Well only just over two weeks until Christmas, where has the year gone? It has certainly been busy and we have experienced some wonderful trips and outings. The Tararua Trundle was a great success and an amazing number of hours must have gone into the organising of it. Thanks to John and Bob, who have now gone into a well deserved retirement they have done a wonderful job and deserve to sit back and enjoy a well earned rest. So now Pete and Rex step into the breach as our Club Captains, they have already planned most of next year so we will have some great events. This month’s club night went well and the bring a plate supper was excellent. We had plenty of time to have a good chat amongst ourselves instead of a speaker which was very good. Also we welcomed four new club members, Dianne and Robin Strachman, Chris Winiata and Aaron Burns. Christmas dinner was a huge success with 56 people attending and enjoying the day with a wonderful meal. The weather was hot and sunny with no wind which helped make the day a success. Father Christmas was in attendance and also in great form. He made sure that there was a present for everyone and they also received a small bag of lollies each. Many thanks to Bob and ….the moral of the story is, don’t stand still too long, you’ll John and all the helpers that put so much effort into making turn into a Christmas Tree! the day a huge success. The best restoration was awarded to Gerald and Jill Harvey for their immaculately restored 1930 Ford Model A Roadster. I have been asked to mention that the St Johns Charity Shop is desperate for workers so if you have even one hour of spare time a week that you would like to donate to this wonderful charity, give John White a call. The next club meeting will be on 6 February 2019. Ian Bade’s son Leith who resides in the United States will be in New Zealand on holiday and has offered to give the club a presentation on the navigation systems for self driving cars. This will be a one-off and promises to be a very interesting talk. So put this in your diary to make sure that you don’t miss it. It may be the only chance you get to be brought up to speed on navigation systems. Well that is all from me for 2018 apart from thanking every one for their participation and help and I wish you all A Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Till 2019!

The branch will attend this event on Saturday 2 February 2019. It is held over Saturday and Sunday. This will be the official monthly run for February. Meet at the club rooms, no later than 9.30am on Saturday. We will travel together and enter the property as a club and assemble on the farm in an allocated spot for display. Please note; there is a gate charge – this is their annual fund raiser. See the flyer later in Coming Events. This will be an excellent day out.
Letter to the Editor Upon receiving my November copy of Spark, I almost fell into a deep faint! Contrary to the impression portrayed the only event expected to occur in the near future was a French Model T starting her Kiwi career. With the application of a battery strap and a trembling coil. Monsieur Pierre and Robèrt changed their advance and suddenly the new career was launched. Back to the faint, blue overalls will no longer be worn during any photographic event! Monte Carlo Rally Wellington Anniversary weekend January 2019 The Wellington Branch of the VCC has invited us to take part in their Monte Carlo Rally. They are suggesting an inter-branch competition. Some of you saw my presentation on November club night. What will happen is the organisers will courier to me your entry packs on the Tuesday before we do the rally. I will contact you and ask you to come to our clubrooms so that I can brief you on how the rally works. Basically you will design your own route to Whanganui from one of the designated starting points so that you collect the most points possible on the way. The lunch stop is in Woodville with arrival at midday. For every minute after that you will be docked 5 points. You have to prove that you have been to the various locations on the way and can do this by just taking a photo. One other way is to go into a shop and buy something and get a receipt with the time and date on it. (One chap previously bought 5 ice creams last year!) Depending on the age of your car, you can receive points added to your score. For instance, if you are driving a post-sixty or newer car then you are on scratch points, but if you are driving a vintage, I think you get 25 percent added to your score. The rally ends at 5pm at 151 London Street, Whanganui (a motel) and afterwards there is a BYO barbeque and the winner is announced. The Monte Carlo Rally is great fun so think about giving it ago. On 24 June this year at the Mid Winter Luncheon, Ivan Benge was acknowledged for his 60 years service to the Vintage Car Club. He was presented with a Certificate of Service and an artwork of his well known and loved ’38 Chev Coupe. The VCC Executive has quite correctly instigated the commissioning of a new badge of similar style to the other Service Badges, however this time incorporating ‘60’ into the design. Our popular and well respected member was presented with his newly minted badge by Chairman Des St Clare at the November club night, thus completing the process to the required standard befitting a member of such a milestone with such dedication to our organisation. CONGRATULATIONS!
