CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
Firstly a big thank you to those who got stuck in from the outset and put together the National VCC AGM that we hosted from the 3-5 August weekend. Particular thanks to Esther Smith who put in the hard yards in dealing with the venue and registrations, Malcolm & Lesley Blair who put together the Transport arrangement’s (no one was left at the airport) and Steve Donovan for entertaining the troops on the Sunday Shed Run & morning tea. On top of these people, there was a great band of helpers ferrying people to and fro, putting on the morning tea at the clubrooms and those who formed the entertainment on the Saturday night dinner. Here we were very lucky to have had Lyndsay Browne organise Tessa-May and Lauren to perform with a great repertoire of songs. The Graham Smith Quiz went down a treat showing a great level of concentration and knowledge (that may be stretching it a little!) The finale was the chance to sell off some amazing Cup Cakes to kick start the Wellington Branches Cancer Fundraising with no shortage of buyers.

A big thanks also to a good turnout of our club members to the Saturday Morning AGM. It was an informative meeting and it’s always good to see the workings of the National Body and hear firsthand some of the issues that they have to deal with. On a local note, thanks to Club Captain Esther for again stepping up to the breach during my absence from the last Club Night. Coming up on the we have our September Club Night and Run so let’s kick off the spring season with a good turnout (fingers crossed for fine weather) and we are also hosting the North Shore Club for a dinner on Saturday 22nd September (ref Up & Coming Events section) and numbers are required in advance and limited to 100 people. So, that’s it from me. See you at the run and the next meeting.
CLUB CAPTAIN// By Esther Smith
The National AGM is now history, it was an interesting event, but from an organisers view point you can’t help but be relieved that it’s all finally over without any great mishaps. . We couldn’t believe the weather, prior to and after the event we have had lovely weather, that weekend it choose to be miserable and wet, so much for showing off sunny Hawke’s Bay.

Having East Pier as the venue was great, I had been concerned that it might be a bit small, but it worked well in the end. Also given the weather, having accommodation attached to the venue and the rest of the accommodation within easy walking distance worked a treat.
We have continued to tweak/improve the program for the weekend. It will be a great event.
The AGM and executive meetings went off well, with good attendances, thanks for the local support. I think the Saturday night dinner left attendees a bit dazed, what with our Chairman been in fine form as MC, we had great entertainment organised by Lyndsay then a quiz organised by Graham to finally finish the brain cells off. On Sunday Steve D had organised an impressive shed run, it finished at the clubrooms for morning tea. We received many complimentary comments about our fine establishment. A huge thanks goes to all those who helped out and provided support during the planning and on the actual weekend. Special thanks to Malcolm and Lesley Blair for organising transport for delegates to and from the airport, they

SUNDAY CLUB RUN 16TH SEPTEMBER// The 2018 Church Run. One you will not want to miss. Our run this month will take us to some interesting and historical Churches around the place and out into the country. Some churches are still used and some have been converted for other use. On this run we will only come across one church that is holding its service on this day. We may be able to enter some of the churches to take in their beauty. Be at the start by 9.15am. The run will start at 9.30am and covers about 95KM Our starting point is, Gimblett Road out at the Roy’s Hill area off SH50. You will need to bring morning tea and lunch and fill the petrol tank. Places we will visit include Pakipaki, Puketapu, Eskdale, Napier. At Pakipaki we will be shown around two or perhaps three churches by Charles Ropitini. The churches there are. • 1880 – Church of the Immaculate Conception built by the Society of Mary and Suzanne Aubert • 1923 – Soldiers War Memorial Church of Saint Luke’s designed by James ChapmanTaylor • 1968 – Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception design by John Scott September 2018
Following this part the run will see us take morning tea in the Napier Botanical Gardens At the finish of the run we have use of the hall at St Michaels Church in Puketapu as well as some early history of the Jones Family of SW Jones Transport who have strong ties with the area as well as a long history. We have the church Hall booked for this part of the day giving us cover if it is wet We would like to ask a $5 donation for each car for use as donations back to suitable Churches. Given the purpose of the day, Church Run, for those who wish to make a full day of things there is a movie showing on this day in Havelock North at Cinema Gold, if you want to join us you need to book your own seats, following the movie we can find somewhere to enjoy dinner. Barrie & Lyndsay Browne THE SONG KEEPERS Havelock North Sun Sept 16 4pm In Australia’s Central Desert, west of Alice Springs, a 140-year musical legacy of ancient Aboriginal languages and German Baroque chorales is being preserved by four generations of women who form the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir. The Lutheran hymns they sing were brought by missionaries who translated them into the local Arrarnta and Pitjantjatjara tongues. The rich choral harmonics of these 16th-century hymns feel innately sacred a world away from their origins, and no lover of the repertoire will want to miss this movie.

