CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
As I write this report I reflect back on the past year as Chairman and look forward to the next twelve months. The past year seems a bit of a blur and I wonder where it has all gone. Again, I would like to thank the committee for their support together with the members who we hope have enjoyed the club and its activities and surroundings. Moving forward a special welcome to the committee for Paul Eager. It is good that we have newer members coming forward and this year’s committee will no doubt serve the club well. The AGM was well attended (might have been helped by the hot savouries!!) and went without too much ado. As Chairman it was my pleasure to deliver the surprise briefing for Ewan Gardiner for outstanding services to the Hawke’s Bay Branch over many years, before calling on John Southward to present the Southward Family Award. As we roll into the new term, we have a number of important events coming up. Firstly the Winter Deco for the 14th & 15th July where we provide Car rides on

the Saturday for an hour and the Run on Sunday. It is imperative that numbers are provided to Steve Donovan as soon as possible for this event as not only are the car rides for charity, numbers are required for the Sunday for Catering. We then host the National AGM on the 3rd -5th August and will require volunteers for transport, again please contact Malcolm Blair or Esther Smith. Then we have the National Cancer Rally day on the 26th August. This event is of National importance not only as a fund raiser for such a worthy cause but a great PR exercise for the VCC to show we are not just about “old cars”. Our local side is being organised by Malcolm & Lesley Blair so please get involved and add your weight (and name to help!). So let’s all roll our sleeves up and get stuck in to having fun with these old girls (cars that is!!) over the coming year.
CLUB CAPTAIN// By Esther Smith
Well the AGM has come and gone and here I am again for another year, so thank you for your support. Thanks also to all the others who put their names forward for both the elected and unelected roles within the club, it is thanks to all these good people and the time and effort they put into the branch that we can continue to operate at such a high level. The June Lady drivers run went well, we would like to see more ladies out driving. I think that with many of us now having later model cars ie those from the 60s to 80’s which are the era of cars we learnt to drive in, it’s pretty easy to join in and participate no excuses. We finished the run at the Napier Customhouse building in Ahuriri, the displays were really interesting. At the great cost of $25.00 to hire the facility for the afternoon, we definitely need to book it again for another club event. July 14th - 15th takes us to Winter Art Deco. Steve Donovan is organising this event, on Saturday we have the Car Rides raising funds for Citizens Advice Bureau. Get your name to Steve if you can help with the rides. On Sunday we have a run, for catering purposes you also need to let Steve know you intend participating. Refer elsewhere in the MAG for more detail. Our National VCC day in support of the Cancer Society. It is been held on Sunday the 26th August and will replace our usual monthly run. Malcolm and Lesley Blair are our organisers for the event, and this is well
underway. They are keen to build on the success of last year’s event which saw 100 entries and raised $1000.00 so put that date in your diary now. COMING EVENTS: Upcoming events are: • Wed 4th July – Midweek run meet at the clubrooms at 10.30 am, and committee meeting evening • Wed. 11th July - Club Night • Winter Art Deco 14th-15th July. Refer details elsewhere in the MAG • Friday 27th July- The Kitchen: A great social evening, Get your names to Allan and Helen Twort • Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th August-Our National VCC AGM to be based at the East Pier You will notice that above I have put in the dates for the National AGM, all members are welcome to attend the AGM which is on the Saturday morning. This is a great opportunity to observe at firsthand how the National Body works. The morning tea will be catered, so let me or Peter Ball know if you intend coming along. I look forward to seeing you all out and about at our branch events. And get your entries in for Safari.

LADIES RUN 2018// By Lee-Anne Freeman
It was pretty much a spur of the moment to pick up the HBVCC Mag and read it. I had a feeling that the ladies run must be coming up and I had probably missed it. Fate should have it that it was today at 1.15pm meeting at Frimley Park, 15 Lyndhurst Street Hastings, Well the weather was pleasant enough to take my open top 1958 Austin Healey Frog Eye Sprite for a jaunt on a June Winters afternoon. But I didn’t want to go alone so I rang a friend, Jeanette and asked her to join me as a navigator. She kindly agreed and I picked her up from Taradale and off we set. Warm gloves, coats and hats and afternoon tea plate sorted, we were equipped for an afternoon of winter motoring. At the starting point we had a lovely chit chat with fellow competitors then armed with our set of instructions we were on our mission. Jeanette told me where to turn and landmarks to look for as we followed instructions as stated, answered questions and documented our answers in the appropriate spaces on the sheet. Negotiating the pretty streets of Hastings and Clive through to the Marine Parade of Napier. Twenty one questions completed later, we arrived at the Ahuriri Customs House next to the Iron Pot Wharf. Which was built in 1895 of beautiful Kauri and native timber.

We had a delicious afternoon tea while enjoying a talk by a volunteer from the Custom House Group who collate the extensive documents, photographs and memorabilia collected over a number of years. Most of this relating to the use of the building and its history. The finale was the prize giving. After all participants answers were collated, our names were read out as the winners. 16 correct answers out of 21 won us the basket of goodies. As an extra surprise we were presented a handmade gift made by Helen White for braving the run in an open top car. Thank you to all involved. Jeanette and myself look forward to next year’s event as we now have the pleasure of setting the Ladies Run 2019.