Robert (Bob) Disher
26 March 1929 – 2 November 2018
Robert (Bob) Disher It is with sadness that we mark the passing of one of our latest 50 Year Service Badge recipients, Bob Disher. Bob was a quiet, unassuming modest person, who flew beneath the radar. He joined the Vintage Car Club in 1967 and was immediately involved in the group that, as early Manawatu Branch members, held their social gatherings in Levin as well as travelling to club meetings in Palmerston North once a month. Bob was very active in his early years in the car club, and was always happy to help with woodwork and give his support to rallies, picnics, and parades. Bob would race around the grounds at our annual picnics in a three-wheel invalid chair steered with a tiller. Bob and his wife Inez had four children: Ray, Barbara, Jenny and Lorraine. The family lived on a block of land in Bartholomew Road, Levin, with large sheds containing lots of spare parts and cars. Bob and his family never missed an event or rally, and were out and about in their cars whenever possible. Bob was a partner in a joinery business in Levin. His son Ray worked with him, Ray being an engineer and Bob a woodworker. Together they made short work of car restorations. Bob also enjoyed taking part in the Irishman’s Rallies in the South Island. As the local membership grew a sub-branch was formed of Manawatu, and eventually in 1977 the Horowhenua Branch came into being. Bob was very active in the formation of this. Local members met in sheds, houses and pubs in the early days. Bob saw a need for a base, and along with his two business partners Peter Blair and Lester Baker, donated a building for the purpose of Club Rooms. The building was cut in half for transport and moved to Gordon Routledge’s mushroom farm on Mcleavey Road, Ohau. About a year later the building was again shifted, this time to the Pari Kawau Domain, Ohau, where it was extensively renovated. Bob attended all the working bees for this task. Tragedy struck the family when son Ray was killed in a vintage event at Tinui in the Wairarapa in 1984 at the age of 31. When our present Club Rooms were completed in 2007, Bob generously donated the contents of his large sheds to our Spares Department. This was the catalyst which gave the club such a great start in this area. To thank him and his family, Bob was asked to unveil a plaque naming the area “Disher Family Spares” in conjunction with the presentation of his 50 Year Service Badge in June this year. It was our honour and privilege to have the Disher family present to witness this special occasion in our club rooms. The family has also gifted to the club a collection of old photographs depicting the early years of the branch. These are available to be seen in our Library. Farewell Bob. You have left a legacy in our Spares and club rooms for us all to enjoy for many years to come.
Keith Lawrence Staples Keith was born in Otaki in 1956 and attended Manakau School. He grew up on his grandparents' farm on the old section of State Highway One, at the top of Forest Lakes Hill, where they ran cattle and sheep. It was while attending Otaki College at age 14 that he bought his first motorcycle - a 1948 Matchless, that he called "Fat Black". There are stories of him hooning around the area and neighbours complaining about the noise! While at college, he also had an Austin A35. Keith attended university where he gained a diploma in horticulture, and while there, played basketball. His other sporting interests were hockey and harriers. His working life was mainly centered around horticulture, however his first job after leaving college was as a drainage surveyor in Wellington. After university, he then became a horticulture consultant for MAF in Wanganui, as it was while in this area, he met Susan. After a 4 year period including going to England, they married in New Plymouth in 1985. He ended up being transferred to the Horticulture Research Centre in Kimberley Road, Levin. He had managed to procure 21 acres of the old family farm at Manakau and he gradually established kiwifruit blocks, and raised cattle there. In 1989, Aaron was born, and after a few months it was decided that Susan would carry on with teaching, while Keith looked after him, while working the land. This would continue with Hannah (1991) and Brent (1994). He still found the time to tinker around with things mechanical and swapped an LE Velocette for a 1954 MSS Velocette. He also at one stage had a Ducati. For Aaron's 4th birthday, he bought him a Suzuki quad (Susan was not impressed!) and so now he is hooked on bikes too! Keith would go on to buy various bikes for the kids (but I think they were really for him!) On the property he had a 1948 International KB3 truck, which he decided to do the body on, so he attended welding and panel beating classes at Horowhenua College for 3 or 4 years. Keith was involved with the AJS / Matchie register and Velocette Club and in 2000 organised the Velocette Rally at Forest Lakes. He attended many runs and rallies, including the Cold Kiwi, and pit-crewed for "Team Velocette" at classic race meetings (for Nick and Robbie Thompson, and for Terry Sanson (trials) ) In 2000 he became caretaker at Te Horo School and then in 2002 caretaker at Ohau School, where he stayed up until he became ill. Over the years he picked up a few more bikes; a 1952 Matchless G80 CS, a 1962 Matchless TCS, a 1961 AJS 18CS. Keith joined the VCC about 9 years ago, although he had been on some previous rides with us. When he could no longer ride, he bought a 1982 Capri. Keith was a very likeable person, very willing to help in any way, on anything. A great father and a great mate to many. Keith was recently trying to think of someone he didn’t like, so that he could give them a Matchless. Such was his sense of humour! We are going to miss him terribly. RIP Keith.

