Wow the mid winter lunch and the presentations of 50 and 60 year memberships have been presented and the Spares department is now officially named The Disher Family Spares. It hosts a very nice plaque above the leading door into Spares to mark the occasion. Our thanks go to Diane Quarrie our National President who travelled from Hawkes Bay to present the awards, also to our past Chairman Colin Brooks for arranging and presenting the Disher family plaque. The disappointment of the day was that Warren Birch was again in hospital so could not attend the function to receive his 50 year award and badge. Even up until the day before the event he was still determined to attend but unfortunately was not well enough. Warren has requested that the presentation be made to him at a later date and his wishes are for this to take place at the club rooms. I personally feel that the afternoon was a wonderful success and have not heard otherwise from anyone I have spoken to. This comes down to a great team effort by all who devoted their time and help into making it so, from setting up of the hall and tables to the welcoming committee at the door, to the cleaning up and re-organising of the hall at the end of the day. Far too many people were involved to mention them all, but they know who they are and on behalf of the club I would like to convey our thanks to them. Also I would like to thank all those who gave me advice and help, as this is the first function that I have chaired for the club. Well Ivan Benge certainly topped the list of the day with 60 years of continual membership. What an amazing achievement! Then Bob Disher and Tom Hayes both with 50 years of membership, I feel privileged to be associated with them. It reflects on what a great club we have when its members are sharing memberships of this magnitude, so congratulations to these members.
The monthly meeting went well on Wednesday night. Thanks to Michael Gaffaney for stepping in and taking over the position of secretary while Winton is away. It was also good to welcome two new members - Angela Biggs and Wells Scadden. Please make sure that these members are not left on their own and are included in everything. A big thank you to Alton Harrison and Peter Roe for their wonderful presentation of the Levin caravan industry. This was certainly an eye opener. It demonstrated how such a large industry employing so many smaller industries and workers can diminish overnight, a very enlightening presentation. We do need speakers for our club nights so if you can do a presentation or know of someone who can, don’t hesitate to contact me. We also need Club Captains so have a thought or two about this position. Bob and John have everything worked out for this year so it is a good start and I am sure that there will be plenty of volunteers to help. While this position is timeconsuming it is also very rewarding from the point of self-satisfaction, and it is also one of the most important roles in keeping the club together and focused, so how about it? It is your club and we need your help! I still have some sashes left so if you would like one let me know. These look great and are a wonderful promotion for the club. It would be great to have a big turn out on Daffodil Day with all our cars on display and showing sashes, let the public really see who we are. The Saturday working bee had a good turn out this month and it is good to see Bev and Pete still helping in the library when required. Again great to see so many willing helpers and it is a very social, rewarding morning for a chat and to meet up. Hope to see you at the ‘Night Owl’ on the 15th.

The Mid Winter Luncheon was a momentous occasion for Horowhenua. We intend to report on this next issue and publish some excellent photographs taken by Bob B. We congratulate Tom, Bob and Ivan for their dedication and commitment. We can’t forget Warren who adds another 50+ years making it 210 years membership! We wish you well in your recovery Warren. This is an interesting day’s run to Vern Jensen’s Aotearoa Wooden Wheels, Murray’s Irish Pub and to The Coach House Museum in Feilding. Meet at the clubrooms Tiro Tiro Road at 8.45am in preparation for a 9am departure. Instructions will be available on the day. Lunch will be had at Murray’s Irish Pub at midday. This is going to be a great day out.

Please bring your club banner, they will also be there on sale. We will have the Fire Brigade in attendance, the Ulysses Motorcycle Club and the Morris and Wolseley Clubs all in support. Members will not be required to approach the public seeking donations, Cancer Society Collectors will undertake this task. Please be there with your car and talk to the public.

CLUB CAPTAIN: John White thought the winter lunch which was very successful, will be an annual event. Cost likely to increase to $30 from present $25. Drew attention to forthcoming events. GENERAL BUSINESS: Peter Kelly advised a 1923/4 Austin Clifton Tourer for sale. Don McLaren has steel frames suitable for shelving. Colin Geange had a stub axle needing identification. SPEAKERS: Alton Harrison spoke of the caravan industry in Levin which was a big employer in prime. The Hurst were the first builders with the Ventura and Alton employed by them and then the Sprites which were imported. When import restrictions came in they decided to start on their own and build their own brands The Pioneer and Oxford. In 1960's were just 4 volume caravan builders in N Z. Business grew to building 25 caravans per week with 180 employees and selling through 13/14 dealers throughout NZ. Even built a 2 storey model. Peter Rowe started with Mullins supplying Squabs and Awnings. Then joined as manager of what had been Hurst business after the purchaser died. By 1979 when price of petrol doubled saw a decline of big cars and this slowed caravan sales. When Government imposed a 25% Sales Tax the industry went into decline. The industry lasted some 15 years in Levin and used a lot of local suppliers who were also affected. Some cars were better than others for towing. A very interesting presentation reflected by the large number of questions being asked. The meeting closed at 8.55pm.

