CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
Another one bites the dust!! Where the hell are these months going too, next thing it will be Christmas. I hope you have all enjoyed the “spring” weather over the past month and have managed some good runs in the cars. Our month kicked in with an interesting speaker on Club Night, a past member most of you will know in Wayne Clark, who gave as an interesting insight into the world of the Traction Engine. There were some interesting photos of a “run” he did on it and the speeds it reached!! A good night enjoyed by all so many thanks Wayne and we hope to see you back soon. Our Club Run (as a lead up to Safari) had a good number of cars (20) particularly given the weather the day before, and the gods certainly looked after us, and we enjoyed a good run up through the Taihape Road area to Waiwhenua Homestead with lunch in a lovely setting amongst the gardens. By the time you read this, Safari will have been done & dusted. Thanks to Harley & Juliette for a great weekend and you couldn’t have wished for better weather, it was perfect. In September we also hosted the North Shore Club to a dinner at the club rooms, and while there numbers were a little down we had good support from the our own members who enjoyed good food, good company and we managed to raise $500 in the process! Many thanks to Kay, Blair’s, Eagar’s & Smithy’s for their hard work. November 2018
Going forward, as per last month’s MAG, and as outlined at the last meeting, we are switching in the New Year to delivery of the MAG via email so please check with us if you are unsure if we have the correct email address. Hard copies (limited numbers) will be available at the Clubrooms and on the Website. Art Deco 2019 is well under way and adverts have been in the last two editions of Beaded Wheels and on our WEB site. Numbers have been rolling in as advised at Club nights so please get your registration form off the WEB site and get it in. We have a Christmas Party booked in for Saturday 1st December (see ad in this MAG) numbers will be required. We also have our Auction night on the 12th December and these two events will be entertaining.
CLUB CAPTAIN// By Esther Smith
We have had a busy motoring month. There was the midweek run, then the October Club run was a picnic run to “Waiwhenua” which is on River Road bordering on the Tutaekuri River, we were hosted by Kirsty Hill for a very relaxed outing. The weather gods were threatening, but fortunately the weather did remain fine as Graham had persuaded me we should take the Chev out for a run. We picnicked on the front lawn then later some went down to have a look at the glamping spot down by the river. The river road had been the original road from Taihape to Napier apparently you had to ford the river over 30 times on the way through. The original part of “Waiwhenua” had been a pub and shop further up the road, before been moved to the present location in the early 1900’s. Safari to the Wairarapa was a great success thanks to the organisers Juliette and Harley Cadwallader.

As you can see we have a busy couple of months coming up. The November Kitchen will be the last for the year, you will have to wait until the end of February 2019 for the next one. We have an Italian Night at Dolce Vista on Dec 1st organised by Barrie Browne, also our annual auction night Dec. 12th and Steve D. is organising our Christmas picnic run for Dec. 16th. HAWKE’S BAY VCC HOMESTEAD RUN Sunday 18th November 2018. This year we are heading off to Central Hawke’s Bay Meet at the ZINC CAFE, Northumberland St. Waipukurau. Be there by 10.30am On the way take the opportunity to call in at the Otane Farmers’ Market, Higginson St, Otane We will be joining in with the CHB VCC members for a run to an iconic Hawkes’ Bay Homestead. There will be a charge of $10.00 per car, the homestead owners will donate the proceeds to a charity of their choice

WAIARAPA SAFARI A SOUTHERN EXPLORATION// Labour weekend’s good humour smiled on us as we met at the Zinc café for a welcoming coffee and scone. Food and good company… what a great start! With anticipation we received our eco friendly rally pack and basked in the sun while a variety of vehicles assembled. Armed with her megaphone Juliette sent us south to explore the Porangahau region. First job was to meet at the longest place name for a group photo, then on to Waihi Falls -which were spectacular. For those of you who have seen the film Tomorrow when the War Began, these falls that we visited look identical to the ones in “Hell” from the movie. We relaxed, lunching here for a while, enjoying the serenity of the region. The next part of the journey involved some dirt roads and my navigating skills were repeatedly bought into question!!! There was a little blue smoke in our car at this time, however we did locate Masterton… phew! Saturday we all met at the Chardonnay Motel, for another briefing and Juliette, still armed with the megaphone… she wields it like a boss!!!, cleared us all to travel east to Castlepoint. This drive was beautiful rolling hills, farmland, all very picturesque. Even better the temperature started to rise and we rolled into the beach village, walked up to the lighthouse admired the view and generally absorbed the seaside vibe.
In the afternoon we travelled back to Carterton to visit Stonehenge Aotearoa. This was a brilliant visit, we met Richard Hall who spoke to us about the structure, where he opened the window into the past. We learned about astronomical, historical and mythological meanings and a highlight for me was the way sound was enhanced in the structure. Also the knowledge that I have changed star signs!! Hmmm not sure about that. Definitely a must visit in the Waiarapa. Dinner was a group event at Bollies Pizzaclose ish to Mount Holdsworth. This was held in a huge log cabin- which was built by the owner. The pizza was divine, my favourite being the “Nutty Blue” closely followed by the dessert pizza’s. Seriously I can never go back to ordinary local pizza’s they pale into insignificance in comparison. I hope you all went to the unique toilets- life is all about the adventure. We rolled out utterly stuffed full. Sunday, we were sent south to the southern most tip of the North Island. All the way out to Cape Palliser, it was a stellar day and driving conditions were perfect. Coffee became a priority, so when we arrived in Martinborough many of us stopped and enjoyed a cuppa and browsed the local shops. Driving out to the cape was beautiful in a wind swept, rocky way, the air, so clear we could see the South Island capped in snow. » Story continued page 17

WAIARAPA SAFARI A SOUTHERN EXPLORATION// » Story continued from page 12 We parked around the coast from the lighthouse for lunch and some energetic sorts climbed the two hundred plus steps to reach the lighthouse itself, enjoying the views. We spotted the seals on the rocks and some diving in the waves, fishing boats and locals surf casting. The afternoon was our own, so we visited Greytown and moseyed on back to the motel.