A few weeks ago, I was telephoned by the Porirua Police. It was a little bit of a surprise, and my first thoughts were that I must have been speeding, or broken some law, when I last travelled to Wellington for work! It turned out to be the detective assigned to the robbery calling to inform me that they had found the car!!! Three days later my wife and I went to Seaview, where in secure storage, the BT2 and the remains of the “toy hauler” (converted pop top caravan) had been released from being a crime scene. We were there to positively identify both items, which were then released to the insurance companies – Vero for the BT2 and AMI for the caravan. The BT2 was almost complete but showing much corrosion in many places, and the thieves had not tried to change its appearance in any way. [Quite surprising really, as it still had the decals from its international Formula Junior competition, which have “New Zealand” and my name in large letters. It also still had its VIC sticker on the dash area. The remains of the toy hauler were just that – “Remains”! It had been totally stripped on the outside, and gutted on the inside! Most identifying features had been removed. They had removed the electric winch, dolly wheel, battery and case, spare wheel, mudguards, and all rear lights. Inside, all the caravan fittings were gone, sink bench, gas stove, drawers, fridge (and its support “box/shelf’) storage areas etc etc! The good features that remained were the lowered and widened axle, and the lifting rear tailgate. Even the side door handle and two locks were gone! It was painted a deep “off white” colour by the guy who rebuilt it, but the thieves painted it black with a white roof.
Kerry and I then had to consider what we should do… About three months after the robbery, who most folk (and the insurance companies) said we were unlikely to see either vehicle ever again, we decided that I could try to find a replacement FJ race car. With the insurance money I could not afford to buy a factory car (Brabham, Lotus, Lola etc) as the prices had risen far too high, and my insurance pay out was nowhere near enough to cover the purchase price, let alone shipping and duty etc; as there were no cars for sale in NZ. We ended up buying an Australian built “one off” FJ, which had fallen into dis-use, and shipping it back from Queensland. Thus there were many questions to ponder on… We decided that if we could, we would bring the BT2 home. VERO took a little while, but were most helpful in the end, and we managed to buy back the BT2 for a lower figure than it had been insured for; as it was no longer in the same condition. [It needs a complete rebuild.]
The BT2 back in our driveway For all recovered vehicles, AMI use “Manheim” and simply auction off the recovered remains. After a little more “soul searching” I put a single bid in for what is now a box trailer. The on-line auction system is really fast, and to my surprise I just won it! The remains, box trailer to be, is now awaiting its rebuild. It is going to be a very busy summer! The recovery of both items is a strange tail. Someone saw something unusual, from a distance while out in the hills (tramping or hunting – I do not know). They alerted the
police, who were able to see that something was there on recent mapping photos; so I guess the information was only a compass bearing from a known position. I believe that was the thieves’ mistake, as the white roof of the repainted caravan showed up as a white rectangular shape. It was located up in the hills somewhere in the Hutt Valley, but on the back of a rural property that is not accessible by road, from the front main part of that property. Thus, the Police had to work out how to get there! It was accessible via a track from another road area, not closely connected to the roads that are used to access the front of the property. The police used a SARS vehicle to recover the van and BT2, but had to have strops brought in, as the BT2 was “loose” inside. That would almost suggest that they were not put there at the same time, or the strops used were taken away? Why? Who knows? There are no complete answers, for any parts of this saga. No one has been prosecuted for the robbery, and the land owners could only be “done” for receiving, but say the caravan is not theirs; but they gave permission for it to be towed there. Of course, there was media interest in the recovery. I was contacted for remote interviews for the press and radio, something I’m not accustomed to! It all went reasonably well, but some press releases that stated that the BT2 was a getaway car in the “Great Train Robbery” were obviously written without much thought. The BT2 is obviously a single seat racing car, and Roy James was the #1 getaway driver for the robbers, but they used Mk II Jaguars and Ford Zephyrs as the getaway cars! I was just able to finish the majority of the rebuild on the new FJ, to run at the MG Classic race meeting at Manfield on the 10th and 11th of November. Now I have the “post first run” list of jobs to do! It’s a busy life!!!

