Well folks, I’m not sure where May has gone but it didn’t help that I was away for the first two weeks! We are now rapidly approaching the end of the “Club Year” with the AGM only weeks away, and the annual election of club officers. As this approaches I would like to thank the members who have provided their support to me over the past year of being Chairman and trust that you have enjoyed the club over this period. I would also like to acknowledge the support of the committee without which the club would struggle to operate. We have been fortunate to have had some knew blood on committee over this period and I personally think it is imperative that as a club we encourage newer members to get involved at committee level and in conjunction with longer serving members we get a good mix of experience from which to run the club. In my recent absence Esther Smith as Club captain again stepped into the breach and ensured the smooth operation and this cover highlights how important it is that we have some form of succession planning in place to provide cover / back-up for key roles within the branch.

Looking over May we were blessed with great weather for the Sunday run on the 20th when 14 cars assembled at the Cub Rooms to receive instructions from Graham & Esther as to where to head, together with brief from Steve Trott on “Straight Line Navigation” which formed part of the run. It was also nice to see new member Ben Newcourt called in at the start in his Austin Sports car to meet those present, so welcome Ben and we look forward to seeing you in the future. Off we all headed and it was a good mix of around town and out into the country before ending up at the Village Green in Ahuriri for afternoon tea. A further surprise with cake provided by Denise (I’m sure Bill did help make it!) complete with pink icing. I think it was something to do with the Royal Wedding so thank you Denise. So that it from me. See you all at the AGM in June.
There is still a lot happening in the club with no sign of a winter hibernation Last Club night was a winner, Colin Campbell gave us a talk on his early years in the car industry working with Ross Dysart Motors in Hastings. Colin had been fascinated with vehicles from an early age and he knew that he wanted to work in that field, when looking for an apprenticeship he decided Ross Dysart Motors was where he wanted to work. Along with many other interesting stories about the players in the motor vehicle industry both in Hawkes Bay and NZ. Colin told the story about the Renault that came into be painted “Nipple Pink” you’ll have to ask him sometime. The May midweek run went off well, and with the Sunday run we struck a great day. Unfortunately not too many members came along, with only 14 turning up on the day. The run was a combination of a poker run with a straight line navigation component. Somehow I think there needs to be some more instruction on the straight line, it can be a tricky concept to get your head around, but simple when you get there. Still it was good to have a change, thanks to Steve Trott and Jo for organising that part. We ended up at the sunken picnic area, by the Navigate Hotel. In a nod to Harry and Megan’s wedding that we had all stayed up far too late watching the previous night we even had a wedding cake bought along by Bill & Denise.
COMING EVENTS: Upcoming events are: • Wed 6th June – Midweek run meet at the clubrooms at 10.30 am, and committee meeting evening • 10th June – Lady Drivers run-always a good event. • 13th June- Club Night-The Annual Branch AGM so come along and have your say. • 29th June- The Kitchen: A great social evening, Get your names to Allan and Helen Twort Future events to look forward to are Winter Art Deco 14th/15th July and then our branch is hosting the National AGM on the 3rd/5th of August, this event is to be held at East Pier. Also don’t forget if you are planning to come on Safari at Labour weekend. Get your entries into the organisers Harley & Juliette Cadwallader. I look forward to seeing you all out and about at our branch events.

The proposed run to Tikokino was postponed until July due to poor weather conditions, but the 16 members who turned up did plan B, a lovely ramble through the countryside enjoying the colourful autumn colours before heading back to the warmth of the club rooms for lunch.
In Britains early days there was a window tax so to save money, windows were blocked = “Daylight Robbery”. The Scots did not pay tax = “Scot Free “. A clock in Chester had three face sides only, the west side facing Wales was blank as “They would not give them the time of day “
After lunch Allan Twort talked a little on his life in the Navy back in the 60’s, explaining the meaning of various parts of the uniform. This then led on to common sayings and how they came about.
Many thanks to Allan & Helen for putting the run together and we look forward to Bob Ackerly’s run later. It was nice to have Gordon & Shirley join us and hope to see them again.
MID WEEK RUN Wednesday 6th June ALWAYS 1st Wednesday of the Month. • Where: Meet at HB Vintage Club Rooms Approximate distance 68km travel time about 1.5 hours. There are two places of interest where we will stop and take a look around. Instructions will be brief. At the finish you will be introduced to our guests who will talk a little about the history of their home and surroundings.

That’s it! The end of the cruise ship season for another year. We had a fantastic day with the Insignia on the 17th, the Hawke’s Bay weather really held out and it was actually lovely and sunny.
Winter wedding are also fast approaching and the crisp Hawke’s Bay skies are just perfect for photographers to capture the day.
I do at least like the start of winter, the fire, cooking stews and soups and actually having time to settle in front of the TV and watch a movie, but it usually doesn’t last long before I’m desperate for the warmer weather and the town to be buzzing again. We can certainly see the roads have gotten quieter, the streets are looking emptier and everyone seems to have that winter vibe kicking in. Along with winter is all those jobs you’ve been putting off and with thoughts turning to next season, the growing ‘to do’ list seems endless already. So plenty to keep us busy till the sun and visitors return. School ball season has started and Monte the vintage bus is proving a popular choice. With it’s new sound system it can also play music
We are normally still about or you can always give us a call but it’s pretty cold and quiet. Half the team head off on travels and for those here at home it’s time to get jobs around the house done and get in the garden and sort out the neglect that summer inevitability causes. The new shed is starting to look great, dad’s been hard at work and it really shows. He’s been an awesome one man renovation crew. The new lights are in and wow. How good lighting can make a huge difference! Most of the bones of the building are now done, so the move is imminent and the rest we can work on once we’ve moved in. When will the Grand Opening will be? How long is a piece of string? Will keep you posted….. Well that’s it for another month, be seeing you…

SEEKING ANY KEEN POWER CYCLISTS Paul Furkert, a Wairarapa VCC member, has recently recommissioned a power cycle (Paul’s is a 1936 BSA bicycle driven by a 1951 Trojan Mini Motor (via a friction drive onto the rear wheel)). This machine has a top speed of around 20mph, so isn’t really suitable for going on standard VCC rallies. Paul is looking to get in touch with other owners of power cycles who might be interested in a Power Cycle rally. The idea is to all meet up at a county pub / campground somewhere in the North Island one weekend next summer, and do some short (and slow) explorations of the local area on our machines. Owners of other slow bikes (e.g. mopeds or veteran/vintage motorbikes with top speeds of less than 30mph) would also be most welcome. If you have a suitable machine, and would be interested in such a weekend away, please get in touch with Paul (email paul.furkert@xtra.co.nz or phone (06) 3795355 or text 02040273746). If there is sufficient interest from cycle / bike owners, the finer details of the rally will be worked out in consultation with all potential participants.
