CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
As we go to print for the September MAG, it feels like we have unfinished business as the big event for the month, being the Daffodil Rally for Cancer still to be held on the 25th. Fingers crossed that the hours of work in getting this event set up pay’s off! We had a really good turnout at the “unofficial” run /visit to Lemons Museum and what a surprise it turned out to be. Having visited the original up the end of Puketitiri Road some 20 odd years ago, I was curious how this new set up would be. I must confess I was amazed! Apart from the dozen or so interesting cars, there was an amazing display of all sorts of stuff from irons, washing machines, typewriters, forestry gear and much much more. Well done to Adrian Lemon for the set-up and a big thanks for opening up for us on Sunday. After the visit some of us headed to the Art Deco Café in Esk Valley and topped of the morning with a coffee and cake/ food at what can also be described as a great café. Many thanks to Steve D for organising the visit (and for directing the parking!) Our club night had a wrap up to the Lemon Museum visit with a show of the photos taken and a talk by Steve D on the history of the place and Doug Bixley on many of the cars that were on display. Well done guys and despite the small number at the club night (yes only 23!!) It was a good night. There was one potential new member having a look in, Michael Burrows, and lets hope we see him again. I don’t need to make

more of a point about the need for new members as we all know, the future of our clubs depends on new blood to ensure we remain viable. You would have all read the Club Captains Report for July, and Esther’s advice that she will step down from her role at the next AGM, and this certainly highlights the need for new members and others to take up the challenge of Committee roles. There are a number of us that have been on the committee in various roles over the past six or seven years and while we have been relatively blessed with volunteers, we do need to be mindful that of the need to ensure we have sufficient members with various skills to run the club going forward. As with Esther, I will also be stepping down and hence another position will require filling. Food for thought without waiting until we get to June! As we move towards spring, let’s hope we get some nice warm weather and the enthusiasm for Vintage Cars kicks in, maintenance is all up to date and we can look forward to some good times ahead. There are a number of runs coming over the next few months including Safari and the Homestead Runs so fingers crossed for good weather, well behaved mechanical’s and fun times. That’s all from me. CLUB CAPTAIN// By Esther Smith
Our visit on the 11th of August to Adrian Lemmon’s Museum in Hedgeley Road proved to be a great success, Adrian needs to be congratulated on what he has achieved there. I remember visiting the collection on several occasions when it was up at Puketitiri, so to see the cars and many other items on display again and presented in such an interesting way was just great, you could literally spend hours there such are the many and varied items in the collection, and I understand the second shed has even more treasures yet to be unveiled. At the following club night we decided to have a talk about the history and contents of the collection. Steve Donovan gave us a rundown on the recent history, then Doug Bixley talked about the history of the cars, and their association with local identities of Hawke’s Bay. The gods were with us so we were able to get photos up on the screen to accompany his talk. Sometimes the system can be cantankerous not unlike a few people in the club, but anyway we are looking to update that system so it is more reliable and simpler to use.
well as I got a chauffeur and Graham got a pie from Osler’s. When we were in Gizzy we went to a place called the Works down in the Harbour area (old freezing works building now a restaurant what else!!), we told the waitress we would all come and see her at Labour weekend, so don’t let us down.
In September Kevin and Gaye Heyward are organising a shed run there is more detail further on in the MAG, so get those cars out and come along for a bit of exploring.

Then in October for our annual Safari we are off to Gisborne, we will be joining in with the Gisborne and other neighbouring branches for the weekend so get that entry form in, as they close at the end of August. Graham and I were in Gisborne a few weeks ago. I had to go for work, however I felt a bit guilty as it was the same day as Graham’s birthday hmmmm!! The solution was I asked him to come along for the road trip, it worked
Again a reminder as you will be reading in Beaded Wheels, planning is well underway for the Vero rally being held on 17>22 January 2021, so time to think seriously about attending as it’s virtually on our door step, this is your chance to attend a National Rally happening virtually in our backyard . But the good news is that doesn’t happen until November You see the committee does make life changing decisions for the club sometimes. TAKING A LOOK BACK AT ICONIC MODELS//
A lot of automakers are looking back to their iconic models, offering the moneyed classes an opportunity to buy brand-new versions of cars they previously only saw in movies. Aston Martin’s DB4 GT and Jaguar’s D-Type projects come to mind. But Bentley wasn’t satisfied with a project that reintroduced a previous success. When they recreated a classic to celebrate the company’s centenary, they went one-of-akind. The 1939 Bentley Corniche pictured here is only the second to be built, and the only one currently in existence. The first one was lost to bombing raids on Dieppe, France during World War II. Built as part of an exercise to develop a sportier variant of the MkV sedan, the Corniche was a sort of proto-four door coupe, with a B-pillar-less greenhouse and reverse-opening rear doors. Powered by the same 4.25 litre as the MkV, the Corniche was able to sustain speeds of over 161km/h at Brooklands, owing some September 2019
of its success to a new streamlined grille design not seen before on Bentleys. Unique, is the central headlight beneath the grille. Not many cars have been designed with such a layout (early Tatras among the ones that were). Like with other special Bentley projects, the construction of the new Corniche was undertaken by its special Mulliner division, the spiritual successor of the coachbuilder of the same name. Bentley says that Mulliner used as many period components and suppliers as they could, putting special care into the interior. Similar projects restored W.O. Bentley’s 1931 8 Litre and the Birkin Team Blower with all three cars taking part in celebrations this year to commemorate 100 years of Bentley. Rebuilding a one-off sports sedan is a lot cooler than trying to sell a $368,594 book. Why not do both.
JAMES BOND’S 1965 ASTON MARTIN DB5 AUCTIONED FOR $6.4 MILLION//
CNN reported that the street-legal 1965 Aston Martin DB5 originally created to promote the James Bond movie Thunderball -- complete with functioning rotating license plates and tire slashers -sold for $6.4 million at a classic car auction in California. Though the model was originally created to promote the 1965 James Bond film Thunderball, the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 -- equipped with tools fit for a spy including tire slashers, fake guns, and a “bulletproof ” screen -- never actually appeared on-screen. Despite that, no 007 vehicle has ever sold for more than this particular DB5. The winning bid totaled $6.4 million.
Of the spy gadgets integrated into the vehicle -- all of which are completely operational -- the new owner has a tire slasher, rotating license plates, nail spreaders, a “smoke” screen, an oil-slick maker, a pop-up “bulletproof ” screen, and a pair of fake guns set below the front turn signals that sound realistic gun shots. The model actually used in Thunderball went to auction back in 2010 and only sold for $4.6 million, and that DB5 did not have integrated spy gear until after the fact.
The 1965 car was up for sale at a classic car auction in Monterey, California. Not only was this winning bid the highest price ever paid for a “James Bond” car, but also it was the most paid at auction, ever, for an Aston Martin DB5.