Sunday 18 November 2018 Well folks, we got lucky with the weather gods! I watched hail, rain, wind and snow gleefully forecast on the telly, however it all went around us again! We received a few showers in the morning, improving as the day went on. Fifty six trusting souls in twenty six cars turned up. A goodly number, and after a briefing took off with a hiss and a roar at 10am northbound. Now, this was one of our Bob’s longer runs. Like if you see a large body of water on your left, you has gone too far! That’s Lake Taupo! Just joking! However it was a long ‘un, like you may need new tyres, a new WoF on your return and lots of petrol! Bob and I were the AA backup bods, tools, tow rope etc, just waiting for our first breakdown. Sure enough, we got one. Pete Collins phoned with a plaintive ‘Help’. His old Austin’s clutch had decided it had done enough work for today and went into slip mode. We were lucky, caught up with ol’ Pete near the honey factory, but he was able to drive it home. That dealt to, on to Viv’s Kitchen in sunny Sanson for a hearty lunch. Just in time to greet the first and fastest, maybe hungriest? Viv did us well there, so back to base to await the first home, marking pens poised. First and overall winners were Winton and Ruth Cleal. Don McLaren won the new Warren Birch Ford Car Jack Trophy, well done Don and navigator! A big thank you for all who attended, Bob and I are signing off as your Club Captains, on extended duties and looking forward to winning next year’s run as competitors! Thanks.

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run
John Kinvig Lindale, just north of Paraparaumu, was the venue for this month’s mid-week run lunch. Lindale used to be the place to go but now looks and feels like a deserted wild west town, however there is one bright spot, a young Hungarian couple have taken over the restaurant and are producing very good food at reasonable cost, so 32 of us were able to enjoy a very convivial lunch. One dish deserving special mention is the Goulash :- a large bowl filled to the brim with a type of soup with more meat and vegetables than liquid accompanied by a slice bread made on the premises, all for $12. We then travelled a little further North to visit Nick Sparrow at 268, Main Road North, Otaihanga, where Nick has a vapour blasting business. Vapour blasting is an ideal process for cleaning small car parts, [anything up to a small engine block] and Nick gave us a comprehensive explanation as to how the process works and demonstrated on several components that we had brought along. The cost is $90 per hour but he cleaned a mechanical petrol pump for me in about five minutes. The process involves blasting water and minute glass beads at the object and because of the pressure generated, the water vaporises to lubricate the glass beads. The ladies were able to view the extensive gardens while the car buffs vapour blasted. Alison and I are delighted that the mid-week run is going to continue next year in the very safe hands of a mini committee consisting of Hal and Anne O’Rorke, Trevor Barnes and Roderick Kinghorn. We would like to thank all the people who have supported us during the last two years especially those who have opened their homes and others who have come up with ideas on places to visit. A very exciting programme is being planned for you next year but suggestions for visits are still more than welcome.