MET YOUR NEWEST COMMITTEE MEMBER// MEET PAUL EAGER As Paul Eager is our newest committee member, having been voted on at the last AGM. I thought it was a good opportunity to introduce Paul and of course Carol, so we invited them around for a wee chat. When did you join? They joined the Hawke’s Bay branch of the VCC about 2 years ago. What Vintage car do you drive? A 1946 Armstrong Siddeley Typhoon (Sid) bought before they joined the club. Paul you might have noticed is English, he inherited a family interest in cars particularly British cars. No jokes about British cars and oil leaks please, we’ve heard them all before. Why did you join? Having bought ‘Sid” they wanted to get out and use the vehicle, so joining a club of like-minded people seemed like a good idea. Where did you find out about the VCC? When Paul and Carol moved to NZ or back to NZ in Carol’s case, they joined the Cosmopolitan Club in Napier. There they got to know Malcolm and Lesley Blair also Paul and Jude Coe. So when the latter two couples bought “Historic” cars and joined the VCC, Paul and Carol followed suit some time later when they eventually bought Sid. What are you enjoying about been a member of the VCC? Participating in the social side of the branch activities, mixing with people who share a common interest and getting out and using the car. A bit of background As mentioned earlier Paul is English he met Carol whilst she was on her OE in London, they have two sons. Marc the eldest who is a sparky and volunteer fireman. Just to show the common few degrees of separation between people in HB. Marc is
married to Tony Prebensen’ s (of Holly fame) daughter Gina . Son number two is Geoffrey he is a builder. Paul and Carol have two grandsons with another grandchild imminent. Neither of the boys are really interested in older cars, so maybe the next generation might be. Why Hawke’s’ Bay? They came to NZ in 2002. Paul had worked in Export Shipping he was used to being self-employed, so they were keen to buy a business, and Hawke’s bay looked like a good place to live. After looking at what options were available, they decided to set up Laser Force in Wellesley Road, Napier. It all fell into place when Carol got a part time job at Oldershaw’s in Marewa, that kept them going while they got the business up and running. On being on the committee - Paul says he likes to give back to the community he lives in, so was quite open to the idea of joining the VCC committee. He had been on other committees at various stages of his life and interests. What cars/vehicles have you owned? Well this was an interesting question. Paul reeled of a long list everything from a Mini Pickup, to a Ford Capri, to a Fordson tractor to a BSA with sidecar. And then every few minutes through the conversation he would add another one, so you will have to ask him sometime. Paul still enjoys motorbikes and currently owns a Honda Goldwing. (As a side note he has also done quite a bit of sailing) What other Vintage car would you like to own? The ultimate would be a Mark 9 Jag. Thanks to Paul and Carol for coming along and allowing themselves to be interviewed. It’s great to see newer members participating frequently in the events and activities. It’s great that Paul was willing to accept the committee nomination this year and bring his skills to the table. 11
MID WEEK RUN// By Helen Ball
Eleven cars drove the scenic route to Sherenden District School. It was a picturesque 1 hour drive through Omahu, Ohiti, Matapiro and Otamauri roads and with wattle trees in full colour, lambs in the paddocks, spring is definitely on the way. All this and looking down on the Ngaruroro river valley makes us realise what a stunning part of the country we live in. On arrival at the school we were directed where to park by Headmaster Haisley Robson, and we had time for a quick lunch before being invaded by enthusiastic youngsters. They had fun looking at the

regos to see which was the oldest car – Toms Model A – and then lining up for rides. Kevin’s Austin carrier Austin plus the variety of horn sounds was the big favourite on the day, although most cars at some stage were filled with children to do several laps of the playing field. As the cars circuited the field it was noticed there was a very interested spectator at the fence. It appears one pheasant escaped the pheasant plucker and was fascinated with the activity, so much so he called in a couple of mates. Thanks again to Bob for a great outing.

