chairman’s REPORT// By Steve Donovan
Hi to all members and partners. This month has been very quiet after the run up to Art Deco weekend. It is great that the only feedback about Art Deco weekend has been positive. It is a funny feeling after spending many hour worrying if an event will be a success and will it make the money you hope We get so little feedback. I attended the National Executive Meeting in Auckland on 11th March. Once again it was very interesting in parts. There has been some discussion on members being able to renew their subs on line which I am sure it would have been a great idea. But unfortunately due to the variations in each Branch subs this will not happen. We had a presentation by Melissa Holm on behalf of Ross Holden the National Comm’s officer. She spoke about National setting up a Facebook page which everybody agreed would be a great idea. Another proposal which got complete support was for national office to coordinate a National Vintage Car Day. This would be held in conjunction with Cancer Society Daffodil Day weekend. The idea is for our 36 branch’s to organize a Car outing inviting anybody who would like to participate and pay $20 per car. If nationwide we got 2000 cars which is not impossible, the VCC could donate $40,000 to Cancer Society. It would be a win, win situation, we could get some national publicity and the Society get a substantial donation. I am sure you all have been touched by cancer either personally and know somebody who has. There will be more information to come. Personally I think it is a great idea and we should fully support it. Once again some questions were asked about the National finances and where they are April 2017
against the budget. Apparently because some Branches have not claimed expenses from last year they were not able to bring us up to date. Did you know Beaded Wheels have a Facebook page? The hardy annual question of 12 month warrants was asked and we were advised it will not be in the foreseeable future. There was some question about the next Vero international rally in Taranaki. The organizers are very positive about the event and most venues are now in place. New Plymouth encourages you to attend as it will be a rally like no other. Leon Salt gave us an outline of the reasons behind his motion re the classification of years and the names of each group of cars. You will be asked to vote in the papers which will be sent to you for the national AGM in August. Our National officer put many good reasons to leave the periods as they are siting both National and overseas reasons. As much as I applaud Leon’s efforts to promote his motion it should be voted against. We have many other challenges ahead of our organization and this will not help. Good or bad I am known to speak up at these meetings but this is my last national meeting after approx. 9 years. Your next Chairman will have the privilege of representing you at a National level. I take my hat off to the members who are sorting out Dick Goodall collection they doing a fantastic job. I am sure the auction will go well in May and thanks to the support of the Marineland Street Rod & Kustom Klub.
CLUB CAPTAIN/ secretary REPORT// Here we are at yet another month end and judging by the weather, I think summer may have decided to leave us. We had a good month really with an interesting guest speaker in Sophie Hammond at Club Night, giving us the insight of her restoration project on the Bedford truck. Quite amazing for a youngster to take on a project like this and this is certainly where the future of the Vintage Car membership lies. A very informative and interesting talk so a big thank you to Sophie and her dad Neil. Our monthly club run went ahead despite the threat of bad weather and the small number that attended enjoyed a run in the country, an interesting talk on “truffle farming” and gem stones followed by lunch, before the rain arrived and we scuttled home. Many thanks to Graham & Esther Smith for organising. The negative of this run was the poor turnout (12 cars!). For the next run, April, please be aware that we are holding it early to avoid Easter and we need numbers. Refer the ad for details.

An upcoming event has been organised by way of a Meet & Greet night on Wednesday 26th April between 5.30 and 6.30pm at the clubrooms. Through the generosity of Eurocity we have been fortunate to secure Steve Hansen, the All Black Coach, as a guest so here’s your big chance to get up close to the second most important man in NZ. Numbers will be required for catering (drinks & nibbles will be provided) so numbers please to me by email hbvcc@govt. org or phone Kay or I no later than 20th April. This really is a one off opportunity for us so lets make the most of it. If weather permits, bring your vintage car along to dress up the park. Secretary: This has just continued to be covered, with the volume of emails etc dropping now Art Deco has passed, but just around the corner we have the AGM looming! Now that will get you all thinking -yeah right!! That’s it. Cheers

MARCH SUNDAY CLUB RUN// Sunday Club Run 12th March 2017. Well after much deliberation and conferring a decision was made and all systems were go. Weather had not been on our side. We met at Anderson park where there were 12 cars. We headed off and out through Fernhill and up the Taihape Road. There were a few moderns on our road due to the jet sprints being on. Our first stop was down the Matapiro Road. Owners Tim and Sandra Gifkins have two businesses there. First one we looked at was Oakland Trufferie. Tim and Sandra explained the procedure of Truffle growing. These truffles form under Oak and Hazelnut trees where the roots cross one another. The Cocker Spaniel Merlin demonstrated the search process. He put on quite a show even though there was nothing beneath the surface. He was showing off. It’s usually about June/July that they appear.

We then went up to a shed where Tim demonstrated his gemstone and Jade carving enterprise. He had some wonderful samples to show us. He was very passionate about what he did. Some of the finished products took many days and weeks to get to the desired result. After leaving the property we headed down the road to our picnic spot by the river. This was surrounded by trees. We got ourselves all set up with our picnic lunch. There was a bit of bantering going on mainly from (Club Captain). We were there for about an hour and would have stayed longer but along came the rain and made us pack up and we all headed off home. Thank you Esther & Graham for an enjoyable run. HOOTERS// Anna @ Hooters Hi Folks, It’s been one busy summer with Hooters cars out and about enjoying the beautiful sunshine and showing our visitors what a wonderful place we live in. We recently had a corporate group and managed a huge 24 car convoy with a mix of both self drive and chauffeur driven cars. It’s the biggest event we’ve done so far and you’d be hard pushed to find another company not just here in NZ but anywhere in the world that would be able to have a line up of 24 classic and vintage cars on offer. Autumn is still looking pretty busy with 6 cruise ships still to arrive and several conferences still to take place. The conference market certainly seems to be gaining strength which is largely down to the upgrades to so many local venues and facilities. Well done Hawke’s Bay, we are certainly becoming a hot spot! Have you seen ‘Monte’ the Hooters little red vintage bus! A huge shout out to Diane & Geoff Quarry for letting us buy this beauty. She is loving tootling around town and the feedback we’ve been getting from visitors and locals alike is fantastic! Everyone seems to love seeing her trundle past with happy punters! Drivers - Hooters is always looking for extra drivers, you do need to have a P license and a sunny disposition! Would suit a part timer that loves Napier, Vintage cars and people! Next season is already looking busy and the ships are set to get bigger and bigger. So if you fancy joining the crew please do pop in and have a chat. Ask our Trevor, we’re a pretty fun team :-) Did you hear we sponsored a Race Series this year? With a few races not going ahead this year April 2017
HRC Events decided to step up and put together their own vintage race series and we were honoured when they asked us to sponsor. So far we had round one in at Hampton Downs with a win from Roger Greaney in the Buckler, followed by Ray Ferner in second and Terry Roycroft in my dream car, the Bugatti in 3rd. The second round at Taupo saw a few of the faster boys start at the back of the grid which made for some interesting racing and Barry Bates in his Lotus set the pace followed by Roger Greaney in the Buckler and David Brock-Jest in the V12 Lagonda. Always a proud daughter moment to see dad out on track doing what he loves and having fun. Also a mention to locals Pete Caroll with his Austin 7 and Richard Anderson in the Vanguard who were also competing. The final round of the ‘Hooters Vintage Race Series’ is coming up on the 8th/9th April in Taupo and it’s set to be quite a grid.
