Margaret Ransom. Margaret was a great supporter and worker for the Club over many years. Our thoughts are with her husband, Derek, at this sad time. This month I would like to welcome new members Bill Laney and Denise Liddle, and Jovan Snowden to the Club. I hope you enjoy your time with us. I also have pleasure in welcoming our new Secretary, Winton Cleal, to the committee. It is very hard to function without a Secretary, so thank you Winton for stepping into the breach! Once again there was a good turnout for our Working Bee this month, with 18 members joining us for morning tea. It was great to see so many of you there. th
Don’t forget our next Club run, the famous “Night Owl” on Sunday 16 commencing at 7 pm at the Clubrooms. I can smell those fish and chips already! Hope to see you all there!

After a short illness, Margaret passed away peacefully at home on 23 June. Margaret had been very much involved with our car club over many years, helping out in various areas. Her particular expertise was in the catering side of things, so it was no surprise when she volunteered to run the kitchen on swap meet days and other occasions. When building our new Clubrooms, Margaret was involved with the setout of the kitchen, which has worked well for ourselves and caterers alike. For many years Margaret delivered the monthly Club magazine, “Spark.” Margaret has helped with the Ted Green Motor Cycle Rallies over the years, supporting Derek who is a keen motorcyclist. Margaret really enjoyed driving her 1936 V8 Coupe on rallies and Club outings. She will be sadly missed by the friends she made within the Club. ________________________________________________________________ The most recent newsletter of the NZ Federation of Motoring Clubs is available as of 8 July 2017. MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE HOROWHENUA BRANCH VINTAGE CAR CLUB NZ INC HELD AT 14 TIRO TIRO ROAD, LEVIN ON 5 TH JULY 2017 AT 7.30PM PRESENT: Chairman Colin Brooks welcomed 50 members. There was a minute’s silence for Margaret Ransom who passed away recently. VISITORS: Tom Bognuda, Murray Doreen, and new members Bill Laney, Denise Liddle and Jovan Snowden. APOLOGIES: Win and Joan Bishop, Barry Walker, Ada and Elvery Hunt, Peter Nightingale. MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING: Taken as read and Approved Winton Cleal / Warren Birch. CORRESPONDENCE: Winton reported that the HBVCC would like to have a look at our spares on 22nd of October. An email was received from Julie in National Office advising that she will be away for approx 3 weeks from the 6 July. There will be limited coverage at National Office. CLUB CAPTAIN: It was a challenge to get 40 cars in for the 40 birthday photo shoot including their drivers and passengers. The food for the lunch was very good with 76 members attending. Thanks to all the members who helped set the club rooms up. They looked very nice. Night Rally on the 16th July with Fish and Chip supper sponsored by Bob and John. On 20th August there will be a trip to Fisherman’s Table for lunch and then to have a look at the oldest garage still operation on the Kapiti Coast. We need 25 th people so we can have our own room. 24 September: Trip to Tui Brewery and a BBQ Lunch. Possible tour of Brewery and sampling of the beer. LIBRARY: Bev reported very good coverage in the local paper regarding the 40th birthday lunch. The Club was presented with two prints (drawings) by Doug Curtis. SPARES: It has been a quiet month with some parts going to the South Island. Callum thanked Mark Morgan for all his help in the spares dept. Mark was presented with a framed poster to hang on his wall. GENERAL BUSINESS: The front parking area is to be extended out in the field. The Branch is going to put in an application to host the 2020 North Island Easter Rally. Pete Collins has booked the AP&I ground and stadium for this. Dave Hobbs spoke about the HBVCC th being based in Levin for 3 nights from Friday 20 October. They are visiting shops, Southwards Museum and the Carl Lutz collection. Branch members are welcome to join them. Dave Hobbs also spoke about the Model A National Easter Rally that was held in the Hawkes Bay. He had to organise a quiz for 300 people. The meeting closed at 9.05 pm.

What a weekend The 40th Anniversary meal was a real challenge to say the least, over 30 vehicles to try and organise for a photo shoot, all parked in inches of mud due to heavy showers during the morning. Mark Gibson soon had it all sorted and we gathered all the members on the decking above the vehicles whilst Mark, balancing on a ladder roped to a trailer, managed to take some photos. The meal was fantastic yet again, the Raewyn team did a marvellous job, they really worked hard to see that we had a good time. Thank you girls, you were great. Thanks also to our National President, Diane Quarrie and her husband Geoff, for coming. They will no doubt already be mentioned in the Chairman’s report. Many, many thanks to my lovely ladies who, as always put themselves out to make sure that everything was perfect on the day, what would I do without you all. Also not forgetting our gents, the knife, fork and spoon specialists, who without their wonderful help the ladies would have finished an hour earlier! WELL DONE GUYS it was a great job on the day. Now on to the next outing THE NIGHT OWL on 16 July at 7pm, start at the clubrooms. Come in any vehicle and have a good run around the Levin area and after enjoy FISH and CHIPS sponsored by yours truly and John. It will be a great evening’s entertainment and one not to be missed. Sunday, 20 August at midday is lunchtime at Fisherman’s Table Restaurant on SH1, and after a visit to the oldest garage in New Zealand at Paekakariki. I NEED NUMBERS PLEASE, URGENTLY FOR PEOPLE ATTENDING, WE NEED A MINIMUM OF 25! So far we have me and John Also yet again, we need numbers for Sunday, 24 September, leaving from the clubrooms at 10am for a trip to the Tui Brewery. There will be a BBQ lunch cooked by the Tui Girls, Pauline, Meryll, Sheryl and Julie. There will be live bands and a guaranteed good time. Cost is $25 for the meal and if you want a tour of the brewery with free tasting it will cost you an extra $20. WE NEED NUMBERS PLEASE - AT LEAST 40 PEOPLE LET US KNOW ASAP - THANK YOU.