The Service Car has what is believed to be ‘Wanganui - Hawera - New Plymouth’ written across the carrier box. Also the letters S.O.S. are recorded beneath. The photo itself appears to have been developed in Patea. No information is known about the incident or the identification of the vehicles involved. Could you please let the Editor know any information that may make this a worthy photograph to be sent to Beaded Wheels?

Saturday morning of Queen’s Birthday Weekend, a group from our Branch set off to take part in this Rally. Some of us travelled in convoy to Mike Khull’s residence at Foxton Beach, where we had morning tea before setting off down the back roads to just south of Bulls. Some of us have done this trip before, and it was really great to have some newer members joining us this time. On arrival in Wanganui we went to the Branch Club Rooms to collect our Rally Packs, and have a really good poke around in the Spares Shed. Quite a few “treasures” were found! Having collected our packs, we drove to the Grand Hotel in downtown Wanganui where most of us were staying. Neville, “mine host,” joined us for dinner that night. He is always good company and runs a good, basic hotel. He looks after us very well, which is why we keep going back!
After a good dinner (which included apple pie specially made for Colin!) Neville played us a few tunes on his Grand Piano while we enjoyed a glass of port, which just finished the evening off nicely.
Next morning we were up bright and early, enjoyed a good breakfast in the dining room, then set off for the starting point of the Rally. We set off at our allotted times, and toured around some fantastic scenery among the hills and dales of Wanganui. The lunch stop we have been to before, but it is ideal for the purpose. A large, rambling building which can seat well over a hundred at a time. We were served delicious soup and rolls, plus all kinds of cakes and fruit if you wanted it. At the end of the afternoon run we finished at the Club Rooms for afternoon tea before returning to the Hotel to prepare for the evening dinner and prize-giving. The dress code was “Period Encouraged, but optional.” Most of us elected to dress in period style, just to set the mood.
As there were about 20 of us in total, we took up two tables. Except for the local Branch we had the largest number of attendees! It was a good night, but we didn’t win any prizes apart from a raffle! The dinner was held at a local Bowling Club, so our group had travelled in taxi-vans to the venue, which was ideal.
Monday morning we set off for home, stopping off at Sanson for “brunch” at Viv’s Kitchen. Our group of cars created so much attention in the car park it was hard to get inside to order our meal! It never ceases to amaze me how many people are drawn to look at the cars, and exclaim how they “used to have one of these,” or “I learnt to drive in one of these!” At least we are giving some pleasure by touring around in our cars. All in all, it was a great weekend away, and no doubt will be repeated next year!

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run John Kinvig
Twenty five keen vintage car enthusiasts gathered at the Fig Tree Café on Ferguson Drive Upper Hutt……. .....for an excellent lunch and natter before taking a very pleasant drive to Phil and Coral Kidd’s beautiful property in the Mangaroa Valley. Phil is busy building a replica 1923 Essex Speedster that is going to end up being a copy of the car that was specially built for a Mr R B Jackson who was the President of the Hudson Motor Company Detroit USA. Most of the mechanicals appear to be well on the way to completion and Phil is at the woodwork and panel beating stage. Phil gave us a talk about the history of the Essex car and an account of the work that he had completed to date. Eventually after many questions we adjourned to their house for tea and coffee. Thank you very much Phil and Coral for a most enjoyable visit.

Well, here I am just celebrating 12 months in Levin and something like 9 months in the great company of the Horowhenua Vintage Car Club! Not long enough to write one book, but time enough to take charge of 8747 + or others. So now to the formal report. Pauline and I are both enjoying the stress of learning the ropes. Enthusiasm, yes! Knowledge? Yeah aaah? Please note that if a guest speaker notes that there is, deep in the shelves, a book regarding their subject, please give advance warning so it can be found. Also feel free to offer ideas to make the library work for you. The new leaves!
With winter once again with us, it looks like the Horowhenua Members are in hibernation with June being very quiet on the Spares front. However it was pleasing to get two or three emails of support from our members last month, in regards to last month’s Spares report. On an interesting note we are starting to get members of the public coming in on working bee days, with boxes of bits and pieces, this is excellent to see and may it continue. On a final note members will see on club night that Spares now has a name, The Disher Family Spares, and it was a great honour to show the Disher family around the Spares on the day of the mid winter dinner. Safe travelling everyone.

Hyde Park Village is approximately 5kms north of the end of the Expressway and the Village and Café are on the left off State Highway 1. 11.45am Meet for lunch at Viv’s Kitchen, Sanson.