675CC MODEL T MOTORBIKE// By Wayne Richards
Around twenty or so years ago, I brought home a single cylinder Model T ford motor. As for why, I don’t know. The story goes that way back in the depression days some clever farming person wanted a small motor and had a big one, namely the model T. With the aid of a hacksaw, (no cutting discs in those days) they cut behind number one cylinder across the top of the crankcase then down behind the centre main bearing. The rear section of the crank came forward to carry the flywheel, Both manifolds were cut, the water jacket and sump plated up and presto a single cylinder 675 cc Ford T motor. Number two piston is fixed in the hole it once travelled in. Starting requires two turns on the flywheel with choke on, then ignition (trembler coil ) on and choke off. Nine times out of ten it’s away,i t runs pretty well but the balance could be better. Being a follower of Youtube, thanks to a friend that does equally odd projects, the motor bike idea was hatched. The wheels were space savers (big ones) with the
centres removed, the hubs are two inch water pipe with inserts to carry the Chinese bearings. The spokes are three quarter tube from the local scrap man as is the one inch galv pipe that forms the frame. The seat came from a mate as did the cheese box date 1916 (period accessory) that carries the battery and trembler coil. The headlight (another mate)is Ford again but from the colour of the glass should probably be on the other end .An old fire extinguisher serves as a cooling water tank and the fuel tank came from a rotary hoe. The right angle drive was once a Ford 10 differential (English, and yes it leaks) driven by a vee belt with a jockey pulley to tighten the belt, acting as a clutch .Final drive is spares from my CT110 postie bike and the brake is a Model T transmission band around a flat belt pulley. The project kept me amused for a month or so and cost next to nothing. It’s surprisingly rideable but I suspect land transport may think otherwise. I guess it’s all a bit silly but what does one do with a quarter of a Model T! 11
HOOTERS// Ana @ Hooters Hi Folks, Normally I’d be saying how quiet June is but it’s been a busy month for the Hooters team as the initial move to the new shed at 27 Wakefield Street is pretty much completed. Still so much to do but for now, we are in there and getting started on making it Hooters HQ, New and Improved!
The whole team have been amazing. We called for volunteers and the team really pitched in. We got most of the stuff off the walls and moved in one day. What a funny sight it was to see vintage cars running up and down the road loaded up with tyres, spares, pictures frames and memorabilia. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So here’s some of my favourite pics:
A busy winter ahead for some of us whilst other are heading for warmer climates. Whatever you’re doing this winter, just remember to enjoy life and have fun! Well that’s it for another month, be seeing you…

MID WEEK RUN // By Barrie Brown
It could have rained, snowed or frozen over but it did none of these. Gathering as usual at the club rooms from which the 12 or so cars, mostly classic, headed off for a short trip around the new Te Awa subdivision to our first stop at the Waitangi Regional Park to take in the Atea a Rangi Star Compass and associated information boards.,These cover a huge range of very interesting information about the area, the river flow changes and early missionary William Colenso.
The entire area is worth more time that we had and one place we need to return to. The work and detail has the attraction to demand more and greater understanding. From here we travelled via Farndon Rd with a wiggle around West Hastings, through Flaxmere, down past the prison, although some missed this turn and realising that there is no prison in their direction turned around and found their way.

Entering the settlement of Paki Paki was our second stop, or was supposed to be but some just slowed and drove on. Pitty really as this little settlement is chock full of history, far too much to place here, so my best answer to that is that we arrange a Club Run to visit our beautiful country Churches. Those who did stop in Paki Paki were very taken with the area and the many Churches, think there are four, in this quiet place. The Old Catholic Church now decommissioned is well worth the visit as is the now Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception, along with the other Churches and Marae “Suzanne Aubert lived in Hawke’s Bay (1871-1883) she was first a regular visitor and later lived there. She was fluent in the Māori language and at ease within Māori culture and she went to Pakipaki to nurse and dispense medicines, to catechise and teach. She was also the driving force behind the building of a Catholic church at Pakipaki (1880). ”
Leaving Puki Puki we headed East and along Munity Rd, Middle Rd, Crystal Rd, Mt Erin Rd into Georges Rd and on to finish up at Robb and Ann Watts place for lunch, at least that was the plan, but plans are made to change. Due to the Watts having meetings with the builders etc of their new home we had to move from the Mahora Orchard to Mark and Anne Patersons orchard in Karamu Rd. This is our lunch stop, some have soup and obviously enjoy what Helen has prepared.
So with our first stop of the day at “Atea a Rangi Star Compass” and our visit in Paki Paki the day had more meaning than planned.
Mark invites us to pick some tree ripened Pacific Queen apples which added a nice touch to our June mid-week run.
Now if I had done my homework we could have enjoyed a cup of mulled wine to wrap up the day.
Worth noting and mentioned was the fact that in a way we recognised the Matariki on this day.
“Matariki is a star cluster which appears in the night sky during mid-winter. According to the Maramataka ( the Maori lunar calendar) the reappearance of Matariki, brings the old lunar year to a close and marks the beginning of the new Year. Hence, Matariki is associated with the Maori New Year.”

SEEKING ANY KEEN POWER CYCLISTS Paul Furkert, a Wairarapa VCC member, has recently recommissioned a power cycle (Paul’s is a 1936 BSA bicycle driven by a 1951 Trojan Mini Motor (via a friction drive onto the rear wheel)). This machine has a top speed of around 20mph, so isn’t really suitable for going on standard VCC rallies. Paul is looking to get in touch with other owners of power cycles who might be interested in a Power Cycle rally. The idea is to all meet up at a county pub / campground somewhere in the North Island one weekend next summer, and do some short (and slow) explorations of the local area on our machines. Owners of other slow bikes (e.g. mopeds or veteran/vintage motorbikes with top speeds of less than 30mph) would also be most welcome. If you have a suitable machine, and would be interested in such a weekend away, please get in touch with Paul (email paul.furkert@xtra.co.nz or phone (06) 3795355 or text 02040273746). If there is sufficient interest from cycle / bike owners, the finer details of the rally will be worked out in consultation with all potential participants.