Finally our dinner at The Solway Park was our last get together. We enjoyed the tasty buffet and camaraderie of the group. Juliette and Harley kept us on our toes with a quiz to round off the evening and I learned that the layout of Martinborough was designed in the shape of a flag- who knew? That and a whole lot of other stuff! This was my first safari and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Big thanks to Harley (Wal)and Juliette Cadwallader for great organisation –very reassuring for the newbies and for the tail end charlies. And for everyone attending- it was a blast! Furthermore to ‘Sitting on the Couch’ at the September Club night I forgot to mention the following stories….PART 2
Now while ‘Sitting on the Couch’; I mentioned that we attended the 1972 International in Nelson. In order to enter the really you had to have your car scrutinized to see if it was acceptable to attend the rally. I think each branch had to appoint a scrutineer. When the chap came to see our 1928 Studebaker Director he asked us to do a few things to the car including getting it steam cleaned and painted underneath. We paid to have it steam cleaned and I painted it underneath. While in the middle of the task with my legs hanging out the side of the car a club member came to borrow some books from the club library which we looked after for a few years in the spare bedroom. He started talking to me as if I was Doug. I banged my head getting out from under the car in a hurry to ask him “Did he really think my legs looked like Doug’s?” I felt quite insulted. After running a big end at the 1972 rally we took the motor in to have all the big ends done. We got the motor back at 4.30pm and had to have it back together for the start of a rally to Gisborne the next morning. After I had put the kids to bed I went to help Doug with the motor. He asked me to lift the brake and clutch pedals up out of the way while he lowered the motor into the car. I then helped him bolt and connect everything back together, but when he went
to start the car he couldn’t as I had lifted the pedals up far too high and they wouldn’t go back to the floor. We then had to take the motor back out of the car, fix the pedals and put it back in again. We finally got it running at 3am but if was not running well so we gave up and went to bed. The next morning we got a ride to the start of the rally and spent the weekend jumping from car to car including Bailey’s Franklin and Stitchbury’s Essex and had a great time. On another occasion the Stude would not start so Doug hitched it to the tractor and towed me around the orchard. He told me what to do, putting it in gear and let the clutch out slowly when he gave me the wave. After two or three attempts it did not start, and it was making a strange sucking noise, so he got off the tractor to have a look and he said, “You silly moo, you have it in REVERSE!”.

Now; as mentioned while ”sitting on the couch” we housed the club Rolls Royce for several years. Club members would come and take the car out for a day or a rally. One day while Doug was at work a club member came to take the car out. He spent a lot of time trying to start the Rolls Royce but to no avail. So, I got the tractor and hitched it up and towed the Rolls around
and around the orchard until it finally fired up. SO when I told Doug that night; he went right off and told me that you DO NOT TOW a Rolls Royce with a tractor in a dusty orchard! I am still not sure what the difference in between towing our Stude or towing a Rolls!

Woohoo Cruise ship season has arrived and as I write this the first ship is just days away. The sun seems to be shining and it’s all looking great for this weekend’s A & P show where we are proudly showing off one of the fleet during the event and also have the pleasure of bringing in the celebrity for the event, Ray McVinnie. David is finally on route home in his moonboot with crutches and should be with us Thursday evening so just in time for the season. He wasn’t too impressed when I suggested hiring a mobility scooter so he could get around the two sheds. Hehe! On a more serious note, without David the new sheds are not completely ready for the season but we are slowly getting the list done. Seems like there is so much to do and we are already in full swing for the season. Although so far the response has been great and people can forgive the look of the outside once they enter the treasure trove within. Steve the merry mechanic has been working hard getting the fleet ready for the season and that’s no mean feat! He has also started work on one of our restoration projects the 1925 Studebaker. Anyone with any knowledge on Studebaker’s we’d love to hear from you. Most of you know how to contact Steve or just pop in and see us at 27 Wakefield street, Onekawa. A huge thank you to those of you that have donated Art Deco clothing and accessories to us, the Art Deco costume department is starting to come together nicely. We still need plenty more options so very grateful for any unused deco items you may have.

From Paul Collins Chairman of the North Shore VCC The other event was our branch’s Spring Tour, this year to Napier. 18 entries (34 people) met at Papakura on Friday 21st, travelling via back country roads to Matamata, then to Taupo for the night. The next day’s travel took us to Napier with a very scenic back road detour, with a picnic lunch at Lake Tutira, before travelling on to Napier, through the Art Deco centre, to Hooters Vintage Car Hire museum for a look at their collection of vintage tourer and sedan vehicles, all for hire, (with some available to drive your self too), then on to our motels to freshen up, before visiting the Hawkes Bay VCC clubrooms for dinner. We were made very welcome (and some made use of the clubs spares dept. to help keep their vehicle running). A most enjoyable evening to cap off the days motoring. The next morning we motored to Hastings to visit the British Car Museum, before driving to Havelock North, climbing Te Mata Peak to look at the magnificent views, then descending to the town centre for lunch. We then trickled back to Napier for a visit to Steve Trott’s amazing collection before returning to our motels. Monday morning we departed Napier via a few scenic back roads, on our journey back home. A big thank you to all who participated, including the Hawkes Bay VCC Branch, who helped make it a most enjoyable long weekend away. November 2018