Wairarapa VCC’s 2nd annual “Stretched Gymkhana” Sunday November 25th 2018 The Wairarapa VCC would like to invite your members to attend our second annual Stretched Gymkhana. Building on the success of last year’s event (and originally inspired by some of the “off-tarmac” events reported on in the Beaded Wheels), on Sunday November 25th 2018 the Wairarapa Branch is holding their second Stretched Gymkhana. NOTE: There is a new location for this year’s event, and an even better course. • •
•
Do you like the excitement of gymkhana style driving, on grass and gravel tracks? Would you enjoy the challenge of trying to navigate, through a winding course, against the clock? o The course will be sufficiently challenging to ensure unsafe speeds cannot be obtained – this isn’t a “Speed Event”. Can you meet the challenge of driving a course consistently, so as to maintain, as far as possible, the same time each lap?
If you answer YES to all of these, then the Stretched Gymkhana is an event not to be missed. Event outline: • • •
• • •
Driver’s briefing will be at 8:45am, with the event expected to finish mid/late afternoon (BYO lunch). The course will be just over ½ a mile in length Half the course will be on gravel roads and half on grass o For the grass section, a bit like a classic gymkhana’s cones course, there will be lots of sharp turns, to ensure that excessive speeds (i.e. greater than the speed limit) cannot be obtained o The gravel tracks are sufficiently narrow and windy such that excessive speeds cannot be obtained There will be two water crossings per lap (concrete bottomed ford) All drivers will have 3 (or more) timed runs over the course, after which the best time for each driver will be calculated (this becomes their individual target time). From then on drivers have to try and match their target time, with 1/2 the field dropping out each time, until a winner is found o For example, if there were 16 drivers, once each driver’s target time has been determined (from the practice runs), all 16 drivers have another run. Then the 8 drivers whose time was closest to their target time would move into the next round. These 8 drivers would have another run, and the 4 whose time was closest to their target time would have another run etc.

This event is not a “Speed Event”. It falls under section 20 of the Branch Manual, as a driving test. The event is limited to 32 combinations (driver + vehicle), so please register early to ensure you don’t miss out The event is reliant on ground conditions being suitable (and the river not being in flood). HOOTERS// Ana @ Hooters Hi Folks, By the time you read this it will be September and that means Spring is finally upon us! It’s a hop skip and a jump to summer from here! Woo Hoo! We’ve had a few car groups through this month with the Early Ford Club, the Petrolheads and even some of the crew attending the New Zealand Vintage Car Club AGM. Steve and the team have been fantastic looking after the place, meaning Phil and I could escape for a week and we headed off to find some sun. We went to Noosa followed by a few days in Fiji. No car stories here I’m afraid but we did manage 7 planes, a ferry, a gondola and two speed boats. Always nice to mix up the transportation options! The rest of the month has seen us prepping for next season and the normal August ‘meetings for the sake of meetings’ as I call them. So many meetings and so little accomplished. I could definitely not have a life in politics! DONATIONS WANTED We have decided to build our own costume department in the new building and we are looking for any donations of Deco outfits. If you have any deco items that you don’t wear or that don’t fit, (the bigger the better) then we would really appreciate the donation. We just know our visitors will love to get dressed up and totally immerse themselves in our

beautiful art deco city. I should perhaps stress here that we are not looking at buying items for the wardbrobe but rather make use of the items that have already been donated to us and just build on the collection so that we can proudly tell our guests that all items have been donated and not just from Napier, we have had donations from all over New Zealand. That’s a pretty impressive statement and just shows the love people have for these items that they want people to use and enjoy them. We need both children and adults clothing, jewellery and even those ‘I’ll fix it at some point’ items. All donations welcome and greatly received. It’s been a funny month weather wise and we’ve still had some brave souls wanting the open tops or the Supertrike but it has been a quiet August in the Hooters camp. September sees Father’s Day, conferences and the start of the wedding season. Usually a great month to ease us back into routine before the cruise ships knock us off our feet and this year is looking to be a bumper season. Well that’s it for another month, be seeing you…

SPARE PARTS// PARTS FOR A 1913 MORRIS BULLNOSE I have received the following request for some spare parts for a 1913 Morris Bullnose. This car was originally from HB owned by Norm Findlay. I think he was a foundation member of the veteran club NZ Glynn & Heather is Norms Son & Daughter. If there is anyone that can help it would be greatly appreciated. Clint Frater (past member of your club): Secretary Queensland Vintage Vehicle Association Inc. Request as follows. During the restoration process, I have found damaged odds and sods, including a timber hood bow that will require replacement as I don’t believe that it is repairable, so I am looking for someone who may be able to manufacture one for me. In addition, the magneto holddown strap has disappeared and as a result, I cannot secure the mag properly, so am looking for one. There strap is a double band, roughly 1” wide (externally) and has a rounded bar crimped in horizontally at either end that fits into the securing hooks that fix it to the mounting plate.