A perfect piece of prose from Shona Nightingale, submitted to Beaded Wheels October 1977.
For a relatively new member like myself, the hint of there having been a ‘club vehicle’ raised my interest and subsequent research via Bev Kelly and the Library. My interest aroused from the comments of Shona Nightingale in Beaded Wheels’ first Horowhenua ‘Idle Torque’ segment. As a boy I was in awe of the Thornycroft ex WWII truck parked up in Johnsonville. To think the club previously had a similar vehicle, I set to and located information principally recorded by Tom Hayes. These photographs show the 1927 or 1928 truck as found, semi restored and as it was used for advertising. It was donated to the Horowhenua Branch in 1975 and the view taken by club members at the time was to utilise it for club outings, children’s parties and visits to other branches’ events. Club members contributed significantly to the restoration project, being allocated various tasks through the process. Proceeds to commence the project initially came from the first ever Motor Show run by the branch. The anticipated cost was $1,000. Sadly, on 25 October 1988, some 13 years later, Tom circulated a questionnaire through the club formally seeking members views on which course of action should be taken with the truck. Citing the shelving of the project due to anticipated storage costs, costs in building new mudguards and the expense of the five huge tyres required. As a result the Thornycroft changed hands for $700 and became the property of Gleeson’s Truck Museum in 1989. So another chapter in the truck’s life came to pass. From originally being a Post Office lines vehicle, became a crane truck in 1946 and spent its later working years for Mr Ken Douglas of Levin. His firm used it for logging and associated tasks until retired in 1969. It was parked up in a paddock awaiting the Horowhenua’s interest six years later. Then after incredible efforts to save her, was sold to Mr Gleeson in 1989. A library notation on documentation then records it passing to a Mr Michael Cameron of Taupo in 2015. A challenge for anyone in the know, could they please supply any tidbits of information as to its current state of repair and perhaps a photograph.

SUNDAY RUN – 30 July 2017 For another leisurely Sunday afternoon run on easy roads through our tranquil Manawatu countryside to a café for afternoon tea and a friendly natter. Meet at 1 00 pm at the Chesters Plumbing and Bathroom carpark in Tremaine Avenue (Palmerston North). If the weather is fine (and you have the inclination), there is a small garden walk at the café. To keep your car mats clean you may wish to bring ‘other’ footwear to explore the garden in. Total mileage for the afternoon (including back to Palmerston North) will be approimately 40 miles (65 kms).
At the 40th Dinner, this photograph was reproduced on some placemats. Interestingly the swapping and trading of placemats was brisk, the one bearing this picture, the most sought after! Sincere thanks to the supplier of the original image – your name will never be revealed.

It may be winter but we have been kept very busy in the library, processing the many donations of books, manuals and magazines this month. See the Latest Arrivals list in the library. One book that caught my eye was "Automobile Treasures. Motor Museums of Britain and Europe." Early 20th century but well worth a look. Doug Curtis and his dog "Hayley" have once again given a very generous donation to the library. Many of you saw the two framed sketches, one of a 1928 Hupmobile Century Six, the other a 1929 Delage DMS. Look for them both on display in the library. Doug's many drawings appear in several of your archive scrapbooks, with a suitable comment from Hayley. Check them out next time you are browsing in the library. Didn't we do well on Sunday, 25 June when we celebrated 40 years as a Branch of the VCC. I noticed several members "swapping" the placemats so they could take home the placemat that featured their vehicle. Bernard Scott was once again responsible for producing the excellent souvenirs and has offered to make copies of the photos available to help fill the empty photo frames on the wall in the clubrooms. Thanks Bernard. If you have a more suitable photo of your vehicle at home, let me know. I will also need confirmation of the details of your vehicle too please. The library has a labelling machine now so the librarians are dealing with the photos. We thank Graham Lawton very much for the excellent job he did, framing and labelling your photos in the past. It has been a very quiet winter month so far, with most of the last working bee aimed at cleaning up the clubrooms ahead of the 40th Anniversary Dinner. However, I can report that at the time of writing, the Packard doors and some of the boxes of spark plugs have been sold. The week after the dinner, there was an Automotive Parts and Collectables Auction in Oamaru. A total of 400 lots, every item photographed making it an easy catalogue to follow, thus being able to see what you were chasing, well done North Otago. Safe motoring everyone.