SUNDAY CLUB RUN// By Steve Donovan
LEMON’S MUSEUM On the 11th of September we met at Bayview Township ready to visit Adrian Lemon Museum. This was an off calendar event for our branch and I wondered how many people would attend. To my surprise we had 30 cars and 61 people. It was great to have such a turn out as it proves people are looking for different things to look at and it gave an opportunity to dispel all the talk as to where the collection from Puketitri was. The drive way was a bit of a challenge with so many cars to park but in true VCC style we got them all parked. After an introduction mostly by me as Adrian is not real good with the public, we went inside. To say we were blown away was an understatement what was a collection of cars an memorabilia collected by Adrian’s Father over many years and stored in old sheds has now turned into a display that any commercial museum would be proud of. What he and his helpers have created is amazing. Some back ground. The collection has all come from Puketitri. In 2006 Adrian bought the property sold his house next to his fathers and shifted into a temporary September 2019
dwelling. With the assistance of his employers machinery at the time he did all the earth works. In 2008 they erected the shed out of kit sets by themselves. In 2010 the lining was completed and everything was shifted into the sheds and from there the challenge started, cleaning and setting out the exhibits which was a mammoth task, as I have been shown the other shed as a before and after. His exhibits take people down memory lane as I heard many comments of I remember that or mum had one of those so there is something for everybody to look at. The list of cars is as follows and is all the cars that were in Puketitri . 4 / Buicks. Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. Napier. Bean. 2 / Studebaker. Austin. 1926 model T. Humber Imperial that was used in the 1953 Royal Tour of New Zealand. Truly something for everybody to look at. In time they are going to sort the other shed and set up exhibits. Foot Note. HUMOROUS DRIVING JOKES:
THE BLONDE AND THE BANK A blonde walks into a bank in central New York City and asks for the loan officer. She says she's going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so the blonde hands over the keys to a new Rolls Royce. The car is parked on the street in front of the bank; she has the title and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the blonde for using a $250,000 Rolls as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then proceeds to drive the Rolls into the bank's underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the blonde returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says, "Miss, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?" The blonde replies, "Where else in central New York City can I park my Rolls for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?"

HOOTERS// Ana @ Hooters Hi Folks, Firstly apologies for missing a couple of months there but sadly whilst over in the UK my granmother Joan became unwell and passed. At the great age of 90 she had a fantastic life and was very happy that both myself and my dad (her only son) were both in the UK for her final weeks. We will continue to live life to the full just like she did: ‘Always with a glass of bubbles in hand’ Whilst I was in the UK I just had to pop by and see the Swallow in it’s new home. Many of you may remember it from last years Art Deco and it’s final NZ journey in the Art Deco Car Parade, with a very privileged yours truly driving it. Well, I’m happy to report she looks great in her new surroundings with our good friend Martin Males aka Monte. Here are some pics for you:
The team have been doing a fantastic job keeping Hooters running through the winter season. With a few winter contracts we’ve been keeping them busy with convoys and our winter visitors. Luckily Hawke’s Bay always seems to turn on the sunshine so as long as we wrap up warm then the beautiful clear crisp days are just perfect for the open tops. We’ve also had plenty of locals enjoying our winter deals and most preferring to take the luxury sedans for a day of family gatherings or friends visiting for our warmer winter climate. There’s still plenty going on in the Bay! Most of the team have had there winter breaks and are getting focused for the season ahead. Plenty of those winter jobs to keep us busy. This season is looking to be a bumper season with cruise ships coming in with a few to gently break us into the season and then thick and fast from late November through till April.
