CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
Greeting to you all and I hope you are avoiding the winter flu & coughs & colds that seem to be doing the rounds of late. Sadly I managed to get snagged by cold and missed the Saturday Car rides on Winter Deco, so a big thanks to the crew that stepped in, and in particular Hooters who again fronted up with open cars for the many hardy souls wanting to be exposed to the elements! With the chosen charity of St John there was a reasonable sum raised and they were well pleased with our efforts. As Club Captain Esther notes, the Sunday Auto Ramble was well attended and numbers caught us out a little at the start, but in true VCC fashion we pushed on and all was good in the very swish looking clubrooms for the High Tea. Certainly a big thank you to those who made it all possible and such a success. Going forward, we have a number of events tabled in this MAG, and on the WEB site, and now we are even running reminders via the email system in the week leading up to an event. With this level of communication let’s hope we see more participation in the clubs activities and if you have any guest or potential new members don’t hesitate to bring them along. New blood is always welcome, particularly as our numbers have reduced slightly over the past twelve months.

Daffodil Day is not far away so get your friends and family together to come along and support this worthy cause, as they can come along in modern cars, it’s just taking part! Don’t forget to get your registration in for Safari Weekend if you want to participate. Planning for next year’s Art Deco Festival is underway and an update will be provided to members at the next meeting, so be warned, watch out for the Registration details and get in early rather than miss out and have to watch from the sidelines!! So that’s it from me, see you at the next meeting & drive safely.
$720.10 RAISED//
Some members of the Hawkes Bay VCC raised $720.10 for St John on Saturday afternoon of Winter Art Deco by providing rides around town to the public. Thanks to Hooters who provided 3 open tourers and their driver’s time plus Trevor Charman, Steve Trott, Graham Smith, Kevin McGrath, Malcolm Blair, Wim Hulman. Also Lesley Blair, Esther Smith & I were busy getting the punters into the cars and taking their donations.
A cheque was presented to St John from our Chairman Ian, on behave of the HBVCC outside their station in Hastings. 7

Winter Art Deco has come and gone and this year the weather played ball. I could hear the rain in the early hours of Saturday morning, but by lunchtime it was all clear. We offered car rides to raise funds for the St John Ambulance Association, there is never anything like the summer crowd numbers , but we still managed to raise over $700.00, thanks in the main to visitors to the city and it is surprising how many there are. Many thanks to the Hooters crew for supporting us by supplying open cars which the punters prefer at least in fine weather. We will do a presentation to St John and hopefully get some publicity for the club. As a result of the fine weather the Auto Ramble was well attended, when I saw the number of cars streaming into the soundshell, I had to do a quick dash into work to print off some more instructions. I had written those instructions when it was cold and bleak, so my thinking was about 20 cars, I think we ended up with about 35 including some visitors from other clubs and a few enthusiastic members of the

public. I really would like to maintain what is left my sanity, so please RSVP by the time requested, on Saturday morning I had 56 on my list for the high tea, but our attendance was more like 76, which caused headaches for both place settings and catering. I would like to thank Pauline McGrath, Carolyn Anderson, Barbi and Jim Speers, Carol Eager, Jude Coe and Lesley Blair for their help with the high tea, the food was great and the set up was impressive. Many thanks to Kevin McGrath for taking over at the last minute as the July meeting Chairman when I had a bad cold, after organising Lee-Anne and Bertie to be the speakers, I missed out on what I was told was an entertaining evening. Thanks to both of them for coming along and sharing their stories. At the last AGM I was again elected as Club Captain, thanks for your support, not that there was exactly much in the way of competition. However when I took this role over I said I would do it for three years, therefore this is my last term. I am

» Preparing the high tea giving everyone plenty of warning so future prospects out there can think about joining the gang (sorry committee). On Sunday the 11th of August we are slipping in an extra event, this is a visit to the Adrian Lemon Museum which has reopened in Hedgeley Rd. All those keen to go should meet in the centre of the Bay View township by 9.45 am, we will then head up to the museum, entry is by a donation of $10 p.p. Afterwards we could head off to the Art Deco Valley Café on SH5 at the head of the Esk Valley. Then on Sunday the 25th of August is The VCC Day-Daffodil Rally for Cancer, Malcolm and Lesley Blair are organising this event, we have a different format this year it will be an interesting day well worth attending. It is open to non VCC members as well, in any make or age of vehicle, so tell your friends and wider contacts, encourage them to come along and support a great cause. In September we are organising a shed/ restoration run there will be more detail in the next MAG, then in October our annual Safari which is heading to Gisborne, we will be joining in with the Gisborne and other neighbouring branches for the weekend so look out for the entry form in this MAG. I
understand the Captain Cook Motel is fully booked, but Gisborne has lots of other good accommodation. Don’t forget to get your entries in by the end of August Also as you will be reading in Beaded Wheels, planning is well underway for the Vero rally being held on 17-22 January 2021, it’s actually not that far away, so time to think seriously about attending as it’s virtually on our door step, and if you haven’t been to a big national rally before then this is your chance. The Lemon Museum has been relocated by Adrian Lemon from Puketitiri to Hedgeley Rd, there is an amazing 6000 items including Vehicles on display.