Armistice Day 2018 Woodville Horowhenua and Whanganui Branch were invited to attend Armistice Day in Woodville to celebrate the occasion along with Manawatu. The Returned Services Association, public, local dignitaries, Military and children assembled in Fountain Square at 10.30am. The moving service commenced then, and culminated at the 11th hour with the release of white Pigeons which circled the Square as if to acknowledge those who fell and whose names are inscribed on the central memorial. VCC attendees were invited to share in a lunch put on by the Woodville Community Association together with the local dignitaries and guests. This was enjoyed with everyone meeting and enjoying the occasion. I was pleased to have met a Sergeant from the attending NZ Army Engineer Corps who also served in the Solomon Islands in the same year as I. Although I hadn’t met him at that time, it was a great chance to share stories from 2005. Members were presented with petrol vouchers as a thank you for making the effort to present our cars within the confines of the ceremony. This was very generous and appreciated.
At the conclusion of lunch, VCC members gathered in the Square again to look over the recent acquisition of Neville Gorrie the Proprietor of the Grand Hotel Whanganui. He had attended in his Veteran Unic Tourer. This is a lovely older restoration in superb condition. The car has spent much of its restored life as an exhibit in a car museum. Subsequently it had never been driven much and suffered a few hiccups in getting to the celebrations. This was the very type of vehicle that served on the Front and behind the scenes during WWI. The history of the car sadly is not yet known. Members retired to Bruce Hutton’s home for a well deserved cup of tea and less formal conversation and a laugh or two. A very enjoyable time was shared and stories exchanged. The very sort of thing that may not have happened should the conclusion of the Great War have been different. The gravity of the occasion not lost on those present. Those wishing to attend, headed south a short distance to Pahiatua to the local picture theatre. Fortunately we had prepaid and reserved seats to the first release of Peter Jackson’s ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ WWI re-coloured documentary. This was narrated by those brave men who were able to recount their experiences and stories, now elderly gentlemen. This was an incredibly moving and enlightening occasion which was peppered with very real scenes of the carnage experienced. This footage had not been seen by the public before and had been requested to be produced by the Imperial War Museum by Weta Workshops. Reserving seats turned out to be crucial as the queue for unallocated seats extended out the front doors and down the street. Many of those people unfortunately had to be turned away. My day commenced at day break where I set off in the ’38 Chev Master 85 sedan from Johnsonville. I enjoyed a traffic free drive along State Highway 2 over the Rimutaka Hill and on up to Woodville. I left Pahiatua via the ‘Track’ stopping at my parent’s briefly in Manakau for a cup of tea and on the road again just as night fell. Arrival at home was well after dark with pitiful headlights. Fuel consumption was, well who cares, I’ve lost count – a great day, a great occasion, well worth the fuel. Loved the day out.

Five members and their cars answered the call for a little Community Service at Winara Care Home in Waikanae. The five attending cars were all thoroughly suitable in their ability to accommodate the residents. The ease of access in and out of each car was appreciated by those receiving a ride and all loved the chance to ride in vehicles they remembered fondly. Thank you to those members giving their time and raising the branch profile.

December Greetings Fellow Vintager's. The library has been ticking over like a Model T or an Austin 7. A bit slow at times but doing its best to achieve a good result. Pauline did request and has received assistance with keeping the Archives current. Thanks for that and please keep the cuttings coming. I received an interesting lesson while sorting through donated books. The stack divided itself into thirds, one third keepers and the other two into the overcrowded for sale section. With the number of books already on the shelves it doesn't seem possible that we are able keep collecting. However please don't let that slow down the books received as we have a library which we can be rightly proud of. Library Leafers‌..

Congratulations to the Manawatu Vintage and Classic Motorcycle Club’s Swap Meet! This event year on year is starting to get bigger and bigger, with store sites slowly spreading out across the paddock towards the Manawatu Vintage Car Club Spares. One of the highlights from the morning were the three unrestored C-Series BSA bikes, consisting of a 1947 BSA C10 (sold) and two 1950’s BSA C11 bikes with their 4-speed gearboxes. All from the Pahiatua area. (unsold at the time of me leaving) Moving on, the working bee day was very busy this month, with Mike Khull bringing in a trailer load of Post-War Ford V8 parts. Along with the normal jobs, we are slowly removing the old tyres from the wheels, however to dump the old tyres it is somewhat expensive at $6 each. So if any members would like some for growing potatoes, or have any ideas on how we can get rid of them, see your Spares members. With Christmas just around the corner, the Spares Team would like to wish every member a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Safe travelling everyone!
